Any suggestions for recycling plastic ware from carry outs?

Somehow, we have ended up with dozens and dozens of pre-wrapped plastic cutlery sets, and a lot of individual ketchup packages. It's crazy! I don't want to contribute to the landfill problem we're facing, so I'm putting this out there. hoping for suggestions. We can mail them to where ever they can be put to use.

  • P

So which places will accept them?

  • Go Green North Center resident

I gather the plastic utensils up and put them in a container (also recycled). If they are clean and unused, list on freecycle. Also lots of school groups have picnics and gatherings near the beginning of the school year and would probably be glad to take them off your hands if you let them know you have them.

People who don't deserve pets.

A few minutes ago, your little dog ran out. You shouted at him to come back. And when he did, whatever you did TO him, made him squeal not once but twice. I yelled at you for it and I hope you heard it. And I'm not the only one who witnessed this.

Whose fault is it that the dog ran down the block out of YOUR control? What did you do to the dog that made him squeal in pain? You sir, are a jerk.

People walking dogs

keep your dog off my yard and out of my planting. If you want your dog to dig and tear up the outside do it in your yard. The outside is NOT a dog park. Walk your dog, pick up your poop and go home to wreck your yard. Show respect for the community. You do not have the “right” to be abusive and disrespectful to the community’s work to keep it looking nice because you can’t train fluffy. My yard is not open to your dog!

  • summerlife 19-Year Chicagoan GenXer

I get that you're frustrated. No, I dont have a dog. I have a happy cat. Why not just be grateful for having healthcare, owning a home, not having cancer or not being a farm animal. Lets say a lamb? You seem to have enough time on your hands, so why not plant a new flower and look at the big blue sky 🤗✌

  • You're assuming a lot,Summerlife. It's been my experience that when people get frustrated about relatively small things, it's because life has not been a bed of roses. The only thing on your list of things to be grateful for that we know to be true, is that Lin is not a farm animal. Just allow him/ her to vent a little. Everyone needs to once in a while.

Northbound on Troy assault

To the man walking Southbound on Troy at around 1am. You threatened my daughter after she came home from work. You said some lewd comments and made obscene gestures. My girl is a tough cookie, but you just threatened the wrong girl! You promised you'd 'be around' and that you'd 'see' her again. You'll see me for sure if you come near or threaten anyone, especially my daughter, again. I'm reporting you to the police as well.

Violence in Edgewater

Hey neighbors I just wanted to clue everyone in to what happened on Thursday night/ Friday morning on Kenmore Avenue between Foster and Berwyn. There was an attempted and fortunately unsuccessful drive by sometime between 9-11 pm on our block with multiple shots fired. The suspect who was a member of the Latin Kings was apprehended in the same location the following morning between 8-9 am as he returned to try to finish the job. He was armed at the time of the arrest. I wanted to post about it as a reminder to keep your head on a swivel and that we as neighbors have to look out for eachother.

  • You are absolutely correct !! Thanks for keeping everyone informed.

Moving Sale

I'm downsizing from a single-family home to an apartment and have a ton to sell. I tried the "letgo" app, that was a disaster. I couldn't participate in the Bowmanville Sidewalk Sale so now I'm reaching out on EveryBlock to see if anyone is interested in a ton of garden tools, chairs, hose/reel, etc. I also have a great Pro-Form treadmill, CycleOps wind trainer, queen futon and wood unfinished frame, shelving/cabinet, sofa table, etc. Text me if interested in finding out more and I'll be happy to share photos either here or in text. I may resort to a garage sale. 773-405-4210. I live in Bowmanville.

  • Catherine NO!

I like selling and buying stuff through Craigslist. They let you post lots of photos and keep your private info concealed.

I'd be interested in plant-related stuff, especially if you have actual plants. I don't have a yard, so I don't need things like shovels or hoses, unfortunately.

I'm also looking for a good recliner chair.

  • Catherine, my plants are outside in garden so likely not what you’re looking for and unfortunately, no recliner.

Moving within Edgewater area, CTA station question

Hi. Right now i have a studio close to Broadway and on Granville. I need a 1 bedroom and saw one on Granville but I'm looking for Aug 1st and they have to rent July 1st so it may be rented by the time i can move in. I saw another 1 bedroom on Bryn Mawr a little further from the Bryn Mawr CTA and half way towards Clark St.

How does the Bryn Mawr area compare to Granville? I will be traveling in the evenings. Also how do the neighborhoods compare?

I love the stores and accessibility around Granville!

Thanks!

  • Sandy in EdgeGlen EdgeGlen since 1987

Welcome to the neighborhood. Edgewater Glen is the best of both worlds: quiet, lovely & safe; but w/in easy walking distance of two grocery chains, restaurants, two bus lines and the CTA Red Line’s Granville station. Oh, and garden walks & block parties!

  • Thank you for all the information and positive comments! Looking forward to my move!

New to Edgewater and Chicago

Hi Neighbors,

I just moved here, was wondering if anyone had suggestions of good places/groups in the area to meet people. I work till around 7 in the evening and have to come home a walk the dog, so it limits my time span to meet new people.

  • If you mean the Edgewater Athetic Club,I love that place. Very unpretentious and relaxed. They also have a pool and it's never crowded. In fact, more than once I've had it all to myself. You may be talking about a different gym though. This one is on Kenmore just south of the campus.

  • Haaaa! I remember that lady in the 90s.

And 606, truth be told, I would only sit in one area in the Bleachers. The green concrete blocks along the fence when you walk up the stairs. I couldn’t stand being crammed in the actual bleachers with the masses.

My seats were heaven on earth. You had to climb up there to sit on em so that eliminated about 75% of ticketholders. Anyway, They turned those blocks into mini-gardens about 3 seasons ago. I was devastated. Haven’t been in the bleachers since, will never go back. So in reality, you are right. You can go at any age. I’m not that old so i don’t know why I picked that number. The only reason I’m down on the Bleachers is because they took my seats.

Lawsuit filed in Andersonville porch collapse

1600-1699 W. Balmoral Ave.

Lawsuit filed in Andersonville porch collapse
CHICAGO -- The first lawsuit has now been filed over a porch collapse last weekend. 20 people were on the porch in Andersonville when it gave way Sunday during a party. Three people suffered broken bones and contusions and they're suing the property owner. Lawyers say it appears the porch supports were rotted.

Just saw the video - that porch was not looking very strong.....not too solid - and attached to a 'frame' building - - what were those people thinking...?????? It was obviously not designed to hold a crowd. Just the size alone would be obvious to anyone that it was not a 'place for a PARTY'. If I had been there - I would of seen the danger in having so many people on that porch - and I would have 'shooooed' them down to the concrete and yard below....It is very nice of the owner to pay the medical bills.... I hate to say this - but I believe it was the host of the party that should have noticed that there were too many of his guests out on the porch - and reeled them in. In any case - I hope there are no lasting problems from the guests injuries...

Perhaps this publicized accident will help to alert others to be aware these things can happen anywhere - and not to 'push their luck'.

  • I have been on the very porch that collapsed and its large size does make it seem like it is able to hold a lot of people.

There are no set inspection schedules for porches in Chicago. The inspection that was done was probably by a private company the owner hired when he purchased the building, so nothing official or legally binding. That porch was attached to the building with nails and not lag bolts as is required via Chicago city code. Also the WGN story has been amended to correct that there actually has been no lawsuit filed as of the publication date. They merely spoke with a lawyer about what the legal ramifications might be.

    http://www.fox32chicago.com/news/local/warning-you-should-check-your-deck-after-two-recent-porch-collapses

  • If I was a landlord I would write into the lease the number of people allowed on a porch. Thinking back of that porch collapse in Lakeview years back that killed many .

  • Totally agree. Chicago city codes specify that number, so by including it in the lease it transfers at least SOME of the liability onto irresponsible tenants.

Water Usage Up over 50% in Andersonville

I know that our utility bills will continue to go up, but my water usage for my 3 flat went up over 50% for the months of January and February. I've spoken to 3 of my neighbors, all on Catalpa between Clark and Glenwood who have also experienced this huge increase in usage. None of us have leaks, some have boilers and some have central air, and we can't figure out why it says we used so much water.

I wrote Alderman Osterman's office and they said they would look into it. I remember there was a water main project in our neighborhood in January of 2018. Has anyone else seen this spike in their water bill?

  • Andrew Lehrer Edgewater resident since 2006

Our 6 flat on Victoria & Wayne experienced something similar - on Jan 1 of this year our usage double. No change in occupants, no meter work/upgrade, just doubled suddenly. We just had the city out and they cannot find any issues with our meter or any leaks in the building. No one in the building has a running toilet or any other suspicious water use. We are at a loss!

  • Thank you for all your responses! I contacted the Alderman, got the number for an actual person at the Chicago Finance/ Utility Department, and they said everything was legitimate. However, I just received a water bill that was $40 for this current period, over 100% less than the last bill.

    I think that is suspicious.

The building is on the police watch list and we have instructions to call 911 for any disturbances. Please be on the lookout for people hanging out in the parking lot or under the steps in the back of the building. They typically look pretty drugged out and sometimes are on bicycles or in cars and sometimes just on foot and almost "camping" out. They are always there to "see" an upstairs tenant. They knock on the back windows and wait until they are let in then leave after a few minutes. Use your imagination as to what might be happening. This is really disturbing and on Thursday, we could not get out of our door to get to our cars and leave work. Please call 911 if you ever witness any of these people hanging around. I've been told by the Caps Officer and the tactical team that the more calls they receive about this building, the better their chances to remedy the situation.Thanks.

I then got my phone camera and opened my door and snapped this shot of her. I think she is having a breakdown or just nothing better to do. I called the police to check up on her and she said she wanted to take pictures of inside of my house since she doesn't like my artwork. She said she used to work for Hugh Heffner and it is totally fine to take photos of me inside my house. She said she knows the law and has the right. There is definitely lead in the water in this building. Police wrote a report on her but they actually took time to look it up to see if it was legal or not since such a gray area. I do feel bad for police in situations like this but they handled it very nicely. They educated her on the law and made some peace and wrote an incident report so she knows not to do this anymore. It is NOT legal to take pictures of people inside their house without their permission. It is a violation of my right to a privacy. They even had an app to look up the law. Thank you CPD for resolving without escalating! I can tell police are trying and getting more training.

Yes. Pretty much anything can start with the Alderman's office, they will/should give you other instruction if it's something they don't handle.

  • Any construction work in the street after dark is pretty much due to an emergency and in those cases they don't need to wait until the daylight to start the work. You can complain to the alderman but won't go anywhere if the work was due to an emergency.

They may just be doing it late for that exact reason, so residents can have showers in the morning, flush toilets, etc. City living can be loud, fair warning is given from the get-go.

Lost cat

My cat accidentally got out of my apartment late Monday night and hasn't come back. I'm at Clark and Olive. My cat is full-grown, orange, striped, wearing a dark teal collar with a blue tag and answers to the name Mack. He is very friendly and sweet and polite. PLEASE contact me if you spot him.

  • Any update?

  • Thank you for checking. Thought I'd updated all these posts, but I missed this one. Mack came back; all is well. :)

Plumber Needed in Edgewater

Hi! I'm in the Granville Tower building and I'm looking for a plumber for a small job. I need the drain nipple replaced before I can install my new vanity. Of course, I need it done asap. I would appreciate any recommendations. Thanks, all!!

  • Lynn - your building might have special insurance requirements for a plumber (or other contractor) in order to protect other apartments (especially those below you). Please check in your office to see if this is the case. They should also be able to refer you to a plumber who already meets the requirements and knows your building.

  • Owen Wilson Sock it to me!

Blanton Plumbing will do a perfect job, but a little expensive
