Found: Young gray cat with fluffy tail and white flea collar

Found a sweet gray cat with a fluffy tail. Young and small--very sweet and friendly and feeling lost. She's wearing a white flea collar. She followed my boyfriend home. He found her on Monticello (near Cullom).

(whew!!). We've put up flyers, and rung a bunch of doorbells, but it seems like he might have been on his own for some time. We thought he was very young, but he is a mature cat just very underweight.

He's safe with me for as long as he needs--maybe forever if we can (slowly) get him together with our two cats. He's so sweet. I'm taking him back to the vet for a full exam next weekend.

However, I'll leave this post up for a while in case someone is looking for him. Please let your neighbors know if you hear anything! Thank you.

Currently, our neighborhood is overcrowded with cars on the street that I sometimes have to circle for over 30 minutes just to squeeze in somewhere. It's quite frustrating at the end of a very long day.

I was wondering if anyone in Albany Park might be renting their parking spot or garage out. Both my sister and I would be looking for a spot. We currently live right by Ronan Park and North Park University. Anywhere close would be a Godsend.

I'm not very hopefully we'd be lucky enough to find something, but I thought I would put out the call.

Thank you all for your help!

Gently Used Medical Supplies - Where to Donate?

Hello, neighbors! I am currently recovering from surgery and had to purchase a few items to make life manageable that I'd like to donate or sell in December when I *hopefully* no longer need them. I will have the following, all gently used:

1 pair of crutches (for heights 5'2" - 5'10")
1 cam walker boot with air pump (size adult small)
1 mobility knee scooter
1 shower chair

I've heard that some physical therapy offices will take these and donate them to countries in need, but I'd also love to help local folks if possible. I've checked places like ALS association, Shriners, and other organizations that don't accept these items.

Does anyone know of a local nonprofit that can use these items? If not I still plan on asking my physical therapist if they can donate them.

Thanks!

Dog passed away in my alley

I was coming back from work and saw a dog who had passed away laying in the alley this morning between Monticello and central park, south of Leland . Looked like a terrier or beagle mix. Had nothing on me to move the dog. So i went home to get a blanket, went back and the dog was gone. Looked in the garbages and didn't see it. Anyone know any thing?

Cat Sitter Up Here?

Hi there...does anyone have any recommendations for a good pet/cat sitter in the Albany Park area?

  • Heather from Bow Wow Meow, or Marcia from Fur & Feathers. I found both through Yelp recently since I’ll be traveling for the holidays, and I love that they’re both in my neighborhood! Heather lives just down the street from me, actually! I feel like I found my local cat community, and that’s a good feeling. Marcia might have more availability than Heather... Or you could always check on Rover, they do cats too

  • Chicago Cowgrrrl proud Albany Park resident & Irving business owner

We started using Greer at Mamabear Pet Care a few years ago when we had elderly cats that needed regular medications.
    https://www.facebook.com/mamabeargreer/?timeline_context_item_type=intro_card_work&timeline_context_item_source=618259609&pnref=lhc
She was fantastic. Now that we have young cats, we've continued to use her because she's not only super knowledgeable and trustworthy, but she can relax when she's caring for our cats. She sends photos via text. She plays with the cats. She's a bit expensive if you have low maintenance cats, but if they need meds, she's your savior.

Loud "Boom" Last Night? Argyle and Central Park?

Did anyone hear a loud boom in the middle of night last night? I think it came from somewhere near Argyle and Central Park or perhaps further west. Thanks

Also sorry to say very loud music from car in same general area early this AM. Please call police about this kind of thing also. Anyone else hear this? Both very unusual.

  • Ellen K. From the far NW side and now back.

I heard a loud Boom but it wasn't a gunshot unless someone has a cannon. It startled me and then a lesser boom followed. It seemed like a car but I'd never heard that noise before.

AAFES to Open Online Shopping to Veterans
From an Army and Air Force Exchange Service News Release

DALLAS, Oct. 23, 2017 — With less than a month until the much-anticipated official launch of the veterans online shopping benefit, more than 225,000 honorably discharged veterans have already been verified to shop at online military exchange websites when the sites open to veterans Nov. 11.

The Army and Air Force Exchange Service online shopping benefit is the first military exchange benefits expansion in nearly 30 years. Beginning on Veterans Day, America’s 18.5 million veterans will be able to shop online at the military exchange websites: ShopMyExchange.com, shopcgx.com, mymcx.com, and mynavyexchange.com.

Shopping the military exchanges online provides veterans an opportunity to reconnect with their military community, allowing these soldiers, airmen, sailors, Marines and Coast Guard “members for life” to save money with tax-free shopping and military exclusive pricing while also supporting critical military quality-of-life programs.

Greetings My Neighbors,

Saturday, November 11 is Veterans' Day. On this very special US holiday, we celebrate all of our living veterans who have served or are serving in any branch of the military, active, reserve or National Guard, peacetime or wartime. We also take time to remember our POWs and MIAs in active hope of their imminent return to their loved ones and our nation's soil.

Everybody can take part in Veterans' Day activities. Here's how in four steps....

1) Thank a veteran. If you do not know a veteran, head out to one of the many Veterans' Day ceremonies as you will surely be able to thank a veteran there.

2) Support a veteran. You can make a monetary donation to a wide variety of veterans' organizations. A good local organization right here in the Northwest Area is Chicago Veterans. chicagovets.org. You can also Google for other agencies to support.

3) Remember a veteran. Because Veterans' Day is about those veterans still living, we read the names of our POWs and MIAs. You can do that by going to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency here: dpaa.mil. Once there, select "Our Missing" and choose the list by war/conflict and then the state. You can also search the list by name as well as select names by branch of service. Take a few minutes to read the names.

4) Join with veterans. There are numerous Veterans' Day ceremonies going on. Give it a search for one near you. All are welcome to attend the annual Edgebrook Community Association Veterans' Day Flag Ceremony on Saturday, November 11 at 4 PM at Kinzua, Hiawatha and Lehigh. For the first time, we'll be raising the POW/MIA flag over Edgebrook. Check social media and the ECA website for more information as it comes out.

That's it. I hope you are able to join in Veterans' Day 2017. Questions? Please ask...Jac Charlier at jac.charlier@gmail.com.

About a month ago, I left for work in the morning and noticed that at night someone (or something) had placed a large chocolate chip cookie on the front doorstep of our home --it seemed placed (not thrown) because it was actually touching the door. The front gate was not locked, so figured it was either left by a wandering drunk vagrant who had decided to take rest on our doorstep during his nighttime travels, or perhaps had been placed there by an animal (though that seemed unlikely, since no part of it had been eaten). Weirded me out enough that I took note of it, but other than that, pretty much forgot about it.

This morning I woke up to find a large loaf of unsliced bakery bread (a little smaller than a football) on our back porch steps. This really weirded me out, because our gate was locked this time, and our house is surrounded on all sides by a 6-foot fence. Was way too big to have been carried by a squirrel/cat, showed no signs of having been bitten, nibbled or clawed. Nor, given the way porch is situated, could it have been tossed there from street or alley. Which means, some time between midnight (when we got home and entered via the back) and 8:15 a.m. (when I noticed it), someone climbed our fence, placed this strange loaf of bread on our steps, and departed.

Obviously, that’s a little disconcerting. Tried googling, and found this reddit thread (http://www.reddit.com/r/needadvice/comments/2qm1kh/does_anyone_know_what_leaving_bread_by_someones/) by someone who had experienced a similar thing, but which provided no further explanation. Suppose next step is to install some hidden cameras, but was wondering if anyone in the neighborhood has experienced a similar thing or had ideas as to what this might be. Little freaked out right now, would appreciate any alternative explanations that don’t involve a person climbing our fence in the middle of the night to leave some weirdness on our steps.

  • I have seen a couple of times where all sorts of bread is by the parkway of a tree at 2 different locations. The bread is broken up loaves of bread. I don't know why someone would put a bunch of bread at the base of a tree. I cleaned it up so rats wouldn't come. Why is someone putting break or cupcakes outside for animals to get?

  • George F in Ravenswood displaced New Yorker

I think it's a misguided, but well intended gesture at feeding squirrels, and birds. Ever see a rat and a squirrel fight over a piece of bread? Not pretty.

RE: Our accreditation is reaffirmed by HLC

I am very happy to announce today that Northeastern Illinois University has earned a Reaffirmation of Accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). We will soon issue a press release about this.

Our entire University Community is to be commended for this collective achievement, recognizing our professionalism and dedication to the mission of Northeastern and our students.

HLC follows a stringent and exhaustive process to determine whether an institution of higher education receives accreditation or reaffirmation of accreditation. It is based on five criteria that include: mission, institutional effectiveness, teaching, and assessment of student learning. HLC, which accredits degree-granting post-secondary educational institutions in the North Central region, is scheduled to conduct its next reaffirmation of our accreditation in 2027-2028.

I especially want to thank the following people for the years of hard work and preparation that led to this successful outcome: Maureen Amos, Jennifer Banas, Katrina Bell-Jordan, Emily Booms, John Butler, Ruth (Breckie) Church, Shayne Cofer, Nont Dhiensiri, Craig Duetsch, Charles Funk, Marianne Hanna, Daniel Lopez, Blase Masini, Meagan Mitchell, Kristine Pierre, Asma Raouf, Victoria Roman-Lagunas, Kimberly Sanborn, Barbara Sherry, Dan Weber and Toula Wellbrook

I hope that today's news gives us the hope and optimism we will need to forge ahead and position ourselves for a bright future. All of this, of course, is in service to our students, who we hope will join us as we take pride in this accomplishment.

Looking to feed your taste for the fearful this Halloween? Visit the Stairway to Insanity haunted house, on the second floor of the St. Viator Recreation Center located at 3644 N. Kedvale Avenue, Chicago (on the corner of Kedvale & Waveland Avenues).

The haunt that the Horror Tourers gives a 4 1/2 chainsaw rating and calls "a value haunt" with "good scares" that they "definitely would go back [to] and definitely recommend."

As you ascend the stairs and falter through one of the most horrifying haunted house experiences within the city of Chicago, you will question your sanity and wish you had the power to unsee. Now in it’s 4th year, the Stairway to Insanity includes all new scares for 2017. Enter if you dare!

Don’t trek to the suburbs for Halloween haunts. The St. Viator Parish campus is easily accessible by the Addison bus and CTA Blue Line. Plentiful parking also available in lot adjacent to the Rec Center.

** This haunted house is not intended for younger children. Mature audiences only. **

WGNTV Reception Problems

In the past few weeks, I've been having a lot of trouble picking up WGNTV channel 9.1 on my TV in my dining room. It's the only channel that I can't pick up on the antenna now. It's been fine up until about a week ago. It was really spotty yesterday, and today i have nothing. I have even tried re-scanning channels and still nothing. Is anyone else having any problems?

In the past few weeks, I've been having a lot of trouble picking up WGNTV channel 9.1 on my TV in my dining room. It's the only channel that I can't pick up on the antenna now. It's been fine up until about a week ago. It was really spotty yesterday, and today i have nothing. I have even tried re-scanning channels and still nothing. Is anyone else having any problems?

I also have UVERSE in my livingroom, and of course that's fine but that's coming from a different feed, and I refuse to pay them for a second box, since normally, all the channels work fine.

Just wondering if anyone else is having any issues, or if something is going on with their broadcast.

Individuals Checking Car Doors - 4700 Block of N. Sawyer

Hi All - I know it goes without saying; however, I wanted to issue a friendly reminder to make sure your car doors are locked and nothing of value is left in plain sight.

My boyfriend caught three individuals looking into cars and checking door handles last night around 11:00pm on the 4700 block of North Sawyer. He yelled some not-so-polite things at the individuals, scaring them away from our block and he called the police; however, I don't know if there was ever any kind of apprehension.

Very odd encouter tonight around 8pm with two rather LARGE racoons acting like gansters(wish i was kidding). One climbed out of tree on the South side of farragut and went into someones front yard bushes so me and my dog crossed the street to avoid the thug(he did stare us down). Smart right, or so i thought. As im walking and watching the south side of street, i hear a scrambling of claws on bark directly in front and to the left of me and watched in horror as his bigger and badder partner in crime LANDED RIGHT IN FRONT OF MY DOG on the sidewalk. I sceamed(Im a soprano screamer so glass was breaking somewhere), yanked my dog hard back towards me and watched as this bandit hopped in the air in fear(i think my scream scared him off his plan to eat my dog) and he bolted across the street to meet up with his cohort. At that point i wasn't sure how many more there might be so i yelled my dogs name and said RUN!! We took off like lighting(well at a fast trot), but my dog kept checking behind us to be sure we weren't being followed.....in all seriousness....WATCH OUT. This really happened, and a smaller dog could have been seriously harmed. Please spread the word. DESCRIPTION: Grey body fur, black stripes, black mask around beedy eyes, fat, sharp claws, working in tandem, north and south sides of west farragut, 2100 block(alley going West to Levitt).

  • LP in Lincoln Square.....couldn't agree more!

  • There's a huge raccoon that often chills on the stoop of a building on Argyle and Bell. He's a scowler too. I have not seen him in several months.
