Great News! I want to make sure my students have the materials they need to succeed, so I just created a DonorsChoose.org classroom project request. Click the links below to see what my students and I are up to:

I have a T switch installed which allows discharge into the city sewer and the other the the pvc pipe that runs out to the alley buried under my fence. The switch is turned to summer pipe via the outside pipe now and in the fall it's turned to the city sewer so the water isn't freezing in the outside pipe. Whatever works to keep your lower level dry...do it. Also don't forget to divert those gutter downspouts away from the house and not down into the pipe that runs underneath your home.

  • We had a similar issue years back, we had Roto Flush Sewer Plumbing come in and correct the issue. Havent had the problem since. www.RotoFlushSewerPlumbing.com is their site give them a call if you are still having issues. The name of the plumber is Omar, real nice guy and he always shows up on time.

Kittyhop in Logan Square, I was standing at my rear kitchen window while on an important phone call, when I saw the perpetrator inside my truck. I yelled out as loud as I could and pounded on my window, which startled both the customer service representative and the a-hole in my truck. I ran out my backdoor towards my truck when he ran down the alley while clutching his, what looked like, a gun peering out of his shirt. I had left my vehicle unlocked (not any more), just to avoid damage to my vehicle in situations like this.

  • WOW!!That is quite something...and yes, scary that he might have had a gun....

(The guy from the service that jumped my car today had a gun in his belt..that ISN"T why I gave him a tip however...)< that's a joke...but he did have a gun..

Paint thinner smell

our house started smelling very strongly of paint thinner yesterday. We had the gas company come by and they did find a small leak in the dryer connections and they capped it off. We aired out the house and hoped it would clear. This morning the strong smell is back again. They are digging up the sewers near us and I'm wondering if that has anything to do with it. Is anyone else having this problem? We are near Addison and kedzie.

Potential Gunshots Near George and Troy

I'm at George and Troy and just heard what sounded like 5 shots a few blocks northeast of me. Anyone else hear anything? I called 911 to be safe.

  • I don't know the exact time, because the 911 call doesn't show up in my call log for some reason. It was Sunday, November 5th, late morning/early afternoon. Based on the accounts of others, it sounds like it was near Wellington and Albany. I could hear it a few blocks away at George and Troy because I was outside. My wife was inside and didn't hear anything.

  • My phone log for 911 call is for 12:53 pm on Sunday, I'd say that was about 3 minutes after we heard the shots. We were outside and it was like it was next to us. My husband was inside digging around in the basement and didn't hear a thing. Go figure.

Incidentally, I did not hear the gunshots from Saturday morning, though I wish I had, I would've called those in too.

Windy City Playhouse

Two years ago someone posted about seeing a play at Windy City Playhouse. I checked them out and decided to buy a seasons pass. Every play I see there is better than the last. The prices are cheaper than down town at Goodman ( also had seasons pass there ), the seats are roomy & comfortable with a little table for your cocktail, there is free parking right outside. You can eat at Leader Bar or Pitchfork and walk over to the play. The acting is superb. The plays are all awesome. I just saw "Becky Shaw" tonite and loved it. if your into live plays at smaller venues check this place out. All around a great night out.

  • Been there once a while back, thoroughly enjoyed the experience & acting. I should go back soon again!

  • Nick in Irving Park Condo Owner

Chris Jones (Tribune theater critic) wrote that with "Becky Shaw" the theater looked to be hitting its stride as a neighborhood playhouse. He pointed out that some of their productions were pretty dreary in terms of subject matter. I was not enthusiastic about many of their early productions, but I look forward to the shows they have scheduled. My wife and I are eager to go and I'll be purchasing tickets.

Broken car window

A day late asking .... came out at 6:30 am to find my car window on driver's side had been busted in. Nothing stolen (not that there was anything), just really irritating. Wondering if anyone else in area had same experience? Happened on Francisco between Belmont & Elston.

  • Was this Halloween night?

  • Yes, unfortunately. I have lived in Chicago for 15 years .... 2.5 in this neighborhood and have never had any issues.

  • It was a group of neighborhood teenage kids who busted car windows on multiple vehicles with a baseball bat on Halloween night. If anyone else had their windows busted in the Avondale neighborhood or by the Target on Addison near Sacramento park send me a private message and I’ll pass along the information I have.

Gunshots two nights in a row?

Did anyone hear gunshots two nights in a row near Barry and Sawyer/Kedzie (guessing)? We first heard it on Oct 31 @ 7pm and then again Nov 1 @ 11pm. Same direction and the same noise level which I'm guessing it was a similar distance away. My partner was parking our car and it was so close that he drove around before coming home.

  • We thought we heard something. I didn't hear the first one (my Husband did) but we both heard the 11pm Nov 1st. I didn't think it sounded like a gunshot at all but he thought it could have been a single gunshot which seems odd. Near sawyer and Kedzie,

  • I had not heard the shots nor heard of them. Thank you for the heads up....I will reach out to the CAPS office and see if they have any information.

  • We were on Troy halloween night close to Barry and I heard them, couldn't tell if gunshots or fireworks, though leaning towards gunshots. The sound must have bounced off the buildings, because to me it sounded like it came from Barry and Albany.

Gutter replacements

Hi,
Looking to replace our gutters on our 2 flat, that have been damaged by ice dams in previous winters. Looking for recommendations on contractors for this- google search is a little generic with a lot of clutter, always prefer word of mouth : )

thanks!

  • Inexpensive route will be AAA Roofing. They sub out the work to a low bidder. So, if you know how the gutters should be installed properly, AAA is a good route.

  • Michael Stanek co-op housing resident

Peter Scobelski 773-415-1552 can be hard to get because he's in high demand for his excellent, affordable work - siding and gutters. definitely worth getting a bid from him.

My wife and I live in Avondale and we are expecting our first child this coming June. We are looking for at-home daycare options. We noticed not all at-home daycare centers have websites for us to research. We have lived in the neighborhood for 2 years now, but don't know of all the options in the neighborhood. Any suggestions would be welcomed!

Avondale Tap on Belmont - reopened

I noticed that the Avondale Tap/Grill or whatever they call it now has reopened. Anybody stopped in and checked it out?

  • Fast Freddy Grace and Leavitt

I noticed the lights were back on, but didn't see any customers yet. I hope it is up and running.

  • It is open! I went in last weekend. It's got new ownership. The place looks pretty much the same inside - though the cleaned up, put in a new concrete patio (so there will be outdoor seating maybe?), and did some landscaping. The menu is all new. They were scrambling a bit when I went in since they'd only be open about 24 hours - but the new staff and owners seem great.

Halloween kids

What time should we expect kids for candy? It’s my first time home without my little guy.

  • In Avondale, had about 125 kids when I ran out of candy (I know because that's how many pieces I had to give out.) I didn't even get one piece! Darn! :-)

1st kid came about 4:45 pm but then not any until around 5:20 pm. Then it was bunches every few minutes until about 7:15 pm.

  • My son and I were out from 530p-630p, with a group. I have enuff candy to last us thru Christmas now

Alderman Carlos Rosa introduced mega down zone of Milwaukee Ave (Kimball to Central Park) to City Council. Outcry forced belated "forgot to have transparent community meeting" Monday 10/30 6:30pm @ Hairpin Lofts (Milwaukee @ Kimball). Down zone to B2-1 is single family home residential development density. see Zoning chart. 2,500 sq ft of lot required for each new dwelling unit per Rosa downzone. Some properties have existing zoning B or C dash 3 & higher. Rosa down zone to lowest density dash -1 devalues some long time owners tremendously. Rosa may not be around after 2019 election; but residents and community will be stuck with this for a long time. It's one thing to force developers who seek upzone to get Alderman and community approval, it's another to broad stroke Aldermanic perogative mega down zone higher density business corridor near transit hub to uber low density to control all possible development. Some elderly Polish speaking affected long time property owners dont even know about Rosa down zone.
