Kick-off is at 11 AM but with the crowds expected you've got to get down there much earlier. Men of all ages are entirely welcome to attend.

Unity in Community leader Nancy Kerstein will be carrying our Unity in Community Northwest Area - city and surburbs - banner during the march. Community members interested in going should let us know either via this post or email us at Jac.Charlier@gmail.com. We'll connect up as a Northwest grouping (if you are not attending with another group already). More info is here: http://womens121marchonchicago.org/

They gave much and got little from the government. And no, they didn't own slaves--Jimmy Carter's, Bill Clinton's ancestors did but we're paying for it.)
These illegal alien immigrant children were forcibly removed from the country of their birth by their illegal immigrant alien parents and thus have many ties to their native lands via language, religion and culture--and few here. Indeed, many of them proudly "resist" American culture such as language while proudly taking what they can.
And now for your truly disconnected reasoning:
The two Koreas joining together is a good sign as it reduces tensions between the two Koreas, opening up another area of communication between the two. Hopefully it will be the beginning of the end of the evil system in N Korea which is horribly destroying
    its citizenry.
Hawaii and the West Coast have always been under threat of attacks--perhaps you've heard of Pearl Harbor? Under Obama, our military funding and vigilance were reduced; Trump is increasing it and thus our safety.

  • why you come here to troll us “good neighbor”? nobody forcing you to participate. this is a positive event for those wishing to attend amidst the overwhelming news the past few months about atrocities against women.

Koch Foods?

Hi everyone,
I'm interested in the area, but I noticed there's a large chicken processing plant nearby. It seems like this could be quite a nuisance and I had some questions for the neighborhood. Is the facility noisy at odd hours? Do they actually slaughter chickens there, or is it just processing? I'm worried about seeing or hearing truckloads of live birds. I'm out and about very early in the morning.

  • Can anyone speak to the smell during the summer? We are considering purchasing in the Terraces and wondering if the smell is still an issue. Since it’s winter and cold outside we haven’t been able to notice any smells, but am worried that changes in the summer! Thank you!

  • I never had an issue with smell there, lived nearby and drove by a lot. As the alderman said, they don’t have live chickens there. You can sometimes smell the commerical bakery on Kolmar which is nice!

Want to know more about this national holiday? Keep reading.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent
question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” Against what seemed like
impossible odds, Dr. King and scores of his fellow citizens of all races came
together and, ultimately, helped bend the moral arc of the universe toward
justice. In recognition of Dr. King’s incredible legacy of service to all, Congress
designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of
service in 1994, and charged the Corporation for National and Community
Service with leading this effort. Taking place each year on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a “day on, not a day off.” Today's commemoration of the MLK Day of Service on Monday, January 15 is an opportunity to remember that history. It is also a time to consider how much work still remains to fulfill Dr. King’s dream.

affordable snow removal service/person?

hello neighbors!
We are a new business at the corner of Avondale and Pulaski and we are looking for a more affordable option for our snow removal. We're interested in a professional service for heavier snow falls (over one inch) and/or a local person who could just (perhaps with a snowblower?) take care of our sidewalks during light snowfalls. We've gotten lucky so far this year but there is still (purportedly) a lot of winter days left!

Thanks!

My car was parked right out in front of my building on the same block. I am not sure if it happened overnight Saturday to Sunday (Jan 6th o Jan 7th) or Sunday to Monday (Jan 7th to Jan 8th) as I did not drive my car on Sunday. Monday morning however when I left for work the car sounded like truck, and was extremely loud when accelerating. I took it to Iggy's Muffler shop on Montrose and Harlem and was told that someone had cut through the front, and was half way through the back with they either gave up, or got spooked and left. Iggy's did great work and only charged me $50 to weld everything back together.

Not sure there is any way to prevent this from happening in the future, other than parking in well lit areas and everyone keeping a watchful eye. Unfortunately I do not have garage access which would be the best option.

Greetings My Neighbors!

Just got this urgent appeal from a sister American Legion Post. I'm asking you to contribute by Wednesday, December 20 to the 2017 Toys-for-Tots Drive, The Drive is short 10,000 toys in two age groups: GIRLS Ages 10 to 13 and BOYS Ages 10 to 13. Toys received by this Wednesday are able to be delivered on time by USMC 2/24 (2nd Battalion, 24th Regiment).

Toys should be new, in the original packaging, and unwrapped. Please – no stuffed animals.

Here’s two ways you can easily contribute:

1) Drop off toys at any IHOPS in Cook County. For our NW area, here are the nearby locations:
IHOP SKOKIE, 9500 Skokie Blvd, SKOKIE, IL 60077
IHOP NORRIDGE, 7056 West Forest Preserve Drive, NORRIDGE, IL 60706
IHOP CHICAGO, 2818 W Diversey Ave, CHICAGO, IL 60647

2) Donate online to Toys for Tots:
http://chicago-il.toysfortots.org/local-coordinator-sites/lco-sites/local-donate.aspx

Your donated dollars will go a LONG way because the Marines have special buying agreements (big discounts) with the toy stores with NO shipping and NO sales tax! (Toys for Tots is an registered 501c3 charity. So your dollars are also tax deductible).

97% of your donation goes to providing toys, books and other gifts to less fortunate children. 3% is spent on support - principally covering fundraising expenses. Not one donated dollar goes to pay for salaries or any other manpower costs.

Questions? Please contact me at jac.charlier@gmail.com or via Nextdoor or just around the neighborhood.

Folks, we can do this...together. Thank you, in advance!

Garbage disposal

In the summer I was told by the Aldermans office that if I have stuff other than routine garbage (rugs, couch, tables, mattress etc). I was told to give them a few days advance notice. When I recently called, they now say that this stuff is no longer picked up and I would have to hire a private company. Does anyone else have this problem? I took rugs out and I don't know what to do with them.

Half-staffing of the United States Flag for National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, 2017

Greetings My Neighbors,

For National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, please place your flags at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Thursday, December 7 from sunrise to sunset. National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, as a mark of respect for those American patriots who died as a result of their service at Pearl Harbor.

If you cannot place your flag at half-staff, attaching a black ribbon to the top of a U.S. flag is an acceptable alternative for flags that cannot be lowered to half-staff. (See the attached picture).

The Troops will be back.

Also, more than a few of you have reached out and asked what else can be done. Easiest and quickest is to make an online donation to our local young veterans via Chicago Veterans. Here's their webpage to donate and learn more: https://chicagovets.org Thank you!

That's it. Look well at the photos. They are of those who are headed into harms way for you and for me. They will all give some and some will give all.

Questions on donating? Please ask. Jac.Charlier@gmail.com

CHICAGO -- For the past seven years, Air Force veteran Anthony Johnson has been selling newspapers out of a beaten up stand at the corner of Milwaukee and Faragutt. Chicago Police Lieutenant John Garrido connected with Anthony about a year ago and decided to give Anthony a better place to sell his newspapers.

Garrido posted a Facebook Live video asking for help. Volunteers stepped up, and they spent the last few weeks transforming this stand.

All of this was done with the help of local sponsors like Tony Marino of Marino Jeep. They took Johnson to the local Dick's Sporting Goods and bought Johnson all new winter attire to help him stay warm.

Johnson makes about $120 a week from his newsstand, and most of the time, he's just trying to by. He says he sleeps outdoors more often than indoors. So, John set up a GoFundMe account to help with Anthony's living expenses.

"While this is not a long term fix, our hope is this will give Anthony a chance to get a leg up to take care of himself down the road. We will also look into other resources that may be available to him as a vet," the GoFundMe page says.

Today, the newsstand looks brand new, and artist Peter Bucks is painting two murals on the stand.

The new and improved newsstand will be unveiled Thursday night at 5:30 p.m.
