Copper Cornice Comeback

Newly constructed copper cornice meets the 109 year old cornice

    Copper Cornice Comeback
The Stewart School Lofts are nearing completion as new residents move into the unique floorplans to enjoy amenities like a gorgeous rooftop deck with beautiful views of the city. Outside, Morningside Development has been hard at work with tuckpointing, installing a new roof and repairing the copper cornice that was sagging in sections and in danger of falling completely off.

looking for monthly parking rental

I live near Swift Elementary, and I'm looking for a monthly, long-term rental parking spot. I've already checked out the usual websites (spothero, parqex, craigslist, etc.). Any information about available spots would be greatly appreciated.

Where are the yard sales?

Hi there Uptown just wondering is your neighborhood having yard or community sales? Esp. looking for Condo sales.

  • Check online for block clubs in the area, then check their activities. Margate Park's is actually the Carmen Winona Block Club and it used to be in June. Selling takes place along Winona and Carmen. There's a fee to participate. Send an email to carmenwinonabc@gmail.com to inquire.

  • Jeffrey Littleton If you can't be a poet, be the poem.

The sale I was thinking of is between Sheridan and Marine Drive. A lot of quirky sale items.

Violence in Edgewater

Hey neighbors I just wanted to clue everyone in to what happened on Thursday night/ Friday morning on Kenmore Avenue between Foster and Berwyn. There was an attempted and fortunately unsuccessful drive by sometime between 9-11 pm on our block with multiple shots fired. The suspect who was a member of the Latin Kings was apprehended in the same location the following morning between 8-9 am as he returned to try to finish the job. He was armed at the time of the arrest. I wanted to post about it as a reminder to keep your head on a swivel and that we as neighbors have to look out for eachother.

  • You are absolutely correct !! Thanks for keeping everyone informed.

Moving within Edgewater area, CTA station question

Hi. Right now i have a studio close to Broadway and on Granville. I need a 1 bedroom and saw one on Granville but I'm looking for Aug 1st and they have to rent July 1st so it may be rented by the time i can move in. I saw another 1 bedroom on Bryn Mawr a little further from the Bryn Mawr CTA and half way towards Clark St.

How does the Bryn Mawr area compare to Granville? I will be traveling in the evenings. Also how do the neighborhoods compare?

I love the stores and accessibility around Granville!

Thanks!

  • Sandy in EdgeGlen EdgeGlen since 1987

Welcome to the neighborhood. Edgewater Glen is the best of both worlds: quiet, lovely & safe; but w/in easy walking distance of two grocery chains, restaurants, two bus lines and the CTA Red Line’s Granville station. Oh, and garden walks & block parties!

  • Thank you for all the information and positive comments! Looking forward to my move!

New to Edgewater and Chicago

Hi Neighbors,

I just moved here, was wondering if anyone had suggestions of good places/groups in the area to meet people. I work till around 7 in the evening and have to come home a walk the dog, so it limits my time span to meet new people.

  • If you mean the Edgewater Athetic Club,I love that place. Very unpretentious and relaxed. They also have a pool and it's never crowded. In fact, more than once I've had it all to myself. You may be talking about a different gym though. This one is on Kenmore just south of the campus.

  • Haaaa! I remember that lady in the 90s.

And 606, truth be told, I would only sit in one area in the Bleachers. The green concrete blocks along the fence when you walk up the stairs. I couldn’t stand being crammed in the actual bleachers with the masses.

My seats were heaven on earth. You had to climb up there to sit on em so that eliminated about 75% of ticketholders. Anyway, They turned those blocks into mini-gardens about 3 seasons ago. I was devastated. Haven’t been in the bleachers since, will never go back. So in reality, you are right. You can go at any age. I’m not that old so i don’t know why I picked that number. The only reason I’m down on the Bleachers is because they took my seats.

There are no set inspection schedules for porches in Chicago. The inspection that was done was probably by a private company the owner hired when he purchased the building, so nothing official or legally binding. That porch was attached to the building with nails and not lag bolts as is required via Chicago city code. Also the WGN story has been amended to correct that there actually has been no lawsuit filed as of the publication date. They merely spoke with a lawyer about what the legal ramifications might be.

    http://www.fox32chicago.com/news/local/warning-you-should-check-your-deck-after-two-recent-porch-collapses

  • If I was a landlord I would write into the lease the number of people allowed on a porch. Thinking back of that porch collapse in Lakeview years back that killed many .

  • Totally agree. Chicago city codes specify that number, so by including it in the lease it transfers at least SOME of the liability onto irresponsible tenants.

These benches are intended for the parkway or other public spaces to encourage walking and offer people a place to rest as they go around the neighborhood.

I’ve complained. Also I saw breakstone cottage cheese that was 2 months old still in the coolers. Other Mariano’s are nice...not this one.

I made a mental note to report it to the health department but it looks like someone beat me to it. I still think this place is leagues better than Dominick's, but it has really gone downhill since they were taken over by Kroger a couple of years ago. From what I understand, the same fate befell Dominick's when it was taken over by Safeway.

Water Usage Up over 50% in Andersonville

I know that our utility bills will continue to go up, but my water usage for my 3 flat went up over 50% for the months of January and February. I've spoken to 3 of my neighbors, all on Catalpa between Clark and Glenwood who have also experienced this huge increase in usage. None of us have leaks, some have boilers and some have central air, and we can't figure out why it says we used so much water.

I wrote Alderman Osterman's office and they said they would look into it. I remember there was a water main project in our neighborhood in January of 2018. Has anyone else seen this spike in their water bill?

  • Andrew Lehrer Edgewater resident since 2006

Our 6 flat on Victoria & Wayne experienced something similar - on Jan 1 of this year our usage double. No change in occupants, no meter work/upgrade, just doubled suddenly. We just had the city out and they cannot find any issues with our meter or any leaks in the building. No one in the building has a running toilet or any other suspicious water use. We are at a loss!

  • Thank you for all your responses! I contacted the Alderman, got the number for an actual person at the Chicago Finance/ Utility Department, and they said everything was legitimate. However, I just received a water bill that was $40 for this current period, over 100% less than the last bill.

    I think that is suspicious.

We are in the office building at 6228 N Broadway and have been experiencing disturbing activity in the back of our building for months. The building is on the police watch list and we have instructions to call 911 for any disturbances. Please be on the lookout for people hanging out in the parking lot or under the steps in the back of the building. They typically look pretty drugged out and sometimes are on bicycles or in cars and sometimes just on foot and almost "camping" out. They are always there to "see" an upstairs tenant. They knock on the back windows and wait until they are let in then leave after a few minutes. Use your imagination as to what might be happening. This is really disturbing and on Thursday, we could not get out of our door to get to our cars and leave work. Please call 911 if you ever witness any of these people hanging around. I've been told by the Caps Officer and the tactical team that the more calls they receive about this building, the better their chances to remedy the situation.Thanks.

"You've heard the big news that Chicago Market has signed a lease for the Gerber Building at the Wilson 'L' station, right? It's true. But how do we go from this beautiful empty space to a bustling grocery store?

Annual Literary Festival at Printer's Row.

This weekend the Chicago Tribune hosts the annual Literary Festival at Printer's Row, with author interviews at Jones College Prep in the auditorium. One of the authors speaking will be Erik Beckman. His recent book "Us Against You" offers a quote that is (I believe) pertinent to so much nowadays. "He learns that people will always choose a simple lie over a complicated truth because the lie has one unbeatable advantage....the truth always has to stick to what actually happened, whereas the lie just has to be easy to believe." I'll be at his event.

Go to the Lit Fest. It's worth the visit (Sat. and Sun. 10 AM - 6 PM). See: https://printersrowlitfest.org/
