So similarly, I’ll dimly see a Quaker abolitionist preaching the immorality of slavery followed by a Virginian proclaiming slave-holding his constitutional right. I simultaneously hear echoes of contemporary arguments about the Second Amendment and am depressingly aware of the futility of words, then and now, to head off violence.

For some issues, like slavery and guns, neither side can convert the other or fashion a livable compromise.

It’s like Abraham Lincoln said: A nation can’t be “half slave and half free.” Until Congress let it lapse in 2004, we did have a gun-control compromise: a ban on manufacturing assault weapons, like the AR-15 brought to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., in 2018.

Those failures, past and present, bring to mind horrific sights that haunt my bedtime hours. They flash by in rapid succession:

Parents and schoolmates recently weeping outside Santa Fe High School in Texas.

Mathew Brady’s photographs of corpses on Civil War battlefields.

Video of students and teachers evacuating a school in a drill preparing them for the eventuality of a school shooting.

In the somber light of day, I realize why politicians turned a deaf ear to the call for gun controls heard at massive demonstrations on March 24.

In America, guns have what anthropologists call “totemic” power. Guns are hallowed symbols akin to the Stars and Stripes. They command respect and get it — even in unlikely quarters.

My neighbors moved out about 3 weeks ago and decided to rent their house instead of sell. About a week ago, they put a Domu sign in their front yard. The house looked somewhat vacant, but they had left some pieces of furniture and boxes of belongings in the home that they were planning on selling or giving away.
The husband had left the back door unlocked on Friday afternoon so that his brother-in-law could pick up some items from the home. On Sunday morning, he stopped by the home to do some work and found a freshly showered girl (that he did not recognize) coming down the stairs.
She also had a bag in her hand of his wife's clothes. After an exchange, he heard footsteps running down the stairs and the girl and the other person fled out the back door.
He called the cops and they went through the house to see what was going on. They found that these people had cleaned, organized, and even decorated (all with my neighbors belongings that they had found while going through loads of boxes). They had made-up beds for themselves with cushions/sheets/pillows and even set-up a little night stand with a small table and lamp. He said they made it very homey. I guess they were making jewelry and had a little station set-up with wire cutters and beads.
The cops were shocked because normally squatters are doing heavy drugs in abandoned houses, but these people were cleaning, decorating, making jewelry, and showering. WHAAATTT?!?!
Is this not insane? I am so mind blown. And this happened next door to me without my knowledge!!! CRAZY!! I have so many questions about this whole situation. I guess I am posting here just to inform the neighborhood of the situation and maybe the off-chance that anyone has any intel or similar experience.
Keep your doors locked people. Don't advertise that you aren't home. And keep a good eye out for your neighbors.

Hopefully never bob. If it was to happen though, our “gun-loving friends” still wouldn’t blame the guns. They would in fact attack parents, mental health and liberals as a means to justify the fact that we have an ongoing, uncontrollable gun problem and infatuation in this country.

What terrifies me are not things that you can use common sense to protect yourself by, but what you cannot. Middle of the night break ins through AC units assaulting kids in Lincoln park. Assaults in Lakeview at 8:30 pm on a busy Saturday evening, getting robbed in Lakeview at gunpoint between 2 days cares at 2:30 pm in the afternoon. Its by far way worse than normal city life. Horrific.

One day after the House passed the Combatting Illegal Gun Trafficking Act (SB 337), 35 Democrats and Republicans in the Senate stood side by side to vote in favor of passing a responsible bipartisan policy that holds corrupt gun dealers accountable. It will keep thousands of illegal guns traced each year to Illinois gun dealers from getting into the wrong hands – 4,000 such illegal guns end up in our communities every year. You can see the roll call here.

Combatting Illegal Gun Trafficking Act (SB 337)
http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/billstatus.asp?DocNum=337&GAID=14&GA=100&DocTypeID=SB&LegID=100277&SessionID=91

The measure would require the Illinois State Police to certify dealers and enacts provisions to better record and track private sales.

Several key provisions are:
requiring certified licensees to make a copy of the buyers or transferee’s valid FOID card or ID and attach it to the documentation detailing the sale.
requiring employees to have annual training regarding legal requirements, identifying straw purchasers and responsible business practices.
requiring certified licensees to have their place of business open for inspection by the State Police and local law enforcement.

Now it’s Gov. Rauner‘s turn to do the right thing and sign this bill. Our children and families cannot afford another one of his vetoes. We’re going to need your help urging him to do his one job, to keep children and communities safe, by signing SB 337. Please click on the link below to call the Governor and sign the petition.

Bob, and therein lies the root of the problem concerning gun control laws. Allow me to take this opportunity to thank you for making and agreeing with one of my points. Enforcement of gun control laws has historically been lacking and penalties/punishment entirely too lenient, so why would you realistically expect yet another gun control law to be any different in terms of who it impacts, how it will be enforced, and to who it benefits? It is often said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome and that is precisely the trend with gun control laws. I have never been able to comprehend the mentality of the gun control movement ... well, that gun control law didn't work so let's just pass another one, ad nauseum! Like most of those before it, this law would only impact the law-abiding including gun stores, but not the criminal, street thug, and gang member. Not only do the feds have a poor enforcement and prosecution record, so does the city. Unlike you, I do not hold out hope that the state will fair better. As concerns, that ATF, it os in serious need of oversight, a shakeup and a fix. Gun stores that knowingly and intentionally violate the law should be closed and the owner and employes prosecuted and sentenced like the common criminals that they are.

From the Wear Orange email:

Many lived in an area where shootings were a daily occurrence. But from an early age, the idea was that if we avoided certain areas at certain times, we'd be ok. We were wrong. While walking his girlfriend home one night in 2011, my 16-year old brother Jose was approached by two men, and was shot 15 times. I remember that night vividly. I was in college upstate when I got a call from my younger brother, telling me that Jose had been shot. A few hours later, my sister confirmed what I already knew in my heart: that Jose had died.

The effects of Jose's shooting left me in a state of shock. I withdrew from school and lived in a state of numbness. It wasn't until nearly a year after Jose's death that I was able to get my life back. I even got back into school — and I did this to honor his memory.

And that's what Wear Orange Weekend is about. It's a way for the millions of gun sense advocates to honor the lives of victims and survivors of gun violence. It's a way for hundreds of thousands of Americans to demonstrate their strength at events across the country, in cities and towns large and small, and online as we all work towards a future that's free from gun violence.

I wouldn't wish the pain of losing someone to gun violence on my worst enemy. It affects all of us, and there is much to be done if we're going to end it. I want people to understand that gun violence does not have to be a norm and we have to do everything we can to fight it.
