DePaul Music CD Seller

Had a guy come after 9pm and knock on our door and try to get money for a student CD for music at DePaul. We have him on camera going to other neighbors’ doors and swearing and talking to himself. Couldn’t tell if he was casing the places.

City sticker late fee

I've been living in an apartment in Lincoln Park since summer 2016. I never bought a city sticker because I park in a garage. I'm moving to another part of the city in a few months and I plan on street parking. My question is, if I go to register for a city sticker when I move, are they going to charge me the $60 late fee or could I claim I didn't have my car in the city during that time and get away with it?

  • oz neighbor 36 years in LP

Whether you park in a garage or not, you still should have been buying a city sticker.
Consider the $60 late fee to compensate for the two years you didn't buy a sticker.

  • SF893 I like turtles

Just register as a new car or you just moved here. There is no way for them to check how long you have lived here nor will they go through the trouble. F***k the city and their money grabs. Cut the corners wherever you can. Surprised you got away with 2 years, they will ring you up even if you park on the street for 10 mins while running into a store.

  • I think they require documentation i.e. the lease showing when you moved there.

Lost black cat

Hi all, our black cat is missing. He is small, with no collar and a kink in his tail. He is an indoor cat but somehow got outside last night. A neighbor says she saw him at 11:30pm being chased out of our yard by another cat. They ran across Halsted, west on Winconsin Place. If you have seen him please message me. Thank you!

  • @WendiChicago Interested in local news

If you haven't already, alert all the shelters and put signs up with the photos within a six block radius of your house. Also, leave some of his kitty litter and clothing that smells like you at the entrance to your house. Good luck!!

Property Tax Appeal

Hello neighbors-
I’m sure you’ve all seen your property taxes start to rise. Do any of you have any recommendations for tax attorneys who can help reduce the taxes? I get unsolicited mail from many of them, but do you all have experience with any of them? Thanks!

  • Does Farlap file the appeal for you, or do they only provide comps?

  • Rahul Khare Innovative Express Care - Physician and Founder

So... it’s not difficult to appeal. What Farlap does is take you through everything by phone: pull up the website, enter your address and pin (they provide this), put in your reason of appeal, put in your comps (they give you the pin #s), and then you submit. That’s really it. The whole process took me 7 minutes (with his guidance).

Most importantly, he guides you through what will happen in the next few months and what to look out for.

Has anyone else received this strange flyer in their mailbox?

Received a photocopy of this hand-written/drawn flyer in our mailbox (was hand delivered, no envelope). I can't even figure out what the purpose of this message was. Anyone have insights? Should we be concerned?

  • Tony B in RP neighbor @ Lunt

krw, AKs are illegal in Chicago so you don't need to worry.

  • krw

Really?? That's reassuring if its true. If it is, I'm sure its thanks to Mayor Daley for as long as it lasts...

Belden Avenue Construction - Commonwealth and Clark

Does anyone know anything about the road being torn up on Belden between Commonwealth and Clark? The construction has stopped and now it is just half gravel that is starting to fade away, creating massive bumps. It's very annoying and there seems to be no progress towards completion.

Missing: Gray Tabby Female Cat

One of our community cats has been missing since Sunday from the 900 Block of Fullerton. She is a small gray tabby with a white chest, large yellow eyes and a clipped left ear (to indicate she's a community cat). She also has a microchip.

We have been taking care of her for 1.5 years and it is unusual for her to be gone this long. She is somewhere between 2.5-4 years old and is friendly and sweet to her caretakers but skittish around others.

Please let me know if you've seen her!

  • My only suggestion is to ask your neighbors on Burling, just north of Fullerton, as they have a few community cats. Perhaps they’ve become friends. One of their cats, Fred, looks a lot like this one. Good luck. I found a rat under our grill yesterday so if you find your cat, send her over! 🐀 🐈

Could anyone at this address please send the name of your builder? Our condo would like the same stairs. Thank you.

  • Andrew Carpenter Realtor Edgewater home owner and Chicago Reator

After no responses to your previous set of posts I think it's safe to say that nobody knows the builders. Based on the address ranges I'm guessing these are buildings required to have a management company sign posted on the building. Give them a call and ask them about their contractor.

ISO venue for tiny ceremony

We are getting married August 26th and having a brunch reception at Summer House in Lincoln Park. Our only struggle has been finding a place to have our ceremony since it’s only 30 people total (including us and officiant/photographer). We want to have a short (20-minute) ceremony so we don’t feel like it would make sense to pay the $600 permit for having it in a park and most venues are catered for those who have large weddings.

We would love some suggestions of beautiful places nearby that would host a short and tiny ceremony. We would even be open to working with someone who has a beautiful backyard who would be willing to have us for a quick Sunday morning ceremony!

Thanks :)

  • melanieh new homeowner

While I appreciate your sentiment, It's unrealistic to think you won't have to pay anyone a fee to use their space, no matter how small. I don't think $600 is hefty for a wedding venue. If you truly want to keep costs down, just have the ceremony at the same venue as the reception. (And congratulations, by the way!)

  • Yes we definitely understand why there is a fee in place and respect it. We are indeed budget-conscious and like to get as much info as we can to make the best decision possible after weighing the options and our priorities. Thank you all for the suggestions :)

Empty storefronts on Halsted near Armitage to Webster

A couple of things. First is the general downturn in traditional retail over the past two or three years. Also, I hear that rents in the area went up a lot about 10-15 years ago when Armitage was a big shopping street and they have not necessarily come down. Another issue is the growth of North Avenue as a shopping destination. When I moved to Chicago in 2003, North Avenue west of Halsted was mostly old semi-abandoned warehouses. Now it is a major destination, and unlike the old Armitage corridor, is mostly made up of big chain stores.

  • In addition to the points Anthony made, the decreased population density is a factor. Many of the older three flats which once dominated the area have been remodeled into, or replaced by single family homes. A lot which may have once held three apartments with 3-4 people living in each, now is home to a single family of 4. This decreased density leads to less people doing day-to-day shopping and eating in the neighborhood so while the "destination" restaurants/retail can survive the more mom & pop places cannot.

Typical Francis Parker Parking Job

This is a twice-a-day, everyday occurrence.

School won't address.

Alderman's office won't solve.

Police won't enforce.

  • krw

I am an alumni and know all too well that the parents and their money allow for their and their kids affluenza. Nothing will change unless you try and shame them some how by posting a photo of their violation or something to that effect.
