Gubernatorial candidates slammed Mayor Rahm Emanuel at forum

Chicago State University President Dr. Rachel Lindsey was all smiles after a Nov. 16 Gubernatorial Forum hosted by CSU. Joining Lindsey (from left) were Democratic candidates J.B. Pritzker, Tio Hardiman, Bob Daiber, state Sen. Daniel Biss, and Chris Kennedy.

All five candidates said they would support having an elected school board for Chicago Public Schools; would change the funding formula to pay for education from property taxes to an income tax; would fight to make public colleges and community colleges in Illinois free; and would not support Mayor Rahm Emanuel if he was running for reelection today.

South Side pastor protest security doors used by 5/3 Bank

The Rev. Michael Pfleger, pastor of Saint Sabina Church in Auburn Gresham, led a protest on Friday outside two 5/3 Bank branches on the South Side regarding its use of security doors.

According to Pfleger, both South Side branches have a two-tier door system customers must pass through before being allowed inside. Branches Downtown and in neighborhoods whose residents are mostly white, the security feature is not used even though most bank robberies occur Downtown.

Officials with 5/3 Bank was unavailable for comment.

It looks like this is a done deal and the Obama Presidential Library will be forced on Jackson Park, right off the Lakefront, tearing up precious park green space and bringing huge amounts of traffic to our East Hyde Park area. This library should have been built west of Washington Park not tearing up any green park space right near the Green Line elevated CTA 55th street station - excellent public transportation. The Black AA American neighborhoods West of Hyde Park desperately need investment and tourist $s. This would have been a great, positive investment in underserved neighborhoods and extended the peace and prosperity of the Hyde Park University community West.I am sad to have to say that the Obamas especially Michelle Obama, Ariel Capital President Mellody Hobson (wife of $ billionaire Star Wars Director George Lucas) are very elitist snobs - they only hang out in super posh expensive parts of Chicago or Martha's Vineyard, Beverly Hills. The Lucas star wars museum had to be downtown right next to Soldiers Field or else it went to LA - it went to LA.

I note that Barack Obama has never attending any school in Hawaii or Harvard Law School with a tuition of less than $30,000 a year and his daughters do the same (University of Chicago Lab School, Washington DC Friends School). So the Obama's and Hollywood Lib Celebrities like to push themselves off as champions of the Poor Black masses, community organizers, but they just want the votes of poor Black AA and refuse to social mix in anyway with them or invest in meaningful ways in poor Black AA communities. It's no wonder Chicago's Black African American population has fallen by ~ 50% since 2000 as our poor people relocate to Red States governed by Republicans. Very sad.

Cook County vacates felony convictions for 15 black men

Here's what Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx (who once lived at the Cabrini Green public housing complex) had to say today about her decision to vacate felony convictions for 15 men wrongly imprisoned:

175 years ago today, Chicago auctioned off a black man
The handbills posted in Chicago declared: "A Man for Sale." And on Nov. 14, 1842 - 175 years ago today - an African-American man was auctioned off near the corner of LaSalle and Randolph. He may be the only black person ever legally sold into slavery in Chicago.

Englewood Quality of Life Plan II Celebrates Its One Year Anniversary

On Saturday December 2nd 11AM-12:30PM, at Volunteers of America (6002 S. Halsted), the Englewood community will celebrate the one year anniversary of the Englewood Quality of Life Plan (EQLP). In April 2015, Englewood residents celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the 2005 Englewood Quality of Life Plan I. In January 2016, the community reconvened to begin the work of drafting an updated community-driven Quality of Life Plan. Attendees met to address issue areas deemed most important to the community. Each task force developed visions, goals and strategies to restore Englewood as one of Chicago’s leading communities. The steering committee convened, representing each aldermanic ward, business and community leaders. The result was a comprehensive plan focusing on Health & Wellness, Education & Youth Development, Jobs & Economic Development, Public Safety, and Housing & Public Spaces.

News coverage of black neighborhoods in limbo

The sudden closure of DNAinfo.com has left a huge void in local reporting in Chicago especially positive stories about black neighborhoods on the South Side.

As a member of the 2012 launch team for DNAinfo Chicago, I am proud of the stories I wrote about Chatham, Park Manor, West Chatham, Pullman, Roseland, Englewood, Auburn Gresham, Grand Crossing, and South Chicago.

Good luck to all the wonderful reporters and editors at DNAinfo especially Andrea Watson, who took over my South Side beat in 2015, and did a fabulous job!

    November 2, 2017
A lot of what I believed would happen did, but not all of it. Today, DNAinfo and Gothamist deliver news and information each day to over half a million people's email inboxes; we have over 2 million fans across our social channels; and each month, we have over 15 million visits to our sites by over 9 million people.
