Indoor Basketball?

Anyone have any leads on access to an indoor basketball court in Edgewater or Rogers Park? I tried the Broadway Armory, but access is limited to Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30pm-9pm...even as a member of the park. Having a membership to a public park paid for with our tax dollars is already a questionable practice...let alone the public not having access to a public park. I went in there hoping to have a morning shoot around. Totally empty, yet I wasn't allowed to shoot around. Anyway, I don't mean for this be a rant...just kinda rubbed me the wrong way. Just looking for some indoor basketball recommendations!

Thanks!

  • I'd be interested in local options, too.

You should check with Chicago public & private schools which are probably always looking for a few more bucks. Most of my open court time was on weeknights and Saturday mornings at elementary and middle schools (in Wis.). Someone would rent a couple hours of time weekly and everyone would pitch in with $3-$5 or whatever the fair share was. With a core group of friends & workmates, along with social media, I'd think it would be easy to sustain that these days. I found it much more fun than playing with total strangers or in a competitive league setting.

The only daytime options seemed to be a YMCA or a larger health club. I had a trial week at the XSport Fitness on Touhy in Skokie last month. One evening I saw their tiny court had at least 30 guys trying to shoot around before a game broke out while the chaos continued. Not good, not safe, not fun.

BEWARE!! Coyote sighting ON 1.17.2018

I witnessed a coyote walk east on the south side of Hollywood, cross the street to the north side, and walk the sidewalk West towards Clark.. 911 was called.

saw one on a mission heading west on Balmoral across Clark St. I was walking my 10lb dog and the coyote didn't even give us a nod - which was fine with me. I hope they feast on the rats - and considering the bunny overpopulation occurring west of Ashland - bon appetite!

  • Wait... isn't CPS having trouble finding enough money to fulfill their primary objective of providing a good education for the children in the district?

Now they are paying people's rent too?

CPS needs to stick to their primary tax payer funded mission and let the other community resources do what THEY do best. Wonder how much CPS is diverting in benefits and salaries to administer this housing program that overlaps with other city and state programs?

  • The money for the program comes from the City of Chicago Housing Trust Fund. CPS is just identifying families that are homeless but still managing to send their kids to school.

If thieves are doing that to determine if folks are home, not sure if that’s the smartest plan. We have garages, so while one car may have to park on the street most people around have a couple cars and one will always be on the street and one in a garage or parking space for the building. There have also been times when we’ve had to park a block or two away, so unless they’re continually doing a sweep it’s hard to be certain that folks aren’t home.

Two Chicago aldermen want to limit release of condo owners' personal information
Two Chicago aldermen who represent most of downtown want to reverse a state law that makes condo owners' personal information more widely available to their fellow association members. A proposal introduced this week by Aldermen Brian Hopkins and Brendan Reilly would allow association boards to limit the release of owners' names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and weighted votes in Chicago condo buildings and complexes.
    http://www.chicagotribune.com
  • Wazzup not available

being able to contact neighbors in an emergency - like flooding from above - is important. Not every condo has a manager on site - and not every condo has a contact person at night. This ordinance is important and will be appreciated when an emergency arises. There could be an exception for those condos with 24 hour on site contact -like manager or doorman.

  • Some smaller condo associations automatically distribute a list of telephone numbers to all residents for that purpose. This is different and was supposedly quietly stuck into another proposed Condominium Act change. I understand that several state senators and representatives are already starting to work on repealing that one part of the change.

If you're a regular Streetsblog Chicago reader you may be aware that I'm a fan of the nearly completed Wilson 'L' station reconstruction in Uptown. The project includes transforming the stop into a Red-Purple transfer, adding wheelchair accessibility, new station entrances, the restoration of the 1923 Gerber building, and cool public art by Cecil Balmond.

Any News on New Andersonville Restaurants?

Anyone have updates/insight on when our new Andersonville restaurants are opening?
Hutch opened pretty quickly and we've already had a tasty dinner there!

Eagerly awating:
Octavio (old Acre/Ombra)
Furious Spoon (old Johnny Brown Bag)
Greek Place (old Sunshine Cafe)
Bakery (old Goddess and Baker)

And any news on possibilities for the spaces that were Brixton (I miss their steak tartare and chicken pate!) and Adriatica?

Snowy City Night

The falling snow and the new lighting on the Gerber Building and the Wilson L station combined to make Wilson and Broadway a dramatic scene Sunday evening.

Many a warm summer night was spent there with a burger and a beer...or two..or three...

One of the reasons Moody's beer garden became so popular was that it was all-ages: you could bring the family and eat outside. Also, the bar indoors was very dark--and, before anti-smoking ordinances were enacted--smoky as hell. So the outdoors became a refuge from smokers too--people still smoked outside, but they could wave the smoke away. (And you & they could see each other and move to a different table).

I never knew any other Moody's but the one on B'way. I know it's not the end of an era, but it's always sad when a person who established something beloved passes away. May his memory be for a blessing,

Do You Have The Time?

Gerber Building status as of Sunday, January 14

    Do You Have The Time?
For the first time in over 60 years, if someone asks you for the time at Broadway and Wilson, you don't have to look at your wrist or smartphone. You can simply gaze upon the Gerber Building because the clock is back.

Loud Long Horn around Bryn Mawr and Clark 7 a.m. this morning?

around 7 a.m. a super loud long horn went off twice. It sounded like it was in my head it was so loud. So Loud I thought maybe my car in the garage was losing its mind so I went down to check.

I could not figure out the source. Anyone have a clue?

  • There was a Trash truck laying the horn on for some reason. I drove past the truck and was as confused as you are.

Moving to Edgewater

Hi! My wife and I are looking to buy our first condo, and we we're wondering what the general opinion is of Ardmore between Ridge and Clark and if there is anything we should be aware of. Thanks!

Depends on what part of Edgewater. East of B'way, parking is difficult because of so many apt. bldgs with so few garage spaces. West has more single-family homes and 2-flats with garages, so on-street parking's easier to find. I live less than 1/4 mi. from a Red Line station, and it has almost never taken me more than 45 minutes, even in rush hour, to get as far south as Jackson St. (Track problems & the like can happen on any line). Ubers & Lyfts are plentiful; and many of the city's taxi drivers live here--easy to flag down a cab on B'way.

I grew up in NYC, and to get from Queens to Brooklyn on the subway, you had to go through Manhattan. (My husband's commute to college--no dorms at CUNY schools--was 2.5 hrs. each way every day). The NYC subway system is deteriorating due to budget cuts. I lived in Seattle, and drove to law school in south Tacoma-->1 hr. each way). Be glad you don't live in DuPage or Kane County and commute into the Loop. And don't even ask about Los Angeles or the Miami-W. Palm I-95 corridor.

We Chicagoans don't realize how lucky we are when it comes to commuting from a residential 'hood to downtown.
