Silverstein Petition to Ban Sale of Assault Weapons in Illinois

Long-time gun safety advocate State Senator Ira Silverstein (D-Chicago) has introduced a measure to address the sale of assault weapons, such as the AR-15, that have been used in countless mass shootings in America.

Senate Bill 3297 will make it illegal to sell assault weapons in Illinois. The legislation spells out which weapons are included in the definition of assault weapons and also includes the sale of so-called “large capacity ammunition feeding devices” of more than 10 rounds in a...

Senate Bill 3297 will make it illegal to sell assault weapons in Illinois. The legislation spells out which weapons are included in the definition of assault weapons and also includes the sale of so-called “large capacity ammunition feeding devices” of more than 10 rounds in a single magazine, belt or drum.

If you share Sen. Silverstein's concerns about gun safety in our state, particularly in light of the mass shootings in Florida, Texas and Las Vegas, please provide your contact information to stay updated on this legislation and other gun safety bills the senator sponsors. Thanks.

Bird Calling

I am by no means a John Audubon, or a birdwatcher. But I noted a different birdcall over the din from the usual chirps, twitters, whistles, chortles, caws and tweets, this almost sounds like a larger bird of prey, different from crows and ravens, louder with a reedy shrill to the HARRRWWWWWW noise it makes. I want to saw hawk or falconish, but the bird remains sight unseen since I’m comfortably ensconced in my bed. With this warmer weather and longer daylight time, I am not surprised but does seem a little out of place for the neighborhood. Maybe I should break out the old DSLR and do a little birdwatching

Read All About It! FAiR Newsletter February 2018 is Out - Jet Noise and Health

Greetings My Neighbors,

Sharing this with you from the Fair Allocation in Runways (FAiR) Coalition. The lead story is about the impact of airplane noise on and in our lives.

JET NOISE AND HEALTH

Chicago and suburban residents under the O’Hare flight paths currently experience jet noise in the range of 65 - 110 decibels on a 24/7 basis. Those living immediately adjacent to the boundary of O’Hare, like the residents of Park Ridge, Bensenville, and the 41st Ward, experience noise levels close to 120 decibels (the sound at which aircraft take off).

Building management

Hey neighbors, wondering who uses a building management company (we are less than ten units in our condo building) and if you recommend their services? Do they save you time and or money? Also, does anyone know of a service company that can do a once or twice a year building punchlist - walking the building to make sure things like emergency lights aren't burned out, fire extinguishers are current, etc?

  • We switched to good steward building management and they’re amazing. Wish we had done it sooner.

  • Hi, my name is Brian with Superior Property Management. Our company has specialized in the management of small condominium associations since 1985. Our website address is: www.superiorcandm.com which contains information on the services we provide. Please send me an email at: bksupcm@gmail.com with your property address and how many apts your association has, so we can prepare a management proposal for your association that your owners can review. Hope to hear back from you soon !!

Vandalism over parking spaces

Someone vandalized our car with nail polish in apparent retribution for parking in the space on the street which they had laid "dibs" on (a spot which, incidentally, we actually dug out ourselves earlier in the day, not that it matters). I assume this is what happened because when we came home and found some stuff sitting in ('claiming') the space, we moved it on to the curb so we could park. The next morning the car had been vandalized. We did not submit a police report yet. It saddens me that some people living on my own block are so craven and idiotic. Anyway, I will refrain from calling out the the address where this occurred (and in whose front yard we saw the items that we moved out of the parking spot). I assume it is against the rules. I suppose it's no news to anyone that you risk vandalism parking on the street. This does seem like a generally nice neighborhood though.

  • That is so wrong -- sorry it happened to you.

  • That is terrible. Those who participate in "dibs" are selfish, entitled, un-neighborly brats. The fact that it is not only tolerated in the city, but celebrated is disgusting.

  • I would file a police report just in case you have to file a claim with your auto insurance carrier down the road. How unfortunate that you have such selfish people living on your block. Better days ahead.

Saving Parking Spaces

Yesterday I saw pretty many spaces saved on several blocks. The snow wasn't that bad that you had a lot of shoveling to pull a car out. This really needs to be addressed. I personally think it's really ignorant thing to do.

After reading all the comments I can certainly empathize with various individual struggles. However, it does not change the fact that dibs is an outdated "tradition" that is rude, selfish and ultimately illegal. Moreover, it harms local area business by seriously reducing available parking throughout the City. Dibs spots are typically vacant during the day which is when area businesses need them the most. I'm sure many on this thread will admit they reduce or eliminate non-essential driving when parking becomes limited. So that single selfish act of saving a spot multiplied by thousands of others can equal real economic pain for area businesses. So you had to expel a little effort to dig your car out caused by an act of nature. Get over it. Just like homeownership, car ownership has responsibilities too. You want to own and use a car? Shovel it out. Stop complaining. Stop making excuses. Stop acting entitled. Continued on next post…

Exceptions can and should be made for elderly and handicapped. Just keep in mind that it's a slippery slope which has evolved into guys not wanting to get their loafers dirty while unloading groceries. And without exception, the worse argument I've heard on this thread comes from dibs supporters who say that saving spots is no big deal, there are worse problems in the world. Yes, sadly there are. There are no words for the violence and mayhem that occurs in this City and elsewhere on a regular basis. That doesn't justify un-neighborly behavior. What a great message for our children. "It's OK little Johnny to lay claim to City property for upwards of a couple weeks a year by using an implied threat of violence and/or vandalism, there are worse problems in the world." By such logic I guess shoplifting should be tolerated because car-jacking is worse. Where does it end?? It doesn't. Removed entitlement turns into real violence, vandalism, or even a mother who was so pissed off that she shoveled snow onto a car that took her space. As we've hopefully learned, it might not have even been that person's fault. Maybe her dibs holder had been removed by someone else hours ago.

Ultimately, we're never going to agree on this topic. So might I make a neutral suggestion instead. On the next material snowfall, everyone who is of able-body goes out and shovels a spot on the street that is not their own. Preferably for someone who really needs the help. Maybe we help create a new better tradition whereby a red ribbon on a stick means that neighbor needs help getting their car out. Who knows, maybe it will catch on and encourage others. Small acts of kindness. Less acts of selfishness. Diminished acts of violence and retaliation.

I think "me" wasn't venting as much as pointing out that it would be nice if more than one neighbor said "Thank you". I also snow throw my block, part of the alley and the block behind me. I do this because it's the right thing to do ( especially for postal carriers) and it makes walking my dogs easier. Jane I do agree with you about the karma but a thanks from folks is always nice.

Put down the shovel, your heart may thank you for it says Chicago cardiologist Dr. Harry Cohen

The biggest snowstorm of the year is bearing down on the Chicagoland area and while outside may look like a winter wonderland, it could be creating a perfect storm for cardiac arrest. Shoveling can be a dangerous activity, causing approximately 100 deaths each winter.

"Most people underestimate how much shoveling can strain the heart," says cardiologist Dr. Harry Cohen of CardioMedical Associates, Ltd in Chicago. “it can be especially dangerous for those who have or are at risk for heart disease.” Shoveling, or pushing a heavy snow blower, can cause a sudden increase in blood pressure and heart rate while the cold air constricts blood vessels and decreases the flow of oxygen to the heart. Together, these two factors can trigger a potentially fatal heart attack. Those who have suffered a prior heart attack, smoke, lead a sedentary lifestyle or have a heart disease, high blood pressure or high cholesterol have an increased risk.

Dr. Cohen advises against shoveling if you have a history of heart disease. If you must shovel, check out these tips from for safe, heart healthy shoveling.

• Talk to your doctor and make sure it’s safe for you to shovel
• Wait to shovel at least 30 minutes after waking up
• Warm up muscles before shoveling by walking for a few minutes or marching in place.
• Do not eat a heavy meal before shoveling
• Do not drink coffee or smoke for at least one hour before or one hour after shoveling
• Only shovel fresh, powdery snow
• Push snow instead of lifting it. If you do lift it, use a small shovel and lift with your legs, not your back
• Do not work to the point of exhaustion. Work slowly and take frequent, 15-minute breaks
• Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration
• Dress in layers and make sure your head, neck and mouth are covered
• Watch for signs of a heart attack: lightheadedness, dizziness, shortness of breath, tightness or burning in chest/neck/arms/back. If you think you are having a heart attack, call 911.

  • Thank you for this. I have heart disease, and had double bypass surgery. Dr. Cohen is my cardiologist. He is a great man who saved my life. Please be careful shoveling snow.

  • fwiw, a Feldenkrais practitioner we know enjoys and recommends Petra Kolber's "CARDIO FOR BEGINNERS" for low-impact aerobic conditioning (search "CARDIO FOR BEGINNERS DVD Petra Kolber" ).

Jose, many post-bypass people don't recover their confidence, which can impede their fullest possible recovery. Sounds like Dr Cohen offers prudent guidance and influences his patients towards a positive outcome and quality of life post surgery. If I ever need a cardiologist, he's certainly one I'd consult with.

  • George F in Ravenswood displaced New Yorker

Most of the murders and victims of murders in this city are in the african american community. How many of them do you suppose are here illegally? It's a mistake to believe that illegal immigration causes a significant spike in crime. It has nothing either to do with political affiliation. NYC has a very liberal democratic Mayor, and the state a very liberal, democratic governor, yet they have fewer murders then us, a lower crime rate, more illegal immigrants, and four times our population.

  • George F I question your numbers when comparing NY to Chicago, sounds very unlikely. Even TV depicts people commonly getting beat up in NY going way back. Sometimes TV can show a remblance of reality. Yes, I know that commonly takes place here too. What has become of civilization?

The reason I say that is because even though it is a bit warmer, someone in an SUV (Grey Nissan Mirano, I think) would know if the window was opened. People, this is the problem: if we don't teach our children to do better, how can we expect better from them? Just bothers me because I pick up trash in front of my house and neighbors, shovel snow, etc, and don't feel that anyone realizes they are in a 'neighborhood' any longer. When did this blatant disregard for others start?

  • Cleaning after others? Endlessly enabling other people's indolence in multiple equally dysfunctional iterations? Modern sysiphus. Greek mythology does not get old over here. Does it?

  • It's not just up to a few to take care of where they live. Yes I notice when I walk around there are blocks with less trash and no broken sidewalks and no pot holes. Then there are other blocks where there is trash, potholes, broken sidewalks. Why is that?

The plastic and aluminum types shred the material into a mulch, and the glass bottle ones just collect them whole. Since, in general, more non-glass containers are brought in, the emptying of the bins follows a relatively close schedule. These are in every grocery store, and some of the big liquor stores even, in new England where bottle deposits are prevalent. They do require frequent emptying, but I would say they encourage recycling. I grew up in the northeast, and it seems like recycling is second nature there. I was a little surprised when I moved to Chicago and witnessed relatively common disregard for it. Programs like this work.

  • Calling 311 is a definite, but emailing the Alderman has proved to be far more effective. I called 311 for lights out 3 days in a row, emailed Aldermsns office, lights on 24 hours later. Sorry about your car!

  • Djstranger . my car key is a chip key that's required for them to turn the engine on .
And yes the lights are back on , I believe 2 days ago. Just becareful out there, don't leave anything of value in your vehicle.. Purse , wallet . by the way , they did take my debit card as well but I put a block on it.

Drone flying over my house and yard yesterday.

I was quite mad as if this drone lingered while I was in my yard. What are the laws about drones flying over private property and if they have a camera invading your privacy of your home? Luckily it didn't crash into the tree in my yard.

  • This happened on Sunday afternoon. The drone was white. It flew over my house and over my yard from the East and continued to the west. Aren't there some rules about going over private property?

  • Next time call the police right away, all drones are camera equipped and anyone can own one, although it can be something as innocent as a neighbor having fun with a new toy, it can also be a peeping Tom or a thief casing your house, just never know. If it makes you feel watched or uncomfortable call it. If it's lingering or hovering too low into your yard, the chances of being watched increase. A good slink shot will do the trick.
