They may be better off looking for a new location to better fit the expanding needs similar to what Chicago Jewish Day School did. Even with their move still a traffic nightmare in morning. Before any institution or business goes in a traffic study should be required and ensure enough parking.

I'm having a small surgical procedure done under anesthesia and I need to find someone to pick me up. I don't have any family locally and no one else that is able to help. The surgery center will not allow me to use an Uber or taxi and want me to provide a name of someone they can call when I am ready to be released. I'm looking for services similar to these two (links below) but neither are in Chicago. I don't need any special car or services. With the size of the city, you'd think they'd have something here but I can't find anything. As I start to get older, I do worry that I'll need this more often. Any ideas are appreciated.

Area around Lawndale/Leland Good for a Young Family?

Hello Albany Park!
We're looking to move to the neighborhood, and have found leads on a couple of places, one of the most promising being around the Lawndale/Leland area. Wondering if the community has any thoughts on how this area is suited to a couple with a 6 month old kid, all of whom commute on the CTA to work/daycare.
In general, do you consider this area safe? Would you take your kid for a walk around this part of the neighborhood? What grocery stores/restaurants are walkable? We've looked at the crime data and at some other resources, but would appreciate a local take on what it's like to live around here.
Any thoughts or feedback are appreciated. Thanks!

Massive New School Proposed On Montrose — Community Meeting Thursday @ 6pm

On Thursday April 26 at 6pm there will be a community meeting about North Park Elementary’s plan to build a massive 63,000+ square foot school at their current location. This is three times the size of their existing structure. A related plan to more than double the enrollment will also be put into place. The meeting will take place at 2017 W. Montrose. Please attend if you want your voice heard.
Here are the proposed plans:

Yes the previous school did move. Proposed building is not contextual and does little to address parking/egress problems that will only increase. Ambitious plans to build and will they meet enrollment?

I called the cops and they showed up within 2 minutes but we could not find him. I’m not sure if he was armed because he had his hands in his pockets so he either was and didn’t want to flash the gun or wasn’t and wanted me to think that he was.
Be careful out there everyone and keep your head on a swivel.

Woman sexually assaulted in the brown line

A 20-year-old woman was standing on the platform at the Brown Line’s Francisco station on Thursday night when a man approached her, began kissing her and sexually assaulted her, Chicago police said.
The attacked happened around 10:40 p.m. at the station at 4648 N. Francisco Ave. in the Ravenswood Manor neighborhood on the Northwest Side.
The news said she wasn’t getting on a train but rather she was playing Pokémon Go....at 1040pm?!

Every day for the past five years, Sandy Hook Promise has been doing everything we possibly can to prevent more tragedies like the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary.
Now, students across the country are stepping up to power a new surge of momentum for meaningful change. They're not just demanding adults take action to protect them from gun violence – they're eager to lead efforts to prevent tragedies from happening in their own schools and communities, too.
That's why we're working so hard to encourage more students to create SAVE Promise Clubs – where young people are empowered with the tools to help prevent gun violence and sustain efforts to make their schools and communities safer.
This is one very real way we can help prevent tragedies before they tear more communities apart, so please: Can we count on you to help bring a SAVE Promise Club to your local school and empower students to save lives?
Click this link to learn more about how to bring a SAVE Promise Club to your local school to empower students to help prevent gun violence and save lives in their communities.
https://www.sandyhookpromise.org/savepromiseclub
Students are seizing this moment to push for real change, and it's up to us to support them. By working together, I know we will prevent more tragedies from happening.
Paula Fynboh
National Field and Programs DirectorP.S. Would you also forward this message to anyone you know who works in a school? The more people we can encourage to empower young people in their communities to make change, the more tragedies we can prevent and the more lives we can save from gun violence.

Saving Parking Spaces. Wonder why it's hard to find a parking space?

Once in a while you see someone park in the middle of 2 spaces and then later come and bring another vehicle and move the first vehicle back to make room for the other vehicle. It's hard to find parking and then you have people saving spaces or parking their business trucks on residential streets or vehicles that have been left for weeks in the same spot.
-
Yes it bad but when u get home & cars from the brewery are parked on the side streets. Plus some houses have more than 1 car. I feel the brewery need to buy lot next to it & have a lot & or permit parking.

Neighborhood Dad is correct. At a CAPS meeting, it was explained that your call to 911 goes to an operator who takes the information. That information goes to a dispatcher. The dispatcher assigns the police.
If it's a crime in progress, it goes to the top of the list. A parked car problem is down the list. You may need to call more than once to get to a time when the dispatcher has police available.
The city should have something similar to "meter maids" who are sent out to tickets or inspect the cars parked over seven days or otherwise parked illegally. . Trained police officers aren't needed for this.

Obviously won’t be coming home too often in the middle of the night but still something to consider. I do a lot of walking/running in the middle of the day which is also something on my mind.
2. How is parking for you? I see most of it is permit parking but still looks busy. Also, how is parking for guests?
3. What do you love best about the neighborhood?
Thank you so much!

The response I got from Sen. Durbin:
Dear Mr. Kastigar:
Thank you for contacting me regarding gun violence and access to guns in our country. I appreciate hearing from you, and I share your concerns.
Over 30,000 Americans are killed by guns each year, and this violence takes a devastating toll on families and communities. I support sensible gun safety laws that will help reduce the number of gun deaths in America. I support measures such as universal background checks to keep guns out of the hands of convicted felons, mentally unstable individuals, and domestic abusers. An overwhelming majority of Americans know this is just common sense. I also support efforts to crack down on illegal gun trafficking and straw purchasing, and to limit the civilian use of high-capacity ammunition magazines that have been used by mass shooters to cause enormous harm.
We can and must do more to keep guns out of the hands of those who would misuse them, and we can do so while protecting the right of law-abiding citizens to use guns in a responsible and legal way for sport, hunting, and self-defense. My wife and I grew up in families of hunters. We know the rite of passage when a parent takes his child out into the woods and teaches him or her to shoot. The hunters I know are good people who love the sport and hate the people who use firearms to terrorize and kill.

(continuation of response from Sen Durbin )
Gun violence is a complicated problem, and there is no one solution that will stop all the tragic shootings. Reducing this violence will require dedicated efforts by families, community leaders, law enforcement, employers, faith leaders, and elected officials to prevent guns from falling into the wrong hands and to address the conditions which create violence. Unfortunately, in recent years common-sense legislation to prevent gun violence has been blocked in Congress by well-funded political organizations. But I’m not giving up. I will continue to work to ensure the federal government helps address violent crime in our communities.
Thank you again for contacting me. Please feel free to keep in touch.
Sincerely,

Proximity to the brown line is great, too. Parking right now is a hot mess because of the construction, but in 5 years or so, when that's all done (j/k), it should be fine. ;)

Not a super-chatty block - people come and go from the multi-unit buildings and the condos on the corner, so I know few people by name despite being here 10+ years. But everyone's always been polite, no trouble-makers or weird stuff going on. Pretty diverse crowd - our upstairs tenants are black, FWIW. Safety-wise, it's a quiet corner of Albany Park. No visible shady stuff going on at night. It's still the city, of course... know your surroundings, don't be stupid, etc. My only beef with the neighborhood is the lack of green space. I'd love a decent park.

Women's underwear?

Guys, we are demo-ing our basement, and we found these weird small plastic bags of women's underwear stuffed into the ceiling insulation. Do we have a Dateline situation in our ceiling? What do you think the police station would do if I walked in with underwear and told them I had concerns?
When we were tearing down a wall in the kitchen, we also found a pink pair of women's underwear and some heineken bottles. We just laughed it off. But maybe we shouldn't have?
Why is pink women's underwear hidden in our ceilings?
