Lululemon in old Silver Cloud space?

Driving by the old Silver Cloud building today I noticed that the old mural on the Wabansa side on the building was gone, covered up by a wood installation that does not appear to be temporary. Since I was waiting at the light I noticed that what appeared to be an ad on the boards ending with “@lululemon”.

The old Silver Cloud sign over the front door is also gone, replaced by a small circular sign hanging over the entrance. Something clicked tonight and I remembered Lululemon’s logo:

http://www.stickpng.com/assets/images/5a1ac489f65d84088faf132e.png

It seems like a strange fit since Lululemon already has a larger retail space in a better foot traffic location just south on Damen, not to mention that the current space there has a kitchen. I found this article that both a) makes it doubly odd that they would open yet even more space relatively close to this large development but b) shows their interest in mixed use spaces with food service capabilities.

https://chicago.curbed.com/2018/5/4/17315408/lululemon-new-store-north-avenue

So, I’m calling it now ... a Lululemon yoga studio with frou frou food.

That is strange. Perhaps they are just advertising on the building. It would be strange for them to move across the street to a location that is less ideal.

Cat Found - Marina, 8 months old

We found a very friendly, young cat in our yard a couple of nights ago when it was storming. It turns out she is microchipped - we learned that her name is Marina and she is 8 months old, but the owner's contact information is private. The chip company has tried to contact the owner but so far, no luck. Did anyone lose this sweet kitten?

how to get alley lights replaced in Bucktown

Has anyone had any luck with getting alley lights replaced? We have two that don't work and it creates a very dark alley. When I tried to submit a ticket to the cityofchicago.org site, it won't accept addresses because it's an alley. When I put in my own address and noted that it was behind my house, they closed it with a duplicate status. Still the lights are not fixed!

I've seen less than desirable people in our alley lately and I would like the alley lights to be working. Also, why do I pay all these taxes?? Any insight would be appreciated!

Gunshots on 2200 block of North Talman?

Did anyone hear gunshots (4-5) at 9:45pm Sunday, May 13th around the 2200 block of North Talman? Sounded like they were close. One neighbor said that he heard the shots and then a car's screeching tires afterwards. I called 911 to report, but wasn't sure where it exactly occurred. Thank you.

  • Ran into a neighbor yesterday who had the cops come out, filed and report, and showed them a casing. Just north of Belden on Tallman across from the school.

Sewer drains in gangway

Does anyone know of a sewer company or a plumber familiar with the sewer system in 100+ yr old buildings and where the gangway drain empties. The building shares a common wall with building next door and each gangway has a drain for rain/snow water runoff. Have had a camera line through main drains in both buildings showing no leaks, however there is some heaving in the basement floor of one of the buildings. Any ideas on how to proceed short of digging up the basement floor? Looking for someone who has had experience with old buildings.
Thanks for any help with this.

Most drains, don't necessarily have anything standard, except they usually headed towards the main sewer either at a 90° or some type of 45°. Angled towards the Outlet or the street. If there's an underground downspout drain nearby, it probably heads there, but that's rare in my opinion. A plumber that does a lot of rotting may have a better idea than me on this. Looking down the gangway drain and you can sometimes see the curve of the pipe and the direction that is heading and it's probably a straight line from there to the Sewer or Street.

Thinking about my previous post from this morning detailing "bedrock" being 7-8 feet below Sawyer Avenue, I got curious about the area's geology and found an Illinois State Geological Map: Surficial Geology of the Chicago Region: Chicago Loop Quadrangle published in 1939 covering the North Side from the lake west to Cicero: http://isgs.illinois.edu/node/4856.

There are 3 locations on the north side that have "thinly covered" Silurian Niagaran Dolomite Formations. These would be mounds of limestone (dolomite) just below the surface. One is in Logan Square bounded roughly by Kimball - Belden - St. Louis - McLean (2 streets west of the dig on Sawyer mentioned in my last post), a small spot runs a few hundred feet northeast from Hirsch & Spaulding in West Humboldt Park and a larger dome encompasses Smith Park (surprisingly a former quarry) along with an equally sized area south of Grand Avenue where there is a City of Chicago limestone quarry today. Contrast that to the Loop where it takes approximately 80 feet of digging to reach bedrock (the same dolomite limestone) to support the caissons under Loop high rises.

    Also of interest:
On the same map the shoreline of ancient "Lake Chicago" (an expanded Lake Michigan) was drawn. In Logan Square around 4000 years ago the shore of "Lake Chicago" was a few blocks east and parallel to what is now Milwaukee Avenue. Amazing to think that the Native American trail, now known to us as Milwaukee Avenue, has been in use for over 4000 years!

By the way, this has nothing to do with sewers, but might have relevance for drainage.

One of the problems I noted in my area is that the city has put up so many stop signs in an effort to substitute for lack of law enforcement that we have one on every side street corner in a 12 sq block area , so people have become numb to them. If I recall correctly going back maybe 15 yrs alderman were given power to have stop signs installed and in some areas ( mine for sure) would have them installed at any corner for a few votes. one month before an Aldermatic election we had 6 put up within that 12 sq blocks. this doesn't imply that people shouldn't obey the stop sign only that once again a good tool has been recklessly over used or sold for votes.

  • If you take away stop signs every residential cross walk becomes a game of chicken like what pedestrians must endure "legally" crossing Armitage or Damen. Even though most drivers don't care about stop signs, most make an honest attempt to stop when they see a pedestrian waiting to cross. And pedestrians mostly have to wait for a car to stop to make sure they actually do.

Support the LaTorre Family, a shining line in the Humboldt Park/Logan Square Community

A beautiful, generous and compassionate family of Chase School needs your support. Last month, their 6 month old baby was diagnosed with Muscular Spinal Atrophy. With three other children, and being able to work inconsistently, they need our financial support to pay for their child's numerous treatments to beat all odds and hopefully be a future student of Chase School.

Please consider donating or passing and sharing with friends and family. Let's spread some love :)

The LaTorre family is one of our Chase School families and our hearts have been inclined to help and support them at this time. They live and serve in the west side of Humboldt Park. Surrounded by gang violence, they've set up their home to serve and love the community.

  • I hope the family has already been told about free or low cost assistance from the Muscular Dystrophy Association. www.mda.org While Spinal Muscular Atrophy is a motor neuron disease and not exactly muscular dystrophy, the MDA has a program for persons with SMA.

Dear Joggers

When running up from behind a person with dogs or around blind corners please slow down and make sure a dog walker is aware of your presence so they can secure their dogs. Or even better, simply divert to the street. If you want to pretend you're Usain Bolt find a track or join Midtown Athletic Club. The sidewalk is not a running track.

  • I remember this post from last year! Glad to see joggers are still terrorizing the mean streets of chicago.

  • The lady doth protest too much, methinks.

We have a dog (well still a puppy / teen but almost a dog) and have made a concerted effort from day one to be as minimally intrusive as possible....its really not that hard!!

If you are a conscientious dog owner, you have a generally good idea about when your dog needs to go to the bathroom and what it looks like when its time (e.g., beginning / end of walks, after play, increased sniffing etc.).

Unfortunately, many small dog owners, don't train their dogs at ALL because it is easier to just pick them up which is frequently a problem I have seen.

It is a no brainer that you shouldn't let your dog on someone's lawn to go to the bathroom. I get it, it happens sometimes and you are caught unaware. But that should always be the exception. It is always the dog owners problem to pay attention to what their dog is doing. There is no excuse...it is so easy to go the next patch of grass / keep off main lawns / pick up the poo.

The being said OP...I get that you were venting here but it is likely that the perpetrator of your issue isn't seeing this post...

  • Dog do is unhealthy and especially so when people deliberately make it their business to allow their dogs to use other people's lawn and yards. It creates a Rodent problem, and your children can't play around in their yard. However, I've heard that they have something that can be sprayed on your yard to stop this problem. Please check into this. Good good luck.

Fence Company?

Hi!
Our house has a metal fence in the front, and wood fences on both sides of the house. We are looking to add a wood gate to both sides of the house, so that we can keep our dog in the backyard. We are looking to mimic the gate in the picture that our neighbors have. One of the sides would have to go through cement/sidewalk while the other is going into dirt/rocks.

Does anyone have a recommended company to use for this type of project?

  • I recommend Porfi Iron Works for this. Giorgio is the owner and is very responsive and easy to work with. Pricing is quite good, too. Basically you would do an iron gate and then add wood to it. We used Porfi to do something quite similar for our side gate (visible from the street, if you wanted to take a look. I could send you the address offline)
    https://www.yelp.com/biz/porfi-iron-works-chicago

  • @Cori B - wonderful, appreciate your input! I will reach out to Giorgio regarding what I am looking for (you articulated what I needed better than I could, as well....so thank you!!) If you don't mind sending me the address offline, that'd be great to check it out.

Thanks in advance!

We need more people sending complaints, video, photos, observations. The more complaints the better the police can serve our community. Each complaint creates a "ticket" and the more tickets the police get the stronger they can act. It is important that we in the community provide the police department with complaints so that the police can influence the politicians. Videos are a good way to show the real problem.

So, please, when you hear loud music in Humboldt Park, pick up your phone from your pocket and video record the event. Send it as a complaint to 274637 (CRIMES). Can't be easier.

Guatemalan shoes

About a year ago I bought these cool shoes from a van which was selling Guatemalan made shoes and hammocks around Logan Square near the monument. I love them and would love to buy another pair in a different color but I don't know where to find this van or know whether they have a store at this point?
