Shooting on Lavergne - Neighborhood Watch

We heard 3 gunshots the other night Lavergne and Patterson and there was NOTHING in the news. The only place we saw it was on our ring video doorbell network. You can download the app and get neighborhood notifications (you don't have to have the doorbell) and see video footage from your neighbors. It's a good way to know what's happening close to you.

Some of the neighbors have found this helpful, and wanted to pass it on.

Anyone know where I could find or special order unicorn donuts?

Hey Everyone,

I’m looking to order unicorn donuts for an upcoming party but haven’t been able to track any down. Anyone know of a place that makes them or would accept special orders for such an item? Does not need to be in the Portage Park area directly.

I’ve attached a photo for reference of what I’m looking for.

Thanks in advance!

Koch Foods?

Hi everyone,
I'm interested in the area, but I noticed there's a large chicken processing plant nearby. It seems like this could be quite a nuisance and I had some questions for the neighborhood. Is the facility noisy at odd hours? Do they actually slaughter chickens there, or is it just processing? I'm worried about seeing or hearing truckloads of live birds. I'm out and about very early in the morning.

  • Can anyone speak to the smell during the summer? We are considering purchasing in the Terraces and wondering if the smell is still an issue. Since it’s winter and cold outside we haven’t been able to notice any smells, but am worried that changes in the summer! Thank you!

  • I never had an issue with smell there, lived nearby and drove by a lot. As the alderman said, they don’t have live chickens there. You can sometimes smell the commerical bakery on Kolmar which is nice!

affordable snow removal service/person?

hello neighbors!
We are a new business at the corner of Avondale and Pulaski and we are looking for a more affordable option for our snow removal. We're interested in a professional service for heavier snow falls (over one inch) and/or a local person who could just (perhaps with a snowblower?) take care of our sidewalks during light snowfalls. We've gotten lucky so far this year but there is still (purportedly) a lot of winter days left!

Now, more than ever, we need a new high school at the Read Dunning site. Bridge, Canty, Dever and Smyser are anchoring this part of the NW Side and are a large part of Dunning making this list. Give these parents a reason to stay in Dunning, give them a new modern high school, it's long overdue. The land at Irving and Oak Park is plentiful and has been sitting idle for decades. This should be an easy decision.

I was surprised by the Wrigleyville and Andersonville median prices, they seemed low. Anyone who lives on the North Side knows those areas are more expensive. Those areas are saturated with condos. It depends on how they get their samplings for the median home prices. My experience with Redfin is that their home estimator is usually higher than Zillow or Realtor.com. Keep in mind that the median prices include homes that flippers buy which are of course lower than other sold, turn-key properties.

Just a heads up. I had an attempted theft of my catalytic converter over the weekend. I live on the 3900 block of Kedvale, and drive a 2012 Jeep Liberty. My car was parked right out in front of my building on the same block. I am not sure if it happened overnight Saturday to Sunday (Jan 6th o Jan 7th) or Sunday to Monday (Jan 7th to Jan 8th) as I did not drive my car on Sunday. Monday morning however when I left for work the car sounded like truck, and was extremely loud when accelerating. I took it to Iggy's Muffler shop on Montrose and Harlem and was told that someone had cut through the front, and was half way through the back with they either gave up, or got spooked and left. Iggy's did great work and only charged me $50 to weld everything back together.

Not sure there is any way to prevent this from happening in the future, other than parking in well lit areas and everyone keeping a watchful eye. Unfortunately I do not have garage access which would be the best option.

Giving credit or blame to a president for the state of the economy after one year is not right.

If Trump's administration is able to sustain key economic factors (DJIA is not one of them) than we can begin to give him credit. But, until next year's State of the Union, we will have to see. The DJIA is an economic factor mainly for the upper crust including CEO's of the companies measured via the DJIA. I understand that retirement plans are effected by the DJIA, but that, like the economy is cyclical and factored into your lifetime average including the lean years when you shift your money largely to interest bearing investments.A select few are lucky enough or knowledgeable enough to play the market perfectly. (aka insiders and CEO's)

Job creation, median income numbers, unemployment rates and interest rates are what effect the commoners like you and me not the DJIA. Giving Obama credit for that yesterday or to Trump today is a red herring.

Now I will say that, in comparing economic numbers during the Reagan years and the Obama years, the recovery was considerably more sluggish under Obama. Both men inherited a catastrophic economy. While the economy has its own engine, the president's policies can assist in the trend (up or down). The economy has and always will run in cycles.

Cat lady from.....

Hello neighbors! We have a crazy cat lady on our street. She has at least 10 cats that roam freely. They are a problem. They spray, they get in my garage, they poop in everyone's lawn. I can't open my front door without one trying to run in. I know there are leash laws for dogs but what about cats. I am not the only neighbor upset by all the cats. I've tried talking to the cat lady but she does not care. Will the city come out if I call with a complaint?

Alley Cat Allies is a reputable organization that has been around for quite some time. Perhaps they are referring to the TNR cats as having a lifespan of 7 years. Surely they know that a strictly indoor pet cat receiving proper nutrition, veterinary care, etc., can and often does live almost 3 times that long. One of my cats was 19 years and 9 months old with medical issues that were well maintained over a long period of time. A friend had a kitty that was 26 years old. So, yes, cats can live very nicely well into a ripe old age!

I've always been reluctant to bring her inside because I believe she's someone's cat. (Well fed, well groomed, when it's cold or wet she doesn't show up etc.)

She stopped coming around right after the time that the trapper was catching cats so I figured her owners were keeping her indoors (good.) She's now returned, but looking a bit skinny--she was always very plump. It's odd for cats to lose weight that quickly unless there is a health problem--I tried to feed her, but she's not really interested.

I'm thinking about bringing her inside and possibly to the vet. But before I do that, I wanted to see if anyone knows if she's got an owner in the neighborhood. I tried to put a break-away collar on her that asked for her owner to call me, but she's not having any of that. I have not yet had her checked for a microchip and she is not ear-tipped.

Neighbor got robbed at gun point in alley.

A male African American robbed one of the neighbors at gun point by Addison and Long on Friday, December 15th around 7:30pm as he was in his garage. I saw the suspect running from the alley in all black crossing Addison going southbound and reported it to the police. The male was about 6ft tall, skinny build, really dark skinned, and in his early 20's. Not sure if the suspect was with others or alone.

Neighbors in the area have said there has been a string of attacks. Please be aware of your surroundings.

BTW, most Catholic churches will have Midnight Mass tonight, but some do it earlier now because of the kiddies, like begin at 9pm or 10pm. They don't call it Midnight Mass then, just the Christmas vigil, but it is the Christmas mass.

Most Catholic churches in the archdiocese have web sites and the Mass schedule for Christmas will be posted there, so you can look it up. Also the schedule for Christmas day.

We would love to see you there. And don't worry, there won't be an earthquake and the ceiling collapse if you haven't been there in ages and you cross the threshold. :-) God will be happy to see you there whatever your status with Him.

    Merry Christmas.

Christmas ideas

so I was sitting here thinking of what I would want for Christmas, but probably would not get and was thinking of what may be on other peoples Christmas list.

then I thought, this may be a great way to share ideas of what others may want, but don't know items exist or may give others gift ideas they may not have thought of.

I took the liberty of listing items of various prices, but you can list anything you may want to receive as a gift, also feel free to share gift ideas of what you have bought others that you feel are exceptional.

price should not matter in your listing, but try to list 3 realistic items (not like 3 Lamborghini's) and add a link for easy sharing.

merry Christmas

Do you know this cat?

We've seen this kitty around the backyard for a few days. Near Berenice and Laramie. Looks well cared for, but is very skittish. I've not been able to get very close. It's about to get VERY cold. Please let us know if this is your cat or you recognize it. Thank you!

  • This cat might also be part of a managed feral cat colony. Try to notice if it's left ear is tipped (the tip will be missing so it's flat across). It can be hard to tell from a distance, though.

  • You can also post this cat on Facebook--Chicago Northside Lost and Found Pets.

looking for a tuckpointer

I've been looking for someone to do some basic tuckpointing (install a new window sill, maybe expand/brick over a window or two) for the last month or two now and I cannot seem to get anyone to answer their phone or come do the work. I should have asked on here earlier, but does anyone have a tuckpointer that they recommend? Or even a window company that they could recommend as they maybe able to do the work as well since the windows need replaced.

  • Sol is right, and getting very cold next week. Temps should be 40F+ a the bare minimum, even overnight. Wait til spring

  • Thanks ABC and everyone else. I was hoping to get the little work done this week while it was warmer and push the rest of the work back. The one person I did get ahold of bailed on me last minute though so it'll wait till the next warm patch now. ABC if you want to send me referrals I'd take them. I've got a lot of work (new lentils, attic vents, etc) that I'll need in the next year on top of this silly window sill.
