Rats are everywhere in East Village!

Has anyone else in East Village noticed the increase in rats this winter? We've always noticed them in our alleyway--but this year gigantic rats have been invading front properties, digging holes in yards & under foundations, and hanging out on the sidewalks/parkways in the middle of the day. I work from home & have to witness this all the time (I don't think most people even realize what happens on their lawns in the middle of the day). Rats ate...

Rats ate all the tubes in our neighbor's car engine, which I didn't even know was possible...

I've applied to get a feral cat colony: rat-baiting, filling holes, warning people to pick up after dogs/use garbage lids, etc have done absolutely zero to stop the onslaught of rats. When the humane society came to do the site inspection to assess suitability for housing a feral cat colony, the only area on our block that did not seem to have rat holes is currently patrolled by another feral cat colony, at the other end of the block. We (and our immediate neighbors) are sold on the idea.

That said, I've read that some people are against the feral cat colonies even though the animals are well-cared for, fixed, and vaccinated. Can someone shed some light on why some people would rather have the rat infestations than a well-cared for cat community? I'm really puzzled by this.

This week there are so many great events to enjoy from concerts, readings, artist showcases, and live drawing! Many of these shows are free; an added bonus to going out under these little raindrops.

Thank you Maggie and Katie for finding my Mothers dog

My 85 year old mothers beagle got out of the yard and thanks to Katie and Maggie and i do hope i got your names right, Cuddles was found and got her back to her panic stricken owner.
You phoned and i met you about noon today near Chicago Ave and Western Ave.
I could not chat and truly express my thanks for my 85 yr old mother on the snowy icy sidewalks searching and in a panic.
You offered a lift but living a block away the ride would have been too round about.
I just want to say THANKS

    Hi Karen,
Katie and I were happy to help out your family get Cuddles back safe and sound. She was such a sweet dog that we both knew someone had to be looking for her. We're both dog lovers so we're glad to know that she wasn't hurt in traffic and that she was returned to her home without harm. Funny story actually, I've been thinking about getting a dog for a couple months now. I took finding Cuddles as a sign that I should get one myself so Katie and I went out and adopted a dog later that day. All in all, I should be thanking you (or Cuddles) because without this incident I probably would not have adopted my new Bernese Mountain Dog, Lucy!

Hope you and your family are doing well and Cuddles is staying out of trouble. Thank you!

  • Outlaw leaving packages? We can't even enforce the illegality of bold face shooting someone dead in broad daylight. Good luck with that one. Merry Christmas to all and peace on earth (especially Chicago) and goodwill to all.

  • This is both sad and frustrating. Consider these solutions...I saw that Walgreens was accepting FedEx packages for customers. Amazon has locations where you can have them delivered. There may be other options like that available at no additional cost. I started having packages delivered to my office but I can see where that might not work well. Letting anything over the size of an envelope be delivered to your mailbox is really risky. Hope this helps.
