"I have been a tenant and condo owner in Rogers Park for over 25 years. Currently I am a biology tutor. My background is in public health, massage therapy and science education. I have advocated for tenant rights, such as adequate heat, and worked a local tenant hotline. I have been an advocate for universal healthcare for years. I speak Polish fluently and my husband, who is Swedish, speaks some Spanish. I love the diversity of Rogers Park but cannot stand how the city rips off drivers with high tickets and fines. I will be your advocate and an activist alderwoman for the 49th Ward in Chicago. Check out the many issues on my website and get involved on issues from potholes to parking to outrageous water and sewer bills in this city, as well as a moratorium on charter schools in our area."

Recent drowning calls for renewed focus on lakefront safety

Though we mourn the death of young Darihanne, we should not forget the brave first responders and community residents who put their own lives at risk in an attempt to rescue Darihanne and another girl, who fortunately survived. Please join me in thanking our police officers, firefighters and the countless Good Samaritans who did everything they could to save the two children.

This horrible tragedy reminds us of the critical importance of beach safety and has prompted impassioned conversations and suggestions about what we can do to prevent such tragic events in the future. These include calls for extended lifeguard hours, more signage, enhanced water safety education for people of all ages and better training for public safety officers responding to water safety emergencies.

I spoke to the Joe Moore face to face about this tragedy and others we've had in the past. He gets it and is extremely disturbed by any and all of these deadly incidents. While he's being proactive and putting a plan into place... you're missing so much of the solution due to it being far beyond your comprehension and need to politicize it. Shame on you.

As a certified PADI diver and living on this lake my entire life, the problem is not only about extending lifeguard hours, it goes far beyond what any lifeguard can do since many of these tragic incidents happen off season and farther out than any lifeguard could get too... even if they were on duty, many are to far out to even see.

Many safety features need to be put into place and most important is teaching people how to swim, dealing with issues such as hypothermia and rip currents while understanding just how dangerous this lake is.

We were not in the position to restore the library hours cut in 1992. However, we tried to find a way to keep our neighborhood library relevant. They were a popular attraction and were heavily used.
Alderman Moore’s office contributed computers that were made into learning stations. Students can learn to type and be drilled on basic arithmetic. Though these were not the state of the art PCs, their useful life was extended and well used by students of all ages.
As the lead organization of a city-wide coalition, the Friends of the Rogers Park Library successfully campaigned to restore the library hours in 1993 and Mary Dempsey was appointed Library Commissioner in 1994. She made it a priority to connect the Chicago Public Library to the Internet. When we opened on June 8, 1999, in a new facility, it had six top of the line desktops connected to the Internet. The Chicago Public Library for many more users was their only on-ramp to the Information Superhighway.
Unfortunately, branch library hours were again cut back in 2010 during the last economic download. Though our branch library still has shorter hours, we now have 24 PCs connected to the Internet, 12 on the Adult side, and 12 on the children’s side. We even have Cyber Navigators, funded by the Chicago Public Library Foundation to assist those who are using computers for the first time, and for those who need reminders on their lessons. There is even a scanner that will copy your old photos and documents into a jpg file, and for a small fee print copies.
Join the Friends of the Rogers Park Library and help keep our library relevant.

Comcast to end hyperlocal site EveryBlock, agrees to send users to rival Nextdoor

The news aggregation was occasionally laughable, but it did start some useful discussions that might not have been started by a neighborhood poster, especially since the "neighborhoods" are defined much too tightly. I have had a Nextdoor ID since the previous time Everyblock was about to die, but I rarely used it or even checked it, since I have personally found only a few useful posts, mixed in with many things Everyblock would consider advertising.

  • I did learn a lot about local politics and gained a new perspective about our elected officials. That has definitely been an eye opener.

Could someone please suggest an authentic and not mediocre Mexican restaurant?

Having trouble finding a good Mexican restaurant in the RP area?
I am forced to go to the ones I'm familiar with that are authentic on Lawrence, Kedzie and elsewhere, like Big Wig tacos and burritos on LaSalle and Chicago Avenue ! I just would like a local Taco and not have to travel far.

THANKS RP citizens !

  • GaToR Cherokee I am a comedian, actor, singer

Edgewater tacos better be very fresh if they charge in a astounding $375 + $275 / taco !!

  • Jeffrey Littleton If you can't be a poet, be the poem.

It's south of RP but Carmela's on Lawrence just west of Broadway makes the best carnitas tacos around.

Apartment Rental

I'm looking for a studio or 1 bedroom apartment where I am about 40 minutes by transit to 175 N State street. I am a single woman so safety is a premium. $700-800 is my range. Any suggestions would be helpful. It doesn't have to be Roger's Park. Thank you .

  • steven beckerman Lifelong resident of the Rogers Park neighborhood.

Hate to say it, but in that price range, you're probably looking at studios, or sharing a larger apartment with roommates. That travel range would put you up near Loyola, or one of the red line stops nearby or to the south. Studios abound up and down Winthrop and Kenmore in Edgewater.

The CityKey Card is an optional, officially recognized government-issued identification card that you can use to access a range of public and private services. It is designed to reduce barriers to those who have difficulty accessing traditional government-issued identification, such as undocumented immigrants, youth, the homeless, transgender residents, domestic violence survivors, and those recently released from incarceration.

The Program’s goals have since grown to include discounts and other benefits for all of Chicago’s 2.7 million residents. This means that not only does the Chicago CityKey give Chicagoans the dignity and peace of mind that comes with having a government-issued ID, but it also serves as your key to Chicago– serving as your library card, Ventra card and benefits card for cultural institutions, sports teams and local businesses.

"Chicago Police Officer Steve Ommundsen, who was among the first on the scene Friday. Ommundsen responded to a call of swimmers in trouble in the choppy waters off Loyola Beach. It was about 7:30 p.m. after lifeguards had gone home for the night. Ommundsen, himself a former Chicago lifeguard, immediately stripped to his underwear and dove in the water, swimming about 100 yards to a girl who was floating motionless in the water."

“She was barely conscious,” Ommundsen said. “She wasn’t really aware of what was happening.”

“Her body was already under the water,” he said. “I wish I would have been able to get them both.”

Officer Steve Ommundsen is a member of the patrol for our Beat 2431. He is the officer on the right-side in the picture I took on our beat walk with 24th District Commander Nieves, Kevin O'Neil from Alderman Moore's office, Carolina Juarez from the Rogers Park Business Alliance, and another outstanding officer in our beat Matt Mckenna on June 18.

I commend Officer Ommundsen for his lifesaving actions. His selflessness, putting his own life at risk, exemplifies the spirit of our 24th Police District whose officers who do their best to serve and protect us. The other picture shows the second watch bike officers who patrol the lakeshore of our neighborhood. Also, Alderman Moore is working with the Chicago Park District to make lifesaving gear readily available to first responders at our beaches.

Mourners gather at Loyola Beach to honor 13-year-old girl who drowned in Lake Michigan

Darihanne, of the 7400 block of North Damen Avenue, was pronounced dead just before 10:15 p.m.

Mourners gather at Loyola Beach to honor 13-year-old girl who drowned in Lake Michigan
Bunches of white balloons bobbed down the beach Monday as a procession of mourners somberly made its way down Loyola Beach. Around 200 people gathered in the warm, early evening and huddled near where the pavement met the sand. On a poster board propped up in the sand, a young girl smiled playfully, her face ornamented with different Snapchat filters.

  • Where the heck was the lifeguard? Why is this poor little angel dead?

  • Tammy Schrader Mom on the Near North Side

Life Guards leave at 7pm. Children and Adults wait until they leave and go and do things they would never do while a life guard us on duty. Seen it happen too many times. The mother of the children was at the beach with the kids. One report from the Tribune said that the mom told the kids not to go in the water but some kids never listen.

  • Tammy Schrader Thanks for saying what has gone on at the beaches forever. This was a tragic drowning, but there would need to be lifeguards posted 24/7 to prevent kids (and adults) from going into the water at night.

Does anyone know how to find out who is the owner/landlord of a rental property? I live next door to a home that has been converted into a two-unit property. The renters in one of the units leave their dog out for extended periods of time and the dog barks a LOT. I tried a nice letter when I moved in last summer, and was treated to a series of nasty texts in return, though the owners said they would buy a no-bark collar for the dog. Well, it's warm out again, and the dog is barking again. I want to go straight to the landlord now, but have no idea who it is.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Where is the security deposit?

How does one find if one's Security deposit is not comingled with the landlord's money? The building has more than 20 units

  • I think when tenants live out the security deposit they see it as a right. It is their money as they see it an really there is nothing you can do when they do that. If bad tenants and bad landlords were only in business with each other that might work. When I as a good landlord get a couple of bad apples I have to eat it. I have great tenants now.

  • d3 NoHo

Kuria: the law allows you to sue the landlord, and that all fees for your attorney and court would be paid by the landlord. There are attorneys that will take these cases with no cost to you except they take a cut of what you win (and they end up getting thousands in fees too paid by the landlord)

Tips for first time home buyers in Evanston

Hello, All

Wondering if people have any suggestions on resources (threads on EB, mailing lists, meetups, ...) to help somebody who's looking to buy their first home in Evanston get up to speed on the market, Evanston taxes & rules, etc.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

BB

  • That's what a good Realtor can do - at no cost to the buyer. Ask around, talk to a few and choose one you/re comfortable with who knows the area and market well. We bought last year with the help of an invaluable guy with a deep knowledge of all things RP/Edgewater. Best of luck to you!

  • Wendy Small-town living in the big city

Agree with Robin about NextDoor and with David about Realtors. We moved to Evanston from the city two years ago and our Realtor was super-helpful -- she knew Evanston really well and understood what would be important for our family. One thing to be aware of is the preservation ordinance and historic districts -- be sure to understand if you're in a district and if your house is a landmark, and how either designation might affect you.

  • The picture above speaks
    a thousand words, It hurts
my heart to see what the mother is going through.
    A mother or any mother
    that looses her child,is very
    devastating.
I am very sorry this happen
    to her baby.
    when children pass on
I do believe tears fall from
