State Police Checks at Division and 94 on Fridays

Anyone know why the State Police are doing "random" car checks at the intersection and on ramp heading south onto I94? I have seen this on two different Friday afternoons now. They look at the people in the cars and tell certain cars to pull over under the highway underpass. Just wondering what is going on. Thanks!

  • The car may have matched a description used in a crime. Witnesses could have said it was a blue sedan headed on the kennedy...

Gun shots

Shots fired at 1:10, 1:11, 1:17, and 2 at 1:18 am on Sunday 6/24

  • I heard them, too. They sounded like they were in the alley it was so loud but hard to say where they were coming from. We called the police but I didn't see any car drive down the alley.

  • Where? Could it have been fireworks?

  • Definitely was not fireworks. They sound much different. Especially when in succession so close together. Also it was back on June 24, but thanks for the suggestion.

Fireworks at James Otis park this year?

Just moved to neighborhood and heard that the park at James Otis does awesome fireworks every year... Anyone know if they will be on display this 4th of July again?

  • Hi, Alexandra. We've been here 15 years, and they've been done every 4th. They stage them in the faculty parking lot at Otis. Many people line the sidewalks on Grand Ave. with chairs to watch. But you can view from the entire immediate area. They do 3-4 displays, I believe. Just a heads up. it's VERY loud since it's in a residential area. and smoky of you're downwind. Have fun!

  • Thank you! We literally live across the street, so will give our guests on the 4th a heads up as we watch from our roof deck💥💥💥💥

Nanny Share Available

I have a 2 month old and am returning to work July 30. I have a wonderful nanny lined up who has been with my family for a few years now (she cared for my older daughter prior to us sending her to school). We are looking for a family to join us in a share at our house on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. The nanny is also available on Mondays and Wednesday’s but we do not need childcare on those days. If you are interested in discussing a share please let me know.

5 adorable workers cottages for sale in Chicago right now

Many of the workers cottages built between 1830 and 1890 still exist in neighborhoods like Bucktown, Wicker Park, Ukrainian Village, and Pilsen. An art sculpture is even going up at Wood Street and Milwaukee Avenue to honor the home type.

5 adorable workers cottages for sale in Chicago right now
Workers cottages were the go-to homes for working families in the 19th century. Thousands of them were built to help reconstruct the city after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, but where are they today? Unlike the abundant bungalows and greystones, preservationists are worried workers cottages are getting demolished way too frequently.

Haymarket is a workmanlike ode to the working man

Through 7/22: Thu-Sat 7:30 PM, Sun 3 PM, Mon 7:30 PM, Den Theatre, 1331 N. Milwaukee, 773-697-3830, underscoretheatre.org, $30-$35, industry and students $15.

Haymarket is a workmanlike ode to the working man
Yes, Underscore Theatre's reworked 2016 "new folk musical" about the titular violent 1886 Chicago labor protest and its hopelessly corrupt aftermath features singing and dancing anarchists (who play musical instruments to boot). But both Nick Thornton's no-frills choreography and Robert Ollis's straight-ahead musical direction are fittingly-if unengagingly-workmanlike.

Home builder suggestions?

Hi all, We've thought about building in the neighborhood, but all the GC's we've spoken to seem to be price gouging. Doing a hail mary pass here, can anyone suggest a home builder that's ethical, with reasonable prices? Every builder we've spoken to seems to look at the land prices in the area, look up the most expensive new houses in the area, subtract the two and then gives us the build price, leaving no equity. Two GC's outright admitted that that's how they determined the bid price.
Thanks for any helpful suggestions.

  • There is also the 'premium' charged for a trendy neighborhood. East of Western is one price, west of western another. I've had contractors tell me that.

  • Scott Rappe Architect, Father, Fourth Generation East Villager

We are a local architectural firm that focuses on custom residential design. We have a very good builder that we partner with to do design-build. This is a good approach if you want good custom design within a specific budget. Check out www.kplusr.com and feel free to give me a call. No obligation.
