Sheridan road panhandling out of control again

I had to move because Bjb bought my building, but I still attend classes in the general area.
It went in cycles, the aggressive panhandling, during my residency, the worst when there was a McDonald's express next to Loyola red line. Such fine individuals, very community-service oriented would run in, announce which busses were arriving and then demand payment for this unasked for service.

Going to Cvs or Taco Bell is usually an invitation for some desperate person to rapidly approach you and violate your personal space.
I especially take issue with well groomed, clean individuals standing less than five feet from Five guys making it impossible to enter without an interaction with them.
One woman has a very shiny, well maintained bald head. Her regular spot is far too close to the entrance of Five Guys.

I shave mine in solidarity with a family member on chemo and I have stubble by 1pm, if this person can keep it up that well they arent homeless or even marginally housed.
I am well aware people are moving out of nursing and group homes en masse into section 8 subsidized apartments into the zipcode, maybe their caseworkers will see this and address the issue a bit better.

So to my point, this leadership advocates for the person to block entry to a business. To harass and intimidate people trying to frequent business.

About the defication it was one panhandlers favorite method of revenge on a business that she felt offense.

Animal abuse

I saw this man and woman on a northbound red line tonight. I'm not sure when they got on, but somewhere around Fullerton or Clark/Division, and they were still on when I got off at Morse. They had a dog stuffed into a suitcase with it's head sticking out--the zipper appeared too tight on it's neck. They continually batted it's face and seemed almost like they were trying to stuff him inside further.

They continually batted it's face and seemed almost like they were trying to stuff him inside further.

I confronted them and they seemed completely unconcerned about the mistreatment. I switched cars to call the police, and also informed the driver. Two other witnesses said that after I switched cars, the couple became verbally belligerent. I don't believe any action has been taken yet.

If you see these people carrying this dog around, please report to police or animal shelter!

Loyola Redline Mugging This Weekend

I'm not seeing it in the news yet but apparently a young man was mugged Saturday night and has now died from the head trauma he sustained. A friend of his posted this on facebook. "He was found early Saturday morning at the Loyola station in Chicago. He was laying at the bottom of the stairs with his wallet missing and with serious head trauma."
This is all the info I have and just wanted my neighbors to be aware.

  • Lewis "Lou" Keemia Who cares about your feelings

I own a very expensive jacket and at the Howard El two young men ran right at me and jammed their hands in my pockets.
I kicked one with my steel capped boot and I hope he fondly recalls the moment.

Right at the turnstile. The cta security guards know who's who and they don't do anything to protect paying customers.

Last year, we packed three buses with over 150 Rogers Park residents, who traveled downtown to join 250,000 women and their allies who raised their voices for issues each of us hold dear. That historic day embodied the ongoing fight for women’s rights.

This Saturday, we will come together again to celebrate the spirit of the resistance efforts over the past year and unite to focus on the 2018 elections and beyond.

The 49th Ward is clearly strong and united and the March to the Polls this Saturday is an important act of resistance. Please join us for this historic march.

Christmas Tree Pickup/Recycle? - YES!

I just wanted to give an enthusiastic shout-out to the non-profit group, Do The Right Thing - Recycling (http://dtrt-recycling.org/). They just came to my 3rd floor walkup (yes, at 8pm on a Saturday!) and did an exceptional job removing my tree and taking it to be recycled. Well worth the door-to-door $25 donation/charge. (It's only $15 if you meet them at the curb.) Check them out and schedule away your worries of the schlep.

Tree Recycling Program - Do The Right Thing! Recycling
Do The Right Thing! Recycling is offering holiday tree pickup services for the north side of Chicago. We pick up your tree directly from your living room floor. We come equipped with reusable tarps and cords, and all we ask is that you remove all decorations from the trees including lights and tinsel.

He personally waits on the tables and carefully explains every dish on the menu before he goes back to the kitchen to prepare the meal. Lido is a wonderful artist whose work graces the walls throughout the restaurant. She is also the mastermind behind the delicious apple cake. Tony makes all his food fresh daily and combines his family-owned sensibilities with European, North American and South American influences. Tony and Lido are excited about showcasing their new restaurant to the Rogers Park community. As Tony says, “We are jamming with our taste buds, we keep it simple, basic and fresh.” Please join me in welcoming Tony and Lido to Rogers Park! Some years ago the northwest corner of Glenwood & Dwevon was owned by Kaplan, who rented out apartments to pimps, prostitutes and drug dealers. Then UPS moved east to their current location. I don't know if Kaplan owns the corner site of the old drug store that vacated a few years ago. Anybody know what Kaplan is up to, or whether he still owns property in the neighborhood. His rentals were bad news.

Six new police officers hit the streets in Rogers Park this week, as Chicago Police deployed 53 new officers across the City’s 23 police districts. The deployments are the latest installment of the plan to grow the Chicago Police Department by nearly 1,000 officers.

The new deployments come at a time when the 49th Ward is experiencing a significant decrease in gun violence.

Despite a series of horrific shooting incidents last fall, which included the death of school teacher Cynthia Trevillion and the injury of a young man who was a target of gang recruitment, the 49th Ward last year experienced a 33% decrease in homicides as compared to 2016 and a 31% decrease in shooting incidents.

The reduction in shooting incidents continued a trend that began two years ago. Since 2015, the 49th Ward has seen a 42% decrease in shootings.

That's privately owned property on Morse to the east of the Mayne Annex, The Mayne Stage, JB Albertos and across the street from another Tawani project that is under development right now. Is Bruce claiming some authority over telling the owner of private property what they can or can't do with their own property? Contrary to the claim above, it's not "next to another vacant lot". The owner is using that lot as a parking area in support of a highly successful business on Morse Avenue. It's not "vacant" or unused. Is there a point to posting these photos of privately owned property?

Thanks, Robin; happy to hear about this new produce option in our area. Any advice about how apt/condo residents can arrange deliveries? Any local businesses that may be acting as a CSA delivery host for this, the way the natural food store near the RP Waldorf school did?

Hi Nancy - I've read about this company, but they are new to Chicago. I will get my first delivery in one week. They do have flexible hours; our delivery will be in the evening. I suggest dropping them an email for more information.

Maybe you and a neighbor or two can take turns accepting deliveries? Our delivery will be every other Monday

  • I just joined last week, too -- looking forward to my first delivery!

Where are the good job at in Rogers Park?

Im not going to lie to you guys I want a nice job in my community. I mean sometimes I dont mind the travel from work and back, it kind of eases my mind, but I would love it better if there were more jobs that pay well here in Rogers Park.

Where are the job opportunities? 😓

  • robin in WRP I support a 28th Amendment 4Free & Fair Elections!
  • Is indeed job really legitimate

  • robin in WRP I support a 28th Amendment 4Free & Fair Elections!

Indeed aggregates positions from other websites, along with positions posted by companies directly to Indeed. You can also try simplyhired.com, but their search function is less targeted. Many smaller businesses use craigslist.org. Nonprofits often use Idealist. Some companies only post positions on their websites; these positions are often picked up by Indeed and Simply Hired, but not always.

You need to treat finding a job as a job.

    Good luck!

2018 to be another rough year for Chicago taxpayers
2017 was particularly hard on Chicago taxpayers, who were hit with a major state income tax hike, the latest in a series of property tax increases at City Hall and Chicago Public Schools, and a new city tax on water and sewer service.

  • You know this is really interesting.

My 49th Ward Service Office will be CLOSED for the holidays from Friday, December 22nd, at 2:00 p.m. to Tuesday, January 2nd, at 9:00 a.m.

This will provide my staff members, who routinely work far more than 40 hours a week, an opportunity to spend time with their families during the holiday week when calls and emails to my office are almost non-existent.

Though the Ward Service Office will be closed, the City of Chicago will continue to provide 49th Ward residents with garbage and recycling pick-up and other routine city services, with the exceptions of Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Because Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on a Monday this year, if you receive City garbage and recycling pick-up on Monday, your garbage and recycling will be collected on Tuesday. If you receive City garbage and recycling pick-up on Tuesday, you may not get your garbage and recyclables picked up until Wednesday. Please have your carts accessible starting Tuesday.

Snow removal and other emergency services always will be provided regardless of the holidays.

For non-emergency city service requests during the holiday week, email or call my office and leave a message (email:ward49@cityofchicago.org; phone: 773-338-5796). We will return your email or telephone message promptly on Tuesday, January 2nd, and address your issue then.

If you have a city service request that requires immediate attention, please call 311. Of course, if you have a police, fire, or medical emergency, you should always call 911.

I hope that the year ahead is filled with hope, health and happiness for you and your family.

On behalf of myself, my family and my tireless and dedicated staff–Kevin O’Neil, Michael Land, Wayne Frazier, Ann Hinterman, Cecilia Salinas and Bob Fuller–I wish you a blessed holiday season and a wonderful and prosperous New Year!

Residents at Caroline Hedger Senior Apartments lose heat during Chicago’s frigid temps

"This is the second year in a row some residents there have complained of heating problems.

“I've been sleeping in three sweaters, two pajama pants because it's cold and I've been very sick and it seems to be getting worse,” Stephanie Hayes, a resident in the building, said."

Residents at North Side senior center lose heat during Chicago's frigid temps
CHICAGO -- Wednesday's dangerously cold temperatures had some residents at a senior center on the North Side complaining after they said their heat wasn't working. The Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) denied there were any issues at the Caroline Hedger building on the 6400 block of North Sheridan Avenue in Rogers Park, but some senior residents said their heat has not been working properly.

What a wonderful parent! My parents keep reminding me how they are getting old and would like me to move in with them to take care of them. While most of Myanmar's Rohingya Muslims who escaped harrowing violence ended up in camps in Bangladesh, some have made it to the U.S. That includes dozens of young Rohingyas who have become students in Chicago's public schools. (I received this via a CAPS email)
As reported by one of our neighbors and verified by CPD District 24, an assault and attempted robbery took place at the Estes Avenue Metra viaduct on Monday, 18 December, at approximately 5:45 pm. According to the victim, with whom I spoke a few minutes ago, she and her daughter were followed by a man as they walked north on Ravenswood from Greenleaf. Upon reaching the overpass, the man assaulted our neighbor from behind and was she was struck in the head by punches as the alleged attacker attempted to wrestle away a backpack that the woman was carrying. A passing motorist stopped to lend assistance at which point the man fled and used the unsecured gate at 1790 Estes to escape the scene.

I am pleased to report that the victim of the attack is doing well as is her daughter. It is expected for them both to be a little emotionally shaken so, I take the liberty as a neighbor to offer our collective support.

According to the official description provided by Sgt Sisk of the 24th District, the alleged attacker was a Black male, 5'6" to 5'8" in height.

However, additional information provided by the victim's husband suggests that the man appeared to have a limp and spoke with a bit of a slur. This last bit of information, along with the official description, describes someone with whom a few neighbors (including myself) have had some interaction.

Sgt. Sisk is following up with Area North detectives on the additional information so; if any of you know this alleged attacker, or his whereabouts, please communicate this to me or directly to CPD.

Please be aware of your surroundings and stay safe.
