Greetings My Neighbors,

Memorial Day 2018 is almost upon us and with it comes a hope that you will take some time to remember all of our servicemembers (women and men) who have given the ultimate measure of devotion to our nation. We also remember and provide comfort to their families for whom the pain of the loss of a loved one continues on.

Ready to join with each other to do just this? If so, here are 3 ways you can be part of Memorial Day 2018, right here in our community. If you have questions about any of these, please ask - jac.charlier@gmail.com. I'll be at all three and look forward to seeing you there.

1) Chicago Veterans Ruck March - Friday, May 25 from 9 AM

No ruck needed. Volunteers welcome. Full information is here: https://chicago.everyblock.com/neighbor-events/may25-chicago-veterans-ruck-march-2018-8596131/

2) North Park Village Flag and Remembrance Ceremony - Sunday, May 27 at 10:45 AM
The names of all servicemembers of families present (any branch, any era) who have passed away will be spoken out loud. They do not need to have died in combat. Full information is here: https://chicago.everyblock.com/neighbor-events/may27-memorial-day-service-north-park-village-8653219/

  • Beezil dear....I don't proclaim my knowledge....it's not necessary for anybody to do so.....over and out.

  • ...and for clarification, my "moniker" is related to my former role as a block club president for 2.5 years. So, "Statute Informed?" Yes, I know city statutes and many I have downloaded. That's a necessity when you're dealing with building owners, complaining residents, businesses, construction crews, 250 club members, etc. If one needs info, then it's good to be able to direct him/her to the source.

LaBagh Woods offers great recreational, aesthetic and ecological value to the people of Chicago, and serves as a habitat for migratory birds and diverse wildlife. The privately owned, wooded property at 4357 W Bryn Mawr is a seamless addition to the forest preserve and contributes to the quality of life and property values that the families of Sauganash and neighboring communities enjoy.

We were dismayed to learn that in spite of strong community opposition, the City Council voted to rezone this land from POS-1 (Regional or Community Park) to RS-1. This will allow developers to strip this land of its trees and wildlife in order to construct single family homes.

We believe that to divest the people of Chicago of even a single parcel of forested land should be as unthinkable as privatizing a stretch of the lakefront. The parcel in question, though privately owned, provides great value to the community and the region as undeveloped open space. We therefore ask that you sign this petition to express your concern and opposition to development at this location. We further ask that you reach out to your elected City and County officials to voice your opposition to the development, and urge them to work with the community and the owner of the parcel to reach an equitable compromise.

The headline is misleading, the property may look like a forest, but it is not. It is privately-owned. You have no argument.

  • Bob Kastigar 15 Years North Park, bike rider, retired

The zoning change came about because it was threatened that the owner could sue the city if it wasn't re-zoned. The question that wasn't answered: what was the zoning when the property was purchased?

Another issue is river flooding. The property is adjacent to the Chicago River and will increase the drainage into the river. A massive, and expensive, Albany Park Tunnel Project was built just because of this flooding.

These young activists are indoctrinated political pawns of the anti-gun coalition. Their hearts are in the right place, but their heads are not. Their inflammatory rhetoric is laced with emotion rather than bolstered by rationality. Personal experience is not an argument. It is an emotional appeal. Mass shootings should be examined in terms of factual data, devoid of and emotional foundation of untenable false narratives. Anti-gun activists value their message more than they value truth. Their platform consists of egregious, disingenuous demagoguery rather than credible, logical arguments and evidence-based proposals to support their agenda. Anti-gun advocates often smear law-abiding gun owners with the gratuitous assertion that they have “blood on their hands” merely because they have an opposing point of view on gun control policy. Such an allegation is what it is … a duplicitous fabrication.

The prefrontal cortex is that part of the brain that puts the brakes on another part of the brain … the amygdala, the emotional response center. The prefrontal cortex is under developed until age 25. 14-18 year olds, with underdeveloped brains, should not define gun policy. After years have past these youngsters by, they become in touch with their inner adult and they look back in time, it will be interesting to see how they will view what and who they were in their distant past.

Looking for Kittens

I am trying to find two litters of kittens that mamas have moved! They have been seen on the 5300 blocks of Spaulding and Sawyer. They are both about 4-6 weeks old. If anyone knows where they could be hiding or has a sighting, please text me at 773 898 9899. I will catch them, assure they get into a no-kill shelter, and spay the mama cats so they don't have another litter. Please do not chase them or try to catch them yourself. I have the proper training and equipment.

Water fountain shut off?

From the Chicago Tribune:

"Using Gompers Lagoon on the city’s Northwest Side as an example, Cooper said the small path around the water currently had three stand-alone water fountains around a paved, circular path about a quarter-mile long. Currently, one of those three fountains falls in the group of 500 that do not have a problem with lead in the water. As of this weekend, it was being flushed; the two other fountains were turned off—and by Monday, had been removed.

Records show some fountains at Gompers Park registered lead levels of 75 and 50 ppb at testing."

There's a lot of traffic through the park; why not let the water run continuously to avoid the contamination?

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-met-park-district-continuously-flushing-water-fountains-to-keep-safe-lead-levels-20180514-story.html

Park District could shut off half of outdoor drinking fountains amid lead concerns
Thirsty? As the mercury climbs this summer, Chicagoans - including tens of thousands of kids enrolled in summer camps at city parks - will have hundreds fewer outdoor water fountains to rely on because lead testing once again has shown the city's tap water is tainted.

Parkway tree inspection?

Last fall the tree in our neighbor's parkway came crashing down in our yard during a storm. When we looked at the remaining stump we saw that it was dead and rotten straight through. The city removed the debris, but did not assist with our claim as the neighbor had never reported a tree problem to the city.

We have a similar tree on our own parkway that we have concerns about. Based on how it looked last fall, it isn't dead but it isn't terribly healthy either. Does anyone know how to go about getting the city to do a "wellness check" on a tree?

  • PurpleHat Small biz owner in Albany Pk. Former Realtor.

Thanks Scott, but you know that this post is two years old, right? (Also, the dead tree has been deemed "not dead enough" to come down and still stands out front.)

  • PurpleHat, updated info is for anyone searching topic in future. If you do not mind, can I get location of tree to check it out for myself. Then I might then be able to supply you with little more technical info, to better understand official diagnosis by city forestry. As...

PurpleHat, updated info is for anyone searching topic in future. If you do not mind, can I get location of tree to check it out for myself. Then I might then be able to supply you with little more technical info, to better understand official diagnosis by city forestry. As a Volunteer Openland's TreeKeeper, we are trained on diagnosing conditions of trees. Its suggested we look out for problem trees, and report to city same way residents do.

From my experience, City of Chicago arborist usually have no qualms in cutting down the least bit questionable trees. In fact it seems they have a quota to fill, expecting to remove large numbers of trees every winter anyways. And with new machinery, it takes less work to remove than properly planting one. In past cost of removing a tree was an astounding $1200 bucks! Agreed to by union.

Property owners pressure city to remove perfectly healthy trees. Or fully blame big parkway tree for damaging private sewer line. Unaware already damaged drainage pipe leaking water invites root growth. Regrowing back, requiring pipe to be rodded out again. Largest reason of drainage lines needing expensive replacement falls on houses original builders who cut corners by installing loose fitting clay pipes without any grout to keep from inevitable leaking.

Any Arborist knows how healthiest looking trees can turn out to be the structurally weakest and most dangerous. Also true that newest growth ring produced by trees already hollowing out, is only thing keeping it standing. Just like pipe or cardboard tube is a strong hollow structure with OD of outer shell thick enough. So hollow or rotting tree suffers weakened health, newest growth rings will be much thinner. Peak time for failure by thin walled trunk, is month of July during summer drought. Suddenly dropping off on a bright sunny windless day. Ironically lower trunk shoots everyone likes pruning off, supply added girth to trunk. So best option for hollowing out tree, is to retain.

Lost dog near Cullom and Troy

My neighbor found this dog near Cullom and Troy Ave, sat night around 5pm. The dog doesn’t have a collar or tags, so she took it to the police station to be scanned for a micro chip and it didn’t have one. The dog seems super friendly and calm. Wanted to share in case any of you have ever seen this dog around or may know who it’s owner is. Thanks

291 schools across the nation have suffered horrific gun violence since 2012, the year of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre. 7,000 kids have been gunned down. More than 187,000 students have been traumatized. Enough is enough.

Throughout April, students mounted artistic protests in Chicago’s Washington Square Park, aka Bughouse Square, (https://www.newberry.org/bughouse-square-debates) ground zero for America’s free speech movement. We hosted a Soapbox Poetry Speakout; hung 7,000 strips of orange fabric; posted 1,300 notes of hope, representing all the kids were killed last year, plus another 1300 for what's expected this year; and repeatedly chalked the 291 school names down the length of the sidewalk -- an entire city block. Neighbors stopped, tweeted, and high-fived. Some even cried.

It was rainbows and sunshine until a pro-gun group petitioned the park's elected advisory council to mount a counter installation on the fence. Rather than embrace still more free speech, the council voted to crush it. B.S. Bughouse got evicted. No joke. Since then, we've taken our show on the road, popping up at schools, parks, companies, and houses of worship. The response to the 291 Sidewalk Challenge has been tremendous.

So now, on top of moving the needle on gun violence, we also aim to return the park to the people.

She is extremely reliable, trust worthy, punctual, loving and patient. I am happy to introduce her to a new family.

Hi all. At the corner of Ainslie and Drake.

Was up at around 4:40 this morning to get ready for a trip out of town. Had the windows wide open for the fresh air when I heard a car drive by followed by a man shouting, screaming, or something. He sounded like he was on the south side of Ainslie, just below my window, headed east. He went on for a while, I listened until he eventually got too far away to hear anymore.

Not sure if he was saying anything specifically. I thought he might have been saying "poder," but my roommate got it recorded on her sleep talking app, and the playback was pretty clear and more incoherent than I thought as it was happening. This roommate also swears that she heard sirens afterwards, so maybe the guy was reported or received some help?

Did anyone else hear this? It was loud enough that I definitely would have been woken up had I been asleep to start with. It was very strange considering the neighborhood is usually very quiet until 7 or so. Does anyone know what happened?

  • I have heard a man screaming and walking like this during the warmer months many times. The hot spots seem to be the streets surrounding Gross Park to California ave. When my windows are open it is terrifying.

Jac Charlier, NBTA President said “For NBTA to receive this recognition of the local economic development work we are doing that’s helping our neighborhood downtowns from Albany Park to Mayfair, Forest Glen to Edgebrook, to Niles, Morton Grove, Glenview and beyond, speaks to the value of moving from mostly seeing bike trails for ‘health and hobby’ to understanding them as real economic drivers for our small businesses.” Charlier said that NBTA is currently seeking businesses as well as Chambers of Commerce interested in becoming NBTA 2018 Business Partners.

The next NBTA ride will be on Saturday, May 19 at 11:30 AM, with the theme “Icons of our Northwest Area.” More about NBTA at www.northbranchtrailalliance.com on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Scammer posing as People's Gas

Several of my neighbors have mentioned that a man has been asking to be buzzed into their condo buildings, posing as a People's Gas representative, but the company has no record of that service call. Has anyone else in Albany Park run into something like this?

  • I live at Wilson and St. Louis where People's Gas is installing new lines all over. They left a card on our door to get in touch. I called People's Gas main customer service number to verify, and it was legit. So I called the guy back who left the card, and he came over from the job site on Drake, with ID. Turns out they want to move our condo building meters from the basement to outside.

FR, you and your neighbors did the right thing by attempting to verify if it was us trying to gain access to your building. Our employees carry identification and you should always ask to see a company photo ID before allowing utility workers into your home. For our system modernization program, we send letters in advance of working in an area and, in many cases, our crews will knock on doors to schedule appointments.

Please email me your address and contact information at mediarelations@peoplesgasdelivery.com, and we will check to see if your building is located in one of our areas scheduled for an upgrade. If it is, we will have the supervisor in the area contact you to schedule an appointment.

Shots fired at 3:30am

Heard 16 or so successive shots last night, maybe around Wellington and Francisco? I called, anyone else call? I saw cops cruising following the event, once with lights, a couple no lights, but nothing to make me think they figured out what happened. Any info?

  • Thank you guys for politicizing my post to have a platform for your unsolicited opinions about gun regulation.

In the meantime, is there anybody who has info about this shooting that happened outside my window?

    Info appreciated.

Maybe you can pick up some details here:

Select Zone 3 from the Radio Channel drop down and then set the time/date for the recording to start at the top of the hour before you called in. This is free for a single audio download, but well worth the low cost subscription if you want to use it to keep tabs on your neighborhood when you want to know more crime details after the fact.

  • Know me as statute Informed Resident, it could be that some of us are as passionate about the subject matter as the original poster. Granted, such an emotionally charged topic polarizes participants in the heat of the discussion, civility can give way to insults and snide remarks that are almost a feature rather than an option, but do not contribute anything worthwhile to the discussion, What someone thinks of another does not define what an who that person is and essentially matters not.

  • Then it may be appropriate to read your own words, and I quote: " Granted, such an emotionally charged topic polarizes participants in the heat of the discussion, civility can give way to insults and snide remarks that are almost a feature rather than an option, but do not contribute anything worthwhile to the discussion..."

Multiple posters fall into this quicksand; to "explain" with the words above does not ameliorate the back-and-forth insults and a personal need to prevail. Several people disagree, leave it at that, rather than endless haranguing.

Hey everyone - we bought a house about 6 weeks ago and we're experiencing our first round of plumbing problems. Everything was going fine until last week. We started noticing a gurgling noise in the basement bathtub when you flush the toilet, the upstairs kitchen sink drain now has a gurgle to it and just yesterday, water started backflowing out of the basement floor drain when the washing machine drained. The drain doesn't appear to be completely clogged because if you watch the water rise and then shut off the washer, the water will recede as the utility sink empties into the drain (the washer drains into the utility sink). We had an overpriced and highly incompetent plumber come out to have a look at this and to unclog the upstairs bathtub and he couldn't find any issue with the basement. The only thing that he did note was that the catch basin looked as if it might be a little full. Apparently there should be three drain openings in the walls of the basin and only one is visible. The basement was remodeled a couple of years ago and he said that the catch basin could have been closed off from the plumbing system. Does anyone know if it is possible to close off a catch basin? Also, has anyone experienced the issues that I am describing? If so, what did you have to do to fix the problem and, more importantly, what did it cost? Thanks in advance for any info that you can provide.

  • @Robin I'm new to this site and when I saw the date of your post as March 22, I assumed it was this year. My mistake. I was merely attempting to be helpful by posting some info. I'll be more careful when engaging on this public forum in the future.

River Park Improvements

Vera O., Park Mgr. told us last week that
reconstruction of the long demolished
Tennis Courts (6) with lights at River Park.. will begin by 5/3..!
And, the other improvements adjacent like a Soccer Field should be soon followed.
Remember. The $70 million Deep Tunnel one mile dig under Foster Ave.
at the River has been due to finish April
2018...but appears to be quite late.

But, good for the Tennis and Soccer areas. New ,clean sports areas with active players keep the troublemakers
further away.

  • Is the pool still there? I just glimpsed at the construction when I was driving down Francisco yesterday. I couldn't see it, I guess it's covered. I'm hoping for an indoor Olympic sized pool that only I can use :).

Pool is still there but won't be open until CPS is done for the school year - need the high school lifeguards to keep us all safe!

Woman sexually assaulted in the brown line

A 20-year-old woman was standing on the platform at the Brown Line’s Francisco station on Thursday night when a man approached her, began kissing her and sexually assaulted her, Chicago police said.

The attacked happened around 10:40 p.m. at the station at 4648 N. Francisco Ave. in the Ravenswood Manor neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

The news said she wasn’t getting on a train but rather she was playing Pokémon Go....at 1040pm?!

  • Neighborhood dad: I don't carry anything because I don't need to use public transportation. So chill.

  • Neighborhood Dad 27-year resident of North Center/St Bens/Lincol...

I’m as chill as April in Chicago.
