Governor Rauner chose criminals over children and families when he announced today he would veto a public safety measure that would protect communities from illegal gun trafficking.

We are outraged the Governor sided with the gun manufacturers, their lobby and the criminals who continue to cause death and injury with firearms purchased from unregulated gun dealers. His statement reflects that he has little, if any concern for the children who are murdered each day by gun violence in Chicago and the rest of our state.

Corrupt gun dealers in Illinois flood our cities and towns with over 4000 crime guns every year. The Combating Illegal Gun Trafficking Act, a bipartisan measure that passed the General Assembly with a wide margin of support in May will save lives by holding corrupt gun dealers accountable and reducing the number of guns getting into the hands of criminals.

By stating he would veto this bill, Governor Rauner proved once again the gun industry and their lobby are more important than the lives of Illinois children and their families. We urge our lawmakers to be a part of the solution and do whatever is necessary to combat the Governor’s dangerous commitment to veto this bill.

  • This bill would have no impact on gun acquisition by criminals who do not have F.O.I.D. cards, do not go through background checks, do not buy guns from licensed gun shops, and acquire the vast majority of their guns illegally by theft, on the black market, or by straw purchases. In other words, this would be just another ineffective gun control measure.

  • Jus how far are you willing to go to push you gun obsessive grabbing agenda? Do you not realize that you irresponsible, imprudent, rash statements about our governor … “Governor Rauner chose criminals over children and families … sided with criminals … has little, if any concern for the children...

To my neighbors who'll be transitioning to the new site, please be careful what you divulge or report, remember, the bad guys also go through these sites to find out if their cover has been blown and to see who is reporting them, of course they probably did it in Every Block I'm sure, but at least here, we remained anonymous. Please remember that anyone can lurke these open sites, not just your good neighbors and the bad guys never post, they just listen, so please be careful, be safe, prosper and be well, I'll miss you all.

  • Echoing the wisdom of acting with caution. Always assume that your actual name & home address once provided on a social networking platform 'can and may be used by others' and not to your liking.

  • NW Sider speaks the truth. I've worked IT for 8 years and with a few clicks of the mouse and a little code I can have anyones name and addresses if I really wanted to in Nextdoor.

This will be the end of the road for me too for Nextdoor won't serve the purpose that EB once did unfortunately.

Rauner Signs 'Red Flag' Gun Law

Gov. Rauner also signed a law that would extend a 72-hour hold on all guns.

SPRINGFIELD, IL — Gov. Bruce Rauner on Monday signed a new law to keep firearms away from those who may use them to commit acts of violence against themselves or others. Rauner announced the news on social media, saying the "red flag" law, known as the Lethal Violence Order of Protection Act, gives law enforcement and family members the chance to prove in court that a person in possession of guns is suffering from mental health issues and is a threat.

The new legislation allows courts to prohibit gun possession or purchase through what Rauner calls emergency civil restraining orders.

Ripe for abuse, and often called the “snitch bill”, the Lethal Violence Order of Protection Act ("Red Flag Law") infringes on 2nd Amendment rights based on third party allegations with little, if any, real evidence and limited “due process” for the respondent.  Hearings for the orders would be ex parte, where the respondent is not present to challenge the accuser and defend against allegations made against them.  The issuance of an order would immediately prohibit the respondent from exercising their Second Amendment rights.  The right to keep and vear arms should not be treated as a second-class right and should only be restricted consistent with the constitutional requirements of due process. Furthermore, for truly dangerous individuals, this bill does nothing to incapacitate the subjects of the orders, as there is no requirement that they receive mental health treatment.

Waiting periods are an archaic relic from before the digital age, originally meant to give local law enforcement time to complete background checks.  Since the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) came into operation in 1998, technology has allowed background checks to be done instantly, activating the law that eliminated the federally required waiting periods. This will prove to be yet another ineffective gun control measure. With 3.5 million guns already in circulation, extending waiting periods to 72 hours for all future firearm purchases will not prevent “gun crime” or “gun violence”. Criminals do not have F.O.I.D. cards and do not purchase guns legally. No number of hours impact their gun acquisition.

A Surprising Bid for Remington

The Navajo Nation’s plan for Remington was novel: It intended to shift the company away from its consumer business, including curtailing the sale of the AR-15-style weapons frequently used in mass shootings, to focus on police and defense contracts.

The tribe planned to use profits from those businesses to invest in research and development of advanced “smart guns” — those with fingerprint or other technology intended to prevent anyone but the gun’s owner from using the weapon. Smart guns have so far failed to make much headway at the major gun manufacturers, which have faced pressure from groups like the National Rifle Association.

A Surprising Bid for Remington, and an Unsurprising Rejection
The tribe saw a purchase of Remington as way to invest in its people, too. "Navajo has over 70 percent unemployment," Mr. Ryce wrote. "Over the next few years we would shift the assembly (i.e. lesser trained) parts of the business onto the reservation."

Eugene Field(house) River Dumping

Hi Albany Park Neighbors,
On more than one occasion I have seen someone dump plastic bags with animal parts into the bridge passing over the river here. They simply get out of their GMC walk to the river bridge and throw in a bag of animal parts. This also has happened at Central Park. Has anyone else witnessed this and has anyone got a license plate number? I'm hoping to take information to the Alderman. Thanks for your help!

  • What they're doing is gross & wrong on many levels (what type of animal parts and obtained how, etc...?). Hope you can collect enough info to have them caught and stopped.

  • future alderman future alderman

i would call 311 today and the alderman tomorrow

Why Are There So Few Bars in Albany Park?

Why are there so few places in Albany Park where one can sit down and have a drink? There are a ton of good restaurants, but so few of them have liquor licenses. What gives?

A neighborhood is defined by neighbors, and having places where one can have a drink with strangers goes a long way to turning those strangers into true neighbors.

Where Can I Find This Taco Corner?

This week, the Chicago Reader ran an article about the thriving Chicago taco scene that included this intriguing passage:

This week, the Chicago Reader ran an article about the thriving Chicago taco scene that included this intriguing passage:

"Albany Park, for example, and its neighboring north-side enclaves remain (for now) a safe place where the professional taquero can thrive in America. A case study: on a side street off one of the busier thoroughfares in this part of the city, there's a family who each weekend set up a tent along the sidewalk, sheltering a table and chairs, coolers, cold drinks, a salsa bar, and a gas-powered comal on which the patriarch of the clan griddles piles of hissing carne asada, al pastor, cesina, and chorizo con papas. The smell of warming corn tortillas and caramelizing meat casts a spell that's palpable for blocks. People who don't even live in the neighborhood drive their cars to this corner, line up under the tent, and wait patiently to place their orders with a teenager scribbling in a spiral-bound notebook."

Source: https://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/el-santo-taqueria-chicago-taco-authority-tomatillo-taco-ville/Content?oid=51422770

I would like to those tacos, but for obvious reasons, the exact corner wasn't disclosed in the article. Would someone who knows of this spot be kind enough to provide it here? I think that would be safe, as this site gets far less traffic than the Reader, but feel free to message me privately, if you think that would be more appropriate. Thanks in advance!

Just had to bring this up again since I just visited the location on Hamlin and Montrose. The tacos were truly delicious. I tried the steak, barbacoa, and cecina tacos and I must admit the chopped steak wasn't all that great in my opinion but their barbacoa and cecina was phenomenal. I also spoke to the owner for a bit and it seems hes been at that tent for 2 years now and just recently opened up an interior restaurant up the street. But mentioned that the street set up actually brings in all his clientele as opposed to the actual restaurant.
Anyhow thanks to whoever brought this up. I'll definitely be continuing to visit this placle.

Comcast to end hyperlocal site EveryBlock, agrees to send users to rival Nextdoor

http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-biz-comcast-ends-everyblock-20180711-story.html

The "Everybody Own a Gun" crowd will need to go along with some new rules. From the Tribune article:

" The site avoids overlapping neighborhoods, and all members must use their real name and address — a significant distinction from the anonymous environment of EveryBlock."

Will beezil and JimmyMac come out of the closet?

Soon after a sedan (I think dark green) came speeding down the street and flew through the 4 way intersection. A man was in the front seat and a young child in the back. A few seconds later a black sedan came speeding down the through the intersection in hot pursuit of the first car. A young (teenage I am estimating) boy was standing up in the back with this torso out of the sunroof shooting at the car ahead of them. I witnessed about 6+ shots fired. Both cars turned onto Irving Park from Troy. I called the police and gave them the pertinent details I was able to witness. I wanted to post this to encourage others to be safe and on alert for gun related activity in the neighborhood. I am upset I was not able to get the license plate.
