City wants your input on Jefferson Park's future; meeting set for Jan. 22

Vision for Jefferson Park’s future will be on display at open house at 6:30 pm Monday, Jan. 22, at the Copernicus Center Annex, 5214 W. Lawrence Ave. The city wants your input.
http://nadignewspapers.com/2018/01/12/community-open-house-area-master-plan-set/

  • The City doesn't want our input. The City wants you to believe it wants your input. If the City were honest the headline would read "Chicago tells residents to pound sand, we'll do what we want and you'll like it."

  • I couldn't disagree more. Come on out and give an opinion. Otherwise you are right, there will not be any public input.

Sewer back-up & basement drain flooding

We are experiencing a basement drain flooding and sewer back up for a couple of days now. A plumber came to rode the pipes and pumped the backed up dirty water, but they can't get their rodding snake to get to the street - something is blocking it.
We wonder if this might be caused by the recent street utility work - some pipes work and some Poeple's Gas work.

Is anyone else experiencing a similar problem? We are the condo building on Gunnison and Kenneth's corner.

  • good advice from John, I'd follow it

  • Chandra Lynn Dagley Pre-Medicine Chaser From AP

Dead of winter last year, I want to say. I am on Avers. All good suggestion above me, we had someone come out with a camera, and it was a multifocal problem, because the neighbor (small bungalow) also had issues. Drain tiles were indeed a problem., and they are right about where city problem ends and ours began and some issues within the building where the landlords replaced some old pipe.

Fresh fruit delivery now available in our area - Imperfect Produce

We just signed up for this service so cant vouch for it yet but figured it was worth a shot. I know there are lots of people here who frequent the farmers markets and/or grow their own, so "imperfect" is probably not much of a concern.

It's a subscription service, so you have to order on a regular basis.

I received my first box this week. I forgot to pick my items, but was not disappointed at all!! The quality was fantastic. We are getting a small fruit and vegetable box every other week, but may change to every week. With the delivery charge, I think I paid around $10: celery, carrots, onions, red potatoes, spaghetti squash, lemons and oranges, the most beautiful head of red cabbage I've ever seen. All organic. No mail since December 28th?

Anyone noted that there has been no mail delivery in the Jefferson Park area since Dec 28th? I am told that the post office is very short of help. If you are having a problem, best to contact MIKE QUIGLY at 773-267-5926. You can also contact the post office at 708-667-4696 but they are not very helpful and rather rude.

The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) in cahoots with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has increased air traffic, noise and air pollution affecting thousands of families in the way we live, learn, play. Homes bulldozed, forests destroyed, cemeteries relocated for additional runways that affect the quality of life for thousands. Aspects to be thankful for:
- No Rats under the flight paths. Mayor Rahm allocated millions to eradicate rats in parts of Chicago. The communities under the O’Hare Flight paths are relatively rat free. Those toxic jet fuel emissions showering our neighborhoods sure do a fine job.
- CDA customer service. CDA police seriously beat a passenger aboard an aircraft for refusal to give up a paid for seat. CDA Commissioner Evans used the treatment of O’Hare community neighbors as examples on how to treat the public.
- O’Hare area Departure Tax. Of the 20 largest cities, Chicago is the only to lose population. As more people leave due to airport pollution and other quality of life issues, Mayor Rahm is instituting a Departure Tax at the airports but on U-Hauls leaving the city.
- FAA, servant of the public. US Rep Steve Lynch dubbed the FAA as the most unresponsive agency in government.
- Lower Property taxes. The Cook county assessor lowered some property assessments due to the effect of aircraft noise on home values. Mayor Rahm then proceeded to increase property taxes for all.
- The O’Hare Noise redistribution program. The CDA and puppet ONCC instituted a runway rotation plan to redistribute night flights over our communities. Now you and your children will know when to expect sleep interruption as opposed to being surprised.
- Loving the IRS. The FAA has beat out the IRS as the most despised federal agency.
-The big engine that couldn't. As O'Hare is touted as the economic engine for the Chicago area, why is it then that local taxes keep rising and services keep getting cut. In the words of many local politicos…Where’s mine.

  • Dan G Scratch and win

Lol a few more days and I can say farewell to Portshit Park and Chicago.

  • I occasionally hear a jet overhead (and I see them more often), but I get a lot more noise from the streets. Are other blocks so much quieter that the airplane noise is so much more substantial than the cars?

Senior housing considered for stalled development site at Six Corners where bank was demolished

Senior housing with ground-floor retail and medical uses are being considered for the stalled development site at Six Corners. One preliminary site plan for the 2.7-acre parcel at Milwaukee and Irving shows a 10-story building, but any housing development for the site is expected to undergo several revisions. Alderman John Arena said that any proposal for the former Bank of America property is “speculative” at this time and that discussions with the developer are continuing.

Status of new LED street lights?

Does anyone by chance know when Jefferson Park is slated to get the new LED street lights?

A few weeks ago there was a real windy day and the street pole on the corner (@my handle name ha) fell down.

I was surprised to see it replaced with the same style green metal pole (as a mile east the lights are on aluminum poles) but I digress- I was surprised the hadn’t used this time to add the new LED light pole or same old pole but add the led light in?

* I’m not saying that I am for or agains’t the new LED lights just curious when they are getting phased in.

Thank for your help.

  • Thanks, Brushman4, back at ya.

Seeking family for nanny share in Jefferson Park starting Nov 2017

Looking for another family interested in sharing a nanny in the Jefferson Park neighborhood (near Lawrence & Milwaukee) starting in November 2017. We are expecting our first child (a girl) in August and I will be returning to work in November. This commitment would be 5 days/week, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., give or take. We are open to any hosting arrangement (your place, ours, alternating weeks/months) so long as you are close by. Hope to hear from you!

We currently do a nanny share in Logan Square with our next-door neighbor and the convenience of having something so close by has been wonderful, so we're searching everywhere to find something similar. Package thief in the area

On saturday i had packages stolen from my front porch shortly after they were delivered. I have video and clear photos of the woman who is stealing packages. I have reported this to the police.
She is between 30-40yo, tall/ thin built, purple long puffer coat, jeans and brown ugg style boots. She has blond colored hair in braids, rolled up in a high bun. She is on foot and is carrying 2 large bags with her. She cases out the house before going back. Be careful with your packages. I doubt im the only one she has stolen from.

She said that she used to be able to do all of her Christmas shopping just by walking down the street (she lived on Higgins, near the park). She mentioned 4 or 5 department stores, many restaurants, and NO transportation terminal. From what she can remember, the area residents were told that building the terminal would bring tons of people and their money to the area. I asked her how that turned out, and she replied, with a sly smile, "Go take a look downtown."

I'm fascinated with history, and particularly local history. I'd love to hear from long-time residents about what used to be along Milwaukee in Jefferson Park, and where these places were. Was Ideal Bakery always the way it is now? What used to be in the corner building across from Hoyne Savings on Lawrence/Milwaukee? Seems like it must have been a pretty fancy joint at one time.
