What can we middle age Chicagoans do to promote some positive soulful popular music such was the norm in the 1970s with music like Motown, R&B, Soul, Chicago Blues. I even liked a lot of Disco like Donna Summers and I sadly note that today's youth music is not in any way couples' dance music. When did it become reality that American youth, including Black African American youth doesn't know how to dance? I did hear that there is a small "step dancing" community, I hope it includes some young people. When is this terrible rap music plague going to finally end? It's gone on longer than the Bubonic Plague Black Death lasted in Europe!

Emj1900, I don't think the original poster bothers himself with facts. It would laughable if it weren't so ridiculous that the origianl poster is telling a Grammy-award winning musician how he should conduct himself in his own industry where he has already earned one of it's top accolades.

The only thing more ridiculous and offensive is his pathological desire to cling to some outmoded and somewhat racist notion of Black respectability. He probably tells every Black person he meets how he would vote for Obama for a third term if he could, but insists the problems facing the Black community would disappear if "those people" would just wear a suit and tie/stop istening to rap music/insert culturally elite trope here.

As much as he glorifies the days of Motown, you never saw too many Motown artists engaged seriously in politics. That was part of their education too. There are very few I could imagine at a local community meeting on education. People like the original poster are always romanticizing the past - a time when people like themselves were doing a lot better and people of color were doing worse.

    I respond:

Sorry, that's simply not true. Black African Americans in cities like Chicago and Detroit were doing a lot better in the period 1945-1965 than then are doing in impoverished all Black neighborhoods in Chicago and Detroit now. Detroit had the highest per capita income of any city in the world - it was the Paris of the Midwest and the "Mecca" of Black African American culture. All of that changed for the worst after the terrible riots of 1967-1968. And I'm sorry, it's just obvious to any intelligent, honest person (Black, White, Asian, Hispanic, Arab etc) that the best Black African American popular singers of the 1960s, 70s are way better than today's rap "artists", "singers". Mavin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, the OJays, the Spinners, Curtis Mayfield, the 5th Dimension - I say they were/are better musicians and better American citizens than acts like "Chance the Rapper" or Eminem.

It's like comparing the best Black African American boxers from the 1960s and 70s today's boxers. The only Black African American boxing champion these days is Floyd Merriweather and he ways ~ 85 lbs and would need a high chair to get served at a bar.

C'mon folks why are we letting all standards of decent behavior fall down here in Chicago?

Our grandparents never tolerated such nonsense and such vulgar, foul "music".

Carpet & Upholstery - Great Job!

Yesterday in preparation for the Holidays we had our carpet cleaned by Double A Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning. He did an excellent job without the truck, hoses, water and mess that we have experienced with other Carpet Cleaners. The icing on this cake was that the carpet dried in 2 hours, is clean and fresh with all natural products and amazingly reasonable. This is a family owned business and the owner Darrell is a local resident. His # is 773-895-9424.

  • Thanks Ruby! That's great info. Will pass it on.

  • We just had ours cleaned by New Dawn Carpet Cleaning. They also took care of our delicate Persian area rug and my sofas in the man cave. They were reasonably priced and the best part of all much like your experience it dried fast. I don't have their number but their website is www.NewDawnCarpetCleaning.com They have a coupon for new customers so don't forget to click and print that to save some money :)

Airplane noise?

what flew over hyde park five minutes ago?

  • I_want_to_know In search of solutions!

Your message does not automatically get stamped with a time so please I think it would help if the time was added to your post. I have always lived close to trains and buildings that make loud noises so I can tune certain noises out.
What did that noise you heard sound like? Helicopter, plane or that Osprey aircraft.

  • I have noticed a VERY loud plane flying close overhead this weekend and last. The noise is so awful, I thought it would crash. Never actually saw it tho.

  • SW

I assume you are talking about what you heard at around noon. Yesterday it was helicopters flying over the Bears game in celebration of Veterans's Day before the game started. I saw the helicopters on TV. Nothing to worry about.

Dangerous street crossing Lake Park 53rd st and 55th

I have had many near misses from being run over by high speeding cars when I am crossing Lake Park Avenue on 55th and 53rd street.

On 55th street this problem is West bound vehicles on 55th street have a green arrow to turn North on Lake park, then the light switches to just green and the walk sign comes on, the drivers just see green means go and the plow in to us pedestrians at high speeds.

On 53rd street the problem is just drivers don't acknowledge pedestrians and turn at high speeds turn South on Lake Park. I would like for Police to set up sting operations and ticked the very dangerous cars. I feel pedestrians who have to dodge these murderous speeding cars are within their rights to throw objects at the cars.

  • I_want_to_know In search of solutions!

Would you want a Camera positioned at each of those intersections?
I am sure our current mayor would love that!
It could record cars violating the rights of pedestrians and issue either warnings or tickets. I have seen near misses of cars hitting pedestrians when turning but I have also seen pedestrians walk against the lights. I think pedestrians deserve tickets also when they almost cause accidents!
More warning signs might also help drivers be more cautious!
    Be careful out there.

  • Hyde Park is just too @#$% overcrowded. And it's going to get worse. PERIOD!!!

Moving to Hyde Park

May be moving to Hyde Park...what are the best areas...places to go and people to see?

Thanks!

  • I_want_to_know In search of solutions!

I think there are factors to consider when you decide to move according to your needs/desires such as:
Schools, transportation, stores, parking, security, access to the lake/parks, # of neighbors in the same building, amenities in the building, rental costs, etc.
So WHY did you pick HP?

Fall Lawn and Garden Clean-ups and Snow Removal

Dear Neighbors:

My husband scheduled Panama yesterday. Although summer and fall weather was beautiful, it’s time to clean out gardens/side lots, trim the bushes back and aerate the lawns in preparation for winter. For years we have used Panama Maintenance 773-967-8343 because they are in our community all the time, they’re honest and do a great job at a fair price. Panama also does snow removal in the winter. Call Panama to get on his schedule early for fall cleanups, snow removal and other services.

  • Ruby in Bronzeville Engaged neighborhood advocate

E.J., Panama is black and a black owned locally run business. You may see his white truck, trailers and equipment all over the Southside of town.

Leonard, for handyman services we use Shelley Odell 773.407.2346 he is honest, competent, fair and reliable. He lives in the community and is also black.

  • Leonard2003 kyria

For the record, I am Happy to have good and honest people working at my house regardless of ethnicity or background . It's hard to find that in my experience.
