Hi All -
I am desperately trying to get this info out!

Last Tuesday (the 19th) around 1pm I witnessed what looked to be animal abuse in the area by (what I think) a dog walker. I love dogs, especially Golden Retrievers so this was definitely unsettling. As I look back, I definitely should have called 311 or atleast said something but did not want to cause any more issues.

This happened at the corner of Oakley & Addison. The (presumed) walker came down Oakley towards Addison, away from Waveland, at this point the dog laid down and the walker kicked it a few times. The dog then got up and they crossed over Oakley where the dog laid down again and the walker continued to kick the dog. They then walked down Oakley towards the school/Waveland.

I tried to follow them in hopes of seeing where the dog went to stop by later and inform the owner but unfortunately ran out of space/time and had to get to work.

If you know this dog or the owner, I strongly suggest showing them this video so this doesn’t happen again.

Happening all over the city! And they love CR-V's :( It's terrible! So sorry this happened to you. I've heard there is something you can put over the converter to prevent it from being stolen. Ask your mechanic.

Lincoln Ave Jewel – Long Delays at Checkout

Anyone else notice that the checkout lanes at the 4250 Lincoln Ave Jewel have become ridiculously long over the last several months? I’m not complaining against any one individual working there. Just making the observation that the lines have been getting unacceptably long no matter the time of day. Recently waited over 10 minutes at 7am on a Tuesday. This store just never seems to have enough people working the front. Not sure if others have noticed the trend, or if I’ve just been going at really bad times.

Male Tabby Cat Found

I came across this little guy near the Cullom/Paulina intersection who seems too friendly to be a stray. Taking him into the vet later to see if he is chipped but wanted to post on here to see if anyone recognizes the little guy.

He's not fixed, has 3 white paws, under 1 year old and extremely friendly.

  • I hope you find the owner! He looks like a real sweetie

A dozen obnoxious teen boys on bikes at Leavitt & Berteau at 1 am

I know it’s summer break but I really wish people would keep track of their teenage kids...there was a huge gathering of loud boys on bikes at Leavitt and Berteau from midnight til
1am on Monday night. They were blocking the intersection, physically fighting each other, and screamed profanity at people who told them to quiet down...happy to call the cops next time if people can’t control their teens and keep them home late at night...

  • Megan, from my understanding if you call 311 in this situation they would tell you to call 911. 911 is for emergencies, yes, but 911 is also for situations that are happening NOW and require someone to respond. So this is a situation where 911 should be called, not 311, even if it isn't an emergent situation. At least that is my understanding from reading EveryBlock for several years. 311 is for situations that don't require immediate attention.

  • Thanks for your reply, Maria. That makes sense. I’ve called 311 to file noise complaints a few times, all while then noise was still happening. They only transferred me to 911 one of those times (when the kids were playing in a construction site) and took down all the information for the other 2 times. The police didn’t respond to any of my calls from what I saw or heard. Just seems like a waste of emergency resources to me but google confirmed you to be correct. Thanks!

Did anyone lose their pet parakeet?

Spotted a small white and blue bird (parakeet?) in the bushes next to the Coonley Elementary School playground (Leavitt between Irving Park and Cuyler) this morning around 7am. Hope he/she finds their way back home!

  • Poor little guy

  • Parakeet update: spotted him again this morning in exactly the same place. This time he seemed to be hanging out with a gang of sparrows so at least he's got homies now.

  • oh nooo! I believe someone in my building has parakeets (on Berteau & Leavitt so not far from Coonley)...I will try to ask them. Poor little birdie

They stated that they talked to the building’s owner who said that we have a leak in our unit. They followed us to our door, though I wouldn’t open it until they stopped insisting that we had a leak and they needed to enter. They went away. One was bald and wearing a hot pink shirt. I believe the other was in green. Both had the Chicago accent and were muscular build.
This happened near Conley ES. If anyone has had a similar experience or had a legit leak and these men were at the wrong address, please let us know!

  • yes, pu-leeze file a report.

if you don't, it's like it never happened.

  • Please always call the police, even if you don’t know for sure what is going on. Because your call to the police can result in less crime in our community.

North Park Elementary School's three-week program, Summer's Cool, fills the gap between the end of school and the start of summer camps and other commitments, making the transition to summer easier and less stressful for families.

Here's how it works: Mondays and Fridays are spent at both local parks and North Park Elementary, with kids participating in fun activities like arts and crafts, magic shows and water games, while Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays are for field trip adventures. “We do three field trips a week to different places around the city, and [the destinations] change every year,” says Katie Ekstrom, who has been heading up the Summer's Cool program for the last three years. This year will feature visits to the Brookfield Zoo, Funtopia, the Shedd Aquarium, a mini-golf course and more.

While the activities might be different from a typical school day, the staff is made up of familiar faces: Ekstrom runs the program with a team of North Park teachers, with the ratio of teachers to students ranging from 1:6 to 1:10, depending on the day's activities.

The program is open to students going into 1st grade through 9th grade (there's a separate junior Summer's Cool program for pre-schoolers), and older students often serve as junior counselors.

According to Ekstrom, the program benefits students in several ways. “We spent a lot of time outside, which is important for getting kids away from screens,” she says. "Parents like it because it gives the kids something fun and constructive to do, and kids like it because they can be with their friends.”

If you or someone you know is looking for a *permanent* part time position (it's not the kind of position that can handle a revolving door), I'd love to talk. Here are the particulars.

Hours are Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays 10am to 4pm, Fridays 9:30 to 3:30. These hours are not flexible. The pay is $15 an hour, but enabling my business to grow and thrive will enable an increase in pay and room for growth in the job.

I'm looking for someone energetic who knows Mac really well, especially Word for Mac, has a steady hand, patience for occasionally tedious work while able to pay steady attention to it, and also up for the challenge of detailed work with a lot of responsibility. A background and interest in marketing is helpful but a marketing degree is not necessary. I need someone experienced with social media, including blogging and Pinterest. The person must be reliable (I can't afford to have someone who regularly has to call unable to come in), responsible, competent, attentive, efficient and detail oriented. Email only please, skin911@daniela.com.
