Rude neighbor blocks alley with car repair business multiple days per week

After putting up with this for 2 years, I am done. The neighbor across the alley from me blocks the alley 1-2 days per week with what appears to be a car repair business. Multiple cars get parked in the alley behind my garage and make it a pain for me to leave my house. Incidentally, I work from home but have to leave frequently in my car for my business. Sometimes the people working on the cars have been nice and move the cars so I can get out but last year one of the guys yelled at me for trying to back out of my own garage ( I am a young professional woman). At times, I have been late for appointments due to having to wait for these cars to be moved. Now I hesitate to even bring my trash out to the alley when these people are back there. Just looking for advice on what I can do or who to call. I hate to be “that” neighbor but I am done playing nice. However, I am afraid that if I call the cops, these people will retaliate against me.

  • Not a bad idea

  • It absolutely stinks to know law-abiding citizens with their rights being trampled upon feel they must "bite their tongues" to preserve their personal safety. And I get how you feel. Shame it ever got to where it is.
Truly hope you find a way to deter the activity. Maybe the IL Dept of Revenue might be responsive. Your aggregate observations could constitute "interest" for a bigger agency (DEA or ICE).

Squatters

My neighbors moved out about 3 weeks ago and decided to rent their house instead of sell. About a week ago, they put a Domu sign in their front yard. The house looked somewhat vacant, but they had left some pieces of furniture and boxes of belongings in the home that they were planning on selling or giving away.
The husband had left the back door unlocked on Friday afternoon so that his brother-in-law could pick up some items from the home. On Sunday morning, he stopped by the home to do some work and found a freshly showered girl (that he did not recognize) coming down the stairs.
She also had a bag in her hand of his wife's clothes. After an exchange, he heard footsteps running down the stairs and the girl and the other person fled out the back door.
He called the cops and they went through the house to see what was going on. They found that these people had cleaned, organized, and even decorated (all with my neighbors belongings that they had found while going through loads of boxes). They had made-up beds for themselves with cushions/sheets/pillows and even set-up a little night stand with a small table and lamp. He said they made it very homey. I guess they were making jewelry and had a little station set-up with wire cutters and beads.
The cops were shocked because normally squatters are doing heavy drugs in abandoned houses, but these people were cleaning, decorating, making jewelry, and showering. WHAAATTT?!?!
Is this not insane? I am so mind blown. And this happened next door to me without my knowledge!!! CRAZY!! I have so many questions about this whole situation. I guess I am posting here just to inform the neighborhood of the situation and maybe the off-chance that anyone has any intel or similar experience.
Keep your doors locked people. Don't advertise that you aren't home. And keep a good eye out for your neighbors.

  • Lol Jim. I'm surprised you thought the house was vacant...did you not see their elaborate Halloween decorations this year? Surely you and your dog were spooked the first time you walked by;) Ironically enough, I think it was a vampire that played "the monster mash" every time someone walked by. Ha.

Accident on Kimball between Addison and Elston

Anyone have any information or a link for what happened? My mom's car was one of the ones in the accident, I'd like more info. All I know is that it happened Sunday at 2am, a Lexus rolled over and took out a few parked cars.
Thank you.

Running buddies?

Hi, neighbors! Any one interested in starting a running group? I could use the motivation!

  • HI Amy! I waited at the park for 10 minutes but no one showed. I run and walk around the neighborhood everyday if you or anyone else is still interested!

  • Hey Tula - I'm late to this convo but would definitely be interested in joining next time! Tuesdays aren't the best for me but there are occasional weeks that I'm free. I'd love to start meeting people now that's it's nice out again!

Hey everyone - we bought a house about 6 weeks ago and we're experiencing our first round of plumbing problems. Everything was going fine until last week. We started noticing a gurgling noise in the basement bathtub when you flush the toilet, the upstairs kitchen sink drain now has a gurgle to it and just yesterday, water started backflowing out of the basement floor drain when the washing machine drained. The drain doesn't appear to be completely clogged because if you watch the water rise and then shut off the washer, the water will recede as the utility sink empties into the drain (the washer drains into the utility sink). We had an overpriced and highly incompetent plumber come out to have a look at this and to unclog the upstairs bathtub and he couldn't find any issue with the basement. The only thing that he did note was that the catch basin looked as if it might be a little full. Apparently there should be three drain openings in the walls of the basin and only one is visible. The basement was remodeled a couple of years ago and he said that the catch basin could have been closed off from the plumbing system. Does anyone know if it is possible to close off a catch basin? Also, has anyone experienced the issues that I am describing? If so, what did you have to do to fix the problem and, more importantly, what did it cost? Thanks in advance for any info that you can provide.

  • @Robin I'm new to this site and when I saw the date of your post as March 22, I assumed it was this year. My mistake. I was merely attempting to be helpful by posting some info. I'll be more careful when engaging on this public forum in the future.

Professional lawn service needed

Anyone recommmd a great professional lawn service company? Some one that knows wjstbheybare doing please. No side job people please

  • Can't offer a good one. If you see a crew working near your area, pull over and observe them to see if they work the way you'd want your property treated.

So many bad ones -- many use oversized equipment that ultimate saves little time, if any, and carelessly destroy exterior fixtures (brushing against siding, crushing downspout extensions, chipping garden timbers, etc. Would NOT recommend Jose Rodriguez).

  • Abc123 13 yr Old Irv resident, please pick up trash

We've been using Gus Herrera & Sons for years, been very happy with them. 773-410-3193 and ask for Oscar.

Massive New School Proposed On Montrose — Community Meeting Thursday @ 6pm

On Thursday April 26 at 6pm there will be a community meeting about North Park Elementary’s plan to build a massive 63,000+ square foot school at their current location. This is three times the size of their existing structure. A related plan to more than double the enrollment will also be put into place. The meeting will take place at 2017 W. Montrose. Please attend if you want your voice heard.

Here are the proposed plans:

A compromise should be worked out and it's very possible that the school put the biggest plan out there so that after negotiations, it scales down and ends up building exactly what they wanted to initially. They come off as "listening to the neighbors" which is great PR. That would also follow the Rahm/Chicago way of doing things.

I also don't think it's that simple to tear it down and make condos. Unless of course, the Alderman allows the zoning change for the new developer/owner. Currently it is zoned for a school and the playlots are zoned for single family homes that existed there previously.

To take your example further that if the school moves and a condo building comes in, that would actually help the tax base since those condos (also Transit Oriented Development which everyone seems to endorse now) would than add greatly to the property tax revenue to our neighborhood. Currently the city receives $0 from those prime city lots as the private school is tax exempt.

  • A condo building has pros and cons. It would probably be just as big, though. It seems like they are always retail level plus 3 floors. I am sure they would change the zoning if the alternative is a big empty building. I think those developers have a lot of...

I am sure they would change the zoning if the alternative is a big empty building. I think those developers have a lot of leverage, right? It’s a good location for condos, near the EL. The businesses would like condos, I would imagine. I am at least 2 blocks away so I have less skin in the game, but I still prefer a school. I just feel it adds more value and it brings families into the neighborhood. I hope everyone is reasonable on all sides.

I'm having a small surgical procedure done under anesthesia and I need to find someone to pick me up. I don't have any family locally and no one else that is able to help. The surgery center will not allow me to use an Uber or taxi and want me to provide a name of someone they can call when I am ready to be released. I'm looking for services similar to these two (links below) but neither are in Chicago. I don't need any special car or services. With the size of the city, you'd think they'd have something here but I can't find anything. As I start to get older, I do worry that I'll need this more often. Any ideas are appreciated.

Saving Parking Spaces. Wonder why it's hard to find a parking space?

Once in a while you see someone park in the middle of 2 spaces and then later come and bring another vehicle and move the first vehicle back to make room for the other vehicle. It's hard to find parking and then you have people saving spaces or parking their business trucks on residential streets or vehicles that have been left for weeks in the same spot.

  • Yes it bad but when u get home & cars from the brewery are parked on the side streets. Plus some houses have more than 1 car. I feel the brewery need to buy lot next to it & have a lot & or permit parking.

If it's a crime in progress, it goes to the top of the list. A parked car problem is down the list. You may need to call more than once to get to a time when the dispatcher has police available.

The city should have something similar to "meter maids" who are sent out to tickets or inspect the cars parked over seven days or otherwise parked illegally. . Trained police officers aren't needed for this.

Hi all - I’m looking to move to Wilson/St. Louis and have a few questions for anyone who lives near there -

1. I’ve looked at crime reports for the area and there are definitely incidents but it doesn’t seem like the area is ravaged in crime - do you feel safe walking/parking at all times of the day? Obviously won’t be coming home too often in the middle of the night but still something to consider. I do a lot of walking/running in the middle of the day which is also something on my mind.

2. How is parking for you? I see most of it is permit parking but still looks busy. Also, how is parking for guests?

3. What do you love best about the neighborhood?

Thank you so much!
