Want to know more about this national holiday? Keep reading.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent
question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” Against what seemed like
impossible odds, Dr. King and scores of his fellow citizens of all races came
together and, ultimately, helped bend the moral arc of the universe toward
justice. In recognition of Dr. King’s incredible legacy of service to all, Congress
designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of
service in 1994, and charged the Corporation for National and Community
Service with leading this effort. Taking place each year on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a “day on, not a day off.” Today's commemoration of the MLK Day of Service on Monday, January 15 is an opportunity to remember that history. It is also a time to consider how much work still remains to fulfill Dr. King’s dream.

Anyone's Child Go to DePaul College Pre?

My brother went to Gordon Tech in the 1990s and loved the auto and wood shops among other things. It is now called DePaul College Prep. My son is in the 6th grade and we are starting to look at high schools. A couple of items on their website alarmed me. One is that it seems that with the change to DePaul CP, they also did away with all shop classes. While my son wants to go to college, I felt it important that he learn to work with his hands as well. It seems so many people go to college only to come out and struggle to find work. Yet I have a friend who is an electrician and he makes fantastic money, and has always been busy.

The other concern was, is DePaul CP a racist school? I see they have a Black Student Union, but none for whites! I do not want to send my son to a racist school since we are a family that is proud of what God made us (I am white, my wife is Hispanic) so we would not mind him joining a group of others that would share like minded ideas about their culture, as I am sure the Black Student Union does, but to have one and not the other worries me in that, this may be a school that teaches that some races deserve special treatment based solely on the color of their skin. Does anyone have experience with DePaul CP? Many thanks for advise. We have a couple of years, but time passes quickly!

No guilt whatsoever on my part.

Yes these are both true. My electrician friend says that another complaint he has is when his customers go on youtube, assume each job is just like it is on the internet and then question his price, yet are unable to turn a screwdriver on their own. He charges $185 per hour for his labor rate, and even with overhead, that is not a bad living.

Sewer back-up & basement drain flooding

We are experiencing a basement drain flooding and sewer back up for a couple of days now. A plumber came to rode the pipes and pumped the backed up dirty water, but they can't get their rodding snake to get to the street - something is blocking it.
We wonder if this might be caused by the recent street utility work - some pipes work and some Poeple's Gas work.

Is anyone else experiencing a similar problem? We are the condo building on Gunnison and Kenneth's corner.

  • good advice from John, I'd follow it

  • Chandra Lynn Dagley Pre-Medicine Chaser From AP

Dead of winter last year, I want to say. I am on Avers. All good suggestion above me, we had someone come out with a camera, and it was a multifocal problem, because the neighbor (small bungalow) also had issues. Drain tiles were indeed a problem., and they are right about where city problem ends and ours began and some issues within the building where the landlords replaced some old pipe.

Never ending car alarm

Hi folks,

I wanted to know if anyone has experienced a never ending car alarm somewhere on Lawrence between Oakley and Leavitt. Today, I was woken up at 7am by this alarm, it is now 9:30am and it’s still going on. Tuesday afternoon and night it seems the same car had the same issue. The alarm went on till 8pm from the mid afternoon. I called 311 which connected me to the police they said they would bring a car out this was a little before 8am but obviously nothing has happened. Does anyone have any suggestions what to do about this?

  • I called 311 once for a car going off all night. They said the only thing they could do was put a noise violation ticket on it. Which wouldn't help get it turned off obviously. Another time was a neighbor's car that beeped outside my window everytime a car drove...

I called 311 once for a car going off all night. They said the only thing they could do was put a noise violation ticket on it. Which wouldn't help get it turned off obviously. Another time was a neighbor's car that beeped outside my window everytime a car drove down the street. It was going off several times a minute round the clock. I was starting to go crazy after a week of this. I finally put a note on the car explaining the frequency. After the note disappeared so did the sound. I think non nasty notes are the most effective. Unfortunately I don't think you can do anything in the moment because I don't think cops will tow the car. Unless you know how to get into the car and turn it off like that other guy!

Google the battery location of the make and model of the offending car, and use a hammer to put a chisel or long screwdriver through it.

Parent-Child Class?

Just moved to this neighborhood. Want to check out a Montessori school for my 14 month old daughter. Three blocks from where we live, there is a school called Montessori Gifted Prep. We toured there, but they are full. Thinking about to trying their Parent-Child class on Jan. 25 Anyone want to join together?

Thank you all for the recommendations. I will definitely check out other options in the neighborhood, I won't go so far like O'hare unfortunately. I was just so amazed by how well children at Montessori Gifted Prep spoke both Spanish and Mandarin at this early age when I toured there.

97% of your donation goes to providing toys, books and other gifts to less fortunate children. 3% is spent on support - principally covering fundraising expenses. Not one donated dollar goes to pay for salaries or any other manpower costs.

Questions? Please contact me at jac.charlier@gmail.com or via Nextdoor or just around the neighborhood.

We’ve seen posts about similar thefts in the neighborhood during the last few days and we wanted to make folks aware of this incident as well. We’ve filed a police report with 311. Now on the hunt for a shop to get the catalytic converter replaced. Any recommendations are appreciated.

The Troops will be back.

Also, more than a few of you have reached out and asked what else can be done. Easiest and quickest is to make an online donation to our local young veterans via Chicago Veterans. Here's their webpage to donate and learn more: https://chicagovets.org Thank you!

That's it. Look well at the photos. They are of those who are headed into harms way for you and for me. They will all give some and some will give all.

Happened 40 minutes ago. I called the cops as soon as it happened. Cops out front of Summit Motel now with tape up. Not sure if there is a body.

From an NEIU Targeted Announcement email.

Late this morning, a Northeastern faculty member was the victim of a strong-arm robbery at Central Park and Admore Avenues, which is two blocks north of the Main Campus. The victim was approached by a male and female who suddenly pushed the victim to the ground and forcibly removed two of the victim's bags, which contained work and personal property. The two subjects fled on foot. Two unauthorized purchases were later made with the victim's credit card in neighboring Lincolnwood.

The two suspects were described by the victim as a female approximately 18 to 22 years old, 5 feet 4 inches tall with a thin build, braided hair and clothing that "shined or sparkled;" and a male approximately 18 to 22 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall and wearing a black hoodie. The victim described both suspects as African American.

An investigation is in the early stages and on-going. There is no other known immediate threat to the Northeastern Community right now. If you have any information regarding this incident, please contact University Police at 773-442-4100.

40s actress home?

I can't remember the name of the Hollywood actress who owned a single family home on California at 5000N. It is on the west side of the street. I think she quit acting and joined a convent?
