Hi everyone! My husband and I are currently renting in Lakeview, but we've outgrown my one bedroom apartment, so we're looking to buy our first condo. We're in our early 30s and don't have any kids yet, but we're thinking about starting a family in the next few years. We've got our eye on a unit near Magnolia and Montrose, but I wanted to reach out to see if anyone on here would be willing to share any thoughts about living in the area. What do you guys like about it? What don't you like? Any thoughts on safety? As far as I can tell, the area around Magnolia and Montrose seems pretty safe, but I'm hoping to get some info from people who actually live nearby. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!

  • Marcus 60660 Park Edgewater Condo owner

You may have to spend a little extra, but I believe it is well worth it if you consider Edgewater. It is a much nicer area without so many of the problems found in Uptown.

  • crackedglass concerned citizen living at montrose and clarendon

Strongly consider renting first to see if your family can deal with the violence in the neighborhood. I was so naive when I moved into the neighborhood I thought there were a lot of firecrackers going off...3 neighbors have been mugged in the last year. IF you feel safe after a year here in uptown (especially on a block known for violent crimes) then buy.

Honking in alleys at sidewalks

Is this a strictly Chicago thing?? This is my first time living adjacent to an alley and it is SOOOOOOO obnoxious. Some cars honk 10 times as they approach the sidewalk and then still stop to see if anyone is coming (as they should), so the honking is basically pointless. What if someone who is hard of hearing is walking past, are you just going to keep going because you think a honk suffices at a pedestrian walkway? I hear people doing it at all hours, even as late as midnight in a clearly residential area. Anything that can be done about this short of me throwing eggs at every car who does it?

Andersonville Barbecue Spot Pork Shoppe Shutters After Two-Plus Years
Sad news for barbecue fans. After almost two and a half years in Andersonville, Pork Shoppe has unexpectedly closed. The restaurant's telephone is disconnected and there's a sign taped to the entrance reading "closed 4 good" - complete with a frowny face - at 5721 N. Clark Street.

I'm sure there's more to this story than we know. I find it really surprising the owners would give up the liquor license, which equates to a cash cow in that location; especially with all the new residents at the Lawrence House and those lingering around for concerts. It's unfortunate another package liquor store cannot take its place.

Please help: Looking for quiet/soundproof apartment

Hello,

I’m fairly new to the city and have had really bad luck with excessively noisy neighbors. I’m looking for a quiet apartment to rent for July 1.

I know it’s early for listings but I really need to find a soundproof or very quiet place to live (ideally with ENFORCED noise violation procedures included in every lease).

I know that sounds extreme but noisy neighbors have affected my quality of life and it’s my #1 priority in finding a new place. Any advice on location or building types or landlords would be much appreciated. Thank you!

  • John Ravenswood

I like that Joe managed to work in "I have a gun and will shoot someone" to a conversation about apartment noise.

I have a 2nd floor unit. I’ve lived in apartments for many years. This one is the noisiest. I can hear the downstairs tenant sneeze, cough, talk on the phone, close doors, laugh & yell. When he sneezes, it sounds like he’s standing next to me. I can hear the upstairs tenant walk, dance, exercise, talk on the phone and play music. I’ve had 3rd floor apartments & they can be quiet. However in today’s RE market, with the renovations of many of the older & better constructed buildings, you also need to ask about construction. Personally, I will never live again in anything built or converted to condos after 1999.

Re: Honking

This is a necessary evil in the city. Although honking more than twice is over kill.
I stop and honk because so many people do not watch where they are going.
I have experienced parents on a cell and letting the kids just run down the street!
Other people are texting and don"t even have the sense to watch where they are going.

  • Unless you've lived in Chicago, your entire life there would be no way to know that because it's not normal behavior anywhere else. Also this thread has shown even in Chicago it it's illegal.

  • It not illegal to honk your horn in Illinois and it's positively absurd to make that statement. Cars throughout Illinois are sold with horns I assure you if it was illegal they wouldn't be in the car. There is no thread anywhere that references honking in Illinois being a legal. In fact it is actually illegal to drive on an expressway or highway without a horn.

Apartment Forced entry

I was involved in an home invasion earlier this morning around 5:30AM. 3 Latino men dressed in winter gear from head to toe(and ski masks) was able to open my apartment door with keys or some other tool to let them in. They rushed in, grab me and threw me to the floor, ziptied my hands and feet, asked if there was cash, took that and phones then left.
Police and building management were called

  • I am still waiting to hear if other items were stolen and wondering why the phones were abandoned. And I know a lot of people who are up and/or up and out by 530.

  • 400 is the best time. Alarms start going off at 430. Lots of us workout early. After work we don’t want to do squat. We’ve got lives to live.
