There is some good news - 100 plus University of Chicago professors have publicly called to change the location of the proposed Obama Library and huge above ground parking garage currently proposed to grabbed up large parts of Jackson Park and the Midway Plaisance.

Their arguments are sound - the Jackson Park/Midway location destroys sacred green space, creates traffic and parking nightmares and will have very limited jobs, economic benefits to poor Black AA communities. The alternative location West of Washington Park at 55th street is so much better - on the Green El Line, no destruction of park space an anchor to create an up and coming mixed income community west of Hyde Park. Let's all get behind this:

I am appalled at the huge numbers of Canadian Geese polluting our ecosystem in Jackson Park, Washington Park and along the South Lakefront. I noticed literally thousands of Canadian Geese in my walk in Jackson Park last sunday. These birds apparently deposit over 1 pound of feces each day and this is polluting our water system in the same ways that human feces/sewage once did. The best environmental engineering achievement in Chicago history was when we reversed the flow of the Chicago river so untreated sewage stop flowing in to Lake Michigan - our source of drinking water. It's a basic rule of civilization not to poop in your drinking water. Well these Canadian Geese are seriously pooping in our drinking water, also ruining things for swimmers off the Point and 57th, 61st street beaches. Plus the Geese feces is food for the exploding rat population.

The Canadian Geese aren't even flying South for the Winter anymore as they have it so easy here. Even liberal Seattle did a mass culling of Geese because they valued their clean water.

Why don't we do the same? There are lots of safe, responsible shot gun and bow and arrow ways to hunt these Geese. Another option is to introduce predators.

Here's an article about the huge problems of Canadian Geese.

http://www.hydepark.org/parks/jpac/geese.htm

I do note that Ald Hairston has spoken sensibly on this problem.

    Canada geese in parks
Jackson Park home. Jackson Park News and Bulletins *Alderman Hairston says the article was incompletely published and does not include her distinction between the geese and their feces or include that any solution must be humane. At least one bird conservation organization has sent a letter to federal government asking that the protected status of the Canada goose not be lifted.
    http://www.hydepark.org
  • jaye els Returned to Hyde Park Kenwood

On the plus side, it looks like our 10 day brutal arctic cold spell has caused most of the Canadian Geese to fly South.
