Well there are three other people on this block that have the signs in front of their homes and each has a 2 1/2 car garage, one on next block same thing! He sent in an appeal and is waiting the results, if he is denied again, then what, The garage he has is used for storage, 8 people living in the house all fully grown. He said he saw the Dept of Finance van come by on this last Monday, but he was on his way to a Dr's appt and could not stop and talk to the man.

It is a long walk 1 1/2 blocks to get to his house with walker or crutches.
Thank you

smartypants, your post shows what is wrong with the country, and the world, no compassion for your fellow man. Your post says it that you feel someone that has had their left leg amputated and thus can not walk a block and a half without help should not be driving even tho his right leg is fine and it is the right leg that is used for the gas and brake in a vehicle. I pray that if anyone in your family ever becomes handicapped they do not run into a public official that has the same ideas as you.

Smartypants, I just had my Driver's License renewed and the State of Illinois requires medical certification for certain medical and disabling conditions. Seniors in the higher age brackets are retested more frequently.

Ald. Arena pledges to bring 50 CHA units to the ward
by BRIAN NADIG Alderman John Arena (45th) has pledged to bring 50 Chicago Housing Authority-sponsored apartments to the 45th Ward by the end of his term in the spring of 2019. Arena and six other aldermen recently signed the pledge as part of an effort that they say will help end segregation on the North and Northwest Side.
    http://nadignewspapers.com
  • It would have been totally different if Arena didn't declare war on his constituents. I found out back in April the state wasn't going to fund this fiasco and the more people like RR continue, the less likely 5150 will come to pass.

  • noman50 in this together

Isn’t it part of Arena’s responsibility to at least make an attempt to sell his aspirational projects to constituents in his ward? You know, work with the people living around here, who have some “skin in the game” on major ideas bubbling up by the powers that be. I would think that if he feels very strongly about an issue he would want to effectively marshal as much public support. Or doesn’t he think this kind of way of governance is possible?

The original post is well meaning but not very effective. The Executive branch, not Congress, is responsible for how US government agencies and department operate. The influence of your local Congressman on the USPS is limited, since all Congress does with the USPS is approve their requests for rate increases and budgets and changes to the days upon which mau[il is delivered.

The USPS is organised like a private business, which means that the local postmasters are responsible to regional managers and to the independent security group that monitors mail for theft and mishandling, the Postal Inspectors.

Each post office has service complaint forms which go to the local PO's postmaster. ou keep a paper copy. The online USPS.com website has a similar form which is sent to the office of the Postmaster Generl, and copied to the postal Inspection group and the local postmaster. I recommend the online form because it cannot be intercepted or lost. You can print a copy of your online submission, which gets a tracking number.

Regarding paying bills online, many people, including those who use online services are unclear on how it works.

The way to minimise your chances of identity theft is to limit the number of organizations with whom you voluntarily share personal information. Paying bills is not a leak of the information needed for identity theft. At most, it can be used in combination with public information to compromise that particular account.

Whether you physically mail a paper check or have your bank handle the transaction, the information in that transaction is the same. The one easiest to be lost or stolen is USPS mail.

If you wish to reduce exposure of personal information, do not directly pay bills at each payees site by credit card; have your bank do it. Set up the payments with them, they use direct electronic transfer when possible and send checks at no cost to you when not. Those payments contain the account number that the merchant has assigned to you and the bank's account number, not yours.

You can use online bank payment services just like writing checks. You can maintain a check register, enter the transaction number and amount assigned to each payment. If a paper check mailed by the bank does not clear within 10 business days, your bankl notifies you. You can print copies of transactions individually, or in groups. Most banks will still mail you a monthly paper statement unless you opt for email.

When necessary to pay at a website, use Paypal or a similar service, which will not reveal your credit card number to the merchant, or one of the credit cards with 0 liability for online fraud. When possible, using an aggregation site like Amazon, Alibaba or Walmart will let you buy from many merchants while sharing limted crdit card account information only with the aggregator.

Dog found in Jefferson Park near St. Constance Church (Menard & Strong). He's a very friendly, large black Lab - probably about 90-100 lbs. No collar / tags, but he's obviously missed by someone - he's a sweetheart & knows basic commands. Took him to the Jeff Park police station to scan him for a chip.

Great use of allegory in describing the vacant existance of 45th ward Alderman John "tiny hands" Arena.

Just to keep you up to date "tiny hands" has recently sought refuge by rolling himself up in a rug in Portage Park according to several reliable sources. His handlers have denyed this but did allow that "tiny hands" believed it to be some sort of magic carpet.

Efforts being made to address issues with students waiting at bus stop at Nagle-Northwest Hwy site

Update: Taft sends message to parents urging that students wait for bus on sidewalk instead of at the gas station. Also, the Number 86 bus can be boarded on Natoma outside of the school instead of at the Nagle-Northwest Hwy intersection. In the past some students have said that they prefer boarding the bus on Nagle because they can buy a snack at the gas station and that the buses on Natoma are too crowded. http://nadignewspapers.com/2017/10/31/concerns-raised-about-students-congregating-at-nagle-northwest-hwy-while-waiting-for-bus/

  • Hey Nadig Newspapers, wait until HH builds that car wash at Gunnison/Nagle. I wonder how the SB 86 Narragansett bus will pickup/drop off students at that NW corner there with cars going in/out during AM and PM rush hour times on school days.

Condo soundproofing

I need advice from condo dwellers who've attempted to soundproof their condo. How happy are you with the results? Most of my noise is coming from the upstairs neighbor. I can hear their every step, conversations, moving of furniture. It's driving me crazy! Thank you.

  • i agree completely that the traffic light timing needs to be evaluated and it'll help further, but it's also a fine line to tread.

the snags that i've experienced during rush hour recently are hardly any worse than those i experienced when i took the same route for 7 years prior to moving a mile and a half south on Central. I definitely feel that the increased traffic is being overstated. maybe we were at different periods of rush hour. YMMV apparently.

Last January, I responded to a request from the Alderman's office for volunteers to work on this year's capital improvement plan. This process is called Participatory Budgeting (PB). In my first meeting, some 20+ residents attended. Following orientation, we were charged with reaching out to the community for input on the capital needs of the Ward.

The PB volunteers organized the input into categories. Once organized, the community input tended to fall into four categories. To fully consider each category, the PB volunteers divided into 4 committees, one for each category. The task was to study each recommendation and vet them for appropriateness given City capital improvement guidelines and the cost of each recommendation. Determining cost was fairly easy as the City's capital funds can only be committed to approved vendors by the City and at the City agreed upon cost.

I served on the Beautification Committee. Our Committee had 37 recommended items to consider. By the September 15th deadline, we narrowed the list to a final four recommendations. I am rather pleased with the work our small Committee did. The final four recommendations were ours and ours alone.

As volunteers, if residents don't vote, our work was in vain. Thus, I encourage you to vote. The first vote you will cast is one determining the percent of the one million capital dollars to be spent on Streets. If you do not like any of the PB's sixteen recommendations you are free to vote for 100% of the budget to be devoted to Streets. Similarly, you are then asked to vote for up to six improvement projects. If you can't support more than a few of the projects, vote for a higher percent to be allocated to Streets and Alleys.

Independent of your political preferences, consider volunteering for next year's PB process. I enjoyed meeting with fellow Ward residents and found the experience illuminating in terms of community needs and how the City works.

Isn't a skimmer put it by placing a card in the machine? That would look like a regular transaction was taking place.

  • all these atms should have a camera right?

instead of issuing an alert to check the machine, maybe they should launch and investigation and have an alert for the suspects

where are the pictures of the suspects, with all those locations there should be something, right... like all walgreeen entrances have a camera. what about parking lot cameras, etc vehicle photos

Anyone with information should call police at 312-746-9661.
