Saving Parking Spaces. Wonder why it's hard to find a parking space?

Once in a while you see someone park in the middle of 2 spaces and then later come and bring another vehicle and move the first vehicle back to make room for the other vehicle. It's hard to find parking and then you have people saving spaces or parking their business trucks on residential streets or vehicles that have been left for weeks in the same spot.

  • The people two houses down use this little trick every day. And they have a garage. It's infuriating.

  • Jenn Albany Park since 2005

This is why I think the city should be painting those outlines on side streets you see on major streets to indicate where they should put their cars in the spots. There are way too many vehicles per household, and I think that is the real issue.

I'm all for the city to designate assigned parking spaces for people.

Hi all - I’m looking to move to Wilson/St. Louis and have a few questions for anyone who lives near there -

1. I’ve looked at crime reports for the area and there are definitely incidents but it doesn’t seem like the area is ravaged in crime - do you feel safe walking/parking at all times of the day? Obviously won’t be coming home too often in the middle of the night but still something to consider. I do a lot of walking/running in the middle of the day which is also something on my mind.

2. How is parking for you? I see most of it is permit parking but still looks busy. Also, how is parking for guests?

3. What do you love best about the neighborhood?

Thank you so much!

  • abcjs "quite a bit of crime and gang activity" ? "often hear gun fire"? Don't think great location for the train will trump those two items.

  • Thank you for your advice abcjs! I agree - the close proximity to the train isn’t of concern when I hear about a lot of gunshots! Thanks again...so helpful!

Really going to miss Sears Store at Irving Park and Cicero.

Heard they're going to close in July this year.

  • nmm1 Chicagoan

I bought my leather wallets, gardening tools, mattresses, TVs & Blu-ray from Sears. I bought Dad’s clothes from Sears. It was hard to find reasonably priced casual well made men’s clothes until I went to Sears. I wanted to buy my stackable washer & dryer from Sears but they didn’t have what I was looking for. I have a friend who liked to buy her work blazers there. Sears did alot of things well. I will miss the department stores. It was a different experience.

  • I will miss Carson's very much too. I think part of the problem is people don't have a lot of extra money to spend.

Women's underwear?

Guys, we are demo-ing our basement, and we found these weird small plastic bags of women's underwear stuffed into the ceiling insulation. Do we have a Dateline situation in our ceiling? What do you think the police station would do if I walked in with underwear and told them I had concerns?

When we were tearing down a wall in the kitchen, we also found a pink pair of women's underwear and some heineken bottles. We just laughed it off. But maybe we shouldn't have?

Why is pink women's underwear hidden in our ceilings?

  • Thank you eyeinthesky, that is helpful.

It just occurred to me that they also had a large freezer in the garage when we first looked at the house..

..but they also owned a restaurant..

Sears closing its last Chicago store
Sears is closing its last remaining store in Chicago. Employees at the store at Six Corners in the Old Irving Park neighborhood were told of the closure Thursday morning, spokesman Howard Riefs said in an email. The store will close in mid-July after a liquidation sale set to begin April 27.

Not a surprise to many but I think it's a surprise to the employees, unfortunately.

The last time I shopped there (a couple of months ago) I asked the cashier if they were closing and she said no.

I wish all of the employees the best!

I'm having a small surgical procedure done under anesthesia and I need to find someone to pick me up. I don't have any family locally and no one else that is able to help. The surgery center will not allow me to use an Uber or taxi and want me to provide a name of someone they can call when I am ready to be released. I'm looking for services similar to these two (links below) but neither are in Chicago. I don't need any special car or services. With the size of the city, you'd think they'd have something here but I can't find anything. As I start to get older, I do worry that I'll need this more often. Any ideas are appreciated.

  • They won't let you go home in a cab. This is just a fancy name for the same thing.

  • @Jamie, most cab drivers will not get out of the car and go to a doctors office to pick up a fare. a car service with a professional driver will.

After putting up with this for 2 years, I am done. The neighbor across the alley from me blocks the alley 1-2 days per week with what appears to be a car repair business. Multiple cars get parked in the alley behind my garage and make it a pain for me to leave my house. Incidentally, I work from home but have to leave frequently in my car for my business. Sometimes the people working on the cars have been nice and move the cars so I can get out but last year one of the guys yelled at me for trying to back out of my own garage ( I am a young professional woman). At times, I have been late for appointments due to having to wait for these cars to be moved. Now I hesitate to even bring my trash out to the alley when these people are back there. Just looking for advice on what I can do or who to call. I hate to be “that” neighbor but I am done playing nice. However, I am afraid that if I call the cops, these people will retaliate against me.

  • Tas Mania--you are in the same dreamland as trump when he says he thinks he would walk into a school, unarmed, and save the students from being shot.Delusional.These things are easy to say as long as you are not doing them.

  • yeah displaying a yard implement, no matter how legal it is, in the manner tas is describing would constitute a threat of physical violence. The axe is "legal" until it is used in an incredibly stupid and menacing way as a means to resolve a conflict.

Of course, the OP would never take this ridiculous suggestion seriously, and I'm hoping tas mania doesn't either.

Filming at Bernard & Lawrence

I didn't see this on any of the notices posted on the 33rd ward Facebook page, but there was a crew on Bernard & Lawrence and they were filming right in front of the Post Office at 4749 N Bernard St. The Post office was closed due to the filming.

The Bernard street was also blocked at Leland.

It also smells heavy of fire in the surrounding area.

Apt near Kedzie Ave and Irving Park Rd.

I have found a great apartment near Kedzie Ave and Irving Park Road. Before I pursue for a tour, how is the crime rate, night life, shopping, etc?

Thanks

Shopping - you're not terribly far from the Jewel at Elston/Kedzie, plus the Cermak Market on Kedzie. Could be worse off for sure.

Night life? Depends what you're used to & enjoy, I guess. I like Fuller's basically right on that corner as a solid dive bar with local bands on the weekends. Lizard's a couple blocks down Irving will also have bands sometimes, and Serbian Village has a jazz jam on Monday nights that I've been intending to check out. Then you've also got Christina's at Kedzie & Grace with $3 pints of Guinness and very-late-night karaoke on the weekends.

    Best of luck!

Looking for an architect to draw garage plans.

Hello! I’m having a hard time finding an architect to draw up plans for a detached garage I want to build on my property in Avondale. Does anyone have any reccomndations of architects I could reach out to? I’m looking for someone with a solid understanding of how accessory structures like garages are permitted and governed by the city.
Thank you!

Litter at the Plaza

What’s up with the overflowing trash cans in front of ALL the businesses in the Stripmall/plaza on Leland and Pulaski. The one with the Spincycle. Trash completely covers the interior corner patch of grass by the daycare and building up around the base of the trash cans. It’s it the individual business owner’s or the property owner’s responsibility to pick up trash? Who do we call as a significant amount of it is blowing off property into the neighborhood

Let's get something done about guns

Limit the magazine size to 3 bullets - after that, a reload is required.

Require sales registration on all gun sales, including sales to relatives.

Require background checks and registration for all gun sales, ownership transfer and/or purchases.

None of this threatens to take away guns. None of this violates the letter and the spirit of the 2nd Amendment.

Bob your lack of knowledge is why people like you should not be allowed in the gun debate. Your are like the rest trying to ban guns with know knowledge about them. Please go to the back of the line and come up when you actually know something other than what you read.from the media

And how do you expect criminals to follow the law when normal citizen can’t follow the law by not driving and using cell phones and I’m sure you have done it bob. So tell me how that 3 bullet law will work. People don’t follow basic laws you expect criminals to

Albany Park Runners Club

Currently forming a neighborhood running club. Initially planning for Saturday morning runs to begin in mid April. Initially planning 2-3 runs per month. Moderate pace & distance, with a goal of accommodating a wide range of abilities. The goal is to meet neighbors & explore local parks. Runners know how to operate solo, but don’t always get chances to run with others…especially without having to travel to another neighborhood.

Join here if you want to receive invitations to group runs.

'The Loop' sold to Christian broadcasting company
CHICAGO -- One of Chicago's longest running and legendary rock stations is about to go away. "The Loop" WLUP 97.9 FM has been sold to the Educational Media Foundation, a non-profit Christian broadcasting company. According to Robert Feder, the classic rock station will flip to a noncommercial Christian music format under it's K-Love brand, currently heard on a string of suburban radio stations.

Well, darn, Chicago is losing a part of it's ambiance. Well, I guess there is always 97.1FM The Drive, and 94.7FM WLS, but Spotify is going to get more use now. Besides every time i turned on 97.9 as of late, it was always playing a Queen song. :)

WNUA launched March 3, 1987 and went off the air in 2009. I recently streamed a station whose playlist is much like WNUA and great memories flooded back (The Wave - Smooth Jazz - Radio[dot]com; khjz).

While it lasted WNUA was a 'Smooth Jazz' favorite. I was among those who won scads of phone-in contest prizes; catered parties and overnight stays at some of Chicago's premier hotels, WNUA CD Samplers, Sunday Brunch w/Rick O'Dell at Hotel Nikko, and entry to concerts and music appreciation parties from The Cotton Club to World Theatre to Andy's Jazz Club to The Vic.

The satin-smooth voice of Danae Alexander was perfectly paired with "Lights Out Chicago" in the evenings. And the Ramsey Lewis Morning Show was a great way to start workdays. Thankfully there are other great Chicago Radio stations, but WNUA held a special place for its many loyal listeners.

I thank WNUA for the many artists it introduced to me that I might have otherwise missed, including: Ottmar Liebert, Dianne Schuur, Christopher Franke, Dave Koz, and many others.

Gunshots?

Just wondering if anyone heard 3 gunshots around 6:25pm on Tuesday evening?
I live on N. Central Park Ave in between Ainslie and Argyle. I have no idea where they came from. I was sitting in our front room and heard them and then probably about 5 minutes later, I did hear some sirens in the distance, but also could not tell where they were coming from. And I *did* call 911. I honestly wasn't sure if it was fireworks or not, bc of the warm weather today, but in my opinion, it's better to be safe than sorry. :-(

  • Andrei Nobody The Firmament is Real.

I'm on Monticello and Ainslie corner. Yeah it happens a lot in our area. Good you called the cops. I have been seeing police in our area more lately. My new neighbors must be "thrilled" with the area.

  • I'm at Drake and Ainslie and saw a group of people running from the intersection right after hearing the shots. So I think it was right there and definitely gun shots. I also called 911. At least 4 different police vehicles came and looked around/circled the block for about 20 minutes.

Bird Calling

I am by no means a John Audubon, or a birdwatcher. But I noted a different birdcall over the din from the usual chirps, twitters, whistles, chortles, caws and tweets, this almost sounds like a larger bird of prey, different from crows and ravens, louder with a reedy shrill to the HARRRWWWWWW noise it makes. I want to saw hawk or falconish, but the bird remains sight unseen since I’m comfortably ensconced in my bed. With this warmer weather and longer daylight time, I am not surprised but does seem a little out of place for the neighborhood. Maybe I should break out the old DSLR and do a little birdwatching
