Lieutenant John Garrido drove by it every day. The shingles were coming off the roof. The wood was rotting. That the shack continued to stand at all was something of a miracle. Most of the neighborhood didn’t notice the dilapidated structure at all – when things are seemingly beyond repair, they’re often ignored, forgotten. The shack was out in the open on the corner of a busy street, yet invisible. But for 15 years, every day on his way to work, Garrido noticed. As a 27-year veteran Chicago cop who came from a law enforcement family dedicated to serving the Windy City, Garrido took great pride in his home, particularly his neighborhood of Gladstone Park. He knew something needed to be done.

Garrido opened the piece of plywood that served as the shack’s front door. Among the dirt and trash was a surprising discovery: a stack of recent Sunday newspapers. A return visit the following Sunday revealed what the space truly was – a newsstand. Standing inside was 60-year-old Anthony Johnson." Parked car in driveway?

I have a question about parking a car in my driveway. My inlaws are going south for the next month or so and have left their vehicle in our driveway. It will mostly remained parked there -- we don't plan on using it much if at all. Do I need to purchase a city sticker for it? It has current IL plates but is registered in a suburb.

Bob -- I'm all for reducing expenses; my family has only one car because we walk/bike or use public transit most of the time. But telling Sami
that she doesn't need a car is a bit presumptuous.

If you have kids -- especially little ones -- you've got to know how incredibly difficult it is to get along without a car, even in the city. If you have a child who suddenly spikes a high fever and the doctor says "Bring in her in right away!" you're not going to take her on a Divvy. You also don't want to take the time to get to a place with a Zipcar, and getting a car seat (or multiple car seats) in and out of a Lyft or Uber can be a Herculean task. Taking them on public transit then exposes everyone else to germs, as well, and can take twice as long as driving. You're also assuming that she (or her kids) are not disabled in any way.

Sami -- I applaud you for doing your best to advance your education. My mom was a single mom, and as an adult I now marvel at how she did it. Being a single parent is exhausting, and the deck often appears to be stacked against you -- especially when you are trying to do everything by the book but you just can't manage it all. Luckily my mom was good at negotiating and was able to arrange payment plans for things like doctor bills, and she eventually paid everything off. But sometimes it was $10 a month for those big bills, and I'm sure there were times when she didn't know how she was going to pay the rent.

    So please hang in there.

  • Sami Mom of 3

    K,
I appreciate your kind words. I do the best I can given any situation. It doesn't come easy but the results are rewarding. Going back to school and getting my degree was the best choice I could have made. I want to build a better future for myself and my children and be able to show them that you can make the most of things even when times are hard. Thank you.

If and when a copper from 017 shows up he goes right by these violations. If you ask the copper to write them they always say "I come back later and do it" which never happens. Maybe he's doing favors for them or their related. Just like the rumor that he's doing favors for Mell. Mell gave him the placards to put on the trucks saying they're exempt. Funny but you used to be entitled to only ONE placard and the company name had to be posted on the truck ( his is not). Mell gave them one than one. My understanding is those placards are no longer legal and should not be used. I think there some shenanigans going on here with Mell and the po po and this guy.

    Why are comments being deleted?
robin in WRP writes "What about Tax paying citizens, brought here as small children, being forcibly removed from the country the call home and sent to a country where they have no ties?"
She made a mistake there. Those aren't citizens, their legal status is "Illegal Alien".
    Not "off topic". Thanks.

  • @Phil: Right on! Is EveryBlock becoming part of the Fake News network? If a comment does not conform to their agenda it's deleted? Of course I suspect no one will see this because it also will be deleted. We'll see.

Screaming guy by Irving and Pulaski

I know this will seem a bit... nuts.

Frequently, I hear some guy screaming nonsense in the middle of the day right near this intersection. I've SEEN him doing it a couple times too. Screaming at nobody. Perhaps has a medical condition. Either way, has anyone else seen him? I really wonder if he screams inside his apartment building which is near me as well.

  • I’ve seen the screaming guy often near the Irving Park Blue line station several times. The guy I’m talking about is unmistakable...not distracting only in certain locations. He is clearly mentally ill and screams at the top of his lungs; I can hear him from a few blocks away. He is saying something but I have no idea what. He is so loud that I always think that he must have a sore throat from the screaming.

  • Ellen K. From the far NW side and now back.

yeah, every day around 4:30 he walks north on Pulaski from the Blue Line screaming. Once I saw him ON the el platform at 7:30am screaming at the cars...and I swear he was telling them to have a nice day! LOL He got on neither el when I was there.

The reason I say that is because even though it is a bit warmer, someone in an SUV (Grey Nissan Mirano, I think) would know if the window was opened. People, this is the problem: if we don't teach our children to do better, how can we expect better from them? Just bothers me because I pick up trash in front of my house and neighbors, shovel snow, etc, and don't feel that anyone realizes they are in a 'neighborhood' any longer. When did this blatant disregard for others start?

  • Try Kabobi Grill just a block north.

  • Try the whitefish weekend special at Kabobi. Ask for it so that they get the message that we want it on the regular menu, not only on the weekend specials. I'm addicted to that kabobi whitefish!!! I get really cranky when they don't offer it. Help me!!! 😍

Koch Foods?

Hi everyone,
I'm interested in the area, but I noticed there's a large chicken processing plant nearby. It seems like this could be quite a nuisance and I had some questions for the neighborhood. Is the facility noisy at odd hours? Do they actually slaughter chickens there, or is it just processing? I'm worried about seeing or hearing truckloads of live birds. I'm out and about very early in the morning.

  • Can anyone speak to the smell during the summer? We are considering purchasing in the Terraces and wondering if the smell is still an issue. Since it’s winter and cold outside we haven’t been able to notice any smells, but am worried that changes in the summer! Thank you!

  • I never had an issue with smell there, lived nearby and drove by a lot. As the alderman said, they don’t have live chickens there. You can sometimes smell the commerical bakery on Kolmar which is nice!

Want to know more about this national holiday? Keep reading.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent
question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” Against what seemed like
impossible odds, Dr. King and scores of his fellow citizens of all races came
together and, ultimately, helped bend the moral arc of the universe toward
justice. In recognition of Dr. King’s incredible legacy of service to all, Congress
designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of
service in 1994, and charged the Corporation for National and Community
Service with leading this effort. Taking place each year on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a “day on, not a day off.” Today's commemoration of the MLK Day of Service on Monday, January 15 is an opportunity to remember that history. It is also a time to consider how much work still remains to fulfill Dr. King’s dream.

Illegal parking on private property

  • Someone parked blocking the entrance to my driveway. I called the police and they came and wrote a $100.00 ticket and asked me if I wanted the car towed. I told them the ticket was sufficient for the first time. He said if they ever block the driveway again I can have them towed.
BTW, I do have a store bought sign that warns people that if they park and block the driveway their car will be towed away.

Candidates running for Illinois Attorney General have been shown to be loyal to the Party. Aaron Goldstein is running to give the Attorney General's office back to the people. He will be the people's attorney.

Right now, this office is representing big money, big corporations and political insiders. No one is representing the people. Aaron will return the office to its intended function. As a life-long Public Defender, Aaron Goldstein is the candidate who most truly aligns with the AG's original mission.

Unapologetically progressive, Aaron’s compelling new video, tells his story as a native Chicagoan who grew up to become a public defender of everyday Illinoisans. Goldstein graduated from Lane Tech High School and then earned his bachelors’ degree in political science from the University of Illinois and his JD from the University of Iowa.

When he finished law school, he applied for only one job: to become a public defender, “because I believe in the human dignity of us all,” Goldstein said. He has devoted his career to representing individuals—real people—in criminal and civil rights cases. He has litigated hundreds of cases.

“I believe that a lawyer’s job is to stand for the most vulnerable in our society and to live out the principle of ‘justice for all,’” said Goldstein. Throughout his career, he has witnessed, firsthand, the destructive impact of income inequality, segregation and unfairness in the criminal justice system. “The criminal justice system is broken, but we can change this.”

In the video he shows how he stood up against the machine and won by beating long-time politician and power broker Richard Mell to become 33rd Ward Democratic Committeeman. He is running for Attorney General to make bold, progressive change—to stand up to powerful interests, make lasting criminal justice reform and fight government corruption.

This video is part of a media campaign and will be seen throughout Illinois.

Home - Aaron Goldstein for Attorney General
I am running for Attorney General to stand up for all Illinoisans. I will be a champion for justice and stand up for all of us. That's what I've stood for my whole life and that's why I'm running for Attorney General.

affordable snow removal service/person?

hello neighbors!
We are a new business at the corner of Avondale and Pulaski and we are looking for a more affordable option for our snow removal. We're interested in a professional service for heavier snow falls (over one inch) and/or a local person who could just (perhaps with a snowblower?) take care of our sidewalks during light snowfalls. We've gotten lucky so far this year but there is still (purportedly) a lot of winter days left!

Breakroom / Finches / Ravinia Brewing

Does anyone know when Ravinia Brewing will open? That carcass of a store front is just sitting there.

  • I sent Ravinia a message and this is the response I got:
I wish I had a better answer for you, but unfortunately there are a variety of issues to work through at the Montrose spot that continue to put timing and planning up in the air. It is a wonderful spot and a wonderful neighborhood which we are really hoping to make work - but some thing are simply out of our control. Keep checking back with us and hopefully we'll know more soon!

  • Eric Pepeson NW-side deplorable, based-stickman, commie-crusher

That's too bad, ya' know I always wanted to open up a nice restaurant & bar. That building would a make a good dirty neighborhood strip club with a nasty lunch buffet. Maybe put some of those slot machines in the back and patrons can also bet on the ponies with an OTB. Forget about all those fancy microbrews, only Schlitz or Old Style for a buck and a quarter each. It will be the classiest establishment on the NW side. Call it "Deplorables"

Old issues of National Geographics

Howdy neighbors- I have about 5 years worth of magazines that I want to get rid of. Wondering if this is something a school wants or any crafty folks. 2006-2010 are the approximate years. They also have the fake leather book box that they are stored in.
Anyone... Anyone... Bueller? If not then I will just take them to the Village Disco...

  • Hi there! I would be happy to take some of the National Geographics off your hands. I send care packages to troops and those magazines are requested and very well received. Let me know if I could grab some. Thanks!

  • ElizabethB..how cool!!! (You , too!) Thanks for this!!!

Catalytic Converter theft attempt

Hi Neighbors,
Just a heads up. I had an attempted theft of my catalytic converter over the weekend. I live on the 3900 block of Kedvale, and drive a 2012 Jeep Liberty. My car was parked right out in front of my building on the same block. I am not sure if it happened overnight Saturday to Sunday (Jan 6th o Jan 7th) or Sunday to Monday (Jan 7th to Jan 8th) as I did not drive my car on...

Hi Neighbors,
Just a heads up. I had an attempted theft of my catalytic converter over the weekend. I live on the 3900 block of Kedvale, and drive a 2012 Jeep Liberty. My car was parked right out in front of my building on the same block. I am not sure if it happened overnight Saturday to Sunday (Jan 6th o Jan 7th) or Sunday to Monday (Jan 7th to Jan 8th) as I did not drive my car on Sunday. Monday morning however when I left for work the car sounded like truck, and was extremely loud when accelerating. I took it to Iggy's Muffler shop on Montrose and Harlem and was told that someone had cut through the front, and was half way through the back with they either gave up, or got spooked and left. Iggy's did great work and only charged me $50 to weld everything back together.

Not sure there is any way to prevent this from happening in the future, other than parking in well lit areas and everyone keeping a watchful eye. Unfortunately I do not have garage access which would be the best option.

Greetings My Neighbors!

It's time to get ready to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Day on Monday, January 15.

In recognition of Dr. King’s incredible legacy of service to all, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service. Against what seemed like impossible odds, Dr. King and scores of his fellow citizens of all races came together and, ultimately, helped bend the moral arc of the universe toward justice. The upcoming commemoration of the MLK Day of Service on Monday, January 15, is an opportunity to remember that history and re-commit ourselves as citizens by volunteering in service to one another. It is also a time to consider how much work still remains to fulfill Dr. King’s dream.

You can get going to celebrate MLK Day in three easy steps:

1) Dine
Register now to join with your neighbors at the Northwest area's first and only MLK Day Dinner on Monday, January 15 from 6:30PM - 8:30PM. Once again this year we'll be at the Wildwood Tavern**, 6941 W. Touhy, Niles. Cost is only $15/person. The price includes a chili bar, soup, salad and breads.

To register you can 1) simply reply to this post or 2) send an email to us at jac.charlier@gmail.com or 3) click here https://www.facebook.com/events/380722305718681/ for Facebook Event site.

**Wildwood Tavern has free parking and is easily accessible via CTA.

2) Donate
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” Through the MLK National Day of Service, you can answer that question. Locate where and how here: https://www.nationalservice.gov/mlkday

3) Demand
The single word that best describes the work of Dr. King is justice. To that end, this year Unity in Community is proud to support the Chicago Women's March on January 20. Learn more here: http://womens121marchonchicago.org/

  • Phill Lucille, give me strength.

Helen NoH is a big fan of controversial alderman Joe Moore (49h Ward). She's angry because I expressed my dislike for that alderman yesterday.
To her, if you don't love Joe Moore with all your heart, then you're a "troll".

We all have different opinions, Helen, don't get angry about it.

Baby Stuff Donation

Hey folks, I have accumulated a ton of baby stuff over the years ( 5 children ), Potty trainer, basinet, several fold up plans, bath tub, etc. I donate to the epilepsy foundation but they do not take baby stuff. Also, most of it is too big to box. Does anyone know who may take these items? They are all in excellent condition. Also, it would have to be a pick up. Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Ilene, I think I also have children's boots!!

  • Ron in Ravenswood Home Remodeler

I Have an unused, brand new baby swing seat. Goodwill will not take it. Liability they say. Cannot just put it in the recycle bin. Someone can use it. Please e-mail me at gum006@yahoo.com. I will carry it to you. Live near Lawrence and Damen.
