Staubers Reopens as Lakeview Ace Hardware

I stopped in today to the old Staubers, which was sold to Lakeview Ace. The same staff folks are there, who have always been so neighborly and helpful. Just wanted you all to know they're back. I'm so glad. I'd much rather shop there than at a big box store.

Hazel + Junior?

I came home about 30 minutes ago (8:30PM) and couldn’t get through the intersection because of several squad cars blocking Junior. They didn’t have their lights on, but there were officers walking around, seemingly looking for something. Anyone know what’s going on?

Neighborly Litigation (Chadha v. NPES)

Many on this forum talk about litigating, be it for some unneighborly thing or other. Well, here is your chance to read the behind the scenes workings of the Chicago Way in its entirety (link below - get some popcorn and settle in) and VOTE.

This is the culmination of 7 years of attorney fees and a waste of our taxpayer-funded court's time/resources, in my opinion, of course.

Does anybody have an idea of when the Anytime Fitness on Rockwell will open? Their corporate website has no information.

I'm wondering the same thing. I bet it will be right after the holidays when everyone makes their new years resolutions and are ready to pony up for a membership that will only get used in January :)

Where to look for stolen jewelry?

My engagement ring (a family heirloom) was stolen from my apartment by a burglar, and I realize that it's probably gone, but I'd still like to do my due diligence to try and find it. I've been looking at Craigslist, ebay, and some resale sites (offerup, facebook market). The detective assigned to our case looked through the pawn shop database but no luck.

Any other suggestions.

    Thanks Mousie! great suggestion.
UPS left a package last night for my upstairs neighbor...
in the back yard! Good thing it didn't rain.

  • Good to know. Walking through the neighborhood a couple of days ago I saw packages on porches and on stoops all over the place. Several large packages were just leaned up against apartment building doors right on the sidewalk of a busy street. I'm amazed anyone gets anything they order!

CHIRP Radio will celebrate its FM launch with a party November 4 at Dovetail Brewery (1800 W. Belle Plaine Ave.). Ahead of the celebration, Chicago caught up with Campbell to talk about the new FM broadcast and what the future holds for this indie station.

You Can Now Set Your Dial to CHIRP, Chicago's Indie Radio Station
Shawn Campbell spent nearly a decade working at radio stations dealing with "large bureaucracy" before she decided to set out on her own in the summer of 2007. She recruited volunteers passionate about local music and indie media to join her, and Chicago Independent Radio Project, aka CHIRP Radio, launched its online broadcast in January 2010.

How to get a private cab or vehicle for a physically challenged senior?

She won't take the Pace bus for starters and its almost impossible to get her into our sedan as she screams when she has to dip down to get into the seat. Feels like she is falling.
Is there a private car or medicar that she can get into more easily - maybe the seat is higher?
She uses a rollator/walker to get around. She can barely walk and is almost blind.
We need to go with her down to medical appointments at Northwestern. She has a thing about riding with other people.
Thanks for any advice!!

  • Carole Ogden retired

She will easily qualify for Pace ADA Paratransit Service. It is a wonderful service for handicapped individuals and costs $3.00. Call their Help line at 312-663-4357. As with any service like this you may need to spend a little time getting to the right place to help you, but it is well worth it. They have all handicapped accessible vehicles with ramps etc.

  • Wow, this is great information, didn't realize any of this existed. Bookmarking for future needs. Thanks to all.

Heating elements under carpeting...has anyone had any success with this?

We are about to replace our carpet. I notice we have zero insulation (I will add that.) And, we want to heat our floors.

Has anyone here tried any rollout, low-voltage under-carpet heating elements? I see they are available but am curious effective they are under a thick pad and carpet.

  • I do not have an electric, low voltage product, but my concrete slab underneath my carpeting is radiant (hot water)

It's totally effective, the carpeting has no real ability to reflect the heat anywhere but up into itself.

Anyone else have water damage from that all day storm yesterday?

Our 100+ year old brick 6 flat - we live on the top floor - had a small puddle of water on a front room window sill this morning. 'Must have come in from the roof and then down behind the wall. Drat.
I wonder if it is an insurance issue? Anyone have a similar experience?
Thanks for any advice.

  • Hi Anne. We used Bral Restoration for the masonry on the front and roof (e.g., parapet wall). It was not cheap (I don't think anyone is) but I really trusted their opinion. With all the rain we had last week we didn't have a drop come in the house. Al Kristoffer is the owner of Bral - their website is http://www.bralrestoration.com/. Good luck - I know this is a very unfun way to spend a lot of money :)
