Moving to Lawrence & Spaulding?

Went to this area this weekend to look at a room and I liked the place and the hood. I walked around a bit, seemed like a cool diverse area. I’m aware there’s gangs in the hood.. I’m not worried about that.. it’s Chicago..Just want to get your opinions on this area. I’m a young black male. If that adds anything. I saw virtually no blacks. Which is fine as well.

  • Adrian A. Albany Park resident, educator, dog owner, parent

I live right around the corner on Leland and love the neighborhood! Lots of long-time residents who are very neighborly and invested in preserving a (multicultural) sense of community. Proximity to the brown line is great, too. Parking right now is a hot mess because of the construction, but in 5 years or so, when that's all done (j/k), it should be fine. ;)

  • Todd P Parent, Teacher

If you were on the north side of Lawrence, you were looking on my block. It's fine. Not a super-chatty block - people come and go from the multi-unit buildings and the condos on the corner, so I know few people by name despite being here 10+ years. But everyone's...

Not a super-chatty block - people come and go from the multi-unit buildings and the condos on the corner, so I know few people by name despite being here 10+ years. But everyone's always been polite, no trouble-makers or weird stuff going on. Pretty diverse crowd - our upstairs tenants are black, FWIW. Safety-wise, it's a quiet corner of Albany Park. No visible shady stuff going on at night. It's still the city, of course... know your surroundings, don't be stupid, etc. My only beef with the neighborhood is the lack of green space. I'd love a decent park.

If you move in, shoot me a message and you can join us for a movie and pizza some Friday night.

Really going to miss Sears Store at Irving Park and Cicero.

Heard they're going to close in July this year.

  • Jac Charlier AKA Citizen Jac Citizen-led solutions for better community

Lots of fun there as a kid...riding bikes in the parking lot, going in for the AC on the way back from Portage Park pool, and as I got older and got my first apartment, buying stuff there. I think about the people and the jobs they are losing. That's very real...

  • Now I hear that Carson's might close too.

For some reason the very reason I went to these stores was because of particular clothing and shoes I liked and for some reason they stopped carrying it. I liked the warm women's pants, the wide width shoes and the warm coats. It seems like there are all sorts of selections for men for warm comfortable easy care clothing. I hear Carson's might go out too. I like to see in person what I'm buying. But for us older gals who aren't a size 8-10 we like to be in warm in the winter and comfortable in the summer there is little to choose from. At least there were more boots for women that you could actually walk in the snow with. Yet they have all sorts of boots for men

Work on Grace between Mozart and Sacramento

Anyone have any idea what they are doing and how much longer it will go on? It's been a nightmare of early morning construction for weeks now.

  • Dreamer North Center

Sometimes I think they really have no idea what they're doing. Some of those pipes they're replacing are likely 100 years old and so are the manuals on them. Just imagine the trial and error. It just needs to end already.

  • This project started in 2011 in Chicago. I think it is supposed to wrap up in 2021. They are replacing the entire system in the city. I'm still hearing the water sucking machine from blocks away and they aren't done
yet on my block, they have to replace the parkway grass next.

Lost Cat

My cat, Quincy, has been missing for about 2 days. We last saw him near Barry heading south on Kedzie. Any info is appreciated!

  • So glad to hear Quincy is home! And safe and sound!
Those rascals! Always looking for an adventure, and sometimes they find one....!
They scare the bejeezus out of us when they're missing, but it's too hard to scold them when they're found, because you're just so darned relieved to have them back.
    Glad he's home.

Silverstein Petition to Ban Sale of Assault Weapons in Illinois

Long-time gun safety advocate State Senator Ira Silverstein (D-Chicago) has introduced a measure to address the sale of assault weapons, such as the AR-15, that have been used in countless mass shootings in America.

Senate Bill 3297 will make it illegal to sell assault weapons in Illinois. The legislation spells out which weapons are included in the definition of assault weapons and also includes the sale of so-called “large capacity ammunition feeding devices” of more than 10 rounds in a...

Senate Bill 3297 will make it illegal to sell assault weapons in Illinois. The legislation spells out which weapons are included in the definition of assault weapons and also includes the sale of so-called “large capacity ammunition feeding devices” of more than 10 rounds in a single magazine, belt or drum.

If you share Sen. Silverstein's concerns about gun safety in our state, particularly in light of the mass shootings in Florida, Texas and Las Vegas, please provide your contact information to stay updated on this legislation and other gun safety bills the senator sponsors. Thanks.

  • It is disconcerting that the disingenuous anti-gun advocacy movement deliberately sacrifice truth to advance their agenda. They value agenda more than they value truth. The tactic of prevarication, employed to achieve their objective, is best summed up in a quote. "Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it." Women's underwear?

Guys, we are demo-ing our basement, and we found these weird small plastic bags of women's underwear stuffed into the ceiling insulation. Do we have a Dateline situation in our ceiling? What do you think the police station would do if I walked in with underwear and told them I had concerns?

When we were tearing down a wall in the kitchen, we also found a pink pair of women's underwear and some heineken bottles. We just laughed it off. But maybe we shouldn't have?

Why is pink women's underwear hidden in our ceilings?

  • Thank you eyeinthesky, that is helpful.

It just occurred to me that they also had a large freezer in the garage when we first looked at the house..

..but they also owned a restaurant..

Chicago man freed from prison, given $25 million. He spent his second chance rebuilding his old gang
The top was down on Thaddeus Jimenez's shiny Mercedes convertible and opera music blared on the stereo as he and a gang associate drove around Chicago's Northwest Side looking for someone to shoot. Just three years earlier, Jimenez had won a staggering $25 million verdict for his wrongful murder conviction.

  • He has 8 more years to go in jail for federal gun charges , but would not be surprised if he's out by 2020 for good behavior, then he'll face state charges for shooting the other pillar of the community whom I'm betting will refuse to testify against him for fear and he'll get paroled for another 5 years or so until he does something stupid again.

  • Fortunately his 'victim' is suing BJ for his last pennies and will be giving sworn testimony that I'm guessing can be used by prosecutors?

I hate parking my car on Wilson because I dread getting my car side swept and of course at 2:30 am today I heard a bang and my car alarm go off. I didn’t get to see who did it in time but a neighbor came out and said they went west towards Pulaski on Wilson. This happened at St. Louis & Wilson. I am wondering if anyone has cameras that may have captured the vehicle around this time? In the morning I’ll be able to see the paint color. I also found this in the street, it’s a long shot but maybe someone knows what kind of car it belongs to. It’s snowing but it isn’t that slippery to cause someone to do this.

  • 1. File a police report.
    2. Contact your insurance agency, scoop out $500 deductible (easier said than done) and get your car back and fixed in a couple of weeks.
    3. Stop playing detective, it's not going to get you anything but frustration, been there done that.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. I'm an insurance professional with over 20 years in the business. File the police report and get 2-3 damage estimates. Damage estimates are free except for your time and trouble. If you cannot contact and work out a way for the other driver to pay for the damage they caused to your vehicle either out of pocket or through their reputable insurance carrier, ie if the agent is someone like Insurance King, Talrow Insurance, Marvell Towers as opposed to State Farm, Geico, Progressive or another big company you may want to look to your own insurance company provided you have comprehensive aka other than collision coverage. Reason being non-standard insurance companies generally don't have the best claim service and payment record. If, however, you have liability only, check your policy to see if you purchased uninsured motorist property damage coverage which MAY, depending on the terms of your insurance contract, respond to the damage caused in this incident. I hope this all works out for you!

Man Stops Home Invasion, Which Was Caught On Tape

A security camera was rolling just after 9 a.m. Monday as three masked men entered a backyard in the 3300 block of Warner Street and tried to force their way into the home.

Man Stops Home Invasion, Which Was Caught On Tape
CHICAGO (CBS) - Three home invaders are caught on tape and Chicago police are hoping the public can provide clues that lead to an arrest. In the video, they had a crowbar ready. However, as CBS 2's Roseanne Tellez reports, they weren't ready for the greeting they got at the door.

  • Scary. Wish the guy that answered had a gun and popped them all.

  • St. Eve Now is the only thing that's real.

I'm having a small surgical procedure done under anesthesia and I need to find someone to pick me up. I don't have any family locally and no one else that is able to help. The surgery center will not allow me to use an Uber or taxi and want me to provide a name of someone they can call when I am ready to be released. I'm looking for services similar to these two (links below) but neither are in Chicago. I don't need any special car or services. With the size of the city, you'd think they'd have something here but I can't find anything. As I start to get older, I do worry that I'll need this more often. Any ideas are appreciated.
