Old Irving: Safe?

Hi,

I'm considering moving to Old Irving Park, and am wondering about safety. Do you feel safe walking around the neighborhood in the evening? Also, I saw on the Chicago Tribune homicide tracker that there have been 3 murders to date in the area, and only 6 total last year. Seems like crime is becoming more of a problem.

Specifically, I'm curious about the area south of Irving, north of Addison, and west of the freeway to Kilbourn.

Thanks in advance for your input.

  • My Daughter and SIL live in old Irving and are very happy there although the school is a lottery they have there kids at St Viator’s. My SIL is a realator.... if interested message me. This is there 2nd home in OI, it took the better part of a year to find it. Good Luck!

AAFES to Open Online Shopping to Veterans
From an Army and Air Force Exchange Service News Release

DALLAS, Oct. 23, 2017 — With less than a month until the much-anticipated official launch of the veterans online shopping benefit, more than 225,000 honorably discharged veterans have already been verified to shop at online military exchange websites when the sites open to veterans Nov. 11.

The Army and Air Force Exchange Service online shopping benefit is the first military exchange benefits expansion in nearly 30 years. Beginning on Veterans Day, America’s 18.5 million veterans will be able to shop online at the military exchange websites: ShopMyExchange.com, shopcgx.com, mymcx.com, and mynavyexchange.com.

Shopping the military exchanges online provides veterans an opportunity to reconnect with their military community, allowing these soldiers, airmen, sailors, Marines and Coast Guard “members for life” to save money with tax-free shopping and military exclusive pricing while also supporting critical military quality-of-life programs.

Knox Studio Water Tower - what's up?

Anyone know what's happening with the water tower that looms over Knox Studios? I noticed they have a crane above it and workers on top. I hope they're just doing some repairs - I'd really hate to see them take it down. It's sort of a landmark and has an "urban decay" look going - I'd miss it if it's gone.

  • They’re taking it down. Wasn’t structurally safe anymore

  • Yeah, I spoke to them as it was coming down. Apparently the City was making them do improvements and it was going to run more to fix it vs. just take it down.

What's interesting was that Knox wanted to fix it up a few years back and "brand" it as part of their studio and they were told they couldn't because it was a Historical Landmark - yet they could just tear it down????

I know not related, but to me this was a cool structure that's been there since 1919, almost 100 years - just gone. We also just had to tear down the Bank building at 6 Corners and now have a lovely hole that just sits there - and this is progress?

Presidential Proclamation Honoring the Victims of the Sutherland Springs, Texas Shooting

A PROCLAMATION

We are deeply saddened by the shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas, which took the lives of more than 25 innocent victims while they were attending church. As we mourn the victims of this unprovoked act of violence, we pray for healing and comfort for all the family members and loved ones who are grieving.

As a mark of respect for the victims of this senseless act of violence perpetrated on November 5, 2017, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, November 9, 2017. I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same length of time at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.

Anybody have a great pediatrician and OBGYN (and hospital) they would recommend?

I'm looking for a great OBGYN and a good hospital to have my baby at. (I've looked at the hospital reviews and because of them I'm kind of wanting to have my baby in another state at this point.) Please help! I also haven't been able to find a pediatrician or OB with great reviews who is nearby. I'd prefer someone close but am willing to go downtown too. Thank you so much for recommendations! I really appreciate it 😊

  • For an OB/GYN, hands down, I recommend Dr. Micah Garb at Northwestern-Lake Forest. We just delivered our first at Lake Forest in March. I know it is a bit of a drive, ( but if you were looking at going as far as out of state, I imagine you don't...

For an OB/GYN, hands down, I recommend Dr. Micah Garb at Northwestern-Lake Forest. We just delivered our first at Lake Forest in March. I know it is a bit of a drive, ( but if you were looking at going as far as out of state, I imagine you don't mind a bit of a commute.) Long story short, I began seeing Dr. Garb when he was at a private practice in Streetorville. He's fantastic enough that I followed him to the burbs. When choosing a hospital to deliver it, we primarily looked at Swedish, Prentice, and Lake Forest. I, too, was unimpressed with Swedish. Our delivery experience at Lake Forest was hands-down the best it could have been. The staff was amazing, and we felt like we were the only patients there. I was also a high risk pregnancy, and never once doubted any care or advice we received.

As far as a pediatrician, we're going to a Northwestern affiliated office at North & Clyborn. We've seen all but one of the Drs. there, and it's been kinda 'meh'. Definitely haven't clicked with any of the Doctors or been impressed, but not bad enough that I'd say to steer clear. PM me if you have any questions, best of luck, and congratulations!!!

  • Illinois Masonic was fantastic. The level of personal attention and care was incredible, and they don't rush you out of there, unlike Prentiss, which we were warned is baby factory. Their ObGyn faculty group has a lot of great doctors. Dr Melissa Dennis, Dr Popper.

We also highly recommend our pediatrician--Dr Nava Segall. She's with Lurie Children's but sees infants at Illinois Masonic as well.

Veterans' Day 2017 - Four Steps We Can All Take To Celebrate It Together....

On this very special US holiday, we celebrate all of our living veterans who have served or are serving in any branch of the military, active, reserve or National Guard, peacetime or wartime. We also take time to remember our POWs and MIAs in active hope of their imminent return to their loved ones and our nation's soil.

Greetings My Neighbors,

Saturday, November 11 is Veterans' Day. On this very special US holiday, we celebrate all of our living veterans who have served or are serving in any branch of the military, active, reserve or National Guard, peacetime or wartime. We also take time to remember our POWs and MIAs in active hope of their imminent return to their loved ones and our nation's soil.

Everybody can take part in Veterans' Day activities. Here's how in four steps....

1) Thank a veteran. If you do not know a veteran, head out to one of the many Veterans' Day ceremonies as you will surely be able to thank a veteran there.

2) Support a veteran. You can make a monetary donation to a wide variety of veterans' organizations. A good local organization right here in the Northwest Area is Chicago Veterans. chicagovets.org. You can also Google for other agencies to support.

3) Remember a veteran. Because Veterans' Day is about those veterans still living, we read the names of our POWs and MIAs. You can do that by going to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency here: dpaa.mil. Once there, select "Our Missing" and choose the list by war/conflict and then the state. You can also search the list by name as well as select names by branch of service. Take a few minutes to read the names.

4) Join with veterans. There are numerous Veterans' Day ceremonies going on. Give it a search for one near you. All are welcome to attend the annual Edgebrook Community Association Veterans' Day Flag Ceremony on Saturday, November 11 at 4 PM at Kinzua, Hiawatha and Lehigh. For the first time, we'll be raising the POW/MIA flag over Edgebrook. Check social media and the ECA website for more information as it comes out.

That's it. I hope you are able to join in Veterans' Day 2017. Questions? Please ask...Jac Charlier at jac.charlier@gmail.com.

I hope they blow the big guys out of the water.

Caught Man casing my house

Drove up to my house on block of 4900 W Warwick to see a young man walking down the side of my house. He was wearing a gray sweatshirt with hood on "Kenny from South Park" style so face was not visible. I asked what is he doing and he shrugged me off and started walking fast around the corner. Noticed my back gate from alley wide open as well as side gate. Ran to chase and get picture but be had disappeared. Be on watch and keep windows locked. My back window was wide open and if hadn't came home, he probably would have broken in.

Our garage was robbed at 4055 N Kolmar Ave on October 2nd

Last night our garage was broken into and my Cannodale 10 was stolen. I am attaching a photo of it. I feel like this was a targeted grab as no one else's garages were broken into. I literally had the bicycle in the brand new garage for less than 48 hours. We were hoping that we moved into a safe neighborhood, but after just 3 months we were proven wrong.

If you see or hear of anything, please let me know. My email is: ericalvarez22@gmail.com

  • Don Harper How's this for short?

That is great to hear. Hope you get him. Over in the 4300 block of Keeler we managed to catch a creep that was stealing packages from the front hall with a Ring doorbell system that not only let's you see who is in your hall when there is motion but records it. A couple other neighbors on the block have the system and we were able to compare notes and the cops actually were able to catch the creep.

  • Awesome news. I love when technology outsmarts the bad guys

Cook County Towing/Avondale Collision - Open Meeting at City Hall

Neighbors - we've all complained now we must insist the City follow through! Please attend an open meeting at City Hall, 121 N LaSalle, room 805 on Thurs, Oct 5, 10 AM.

The purpose of this meeting is to address the numerous complaints of reckless driving, aggressive behavior, noise at all hours of the day and night, misuse of the lot at Keeler & Milwaukee in accordance with zoning, and overall "junkyard" state of the property occupied by these businesses.

Please attend. Please bring your neighbors. Please call the alderman's office, and more importantly 911 when you see issues happening in real time.

We deserve respectful neighbors in our community and these businesses are infringing on our safety.
