All those recent tax increases haven't improved Chicago's fiscal health

" In a report that City Hall won't like much, a Chicago-based watchdog group says hundreds of millions of dollars in recent tax hikes haven't done much to improve Chicago's woeful financial condition—at least so far.

Truth in Accounting, a somewhat conservative research group whose board runs the ideological spectrum, gives the city an F on its overall financial breakdown, saying each Chicagoan would be on the hook for $41,700 in unfunded liabilities if the city shut down tomorrow and had to reconcile its books—more than many people make in an entire year. Overall, it concludes that "Chicago finances (are) still in peril."

It’s crazy to think a neighbor next door parked his white car right behind our Car and did nothing. Not even honk at the men in our car. I’m sure every one on the corner block recognized that the men did not own th car in which they were braking into were not us. I know if we had seen some thing strange we would have done something to deter what was going on and Called the police. We all work hard to get what we need to live for our families and our self and be safe. Please let’s be mindful to each other with respect for one another. Keep your camera filming on your window, let’s work together to be safe of one another. See something strange in our neighborhood, or our car report to the police. God bless everyone, thank you.

One thing that must be abundantly clear is that you should never expect help from strangers. So many people freeze-up or, let's be frank, coward-up in the face of danger.
We must aim to be strong, train hard, and be self-reliant.
There are so many Youtube videos of violent attacks in public and the comments always say "But why won't anyone help???"
Yes, sometimes there's a hero around, but it's better to be the hero yourself.

  • So, being you have the break-in on video, can anything be done with that?

I understand that Bill Morton is running against your current alderman; reach out to him and see what his solutions are.

Which of Phill's many identites do you suggest he use when he asks for a meeting with the commander?

Just because a property is on a commercial street does not mean it has no responsibility to the public. Note that the architect (Axios) who designs other Toyota dealerships is too embarrassed by it to include it on his website.

Technically it follows zoning law because its a Planned Developmenf - BPD No 1275. The City Council approved a custom zoning désignation - ie mads a legal exception - because the dealwrship’s plan does not conform to the zoning that was previously in place. It s an abuse of the PD as a legal mechanism, not what a PD was designed for.

It also doesn’t confirm to the Chicago streetscape ordinance. Or the Western Ave streetscspe plan.

it’s sets am awful precedent for the way PDs are being used and mostly for what is acceptable to build within city limits.

Lost cat. North shore and campbell

Lost a mostly black and a little white cat named Bean. He is sweet though shy. He does not have a collar but does have a chip. Please message me should you see him.

Michael

  • There are two regular feral mostly black tuxedo like with white paws cats that frequent the 6700 N block of Campbell (between Pratt and Northshore).
I saw a cat fitting that description last night about 9:30. Not sure if it's one of the regulars or your kitty. I tried to engage with it but it hid in the bushes.

  • Michael, Did you find Bean? Can you post a picture. We've seen a cat similar to your description. She is in our backyard right now. Please post a picture, if you haven't found Bean yet.

It's late but not too late to start circulating petitions run in the March 2018 primary for state senator in the 8th district. Incumbents have gerrymandered districts and arranged primaries and petition qualifications to keep themselves in control. And we can see how well that has worked for them, but not us. If Robin is correct and a couple candidates are mulling a run, they should make themselves known now, so supporters can rally to their candidacies. Additionally, I suggest 8th Dist. voters consider the upside of electing a Republican in November 2018.

Snowless Winter Saved City $1M In Overtime, 260K Tons Of Salt Last Year

"The savings banked by the city because there was no snow for plow drivers to clear after hours while being paid overtime would have been greater if the city hadn't been hit by several "ice events," Williams said.

"Those can be more costly because you have to keep salting," Williams said."

Snowless Winter Saved City $1M In Overtime, 260K Tons Of Salt Last Year
CITY HALL - Last year's nearly snowless winter saved the city nearly $1 million - and 260,000 tons of road salt, Streets and Sanitation Commissioner Charles Williams told aldermen Tuesday. "We're ready for the snow," Williams said.

So much copying and pasting. Are you running for alderman?

  • Let's not rejoice too easily--the law of averages means that one excessively snowy and/or icy winter will consume all the savings and salt--and more! Predictions are for another relatively mild 2017-18 winter though. Yea, global warming!

New, higher phone taxes replacing beverage tax

Ok, folks. Collective outrage beat back the beverage tax; now let's see what we can do about this new grab on our money. This proposed outrageous tax will really affect everyone. Notice, there are no decreases in city spending.

Here’s How The New Cellphone Tax Will Affect You

  • MB

The Chicago cell phone tax is not a new tax. The amount of the tax is being increased. This Chicago tax does not replace the Cook County beverage tax. The city and the county are separate taxing bodies. Sweetened beverage consumers who own cell phones would have been subject to both taxes if the Cook County tax had not been repealed.

Poor Workmanship from Park District

Recently had the Park District come out and mark one of the Tennis Courts at Rogers Park for playing Pickleball. Two things that are bad about the job done, one bring they used white paint instead of yellow. The tennis lines are white so tennis players will complain that the extra white lines will confuse them. The other point is the lines are not even straight as you can see in the picture. Bad enough the courts are in need of serious repair but this just matters worse. The courts need to be repave and marked and the fence should also be repaired. New signs should also be posted indicating the courts are for Pickleball and Tennis usage.

The somber event that was intended to help our community heal was disrupted by protesters who scattered themselves around the crowd and began shouting over the words of scheduled speakers including a local minister who attempted to lead the people in prayer of love. CBS Chicago News reported that Jim Ginderske, who ran against (the Alderman) years ago, was among those who yelled, saying the police and politicians only want to solve the immediate crisis and not the problems that lead to it, such as closing a nearby mental health center and disinvestment in local public schools. Because of the guerrilla group's disruptive tactics the rest of the meeting was called off early sending many people home disappointed that they could not mourn without being disrespected. http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2017/10/17/rogers-park-community-rally-cut-short-cynthia-trevillion/

A friend who, along with me, signed a petition to repurpose the soon-to-be-vacant Northtown Library building on California, got some push back from a neighbor. The neighbor opposes repurposing the library building because “the space has very poor electrical capabilities and would need too much money to maintain.”

I know nothing about the electrical system at the library, and I am not advocating a conversion of the building into any specific use. I'm not opposed to conversion. I just don't know what would be involved, what programs would be housed at the converted center, what else the library or the space be used for?

I just don't know.

That's why I signed the petition: to encourage a public discussion, to persuade our tone-deaf alderman to hold a public meeting about what might be done at the site. Maybe my friend’s neighbor who opposes conversion is correct about the electrical system. Is the neighbor an electrical engineer or a contractor or a builder? Does the neighbor have any expertise to make such a determination? I’d like to hear what the neighbor says.

Or is the neighbor just reading from a script where the fate of the library building already has been decided by the alderman?

Why can't residents of the 50th Ward be asked for OUR input?

  • hopefully the building will be bought for private use and start paying taxes.
