The project to build a new Illinois Veterans ...

The project to build a new Illinois Veterans Home in Chicago turns out to be way more screwed up than I’d imagined. It’s so bad the state Capital Development Board is preparing to pay to partially demolish, then redo, the incomplete five-story shell of a building under construction at 4250 N. Oak Park Avenue.

BROWN: Illinois Veterans Home delays may register on Richter scale
The project to build a new Illinois Veterans Home in Chicago turns out to be way more screwed up than I'd imagined. In addition to the previously-reported delays related to the state budget impasse, state records show the restart of construction on the 200-bed facility has been stalled by the discovery of a major design error in the original building plans.

  • Helli 15 Irving Woods Area

I drive by there everyday,it is deplorable. How is it possible that the mayor is planning on building a school down the street? I understand the difference between state and city funding, how does something like this get started? But some how the money disappears. Our veterans deserve much more respect than this. More than likely the whole structure will have to be torn down as all has been exposed to the elements.
Again more of our money down the drain

  • PJ monitor

The Federal Government put their money in, the Great State of Illinois didn't because they couldn't agree on a budget, they would rather fight than think of the Veterans

Post Office on Irving Park/Narragansett

I don't suppose I need to go into detail...however, the Post Office on Irving Park and Narragansett is much to be desired...meaning the employees there are terribly rude and I am not just speaking of one person...most that I have come into contact with...as well as the post man....and can anyone tell me why he wears a towel over his head and eyes? He wears this towel winter, spring, summer and fall. At first I thought it was because of...

At first I thought it was because of allergies as it was in the springtime when I first noticed it...but it is all seasons. Anyway, I digress...I don't believe anyone ought to lose their job, however, maybe the city can transfer these employees around from area to area...it is usually the first 6 months when they are new that they are polite and helpful....after that...forgetaboutit! As I am writing this my stomach is turning because I have a package to send...I think I will go to the one on Fullerton and Sheffield....that way the rudeness and inefficiency won't affect me so much because it isn't in the area that I represent and live in. Have a good day!

  • We have had the same mail carrier for years. He is family to each of us, a genuine friendly caring man. His name is Jetta.

Too bad the front desk at the post office can't learn a thing or two from him.

  • In my limited experience at this particular post office (3-4 visits tops), I have nothing bad to say about the staff.

Yes, Robin, that would work so much better than posting random questions on here. Just some ideas.

  • kb

Penny, my apologies if my “random question” offended or frustrated you or anyone else. I mistakenly thought this was a community board open to such inquiries. You’ve enlightened me. And for the record, the time between the event and my posting was spent on the phone with the police in attempt to get more information. I was not provided with any - other than that fire & rescue were enroute. Thanks again for your constructive criticism.

Tires squealing Friday evening around 10:45-11PM

About 1045-11 PM heard tires squealing approximately Addison and Mobile about 10-15 seperate squealing events and an audible scream from a female. Then shortly after a host of sirens were heard. Does anyone know what happened? Cant find anything around the internet or news sources on it.

  • Andy x

We were listening to the scanner. That, in itself, was kind of funny when the guys didn't respond to the dispatcher. She tended to get a little snarky. Lots of parties were going on. One had a loudspeaker system in addition to the loud stereo. But nothing on this.

  • It takes 20 minutes from 911 call to dispatch to arrival.

Today's meeting of the Chicago Plan Commission approved a diverse selection of new private and public developments. Alderman Sposato's resignation from Democratic Committeeman

I read that Alderman Sposato stepped down from his elected position as Democratic Committeeman. He said he is the most conservative member in the city council. I missed the entire article that maybe explains why he quit and what he means by his statement. Can anyone fill us in as to why he quit and what his reasons were?

Recycling Cans

Two groups of people, hours apart, walked down the alley today in the 6000 block of Waveland and stopped at my fence, talking. Both groups opened my blue can and looked inside, then walked away. Has anyone else seen this? I'm curious as to what they may have been looking for.

  • I bag my metal cans for the pickers as well. It's little effort for me and easier for them. It still gets recycled.

  • Thanks everyone, for your responses. If it had been one or two people each time, I might think they were looking for cans, but these were groups, as in six or seven people. I'll probably never know.

Seeking Contractor: Window Capping

Seeking a contractor to cap exterior windows on 2-story Georgian - any referrals or reccommendations?

Near Belmont Heights neighborhood.

  • I wouldn't do capping. Eventually, the seal will loosen, and water will get inside and rot out the wood, and you will not know because the capping is hiding it.

  • Mark 60634 Foundation crack repair pro

My guys would do the capping. If it's white or brown price would be $85 per window including materials such as aluminum and caulk.
