Massive New School Proposed On Montrose — Community Meeting Thursday @ 6pm

On Thursday April 26 at 6pm there will be a community meeting about North Park Elementary’s plan to build a massive 63,000+ square foot school at their current location. This is three times the size of their existing structure. A related plan to more than double the enrollment will also be put into place. The meeting will take place at 2017 W. Montrose. Please attend if you want your voice heard.

Here are the proposed plans:

  • RidingThroughRavenswood probably on a bike

BettyR - I totally see what you mean. I ride by Waters on Wilson often and it does get a little crazy. I guess I just meant that if everyone who could ride a bike were on a bike, traffic wouldn't be an issue. I know I'm being Pollyanna-ish about it...but one can dream, right! Also, I guess I'd rather have traffic in the city than live in a suburb, no contest. It's a sacrifice I'm happy to make. Ride safe everyone!

  • @Riding: Agreed. To further your stance, one might suggest this to all the folks driving their cars from far-off neighborhoods to drop their kids off at NPES in North Center. Maybe your idea could even help those neighborhood schools that the NPES parents currently reside in and commute from succeed.

Gun Dealer Licensing Act (SB1657)

The General Assembly is back to work in Springfield today and we have a historic opportunity override Gov. Rauner’s veto of SB 1657, the Gun Dealer Licensing Act. But, we need you to get it done by calling and emailing your legislators today.

Gun violence is an everyday problem in Chicago and it's fueled by crime guns traced back to Illinois gun dealers. Contact your lawmaker NOW. It’s their one job to keep our families and communities safe. Click image to watch a video and send an email right now.

Governor Rauner has vetoed the Gun Dealer Licensing Act (SB1657). It's now up to your state legislators to override the veto. Any child killed from gun violence impacts every parent. Sadly, injuries from gun violence are the leading cause of death for children in Illinois.

Victim #2 – The Independent Gun Retailer. If passed, SB1657 would require firearm retailers to drastically alter their business processes. Such would include upgraded training for employees, updated security systems, and increased expenditure of staff-hours dedicated to government inspections of their stores. The net result would be a significant increase in fixed overhead costs for independent retailers. Increased overhead costs would be passed along to customers in the form of higher retailer prices to the tune of $150 to $300 per gun. Increased gun prices would artificially drive down demand for firearms by the law-abiding public. In effect, SB1657 would establish a tax on a Constitutional right. It should be noted that "big box" retailers are exempted from the bill's requirements because their gun sales do not exceed 20% of gross yearly sales for all lines. The exemption puts independent dealers at a serious competitive disadvantage – further driving the demise of independent gun shops. Having very little skin in the game could prompt the big box retailers to withdraw entirely from the firearms market – thus leaving Illinois citizens with no accessibility to firearms.

As usual, Bob is uninformed, but he never lets that cramp his style when it comes to pushing his agenda. Bill 1657 is an unnecessary layer of bureaucracy that seeks to create anti-gun 5-member licensing boards and onerous mandatory regulations, fees and costs potentially in the thousands of dollars and excessive amounts of red tape that would almost assuredly force the closure of many firearm dealers, and prevent prospective owners from opening new ones. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) already licenses and closely monitors all federally licensed firearm dealers (FFLs) and strictly enforces any violation of federal law.

I'm having a small surgical procedure done under anesthesia and I need to find someone to pick me up. I don't have any family locally and no one else that is able to help. The surgery center will not allow me to use an Uber or taxi and want me to provide a name of someone they can call when I am ready to be released. I'm looking for services similar to these two (links below) but neither are in Chicago. I don't need any special car or services. With the size of the city, you'd think they'd have something here but I can't find anything. As I start to get older, I do worry that I'll need this more often. Any ideas are appreciated.

Area around Lawndale/Leland Good for a Young Family?

Hello Albany Park!

We're looking to move to the neighborhood, and have found leads on a couple of places, one of the most promising being around the Lawndale/Leland area. Wondering if the community has any thoughts on how this area is suited to a couple with a 6 month old kid, all of whom commute on the CTA to work/daycare.

In general, do you consider this area safe? Would you take your kid for a walk around this part of the neighborhood? What grocery stores/restaurants are walkable? We've looked at the crime data and at some other resources, but would appreciate a local take on what it's like to live around here.

Any thoughts or feedback are appreciated. Thanks!

I called the cops and they showed up within 2 minutes but we could not find him. I’m not sure if he was armed because he had his hands in his pockets so he either was and didn’t want to flash the gun or wasn’t and wanted me to think that he was.

Be careful out there everyone and keep your head on a swivel.

  • Just asking, no disrespect,...how were you almost mugged? You said he kept his hands in his pockets. Did he say anything or approach you? But thank you for the heads-up!

Saving Parking Spaces. Wonder why it's hard to find a parking space?

Once in a while you see someone park in the middle of 2 spaces and then later come and bring another vehicle and move the first vehicle back to make room for the other vehicle. It's hard to find parking and then you have people saving spaces or parking their business trucks on residential streets or vehicles that have been left for weeks in the same spot.

  • Yes it bad but when u get home & cars from the brewery are parked on the side streets. Plus some houses have more than 1 car. I feel the brewery need to buy lot next to it & have a lot & or permit parking.

The city should have something similar to "meter maids" who are sent out to tickets or inspect the cars parked over seven days or otherwise parked illegally. . Trained police officers aren't needed for this.

Obviously won’t be coming home too often in the middle of the night but still something to consider. I do a lot of walking/running in the middle of the day which is also something on my mind.

2. How is parking for you? I see most of it is permit parking but still looks busy. Also, how is parking for guests?

3. What do you love best about the neighborhood?

Thank you so much!

Probably got stopped by the police for public intoxication (i.e., acting the fool), and they found that he had a concealed weapon. That was enough to write him up.

FOID or CCL holder should know better. IF he had one, I hope he doesn't have it anymore.

The legislation spells out which weapons are included in the definition of assault weapons and also includes the sale of so-called “large capacity ammunition feeding devices” of more than 10 rounds in a single magazine, belt or drum.

If you share Sen. Silverstein's concerns about gun safety in our state, particularly in light of the mass shootings in Florida, Texas and Las Vegas, please provide your contact information to stay updated on this legislation and other gun safety bills the senator sponsors. Thanks.

    Dear Mr. Kastigar:

Thank you for contacting me regarding gun violence and access to guns in our country. I appreciate hearing from you, and I share your concerns.

Over 30,000 Americans are killed by guns each year, and this violence takes a devastating toll on families and communities. I support sensible gun safety laws that will help reduce the number of gun deaths in America. I support measures such as universal background checks to keep guns out of the hands of convicted felons, mentally unstable individuals, and domestic abusers. An overwhelming majority of Americans know this is just common sense. I also support efforts to crack down on illegal gun trafficking and straw purchasing, and to limit the civilian use of high-capacity ammunition magazines that have been used by mass shooters to cause enormous harm.

We can and must do more to keep guns out of the hands of those who would misuse them, and we can do so while protecting the right of law-abiding citizens to use guns in a responsible and legal way for sport, hunting, and self-defense. My wife and I grew up in families of hunters. We know the rite of passage when a parent takes his child out into the woods and teaches him or her to shoot. The hunters I know are good people who love the sport and hate the people who use firearms to terrorize and kill.

Gun violence is a complicated problem, and there is no one solution that will stop all the tragic shootings. Reducing this violence will require dedicated efforts by families, community leaders, law enforcement, employers, faith leaders, and elected officials to prevent guns from falling into the wrong hands and to address the conditions which create violence. Unfortunately, in recent years common-sense legislation to prevent gun violence has been blocked in Congress by well-funded political organizations. But I’m not giving up. I will continue to work to ensure the federal government helps address violent crime in our communities.

Really going to miss Sears Store at Irving Park and Cicero.

Heard they're going to close in July this year.

I bought my leather wallets, gardening tools, mattresses, TVs & Blu-ray from Sears. I bought Dad’s clothes from Sears. It was hard to find reasonably priced casual well made men’s clothes until I went to Sears. I wanted to buy my stackable washer & dryer from Sears but they didn’t have what I was looking for. I have a friend who liked to buy her work blazers there. Sears did alot of things well. I will miss the department stores. It was a different experience.

  • I will miss Carson's very much too. I think part of the problem is people don't have a lot of extra money to spend.

Moving to Lawrence & Spaulding?

Went to this area this weekend to look at a room and I liked the place and the hood. I walked around a bit, seemed like a cool diverse area. I’m aware there’s gangs in the hood.. I’m not worried about that.. it’s Chicago..Just want to get your opinions on this area. I’m a young black male. If that adds anything. I saw virtually no blacks. Which is fine as well.

Proximity to the brown line is great, too. Parking right now is a hot mess because of the construction, but in 5 years or so, when that's all done (j/k), it should be fine. ;)

But everyone's always been polite, no trouble-makers or weird stuff going on. Pretty diverse crowd - our upstairs tenants are black, FWIW. Safety-wise, it's a quiet corner of Albany Park. No visible shady stuff going on at night. It's still the city, of course... know your surroundings, don't be stupid, etc. My only beef with the neighborhood is the lack of green space. I'd love a decent park.

Women's underwear?

Guys, we are demo-ing our basement, and we found these weird small plastic bags of women's underwear stuffed into the ceiling insulation. Do we have a Dateline situation in our ceiling? What do you think the police station would do if I walked in with underwear and told them I had concerns?

When we were tearing down a wall in the kitchen, we also found a pink pair of women's underwear and some heineken bottles. We just laughed it off. But maybe we shouldn't have?

Why is pink women's underwear hidden in our ceilings?

  • He has 8 more years to go in jail for federal gun charges , but would not be surprised if he's out by 2020 for good behavior, then he'll face state charges for shooting the other pillar of the community whom I'm betting will refuse to testify against him for fear and he'll get paroled for another 5 years or so until he does something stupid again.

  • Fortunately his 'victim' is suing BJ for his last pennies and will be giving sworn testimony that I'm guessing can be used by prosecutors?

Found Pug is Home Already

Thanks for the suggestions. Turns out one of my neighbors was dog sitting for a friend. Oscar the speed demon took off down the alley and went out of sight. He is now home safe with his dad sitter. Thanks again.

  • so glad he is home.

Glad to hear that Oscar made it home safely! This could easily happen to anyone. Nonetheless, it might be the last time that friend will be dog sitting!

  • If the recent posts don't prove to us all that Robin Hood Rohdenburg is on Arena's payroll (albeit under the table to maintain his government handouts) than you are just not paying attention.

Robin Hood, you have repeatedly asserted you are unemployable as you consistently exhibit on EB that you have marketable job skills. The ADA provides allowances to employers who hire those who are disabled. As I have stated before, I have worked with a blind man but Roibin Hood is "unemployable".

  • Why doesn't Bob confine his proselytizing to a single post? Perhaps because he has gotten significant push back on his other threads that address much the same subject matter or perhaps he feels that it is advantageous to blanket Everyblock with multiple posts to spread his anti-gun "gospel" to a wider audience.

Side swept car on Wilson

Only reason I parked my car on Wilson was because of ComEd. I hate parking my car on Wilson because I dread getting my car side swept and of course at 2:30 am today I heard a bang and my car alarm go off. I didn’t get to see who did it in time but a neighbor came out and said they went west towards Pulaski on Wilson. This happened at St. Louis & Wilson. I am wondering if anyone has cameras that may have captured the vehicle around this time? In the morning I’ll be able to see the paint color. I also found this in the street, it’s a long shot but maybe someone knows what kind of car it belongs to. It’s snowing but it isn’t that slippery to cause someone to do this.

I found it’s a 1997 bmw 528i. But if anyone has footage it would be helpful

  • 1. File a police report.
    2. Contact your insurance agency, scoop out $500 deductible (easier said than done) and get your car back and fixed in a couple of weeks.
    3. Stop playing detective, it's not going to get you anything but frustration, been there done that.
    Good luck be safe

I'm so sorry this happened to you. I'm an insurance professional with over 20 years in the business. File the police report and get 2-3 damage estimates. Damage estimates are free except for your time and trouble. If you cannot contact and work out a way for the other driver to pay for the damage they caused to your vehicle either out of pocket or through their reputable insurance carrier, ie if the agent is someone like Insurance King, Talrow Insurance, Marvell Towers as opposed to State Farm, Geico, Progressive or another big company you may want to look to your own insurance company provided you have comprehensive aka other than collision coverage. Reason being non-standard insurance companies generally don't have the best claim service and payment record. If, however, you have liability only, check your policy to see if you purchased uninsured motorist property damage coverage which MAY, depending on the terms of your insurance contract, respond to the damage caused in this incident. I hope this all works out for you!

FOUND PUG

Hi, found Oscar wandering around Leavitt and Barry. Anyone know who he belongs to? He has a tag and I called the number on it but have not heard back from anyone. Thanks for any help.

  • krw

Poor Pug. Either he's confused by the sitter and ran off, or the sitter is slacking. If I were the owner I would be freeking. Poor Oscar, but at least he's home.

  • Thanks for clearing that up......
