I've heard that it has improved a lot, as in light years away from where it used to be (I'm relatively new) but it's still way below international Western standards. The effects of this littering pollution are extremely costly (clogged sewers, rodent infestation treatment, probably enhanced water treatment solutions, etc). We could prevent a lot of it with proactive measures for half of the money that we end up investing in remediation. We seem to score really low within the developed world. I found this video to share with local youth groups out there for awareness and inspiration.

We need to elect better public officials not the usual career politician crooks. Its their job to make ensure things such as waste management happen but if we keep putting the wrong guy for the job in office the poop rolls down hill on us.

Kodi, you're absolutely right but we live in a day and age in which people act on emotion rather than reason. That's an area in which other societies have shown more gray matter than us. But oh well, baby steps. Let's keep it local. I would go to every alderman meeting that involves discussions of budgeting and I would argue that this is a more serious issue than we think it is and that is having regrettable ramifications, so we should start thinking of redistributing funds. That might also be a good incentive for people to stop littering if it's going to cost them money or subsidies down the road. Of course the inebriated ones who can't even stand by themselves and are leaving trails of broken glass bottles won't change. Understanding what to do about that is beyond our capacity, but we can start a public conversation about basic fund allocations and hopefully have some kind of impact.

I basically know nothing about soccer per se but I'm fascinated by the social and political innuendoes attached to it. I'm sure it's the same for popular US sports but I grew up among soccer fanatics that I could never figure out so I'm still intrigued. I moved to the US in the 90s when the soccer culture was being gradually exported to the US. Back in the late 90s there was a group of wealthy German and Italian dudes in the Gold Coast who organised a bunch of dinner parties around major European League games. Now I'm exploring the trends in Albany Park. Great conversation starter on that block.

  • Sorry isn't that hard to understand. There are really just about 3-4 rules. Much less than any of the major sports here in the US. It's just that the MLS (our US soccer league) is pretty horrible. I enjoy watching our national teams play.

Greetings My Neighbors!

Just got this urgent appeal from a sister American Legion Post. I'm asking you to contribute by Wednesday, December 20 to the 2017 Toys-for-Tots Drive, The Drive is short 10,000 toys in two age groups: GIRLS Ages 10 to 13 and BOYS Ages 10 to 13. Toys received by this Wednesday are able to be delivered on time by USMC 2/24 (2nd Battalion, 24th Regiment).

Toys should be new, in the original packaging, and unwrapped. Please – no stuffed animals.

Here’s two ways you can easily contribute:

1) Drop off toys at any IHOPS in Cook County. For our NW area, here are the nearby locations:
IHOP SKOKIE, 9500 Skokie Blvd, SKOKIE, IL 60077
IHOP NORRIDGE, 7056 West Forest Preserve Drive, NORRIDGE, IL 60706
IHOP CHICAGO, 2818 W Diversey Ave, CHICAGO, IL 60647
IHOP CHICAGO, 4210 N Cicero Ave, CHICAGO, IL 60641
IHOP CHICAGO, 5929 N Lincoln Ave, CHICAGO, IL 60659

For other IHOPS, please log onto: http://www.ihop.com/ihop-locations.

2) Donate online to Toys for Tots:
http://chicago-il.toysfortots.org/local-coordinator-sites/lco-sites/local-donate.aspx

Your donated dollars will go a LONG way because the Marines have special buying agreements (big discounts) with the toy stores with NO shipping and NO sales tax! (Toys for Tots is an registered 501c3 charity. So your dollars are also tax deductible).

97% of your donation goes to providing toys, books and other gifts to less fortunate children. 3% is spent on support - principally covering fundraising expenses. Not one donated dollar goes to pay for salaries or any other manpower costs.

Questions? Please contact me at jac.charlier@gmail.com or via Nextdoor or just around the neighborhood.

Folks, we can do this...together. Thank you, in advance!

Suspicious black gentleman

Heads up folks. We live on the 4100 block of Francisco. We get a ton of deliveries during the Holidays and I have the drivers put them between the doors of my foyer and then close the door, it locks automatically. My son was walking home this afternoon and when he was a few doors down he saw a black gentleman walk up our porch and pull on the door. When he couldn't get it open he left. Sure wish it was me walking down the street!

Drilling is pretty much a necessity. The nice thing is that the include a drill bit for drilling into the mortar with every device.

As for the angle of the doorbell for cars being picked up instead of people, they do offer angled wedges that you can use to a shut the direction the motion sensor picks up to more effectively get the people, instead of vehicles.

Winter overnight parking ban starts today on Foster, Kedzie and Milwaukee Ave

No parking from 3am to 7am on Foster (between Clark and Cental), Kedzie (Irving Pk to Bryn Mawr) and Milwaukee (Cental/Foster intersection to downtown).

You're looking at $60 ticket plus $150 towing fee. This is regardless of snow or not. Technically it started early this morning and I'm sure there are some unhappy drivers today.

Also, on most of the major roads, i.e. Lawrence, Peterson, Kimball, Montrose you're subject to a ticket/two if there is two inch of snow on the ground, regardless of day/time. So beware.
