Silverstein Petition to Ban Sale of Assault Weapons in Illinois

Long-time gun safety advocate State Senator Ira Silverstein (D-Chicago) has introduced a measure to address the sale of assault weapons, such as the AR-15, that have been used in countless mass shootings in America.

Senate Bill 3297 will make it illegal to sell assault weapons in Illinois. The legislation spells out which weapons are included in the definition of assault weapons and also includes the sale of so-called “large capacity ammunition feeding devices” of more than 10 rounds in a...

Senate Bill 3297 will make it illegal to sell assault weapons in Illinois. The response I got from Sen. Durbin:

    Dear Mr. Kastigar:

Thank you for contacting me regarding gun violence and access to guns in our country. I appreciate hearing from you, and I share your concerns.

Over 30,000 Americans are killed by guns each year, and this violence takes a devastating toll on families and communities. I support sensible gun safety laws that will help reduce the number of gun deaths in America. I support measures such as universal background checks to keep guns out of the hands of convicted felons, mentally unstable individuals, and domestic abusers. An overwhelming majority of Americans know this is just common sense. I also support efforts to crack down on illegal gun trafficking and straw purchasing, and to limit the civilian use of high-capacity ammunition magazines that have been used by mass shooters to cause enormous harm.

We can and must do more to keep guns out of the hands of those who would misuse them, and we can do so while protecting the right of law-abiding citizens to use guns in a responsible and legal way for sport, hunting, and self-defense. My wife and I grew up in families of hunters. We know the rite of passage when a parent takes his child out into the woods and teaches him or her to shoot. The hunters I know are good people who love the sport and hate the people who use firearms to terrorize and kill.

Gun violence is a complicated problem, and there is no one solution that will stop all the tragic shootings. Reducing this violence will require dedicated efforts by families, community leaders, law enforcement, employers, faith leaders, and elected officials to prevent guns from falling into the wrong hands and to address the conditions which create violence. Unfortunately, in recent years common-sense legislation to prevent gun violence has been blocked in Congress by well-funded political organizations. But I’m not giving up. I will continue to work to ensure the federal government helps address violent crime in our communities.

Thank you again for contacting me. Please feel free to keep in touch.

1. I’ve looked at crime reports for the area and there are definitely incidents but it doesn’t seem like the area is ravaged in crime - do you feel safe walking/parking at all times of the day? Obviously won’t be coming home too often in the middle of the night but still something to consider. I do a lot of walking/running in the middle of the day which is also something on my mind.

2. How is parking for you? I see most of it is permit parking but still looks busy. Also, how is parking for guests?

3. What do you love best about the neighborhood?

Thank you so much!

    Part 1

As Gallup noted in its analysis, changes in public opinion on firearms after high profile firearm-related crimes “have tended to be temporary.” And while the analysts were unwilling to rule out the possibility that Parkland could represent a “turning point in the gun debate,” they had words of caution for those who insist it already has been. “The fact that mentions of guns dropped among both Republicans and Democrats, and at nearly equal measures, could pose challenges for the continued viability of this topic as a national issue,” the analysis concluded.

In a national poll conducted by Quinnipiac University during Feb. 16-19, 66% of respondents supported stricter gun laws in the U.S., a record high for the Quinnipiac poll, with 31% in opposition to stricter laws. Less than a month later, during Quinnipiac polling conducted during April 6-9, the percentage of overall respondents supporting stricter gun laws had fallen 10 points, to 56%. Opposition to stricter laws had also risen 8 points, to 39%.

A major theme of the post-Parkland activism has been that the youth vote will finally sway national politics in favor of gun control. But that narrative also took a hit with Tampa Bay Times report on Wednesday, which indicated that all the drama is not translating into increased voter registration among teenagers and young adults.

“Across six of the seven largest counties,” the article stated, “there were 4,500 fewer registrations among 16-25-year-olds compared to the same point in 2014. The largest county, Miami-Dade, could not provide historical data for registrations.” This trend held, according to the article, even in Broward County, where Parkland is located, with 2,700 fewer registrations in that age bracket.

    Part 2

Of course, this is not to say that America’s gun owners can now rest assured that their rights are secure. Several states buckled to the demands of gun control advocates in the immediate wake of the Parkland tragedy, including the traditionally Second Amendment-friendly jurisdictions of Florida and Vermont.

And as we reported last week, certain banks and other private businesses – some with ties to well-known gun control advocates – are attempting to marginalize and manipulate customers in the firearms industry and create a culture of condemnation around Second Amendment supporters.

The lesson, as always, is that the fight will continue. But gun owners can take heart that Americans have a way of reverting to respect for their time-honored liberties as emotions cool and reason regains a foothold in the public conversation.

Woman sexually assaulted in the brown line

A 20-year-old woman was standing on the platform at the Brown Line’s Francisco station on Thursday night when a man approached her, began kissing her and sexually assaulted her, Chicago police said.

The attacked happened around 10:40 p.m. at the station at 4648 N. Francisco Ave. in the Ravenswood Manor neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

The news said she wasn’t getting on a train but rather she was playing Pokémon Go....at 1040pm?!

  • Nancy Chicagoan

Was there no station attendant working?

  • Neighborhood Dad 27-year resident of North Center/St Bens/Lincol...

Nancy - good question. I’d assume so. But my perception is that the attendants are there to make sure everyone pays their fare and to assist those with questions, issues, accessibility needs, etc. I’ve never viewed them as having a security role.

Really going to miss Sears Store at Irving Park and Cicero.

Heard they're going to close in July this year.

  • nmm1 Chicagoan

I bought my leather wallets, gardening tools, mattresses, TVs & Blu-ray from Sears. I bought Dad’s clothes from Sears. It was hard to find reasonably priced casual well made men’s clothes until I went to Sears. I wanted to buy my stackable washer & dryer from Sears but they didn’t have what I was looking for. I have a friend who liked to buy her work blazers there. Sears did alot of things well. I will miss the department stores. It was a different experience.

  • I will miss Carson's very much too. I think part of the problem is people don't have a lot of extra money to spend.

Moving to Lawrence & Spaulding?

Went to this area this weekend to look at a room and I liked the place and the hood. I walked around a bit, seemed like a cool diverse area. I’m aware there’s gangs in the hood.. I’m not worried about that.. it’s Chicago..Just want to get your opinions on this area. I’m a young black male. If that adds anything. I saw virtually no blacks. Which is fine as well.

I live right around the corner on Leland and love the neighborhood! Lots of long-time residents who are very neighborly and invested in preserving a (multicultural) sense of community. Proximity to the brown line is great, too. Parking right now is a hot mess because of the construction, but in 5 years or so, when that's all done (j/k), it should be fine. ;)

But everyone's always been polite, no trouble-makers or weird stuff going on. Pretty diverse crowd - our upstairs tenants are black, FWIW. Safety-wise, it's a quiet corner of Albany Park. No visible shady stuff going on at night. It's still the city, of course... know your surroundings, don't be stupid, etc. My only beef with the neighborhood is the lack of green space. I'd love a decent park.

If you move in, shoot me a message and you can join us for a movie and pizza some Friday night.

Women's underwear?

Guys, we are demo-ing our basement, and we found these weird small plastic bags of women's underwear stuffed into the ceiling insulation. Do we have a Dateline situation in our ceiling? What do you think the police station would do if I walked in with underwear and told them I had concerns?

When we were tearing down a wall in the kitchen, we also found a pink pair of women's underwear and some heineken bottles. We just laughed it off. But maybe we shouldn't have?

Why is pink women's underwear hidden in our ceilings?

I am wondering if anyone has cameras that may have captured the vehicle around this time? In the morning I’ll be able to see the paint color. 3. Stop playing detective, it's not going to get you anything but frustration, been there done that.
    Good luck be safe

I'm so sorry this happened to you. I'm an insurance professional with over 20 years in the business. File the police report and get 2-3 damage estimates. Damage estimates are free except for your time and trouble. If you cannot contact and work out a way for the other driver to pay for the damage they caused to your vehicle either out of pocket or through their reputable insurance carrier, ie if the agent is someone like Insurance King, Talrow Insurance, Marvell Towers as opposed to State Farm, Geico, Progressive or another big company you may want to look to your own insurance company provided you have comprehensive aka other than collision coverage. Reason being non-standard insurance companies generally don't have the best claim service and payment record. If, however, you have liability only, check your policy to see if you purchased uninsured motorist property damage coverage which MAY, depending on the terms of your insurance contract, respond to the damage caused in this incident. I hope this all works out for you!

FOUND PUG

Hi, found Oscar wandering around Leavitt and Barry. Anyone know who he belongs to? He has a tag and I called the number on it but have not heard back from anyone. Thanks for any help.

Poor Pug. Either he's confused by the sitter and ran off, or the sitter is slacking. If I were the owner I would be freeking. Poor Oscar, but at least he's home.

  • Thanks for clearing that up......

Man Stops Home Invasion, Which Was Caught On Tape

A security camera was rolling just after 9 a.m. Monday as three masked men entered a backyard in the 3300 block of Warner Street and tried to force their way into the home.

Man Stops Home Invasion, Which Was Caught On Tape
CHICAGO (CBS) - Three home invaders are caught on tape and Chicago police are hoping the public can provide clues that lead to an arrest. In the video, they had a crowbar ready. However, as CBS 2's Roseanne Tellez reports, they weren't ready for the greeting they got at the door.

  • Scary. Wish the guy that answered had a gun and popped them all.

  • St. Eve Now is the only thing that's real.

The pathetic piece of human garbage with the yellow crowbar looks like he's about to break down in tears and/or s**t himself when they're greeted at the door. What a miserable group of subhuman scumbags.
