  • Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School reviewed by a parent

Our fourteen year old son is living at the O School and is having a very positive experience. The staff is kind and receptive. My son has shared with us that he would not be doing this well at home, and he realizes how beneficial the therapeutic environment is. It is hard work and it is hard to be away from home, but it is a positive environment, and the staff really cares about the kids. We feel lucky to have found the O School.

Their arguments are sound - the Jackson Park/Midway location destroys sacred green space, creates traffic and parking nightmares and will have very limited jobs, economic benefits to poor Black AA communities. The alternative location West of Washington Park at 55th street is so much better - on the Green El Line, no destruction of park space an anchor to create an up and coming mixed income community west of Hyde Park. Let's all get behind this:

Canadian Geese Environmental Destruction

I am appalled at the huge numbers of Canadian Geese polluting our ecosystem in Jackson Park, Washington Park and along the South Lakefront. I noticed literally thousands of Canadian Geese in my walk in Jackson Park last sunday. These birds apparently deposit over 1 pound of feces each day and this is polluting our water system in the same ways that human feces/sewage once did. The best environmental engineering achievement in Chicago history was when we reversed the flow of the Chicago river so untreated sewage stop flowing in to Lake Michigan - our source of drinking water. It's a basic rule of civilization not to poop in your drinking water. Well these Canadian Geese are seriously pooping in our drinking water, also ruining things for swimmers off the Point and 57th, 61st street beaches. Plus the Geese feces is food for the exploding rat population.

The Canadian Geese aren't even flying South for the Winter anymore as they have it so easy here. Even liberal Seattle did a mass culling of Geese because they valued their clean water.

Why don't we do the same? There are lots of safe, responsible shot gun and bow and arrow ways to hunt these Geese. Another option is to introduce predators.

Here's an article about the huge problems of Canadian Geese.

http://www.hydepark.org/parks/jpac/geese.htm

I do note that Ald Hairston has spoken sensibly on this problem.

    Canada geese in parks
Jackson Park home. Jackson Park News and Bulletins *Alderman Hairston says the article was incompletely published and does not include her distinction between the geese and their feces or include that any solution must be humane. At least one bird conservation organization has sent a letter to federal government asking that the protected status of the Canada goose not be lifted.

On the plus side, it looks like our 10 day brutal arctic cold spell has caused most of the Canadian Geese to fly South.

The Obama elites are grabbing precious green park space in Jackson Park and the Midway Plaisance - to build their Obama Presidential Library and Tiger Woods and other elites convert Jackson Park & South Shore Cultural Center to an expensive golf course. Apparently we can’t get Barack Obama to visit the South Side of Chicago unless he’s on the Lake Front and playing expensive golf.

Meanwhile the rest of our city is suffering shootings, murders, deteriorating infrastructure, rat infestation and increasing numbers of homeless people ~ 80,000.

The situation is so bad that the homeless are now using our police stations as shelters - disrupting police work and exposing police officers and crime victims to disease.

I propose that we shame the City and national political and media elites to simply abandon the Obama Presidential library and posh golf course in our Jackson Park and instead build state of the art homeless shelters with adequate showers, laundry facilities and nursing and security services.

The extremely wealthy Obama supporters (Oprah Winfrey) can contribute the $s to prevent Chicago homeless from freezing to death or dying of diseases like Hepatitis or TB.

And really what have Oprah Winfrey or the Obamas done for poor Black AA here on the South Side and West Side - Oprah has left our town, doesn’t employ many/any poor Black AA Chicagoans and the Obamas don’t even want to associate with poor Chicagoans and will only come visit if they turn Jackson Park in to a semi private Obama/Tiger woods Presidential library and expensive golf course on our Lake Front!

And why do we even need more Presidential libraries anywhere in Chicago or anywhere in the USA - it’s just propaganda to say “our President was the best”. Does anyone go to the George W Bush Presidential library? Somehow I doubt if George W Bush ever read a serious book.

So nostalgic to see these pictures. It was one of my favorite dating spots. The Calypso and Dixie Kitchen restaurants were the best. I’m still wondering why Park 52 was closed yet it’s still standing vacant. We had a beautiful 70th Birthday Party there for my Mother. Sad, but I can help being happy about the new offerings in the area.
