Locksmith Recommendations

Hey Everyone,

I need to have the locks changed at the condo I closed on (and if possible, have them on the same key; right now the deadbolt and regular handle have separate keys).

All responses appreciated. Thanks!

To see if your two existing locks can be keyed alike try to insert the key from one lock into the other. It will not open it but you just want to see if it will enter. If it does then remove one lock (the easy one) and take it and both keys to the locksmith. He will key the lock you bring to the key for the other lock.
There are some cases where this will not work (one key is longer than the other for example) but it usually will.
Note: You did not say if the deadbolt is key on both sides or key / knob. If key on both take the knob lock with both keys to change the knob.

Chicago's Safest And Most Dangerous Neighborhoods Based On Shootings
Last week I posted on Chicago's safest and most dangerous neighborhoods based on the murder rate. Although that's a pretty popular way for people to make a determination of a neighborhood's relative safety it's actually a pretty narrow definition. A lot of bad things an happen to people without them getting murdered.

Its a sad state of affairs when citizens are more worried about being discriminated against by the police vs being a victim of crime by a non police officer.

In 2016 stop and frisks went down 80% here in chicago. Anyone know if crime went up any ?

Id like to think cops still profile but i dont know. They stop profiling me when i stopped driving my cutlass with ttops tinted windows and sound system and moved out of that ghetto called uptown.

David 1929, I agree that is the current state of policing in Chicongo and crook county, but if the CPD rank and file was to tour/patrol in a "fetal" fashion, then they shouldn't be paid or collect benefits via the taxpayers for subpar law enforcement work. If CPD will not act as "The thin blue line," then what are civilians supposed to do to protect themselves? Turn vigilante? Or will it turn into a urban Lord of the Flies?

The ACLU oversight on CPD street stops, Kimisha Foxx failing to charge or allowing violent felons "of color" to plea down heinous crimes, the local and national leftist msm's 'War on the Police,' which by the way, way initiated by Obama's anti-cop Department of Justice, and local politicians pandering to "the community," has had a chilling effect on proactive police work.

The "Ferguson Effort" is real. Crime is up. Don't believe The media lies. They act as Emmanuel's personal stenographers as does CPD Superintendent " Special Ed."

What's truly necessary is a Star Chamber to liquidate/neutralize the recedivist criminal element, and vote weak on crime politicians out of office.

Found Cat Tabby with white chest and paws male

Grace and Narragansett Ave. Very affectionate. Checking tomorrow if microchipped. Posting on Lost Cats Illinois - Facebook as well. Very nice boy - was very hungry. I bathed his chest and paws so his picture might not be a very good representation. In my home tonight and my own cats are in the basement. Let me know if you or someone you know is missing this guy.

CHICAGO -- For the past seven years, Air Force veteran Anthony Johnson has been selling newspapers out of a beaten up stand at the corner of Milwaukee and Faragutt. Chicago Police Lieutenant John Garrido connected with Anthony about a year ago and decided to give Anthony a better place to sell his newspapers.

Garrido posted a Facebook Live video asking for help. Volunteers stepped up, and they spent the last few weeks transforming this stand.

All of this was done with the help of local sponsors like Tony Marino of Marino Jeep. They took Johnson to the local Dick's Sporting Goods and bought Johnson all new winter attire to help him stay warm.

Johnson makes about $120 a week from his newsstand, and most of the time, he's just trying to by. He says he sleeps outdoors more often than indoors. So, John set up a GoFundMe account to help with Anthony's living expenses.

"While this is not a long term fix, our hope is this will give Anthony a chance to get a leg up to take care of himself down the road. We will also look into other resources that may be available to him as a vet," the GoFundMe page says.

Today, the newsstand looks brand new, and artist Peter Bucks is painting two murals on the stand.

The new and improved newsstand will be unveiled Thursday night at 5:30 p.m.

Splendid Soap Shop

I just found a wonderful little shop at Irving Park Rd and Mead (across from The Portage Theatre) called Distinct Bath and Body.
They sell handmade soap (made on site), bath salts, scrubs, face masks, shaving soaps, loofahs, etc.
Everything smells wonderful and the owner is friendly and attentive.
If you love artisinal bath products, you gotta check it out!

In our home, the ceilings closest to the street where the work has been taking place are showing a substantial amount cracking since they started work in late October.

For those who aren't home during working hours, the work currently taking place requires a substantial amount of pounding that actually "shakes" your home from the bottom up.

I have contacted the Alderman's office as well as People's Gas directly about this, but wanted to spread the word to those who might be similarly affected and not even know it.

As new gas lines came in a few years back, I watched heavy equipment get driven over yards and sidewalks, damaging both. I pressed for replacement and they sent some jerkw@d who showed me lo-res photo captures he said came from video taken prior to the work. The images seemed to depict the new damage as pre-existing, with blurs or debris obscuring all detail, like they'd been messed with in Photoshop. I wasn't buyin it and said the coloring in the images looked weird, like before and after frames were put into one, the guy gave-up and marked the damaged sections for replacement.

XSport on Irving Park - Lock your doors!

Hey neighbors! My husband returned to his car after a workout to find a young man rummaging through the trunk of our car. The young man then got into an awaiting car and they drove off slowly. Yes, my husband called the police but he hasn't heard anything regarding filing a report, go figure.

  • My son has had 2 thefts at different XSport locations from the lockers... I think they are running their own theft ring myself... they don't give a rat about doing anything about it either... one was Lakeview and the other was either Portage or Norridge... I mean you have cameras, why are you not catching the scumbags doing this? Pathetic!

Apparently a world full of garbage doesn't bother some people. If they're driving, it's even easier. They drop it in someone else's neighborhood and don't have to look at it. Then it looks like WE are the ones who don't care.

Do you want to provide an outdoor kitty with a heated home during winter?

I bought this one on Amazon and we love it, the kitty loves it too. It was only about $45. There are so many feral cats in our area and they keep the rat population to a minimum for us so the least we can do is provide homes for some of them. If you have a covered outdoor area with an outlet you can plug this in, takes very minimal power to run. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004ZJOH06/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 here is a picture of the kitty in my backyard enjoying her house.

Central and Waveland

There was a question asked in another thread about what the status is at the empty lot at Central and Waveland. There was a meeting at Chicago academy in the spring about a Alzheimer’s memory development to be built. Is this one going to stay vacant as long as the Belmont and Narragansett site?

  • Maggiemay 45 year resident @ PP

I'm surprised they haven't found any dead body in there yet. It's gonna turn into a dumping ground soon

  • This is another project just like the one at Belmont and Narragansett that just sits. It’s a shame there is no transparency with Villegas. Locking back it’s a good thing many residents got involved in stopping Villegas from pushing thru that section-8 housing development. Everyone should be Leary of what is going on with these 2 areas.

Anybody have a great pediatrician and OBGYN (and hospital) they would recommend?

For an OB/GYN, hands down, I recommend Dr. Micah Garb at Northwestern-Lake Forest. We just delivered our first at Lake Forest in March. I know it is a bit of a drive, ( but if you were looking at going as far as out of state, I imagine you don't mind a bit of a commute.) Long story short, I began seeing Dr. Garb when he was at a private practice in Streetorville. He's fantastic enough that I followed him to the burbs. When choosing a hospital to deliver it, we primarily looked at Swedish, Prentice, and Lake Forest. I, too, was unimpressed with Swedish. Our delivery experience at Lake Forest was hands-down the best it could have been. The staff was amazing, and we felt like we were the only patients there. I was also a high risk pregnancy, and never once doubted any care or advice we received.

As far as a pediatrician, we're going to a Northwestern affiliated office at North & Clyborn. We've seen all but one of the Drs. there, and it's been kinda 'meh'. Definitely haven't clicked with any of the Doctors or been impressed, but not bad enough that I'd say to steer clear. PM me if you have any questions, best of luck, and congratulations!!!

  • Illinois Masonic was fantastic. The level of personal attention and care was incredible, and they don't rush you out of there, unlike Prentiss, which we were warned is baby factory. Their ObGyn faculty group has a lot of great doctors. Dr Melissa Dennis, Dr Popper.

We also highly recommend our pediatrician--Dr Nava Segall. She's with Lurie Children's but sees infants at Illinois Masonic as well.

Binny's is great if you're hosting a birthday party and need a good selection of booze and need to do it cheap. Fischman's is great for when you're trying to find something special for the birthday boy/girl.
    I'll be supporting both.

  • What I like about places like Fischman's is their stock was always fresh. That's 100 percent true. They didn't over-order and you had to get there when the truck delivered the goods to pick up certain beers. And I also loved how they brought in different breweries on the weekends. Fresh taps.

However, Binny's does have a great selection of beer that you don't find at most local corner liquor stores (not talking about bottle shops). I picked up 18th Street there, for example.

BeefBelly restaurant has closed.

The BeefBelly restaurant at Lawrence and Central has closed. The shades are all shut with paper signs saying Tipsy Cow Cantina. Always thought it was odd to open so close to BrgrBelly on Irving.

From their Facebook page...
'We have decided that serving burgers at both Beefbelly & the “original” Brgrbelly within a 1 mile radius does not make a lot of sense and is pretty redundant for our great Northwest Side neighborhood so we have decided to re-concept and re-model Beefbelly into a Fresh & Funky Fiesta!! The "Tipsy Cow Cantina” opens this December and will feature tacos, salads, burritos, nachos, live music, karaoke, an amazing margarita bar…get ready for a whole new fresh and fun environment…

Also, Molly & Myles Ice Cream has closed for the season. We look forward to seeing you this coming Spring.'

  • I'm excited for the new concept. Yes, we have other Mexican joints in the area, but to me the ones I frequent all serve different purposes. Pueblo Nuevo is awesome btw. Cochinita is more upscale, also the bomb.

I'm excited for the new concept. Yes, we have other Mexican joints in the area, but to me the ones I frequent all serve different purposes. Pueblo Nuevo is awesome btw. Cochinita is more upscale, also the bomb.

I like Brgrbelly's vast beer selection so I hope that carries over to the new place. And if I may make a suggestion ... "skinny" margaritas would be great. Like hundreds fewer calories and I've been trying to watch it all summer. haha

Brgrbelly is down the street from me so I've only been to Beefbelly a handful of times, and funnily enough, it was always for the chicken sandwiches. I never got around to trying the beef sandwiches, which is sad because I'm not a fan of traditional soggy beef sandwiches so I bet I would have really enjoyed Beefbelly's offerings.

I fully understand why the owner was disheartened to read all the negativity here. Neighbors beg for businesses and when someone puts their livelihood on the line to open one, it's a sea of complaints.

It'll always be this way due to the anonymity of the internet. People complained about a Starbucks potentially opening. They said we needed more local offerings. Then something local opens and they complain it isn't Ethiopian food.

The more cool, fun places to hang out at, the better the neighborhood is for it. I welcome anyone taking the chance and opening a business. People complained the same way when Portage Grounds opened. "Oh, we already have Regulus. Why do we need another coffee shop?" But now (at least from the outside looking in), Portage Grounds AND Perkolator are thriving.

Good luck with the new concept, Tipsy Cow. Sounds like it'll be fun to get out to on a cold, winter day. My best suggestion is to try shaking off harsh negativity here, although I can see why anyone would want to defend themselves. As a small, neighborhood joint, a lot of vocal (and IMO unwarranted) criticism from neioghbords can negatively impact the bottom line.

  • Mmmm, I would love a polish sausage and egg taco.

Found dogs

Sharing again, now 2 dogs found together....let's get them home.

  • @Chi-Girl Portage: "While opinions vary in animal rescue, with a proper socialization plan, kittens born outside have an opportunity to be socialized."

just out of curiosity do you have any idea what the "window of opportunity" so to speak would be for a kitten to be socialized?
for example, i have a now 1 year old cat/kitten who spent 100% of her first ~10 weeks of life outdoors, and has spent 100% of her life since then indoors and i've never noticed any kind of problems whatsoever.

  • @BelmontCentral, I don't. Tree House says it's ideal to begin socializing before 8 weeks, but there are many kittens who are older than that who can still be socialized. I think that the older they get, the tougher it becomes. I have heard of people bringing them in at four months old and still being able to socialize them, but it took a long time.
