Indoor Basketball?

Anyone have any leads on access to an indoor basketball court in Edgewater or Rogers Park? I tried the Broadway Armory, but access is limited to Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30pm-9pm...even as a member of the park. Having a membership to a public park paid for with our tax dollars is already a questionable practice...let alone the public not having access to a public park. I went in there hoping to have a morning shoot around. Totally empty, yet I wasn't allowed to shoot around. Anyway, I don't mean for this be a rant...just kinda rubbed me the wrong way. Just looking for some indoor basketball recommendations!

Thanks!

  • Might wanna try Loyola park field house at Greenleaf and Sheridan. I know they do adult leagues, not sure if they have open court time.

  • Margate Park, 4921 Marine Dr. has basketball but it is located in Uptown.

  • I'd be interested in local options, too.

Why I voted against the taxpayer subsidy for Presence Health
The City Council yesterday voted to provide a $5.6 million tax increment finance subsidy to Presence Health. I was one of 18 aldermen who voted against the subsidy. Allow me to explain why. The subsidy was given to entice the health care provider to move its headquarters, and the 200 jobs that came with it, from the suburbs to downtown Chicago.

For someone to suggest that an alderman would take his "marching orders from the cardinnal" goes back to the bigoted thoughts of the 1960 presidential election when certain groups campaigned against John Kennedy with the idea he would take orders from the Pope. I am surprised any one thinks that bigoted way today.

Crime near Juneway Terrace

Hi potential neighbors!

I’m interested in purchasing a home 🏠 between Jonquil and Juneway ( around the 1500 blk ) and was wondering if you could give me some true neighborly feedback on what the neighborhood is really like vs what the Realetor is saying ... Thru my own research it appears 400 plus crimes are listed in the last six months ! YIKES!!
I’ve lived in Chicago neighhoods all my life but always in apt complexes ( l know things happen I’m wondering is this a safe move for my family and I?
Would appreciate any info I can gather before making this big decision. Thanks kindly ,

C2

  • I live on Sheridan between Jonquil and Juneway, so I am very close. There is a good amount of crime near by. More towards Gale elementary. With that said, I have never felt unsafe in the 8 years I have lived here, and freely walk around with my 2 kids. I am a realtor too. If you need help :)

  • Owen Wilson Sock it to me!

Thanks for the update on Cat aka Catherine

No street lights on Juneway this week

Was reported many nights ago... When will this be fixed?

  • I don't think so...I've been told 7 business days regarding either, but I'm glad it's getting repaired :)

  • The repair took two days. Request #18-00370807 was made on Jan. 20th and it now is closed on Jan 22nd. That's two days from the confirmed date of request to final repair and closure.

Parents please contact your local schools council to support safe passage in Rogers Park.

After the recent shootings and strong armed robberies a small group of concerned parents met to discuss options.
We were advised to take our concerns to local schools principles and the LSC.
There is no formal process in place to establish safe passage in Rogers Park.
The idea is to have this in place for the start of the fall session.
If this effort gains traction the local police commander and Alderman can provide additional information and guidance.
It all starts with parents contacting the LSC and principles.

  • Bruce_ Comment by TBD, whom you've muted

Thanks for everyone's help in bringing these valuable resources to Rogers Park.

    http://www.fox32chicago.com/news/local/safe-passage-program-expands-to-14-more-schools

  • This old posting is from 2016. Is the original poster, Bruce, trying to stir the pot by dragging it up again with hopes of provoking argument and controversy? None of the 14 schools mentioned in the most recent comment are in or near Rogers Park. A posting from two years ago is no longer informative. The new listing of schools isn't relevant to Rogers Park. Old news isn't helpful and unnecessary provocation isn't neighborly. What's your point Bruce?

CPS Families In Transition Has Rent For Landlords

  • Wait... isn't CPS having trouble finding enough money to fulfill their primary objective of providing a good education for the children in the district?

Now they are paying people's rent too?

CPS needs to stick to their primary tax payer funded mission and let the other community resources do what THEY do best. Wonder how much CPS is diverting in benefits and salaries to administer this housing program that overlaps with other city and state programs?

  • The money for the program comes from the City of Chicago Housing Trust Fund. CPS is just identifying families that are homeless but still managing to send their kids to school.

Last year, we packed three buses with over 150 Rogers Park residents, who traveled downtown to join 250,000 women and their allies who raised their voices for issues each of us hold dear. That historic day embodied the ongoing fight for women’s rights.

This Saturday, we will come together again to celebrate the spirit of the resistance efforts over the past year and unite to focus on the 2018 elections and beyond.

The 49th Ward is clearly strong and united and the March to the Polls this Saturday is an important act of resistance. Please join us for this historic march.

Two Chicago aldermen want to limit release of condo owners' personal information
Two Chicago aldermen who represent most of downtown want to reverse a state law that makes condo owners' personal information more widely available to their fellow association members. A proposal introduced this week by Aldermen Brian Hopkins and Brendan Reilly would allow association boards to limit the release of owners' names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and weighted votes in Chicago condo buildings and complexes.
    http://www.chicagotribune.com
  • Wazzup not available

being able to contact neighbors in an emergency - like flooding from above - is important. Not every condo has a manager on site - and not every condo has a contact person at night. This ordinance is important and will be appreciated when an emergency arises. There could be an exception for those condos with 24 hour on site contact -like manager or doorman.

  • Some smaller condo associations automatically distribute a list of telephone numbers to all residents for that purpose. This is different and was supposedly quietly stuck into another proposed Condominium Act change. I understand that several state senators and representatives are already starting to work on repealing that one part of the change.

I confronted them and they seemed completely unconcerned about the mistreatment. I switched cars to call the police, and also informed the driver. Two other witnesses said that after I switched cars, the couple became verbally belligerent. I don't believe any action has been taken yet.

Yesterday's death at the Bryn Mawr Red Line stop?

Many a warm summer night was spent there with a burger and a beer...or two..or three...

One of the reasons Moody's beer garden became so popular was that it was all-ages: you could bring the family and eat outside. Also, the bar indoors was very dark--and, before anti-smoking ordinances were enacted--smoky as hell. So the outdoors became a refuge from smokers too--people still smoked outside, but they could wave the smoke away. (And you & they could see each other and move to a different table).

I never knew any other Moody's but the one on B'way. I know it's not the end of an era, but it's always sad when a person who established something beloved passes away. May his memory be for a blessing,

Christmas Tree Pickup/Recycle? - YES!

I just wanted to give an enthusiastic shout-out to the non-profit group, Do The Right Thing - Recycling (http://dtrt-recycling.org/). They just came to my 3rd floor walkup (yes, at 8pm on a Saturday!) and did an exceptional job removing my tree and taking it to be recycled. Well worth the door-to-door $25 donation/charge. (It's only $15 if you meet them at the curb.) Check them out and schedule away your worries of the schlep.

Tree Recycling Program - Do The Right Thing! Recycling
Do The Right Thing! Recycling is offering holiday tree pickup services for the north side of Chicago. We pick up your tree directly from your living room floor. We come equipped with reusable tarps and cords, and all we ask is that you remove all decorations from the trees including lights and tinsel.
