Has anyone else been followed recently?

I was followed home by a group of 3 people yesterday evening, and just wanted to see if it had happened to anyone else recently.I went slowly and even made a couple stops along the way and each time they were hanging back waiting for me. I've lived here for several years and have never had something like this happen before. It happened on Sheridan around 5:45. I can provide more details if necessary.

Did you miss last night's participatory budgeting meeting? You'll get another chance tonight!

Last night in an exercise of Rogers Park-style democracy, 49th Ward residents crowded into a Sullivan High School classroom to learn about participatory budgeting and begin exchanging ideas on the type of infrastructure projects our community needs. Don’t worry if you missed it. You have another chance tonight to get on the “PB49” bandwagon!

Join your neighbors and me for the next Participatory Budgeting Neighborhood Assembly. It takes place TONIGHT, Tuesday, April 24th, 6:30 p.m. for free pizza courtesy of JB Alberto’s, and 7:00 p.m. for the start of the meeting, at the Paschen Park Fieldhouse, 1932 W. Lunt (just east of Damen).

Wheels stolen.

On my way to work this morning, I noticed a newer model Honda Accord on cement blocks. All 4 wheels had been stolen. This was at Fairfield and North Shore.

Finally, note that thieves are most interested in new tires and expensive wheels. If you don't provide them, you'll make your car a lesser target. Personally, I've always refused to pay for fancy, optional wheels, preferring the old style ones that generally come with cheesy hubcaps. I also don't bother with tire treatments that make the tires look shiny new. My car (a minivan) has never seen the inside of a detailing shop. Obviously, I'm not what you'd call a "car guy", because if I were, I couldn't stand to own a car that looks like mine. (Heck, would a real "car guy" be caught dead with the title deed to a minivan in the first place?) But when you live in a neighborhood known to be frequented by parts thieves, there's a lot to be said for the gritty look.

Thieves can buy key sets that include the lug nut lock keys as well. The next best defense is a quality alarm system that has a tilt sensor so when the car is jacked up the alarm goes off. My friend just had one installed by a local shop in wrp called mi sound chicago. They do great work.

Do you want to feel good again about democracy and voting?

Each year, I receive over $1 million from the City's "Aldermanic Menu" Program to spend at my discretion on infrastructure improvements in the ward. Rather than me deciding how to spend the money, I turn the decision-making power over to the residents of my ward through a process known as “participatory budgeting.”

Community volunteers come up with proposed project ideas and the entire ward votes on the proposals they would most like to see implemented. I agree to abide by the results of the vote.

The process for determining how to spend next year’s budget begins NOW. Over the next two weeks, I will host six “Neighborhood Assemblies” (five in English and one in Spanish) throughout the 49th Ward where people learn about Participatory Budgeting and begin to brainstorm ideas on projects they would like to see in the ward.

The first assembly takes place TONIGHT (Monday, April 23rd), 7:00 p.m., at Sullivan High School, 6631 N. Bosworth (between North Shore and Albion). Come early before the meeting at 6:30 p.m. and join us for free pizza, courtesy of J.B. Alberto's.

Can anyone explain why my Honda dealer would charge 1934.04 to replace a steering gearbox in a 2007 Honda CR-V. According to my NAPA catalogue the exact part costs 150.00.
Of course I’m not getting it done there.

Do not eat any kind of romaine lettuce, CDC warns
Public health officials are telling people to avoid all romaine lettuce. An E. coli outbreak linked to the vegetable has spread to at least 16 states and sickened at least 60 people, including eight inmates at an Alaska prison.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday that new information about the illnesses in Alaska led them to expand an earlier warning to avoid chopped romaine.. The CDC now says people should not eat any type of romaine lettuce, including whole heads and hearts of romaine. The exact source of the tainted lettuce has not been identified, but federal officials have said the contamination appears to come from lettuce grown in the Yuma, Ariz., region.

At least 31 people have been hospitalized, including five who developed a type of potentially life-threatening kidney failure known as hemolytic uremic syndrome. No deaths have been reported.

Don't count on a progressive income tax to bail out Illinois

There aren't enough taxpayers or ANY income level to bail out Illinois of its financial mess. The only help the federal government can provide will be a law to enable Illinois to declare bankruptcy:

  • Good neighbor: please refrain from name calling. I am not a selfish person and you don't know me. So very sad that a difference of opinion has to sink to name calling.

  • Those wealthy people you are slamming donate millions of dollars to charity, including museums, theaters etc. There are a lot of lower income people that also donate what they can. Bottom line we aren't in the upper 9% but are weighing our options because it is simply becoming impossible to keep up with the rising taxes and fees and fund our own retirement.

Each year, I receive over $1 million from the City’s “Aldermanic Menu” program to spend at my discretion on infrastructure improvements in the ward. Nine years ago, I implemented a “participatory budgeting” process in which the residents of my ward decide directly through popular vote how those tax dollars are spent.

Since then, scores of cities across the nation have emulated our process and just recently Participatory Budgeting became the subject of a PBS documentary.

The process for determining how to spend next year’s budget begins NOW. Over the next two weeks, I will host six “Neighborhood Assemblies” (five in English and one in Spanish) throughout the 49th Ward.

The first assembly takes place Monday, April 23rd, 7:00 p.m. (complimentary pizza served at 6:30 p.m.) at Sullivan High School, 6631 N. Bosworth (enter through the door in the middle of the block). If you can’t make this assembly, there are five more to choose from.

Missing 7-pound Maltese back home

Dolma, the super-cute 7-pound Maltese, has been reunited with her mistress in the 6600 block of North Talman. Dolma was in the front yard in the care of a visitor who turned his back for a second, and Dolma bounded away and out of sight. The next day, a neighbor living a block away saw a Maltese wandering aimlessly, and noticed printed notices on lamp posts about a lost Maltese. When he asked, “Are you Dolma?” and Dolma picked up her ears, he carried her back to her house and a grateful owner.

Much relieved and thankful to all who cared.

The Friends of Rogers Park Library celebrated National Library Week with giving away money! These funds will help purchase additional items, not in the city’s budget for our library. At our meeting on April 14, 2018, the last day of National Library Week, we approved sending a $1000 check to the Chicago Public Library Foundation. They will purchase many more books through their power of mass purchasing. They will buy additional children’s books just in time for the Summer Reading Program for our library. We will spend another $1500 to get live music performances, decorations, and materials also for this year’s Summer Learning Program from our account. We are able to raise these funds through our book sales and from a few generous donors. We thank all who buy books at our sales, we thank all our donors and we thank all the volunteers who help with the book sale. They help make the Rogers Park Library one of the busiest branch libraries with the many people coming to use our neighborhood learning resource.

Our next book sale is scheduled for Saturday, April 28, 2018, from 10 AM to 4 PM. Please come to our Spring Fling Book Sale, and buy an armload of books. Your purchases help us to help our library. We also need volunteers to help set up the sale on April 27 and help run and clean up after the sale on April 28. Sign up to volunteer at the Reference Desk. Just fill out a form, and give it to the reference librarian. If you can’t make it to the April 28th Book Sale, you can still donate to the Friends of the Rogers Park Library to help us strengthen our neighborhood learning center.

The Rogers Park Library is currently running out of storage space for new book donations. However, after the April 28 Book Sale, we will accept gently used books. If you are donating books, please do not put them in the Book Return, where they will be mixed with returning library books. It takes more time to sort through the returning and donated books. After April 28, gently used books can be dropped off at the Circulation Desk. Some of them may be immediately put into the library's collection. Also, check with our neighboring branch libraries like Edgewater and Bezazian who have Library Friends groups and are members of our Chicago Coalition of Library Friends. They have upcoming book sales. Thanks.

Looking to rent a parking place/garage

Hey RP neighbors. I'm looking for a garage rental or parking space beginning May 1, near Albion and Clark. Thanks in advance for any leads you can offer. I'm a great tenant, always pay my rent on time - considerate - and a nice person who cares about the world and the people in it. Thanks in advance.
