Welles Park Dog Park?

Thinking Welles Park needs a dog park or signs can't let your dog off leash and someone to ticket. Every morning on baseball diamonds and today we have a party of 5 dogs off leash with owners chatting. Was hoping to cut through park but will go around.

  • I couldn't agree more Cubs. My dog is always on a leash and I deal with this at Winnemac park regularly. Dogs off leash approach my dog as I'm walking him and if they run up to us, he feels threatened. (His eyesight is not great anymore). I would much prefer there were a fence around the unofficial dog park that's formed there so we all can enjoy the park.

  • The police don't always coordinate with the Park District management. This problem has to be addressed with the park supervisor. If you don't know who that is, go to the Chicago Park District website and look it up or click on CONTACT US on the home page and leave your complaint there.

You can either donate and sponsor a bench for a neighbor (either someone you know or someone who has requested one) or get one for your own parkway.

These benches are intended for the parkway or other public spaces to encourage walking and offer people a place to rest as they go around the neighborhood.

Our goal is to build 15 benches. If you would like to help build the benches please come to the work group Sunday May 20th at Waters School. All ages and abilities are welcome. You can rsvp to info@forwardchicago.org or call 773-633-8312. Please come support this project - thank you!

Shooting at BP gas station at Montrose and Kedzie

I live directly behind the BP gas station (I can see it from my kitchen window). At 11:30pm I heard about eight gun shots and in less than five minutes there were cops everywhere. My cousin who lives at Montrose and Troy may have seen the shooters running down her block/fleeing the scene. If anyone has info about what happened please let me know!

Possible casing of homes in Northcenter

When I asked him (through the window), "Can I help you?", he said he was "supposed to be meeting the landlord about an apartment for rent and was late". I asked him who he was supposed to meet. He said he didn't know the "guy's name" and so feeling like this was fishy, I asked him how much the apartment was renting for, he didn't know that either.

He was on the shorter side - 5'8"-ish with a slight build, was wearing a red plaid pattern long sleeve shirt, had pretty weathered skin with a tattoo (some kind of writing) above his left eyebrow, was missing several teeth, and was carrying a backpack.

I told him that I didn't know anything about any available apartments and he left with no issues, but the whole thing left me feeling like he was casing the joint, so to speak. FYI - he never rang my bell (don't know if he rang my neighbors). He came and went through the gangway to the alley.

According to my landlord, there was no appointment.
This happened on the 1900 West block of Belle Plaine Ave today (5/8) at 1:40pm.

  • Way. I did call them today and told them that I saw the article, and that it was the same man that I had reported to 3-1-1. They said they didn't need the info after the fact but reinforced that I should call 9-1-1 next time anything like this occurs (which I will do because admittedly the whole incident has been really unnerving).

That's good news and a succesful conclusion to an EB neighborhood watch support session. Sometimes we are surrounded with so much 'not normal' behavior that we start to think abnormal is normal. In the end common sense and perhaps primal instinct are first alerts over our compromised view of reality. But casing is casing no matter what time of day or colors. Theft is theft no matter if "the landlord said I could borrow it" or not. Good job 3Kranch!

Vine maintenance

Hi neighbors, we have a vine-covered building that we're trying to maintain. We don't want to completely get rid of the vines, but we would like them to stay healthy. Can anyone recommend a service that would help with this? It's a 3 story building and the vines go to the top. At the very least I'd like them to be trimmed away from the windows (they are murder on the screens!) but I'm thinking we'll need professional help.

  • Vines are like ladders for ants to crawl in your unit

  • If you have a brick building, vines are the worst thing you could do. Vines eat away at the mortar and tuckpointing. Can completely ruin the masonry over time. Be prepared for the expense of re-tuckpointing if you continue to allow vines to grow on your building.

Any other home owners out there have a problem with homeless on your property?

We have one person and he often has friends with him and they perch on the side of our building being noisy, drunk, foul language, littering, etc.

Aside from calling the police, what do you do? This is really a problem in the summer. Our house has become a gathering place for them.

He often hangs around Challenger Park, Irving and Sheridan and Montrose between Kenmore and Sheridan. He has a large cart.

Thank you.

P.S. Yes, we've tried talking to him - nothing works. He's scary, very hostile. Starts screaming and cursing.

  • Yikes. I wonder why you preface your question with "aside from calling the police"? I'd call them. Every. Single. Time.

Whats it going to take for you to get involved?

Neighborhood recommendations

Two family members are moving to Chicago and I'm scouting out neighborhoods for them to live in. They can't afford much but would like to buy a house. I am thinking about the Belmont & Central area, Hermosa, Mayfair and Albany Park because these neighborhoods are not too expensive (yet). My family members are Caucasian so I'm wondering how they would be received in those 'hoods. Dunning would be affordable and safe but there's poor transportation into the loop so that's out. Any suggestions or recommendations? Thanks.

  • Michael McDonough Resident of BelCragin

Something along Belmont would also work for you.The Belmont CTA buses run all night between Harlem and the Red Line.Great access to shopping too

  • Thanks, Michael. I was wondering about Belmont-Cragin for them. The home prices are low there but I don't know anything about the area. I will keep it in mind.

Massive New School Proposed On Montrose — Community Meeting Thursday @ 6pm

On Thursday April 26 at 6pm there will be a community meeting about North Park Elementary’s plan to build a massive 63,000+ square foot school at their current location. This is three times the size of their existing structure. A related plan to more than double the enrollment will also be put into place. The meeting will take place at 2017 W. Montrose. Please attend if you want your voice heard.

Here are the proposed plans:

A compromise should be worked out and it's very possible that the school put the biggest plan out there so that after negotiations, it scales down and ends up building exactly what they wanted to initially. They come off as "listening to the neighbors" which is great PR. That would also follow the Rahm/Chicago way of doing things.

I also don't think it's that simple to tear it down and make condos. Unless of course, the Alderman allows the zoning change for the new developer/owner. Currently it is zoned for a school and the playlots are zoned for single family homes that existed there previously.

To take your example further that if the school moves and a condo building comes in, that would actually help the tax base since those condos (also Transit Oriented Development which everyone seems to endorse now) would than add greatly to the property tax revenue to our neighborhood. Currently the city receives $0 from those prime city lots as the private school is tax exempt.

I am sure they would change the zoning if the alternative is a big empty building. I think those developers have a lot of leverage, right? It’s a good location for condos, near the EL. The businesses would like condos, I would imagine. I am at least 2 blocks away so I have less skin in the game, but I still prefer a school. I just feel it adds more value and it brings families into the neighborhood. I hope everyone is reasonable on all sides.
