Ring Wi-Fi Doorbells

Has anyone installed the new Ring Wi-Fi enabled video doorbells? They look really cool. Was just wondering how easy they are to put up and how well they work with your phone.

I once had an ATT technician drilling through the side of my 1899 Vintage building without my permission. Yep, he was using a huge drill bit and had permanently damaged my vintage brick. It was already too late, as I stopped him while he was caulking the first and second holes....yep, he lied and said that he didn't need the building owner's permission because the tenants permission was all that was required...WTF!!

Winter overnight parking ban starts today on Foster, Kedzie and Milwaukee Ave

No parking from 3am to 7am on Foster (between Clark and Cental), Kedzie (Irving Pk to Bryn Mawr) and Milwaukee (Cental/Foster intersection to downtown).

You're looking at $60 ticket plus $150 towing fee. This is regardless of snow or not. Technically it started early this morning and I'm sure there are some unhappy drivers today.

Also, on most of the major roads, i.e. Lawrence, Peterson, Kimball, Montrose you're subject to a ticket/two if there is two inch of snow on the ground, regardless of day/time. So beware.

  • Mute Mute Me

Can we get cars parked in other tow zones towed?

  • Bob Kastigar 15 Years North Park, bike rider, retired

Remember the color ditty to read the signs:

Red and White, no parking overnight
Red, White, and Blue, no parking after two (inches).

Very persistent scammer (Energy Company) on Monticello

Watch out neighbors! I just had a ridiculously persistent Direct Energy (I think) scammer come to the door. I said I was not interested and did not open the door. He wouldn't leave my porch and kept telling me I needed to update my records to keep my service. Wouldn't leave even after I threatened to call the police. I went to get the phone to actually call them and he took off and was gone before I could even call.

Don't open your door to this guy and don't engage. Very persistent and the message is likely confusing for some as he was insisting on me verifying my gas and electric bills to continue my service.

  • These Energy Company scammers pretend they need to SEE your bill. A true service company has its clients' contact phone# & mailing information. No one should EVER open their door to strangers calling; an entry door is a defensive line. Police reports cite some home invasions involving a ruse to get people to open their door (gas leak, fire, etc.), then the offenders forced their way inside the homes.

Will ComEd move an eletric pole in alleyway?

Hi Neighbors - I moved into a new SF home in Albany Park about two years ago. I have a two car garage and while one spot is easily accessible the other spot has to be 'navigated' because of an electric pole that partially blocks access. I heard from neighbors that this electric pole was moved a few years ago when the electric company was doing work. Apparently the previous home owner didn't complain or try to intervene. Now that...

I heard from neighbors that this electric pole was moved a few years ago when the electric company was doing work. Apparently the previous home owner didn't complain or try to intervene. Now that it's my house, it's my problem. I've tried to contact ComEd to move the pole but don't know where to start (or should I contact my Alderman instead)?

Has anyone had a similar situation and if so will ComEd move the pole? This seems to be their mistake / error and they should have known better than to block garage access. Appreciate any thoughts.

David

  • I'd start with ComEd. Even if they agree to move it, you'd have to pay for the expense of moving it and it won't be cheap.

Scammers at work

Watch out for these 2 guys. They were going door to door on 3900 N. Whipple blk yesterday afternoon saying they were rep's of Peoples Gas and ComEd. They were trying to get people to let them inside their houses. When they got to Byron and Whipple they vanished - probably into a vehicle so the police couldn't find them. Is this how people dress to do business nowadays?!

  • @ George - that was my thought exactly.

  • I don't care who they are I'm not allowing them in. No one needs to access your home for any reason

Icy sidewalks. Please salt your sidewalks.

Many sidewalks are very icy. Please also salt your sidewalks so people can walk on them without being afraid of falling. Please consider your neighbors, kids going to school, delivery people and the people that deliver the mail.

Cat Sitter Up Here?

Hi there...does anyone have any recommendations for a good pet/cat sitter in the Albany Park area?

  • Heather from Bow Wow Meow, or Marcia from Fur & Feathers. I found both through Yelp recently since I’ll be traveling for the holidays, and I love that they’re both in my neighborhood! Heather lives just down the street from me, actually! I feel like I found my local cat community, and that’s a good feeling. Marcia might have more availability than Heather... Or you could always check on Rover, they do cats too

  • Chicago Cowgrrrl proud Albany Park resident & Irving business owner

We started using Greer at Mamabear Pet Care a few years ago when we had elderly cats that needed regular medications.
    https://www.facebook.com/mamabeargreer/?timeline_context_item_type=intro_card_work&timeline_context_item_source=618259609&pnref=lhc
She was fantastic. Now that we have young cats, we've continued to use her because she's not only super knowledgeable and trustworthy, but she can relax when she's caring for our cats. She sends photos via text. She plays with the cats. She's a bit expensive if you have low maintenance cats, but if they need meds, she's your savior.

Loud "Boom" Last Night? Argyle and Central Park?

Did anyone hear a loud boom in the middle of night last night? I think it came from somewhere near Argyle and Central Park or perhaps further west. Thanks

  • ECM

Also sorry to say very loud music from car in same general area early this AM. Please call police about this kind of thing also. Anyone else hear this? Both very unusual.

  • Ellen K. From the far NW side and now back.

I heard a loud Boom but it wasn't a gunshot unless someone has a cannon. It startled me and then a lesser boom followed. It seemed like a car but I'd never heard that noise before.

I live by Pulaski and Irving so I get traffic noise from all over.

Windy City Playhouse

Two years ago someone posted about seeing a play at Windy City Playhouse. I checked them out and decided to buy a seasons pass. Every play I see there is better than the last. The prices are cheaper than down town at Goodman ( also had seasons pass there ), the seats are roomy & comfortable with a little table for your cocktail, there is free parking right outside. You can eat at Leader Bar or Pitchfork and walk over to the play. The acting is superb. The plays are all awesome. I just saw "Becky Shaw" tonite and loved it. if your into live plays at smaller venues check this place out. All around a great night out.

  • Been there once a while back, thoroughly enjoyed the experience & acting. I should go back soon again!

  • Nick in Irving Park Condo Owner

Chris Jones (Tribune theater critic) wrote that with "Becky Shaw" the theater looked to be hitting its stride as a neighborhood playhouse. He pointed out that some of their productions were pretty dreary in terms of subject matter. I was not enthusiastic about many of their early productions, but I look forward to the shows they have scheduled. My wife and I are eager to go and I'll be purchasing tickets.

About a month ago, I left for work in the morning and noticed that at night someone (or something) had placed a large chocolate chip cookie on the front doorstep of our home --it seemed placed (not thrown) because it was actually touching the door. The front gate was not locked, so figured it was either left by a wandering drunk vagrant who had decided to take rest on our doorstep during his nighttime travels, or perhaps had been placed there by an animal (though that seemed unlikely, since no part of it had been eaten). Weirded me out enough that I took note of it, but other than that, pretty much forgot about it.

This morning I woke up to find a large loaf of unsliced bakery bread (a little smaller than a football) on our back porch steps. This really weirded me out, because our gate was locked this time, and our house is surrounded on all sides by a 6-foot fence. Was way too big to have been carried by a squirrel/cat, showed no signs of having been bitten, nibbled or clawed. Nor, given the way porch is situated, could it have been tossed there from street or alley. Which means, some time between midnight (when we got home and entered via the back) and 8:15 a.m. (when I noticed it), someone climbed our fence, placed this strange loaf of bread on our steps, and departed.

Obviously, that’s a little disconcerting. Tried googling, and found this reddit thread (http://www.reddit.com/r/needadvice/comments/2qm1kh/does_anyone_know_what_leaving_bread_by_someones/) by someone who had experienced a similar thing, but which provided no further explanation. Suppose next step is to install some hidden cameras, but was wondering if anyone in the neighborhood has experienced a similar thing or had ideas as to what this might be. Little freaked out right now, would appreciate any alternative explanations that don’t involve a person climbing our fence in the middle of the night to leave some weirdness on our steps.

  • I have seen a couple of times where all sorts of bread is by the parkway of a tree at 2 different locations. The bread is broken up loaves of bread. I don't know why someone would put a bunch of bread at the base of a tree. I cleaned it up so rats wouldn't come. Why is someone putting break or cupcakes outside for animals to get?

  • George F in Ravenswood displaced New Yorker

I think it's a misguided, but well intended gesture at feeding squirrels, and birds. Ever see a rat and a squirrel fight over a piece of bread? Not pretty.

I also have UVERSE in my livingroom, and of course that's fine but that's coming from a different feed, and I refuse to pay them for a second box, since normally, all the channels work fine.

Just wondering if anyone else is having any issues, or if something is going on with their broadcast.

The window is on the rear part of our home, on what would have originally been the back stairwell that at some point was fully enclosed and extended the length of the home. I have no idea how old it is. The weird thing is that it has started to leak today, about three days after the rain stopped. Water seems to be dripping out from between the wood laminate wall covering and the frame. Not sure if it is coming through from the roof or what. Any names would be greatly appreciated!

On a side note I contacted one large company but they actually required all those named on the mortgage to be present in order to just give me a quote. I think I am capable of making a decision without my wife being present, as I know she would be as well. Not interested in a hard sell. Just a hard worker!

  • K in North Center longtime North Side resident

Just used these folks. Not sure of their work long-term, but they fixed a window that other window companies couldn't fix and/or couldn't replace -- or the replacement cost was $2,500.

Albany Park Dog Park

Has there ever been a push to get a dog park installed in Albany Park? Eugene Park and Jensen Park seem like they could accomodate one, and there are a lot of dogs in the area as well. With the slight uptick in the crime around this part of the neighborhood, perhaps something like this would be one way to bring the neighborhood together more, so collectively we can take back the neighborhood.

  • There is an active effort to get a dog friendly area built at Horner Park.

    https://hornerparkdogpark.org/

Dog parks not only need approval from the Park District, they have to be substantially community funded as well as maintained by volunteers. See the FAQ section for more details on this process - it’s not rapid.

  • The horner park group had all the money they needed they recently found out they would need to install turf in the entire area which just increased their costs. They are continuing to raise money. https://hornerparkdogpark.org/

I did some calling around to see if i could find out from the office of streets and sanitation and they could only tell me when there were supposed to go up. On a side note i talked to several city employees over the phone and everyone was suprisingly nice!
