I venture over there as I eat and visit friends in the neighborhood and the place is seriously dated, and there have been multiple times I have visited the store packed with customers and only two cashiers on shift. The lines are literally halfway down the store aisles. And that is once you are in the store. You have to go out into the Rob Me Dim barely light parking lot. The lighting reminds me of a Kmart parking lot, from like the 1980s. Lighting technology has changed so this lot should be light up like daylight at all times. It is seriously dark and a carjacking/mugging waiting to happen.

Mariano's on Sheridan/Foster has a small produce section with wilted, nearly-rotting organic stuff. Its hot bar has gotten several "fails" from inspectors, and its seating area is usually hogged by those seeking shelter from the weather--so those who actually want to sit & eat what they bought are out of luck. Its aisles have a very limited selection of brands compared to the ones in Ravenswood & Lincolnwood (something I've noticed in defrocked Dominick's compared to from-the-ground-up Mariano's). When I need mainstream brands WF doesn't carry (and need them faster than Peapod can deliver) I go to the Lincolnwood Mariano's, especially around Passover because of its huge kosher section. (Jewel at Howard/Kedzie has nearly as large a kosher section and is cleaner than other Jewels). When I want to shop w/in walking distance, get the freshest fish & grass-fed/pastured meats & eggs, or get certain things std. groceries don't have I walk to WF. If I can wait a day or two, I use Peapod. I don't like the lack of brand selection (and inability to take my cart to my car) at Aldi, nor the limited selection and inability to choose the size of my meat/cheese/produce purchases at TJ's. As for TI, their int'l selection has been eclipsed by Mariano's, Fresh Farms & Cermak Mkt on Ridge. They combine WF's high prices with some Jewel stores' declining quality control.

Water Main Progress

Does anyone have any inside info on NPL Construction's progress of the water main projects on the Northside? I can't find much in the media. I found some hits on DNA (RIP) and Sun Times about disgruntled aldermen in June/July, but there seems to be radio silence since then. The various ward (e.g., 47th/40th) sites list statuses of specific projects, but not much else.

Specifically, is this as big a debacle as it seems? Are the aldermen continuing to apply pressure to NPL? The long night is coming. What lies in store after the first major snowfall and subsequent first street plowing?

  • Good question. They tore up Wilson again this week. This time for fiber optic lines. While I appreciate all the upgrades, this needs to get done already. Our street has been a mess since April.

  • MKW in Lincoln Square 25 years in the Square

Between what's going on here along Leland, and now on Lawrence and along Lincoln AND around Amundsen where my kid goes to school, it's really unbelievable. I don't think all of these projects are the same (gas meter/sewer replacement/whatever) but you'd still think there would be some coordination to not inconvenience so many areas at once. And, now that winter is effectively here, I don't expect much more progress until spring :(

  • Citizen Pain Citizen Pain

I thought I was the only one who smelled a debacle. What a mess. It's as if our local leadership has been preoccupied with other things and hasn't noticed the post apocalyptic street-scape that never seems to improve; like a slow descent back into pre-civility.

Uptown EB has been hijacked by people with an axe to grind against me. That is unfair to the greater readership who may or may not care. Of those who care, who are fair, deserve some explanation.

Until it is resolved there is little I can say. But when it is resolved I will release on the Sheridan Park Neighbors Page and other media outlets every detail. I will share every tape, every transcript...everything.

You will see then and only then. I embarrassed the Alderman. Yes I did. An argument could be made that it wasn't me who embarrassed the Alderman (Cappleman of course) but the Alderman himself for attacking Starbucks. The absurdity has not been lost on many so it seems. Whose fault is that?

But tell that to James Cappleman, his husband Richard Thale, and his excitable "team", I was harrassed on the street.

All the facts will be shared, by me in due time, I promise. You will see then what happened. In the meantime trolls are going to troll, to spin, the more they spin the more vindicated I will be. I have a perfectly clean record for a reason, I am peaceful, I am the peace garden artist, your artist Uptown.

In the meantime I cannot apologize for the incessant trolling its beyond my control these are adults, if it bothers you just report it, its all that can be done. I have been bullied in Uptown before, I was a skinny kid it happened all the time, I have been attacked, stabbed, shot at, beat up, I can handle it.

I am proud to have started the petition, to have given the people a voice to show love and support for the employees of Starbucks, my friends, our neighbors. I am proud of the people of the Uptown, well most of them. Thank you for the messages of love and support.

All will be shared. With Love,

This is the culmination of 7 years of attorney fees and a waste of our taxpayer-funded court's time/resources, in my opinion, of course.

Broadway Bank space

It looks like something is moving into the Broadway Bank building. Does anyone know what’s happening there?

  • I think that event space that wanted to go in on Ridge Avenue and was turned away by the area residents is opening up shop there. I could be wrong but that's my guess.

  • If you look at the posts on their Facebook page (linked above), they seem to have been working on turning the bank building into an event space since the end of 2015 (nearly two years), so it is not likely related to the event space on Ridge.

I'm curious if/why Cappelman would ok a dollar store when he seems so bent on raising the financial profile of the area. Does he have anything to do with what businesses come in? He seems to take credit for the nicer ones but I've not heard if he takes credit for the less nicer ones. I used to live and Wilson and Sheridan, Unique (the previous version, not the one before it closed) was a boon to the neighborhood, it's hard to imagine a dollar store will be too.

There is no special use permits or zoning variances required so the Alderman has no say one way or the other whether it's a dollar store.

Thank you everyone for signing the petition, it made a huge difference not just to our friends who work at this location but all the way up to the top of the Starbucks corporate ladder.

The petition gave a voice to the true spirit of Uptown, the everyday people and it got noticed. 1300 people signed the petition and many left meaningful comments. About a dozen people showed up to Alderman Cappleman's bizarre event outside Starbucks to "demand action", left early, even stood up news crews. Attaching the Aldermans flyer for reverence.

I am proud of Uptown, love my neighbors, at the same time ashamed of Cappleman and his disconnection to large swaths of the community he was elected to serve not scapegoat.

Hi all,

My cat (the one in my profile photo) has been peeing on my low pile carpet and the staining is present on the reverse/bottom side. The carpet is 6ft by 5ft 9in. I'm not sure of the material, but I'm guessing synthetic. I'm a renter, but the carpet was bought by the previous tenant, so it's technically mine. I'd rather get the carpet professionally cleaned than have to buy a new one. I don't care if the color changes, I just need a way to protect the wood floors and get the odor removed. I've already tried cleaning it by hand, but given the heavy staining on the reverse/bottom size, I'm concerned it'll eventually disintegrate and maybe stain the wood flooring.

Can someone please recommend an inexpensive place to get my small low pile carpet professionally cleaned in Edgewater? Can I take it to a regular dry cleaner or no? This is my first time having to do this.

Thanks!

(My cat is medically fine. He's recently been to the vet.)

My initial post was over a year ago. I resolved the issue then.

In case someone else runs into the same problem, this is how I successfully dealt with it.

    1) My cat had recently been to the vet who said he was medically healthy.
    2) I got a spray bottle of "Nature's Miracle 3in1" and heavily sprayed the carpet, following the directions on the bottle.
    3) I got a very large clear thick painter's tarp and folded it up to fit the carpet. I then duct taped it to the underside of the carpet to prevent any moisture from going through the carpet.
    4) I moved my furniture around, so that the spot my cat was peeing in would be blocked, in case his scent was still there. The areas around the litterbox are now also blocked, so none of the wood floor is exposed. (The litterbox is wedged in a corner with an additional tray to catch kitty litter as he exits the litterbox.)
    5) I also created additional barriers to keep my dog from getting to the litter boxes around my apt. I'm guessing that my dog's litterbox intrusions are what caused the problems in the first place. As disgusting as it is, it's common for dogs to want to eat cat feces. One theory is that cats pass a lot of protein into their feces, and that's why dogs want to eat them. Dogs are scavengers. And yes, my dog regularly goes to the vet for his annual exam and shots and is medically healthy.

  • Get a pheremone spray. Our cat did this a few times on our door frame when he got a whiff of another cat next door. We sprayed this stuff on the doorframe called No Mark that I got at Pet Co next to Jewel and it works SO WELL. He is like an entirely different cat now. It relaxes them and takes away their urge to spray and go outside the box.

At the time of this posting approx. 670 of your neighbors have signed, read the comments made by actual patrons in their own name, in their own words.

Most of the employees of this Starbucks live in Uptown and are a solid part of our community, they need to be supported and shown love in the wake of a traumatic incident, not scapegoated. The petion will be delivered to the Alderman.

Thank You.

Yes it can be. It doesn't have to be 24/7. If it is you may be suffering some kind of chronic depression, you most likely know this.

Sorry to sound like a jerk, but if you left your car doors unlocked in the city at any hours for any length of time, you sort of deserve that. Think of it as a relatively inexpensive lesson. I love the city BUT there are some basic rules you NEED to follow:

-LOCK YOUR CAR DOORS. Your car will have items taken from it.

    - Do not leave valuables in your car where they are visible. Locked or not, it will be stolen. And to a scumbag lowlife thief, that pair of free headphones that came with your iPhone are valuables. They will cause $500 in damage to your car to break the window to get them.

-Do not sit idling in a car looking at your phone or napping. You will be carjacked or robbed.

-Do not walk alone at night. You will be robbed or mugged.

-Do not work in the garage at night with any door open or unlocked. Likelyhood of being robbed is high.

-Do not leave your house locked or windows open ever. Yes even on the second floor I close and lock my windows. This is not paranoia it is reality in the city..

    -Conceal and carry.

  • I'll add two more: when you're gassing up, lock the car so that while you're using the pump and hose, some thief can't jump into your car and drive it away. I've been doing this for a long time and just last week, this type of car theft happened to...

I'll add two more: when you're gassing up, lock the car so that while you're using the pump and hose, some thief can't jump into your car and drive it away. I've been doing this for a long time and just last week, this type of car theft happened to a fellow at a gas station. It was on the broadcast news. And, stop living in your phones as you walk. A fast phone snatch is sooo easy.

I do differ from conceal and carry; I don't want to own firearms. I grew up with parents who owned guns and taught my sister and me how to use them (22, 38, Luger, air rifle). However, about two years ago, three teenaged punks approached me quickly. My hands were in my pockets and I pressed one hand against the outer pocket (to make a bulge) and said, "do you really want to find out that I have a concealed carry license?" They turned and ran...phew! So...everyone, be safe and not so trusting.

Jeffrey Littleton Arrested

This man was arrested for committing battery against a senior citizen engaging in positive loitering on November 3rd. Court date is set for Dec. 15. Stay tuned for more details. Residents concerned about public safety are encouraged to attend this hearing.

  • Mamma Mia, This Thread is like one big old you're going to go have to do some community service or jail or something worse thread. Christ he's not even smart enough to shut the hell up before his hearing is he? I suppose I should be thankful because anything he says or does online that can be shown to a judge only works against him. Lithium much?

Seeking parking space

Hello neighbors, does anyone know how I can find out about parking spaces available for rent in the Margare Terrace section of Uptown? I live on Carmen and it's particularly hard to find street parking. I would be willing to pay someone to rent their spot.

  • Typo....meant Margate Terrace

  • Jeffrey Littleton 3rd Generation Uptown

I believe the surface lot just west of Sheridan on Southside of Foster leases parking. It's close, but not technically Margate Park.
