Vacant Lots

Hi Everyblock:

I am curious about udpates the following locations and can share what I know also.
1) Irving and Central: Was supposed to be a Starbucks. Sposato's assistant said it would not be built unless another business joins in for development on that lot. I am not sure who pursues clients-developers, Starbucks, aldermen?

3) Waveland /Central: My calls to Alderman Villegas have not been returned. I thought it was going to be a home for seniors, but not sure. Is there any update on this?

4) Six Corners: Same- not getting calls returned. I am guessing Sears will make announcements after their Q4 earnings come in so maybe developers are waiting to hear about that site also. Just not sure.

5) Central and Berteau: Mia's Gelato. It usually closes in the winter, but maybe the summer was not strong enough for them. They have a Brokerage sign on the window showing it's available for lease.

The space has been gutted over a year ago and Elly's has salvaged and relocated much of the kitchen equipment from their former North Avenue location to this space. It is sitting in a big pile in the middle of the space. Other then that there has been no other activity nor do they have any permits posted for a build out of a restaurant.

Sears, both the main store and the auto repair center are currently for lease. http://www.seritage.com/retail/property/4730-w-irving-park-rd/3312523/landing

Garbage disposal

In the summer I was told by the Aldermans office that if I have stuff other than routine garbage (rugs, couch, tables, mattress etc). I was told to give them a few days advance notice. When I recently called, they now say that this stuff is no longer picked up and I would have to hire a private company. Does anyone else have this problem? I took rugs out and I don't know what to do with them.

  • I just spoke with Alderman Arena's office and the person I talked to said the city does still pick up bulk items from 1 to 4 unit properties as long as the owner calls a day or two in advance. He also said that if there is a large number of items because someone in the building is moving or doing a massive cleaning, that person has to make other (private) arrangements.

Arena gave the right answer, thanks Katiie.

If anyone knows anyone who would be interested please let me know. Its truly a sad story. She will not enlist the help of a shelter. She won't separate them either. It is my opinion they would be able to be separated if the 2 of them become too much but she will not separate them herself. She will take them back if it doesn't work out or someone changes their mind. The cats are not a problem. My sisters and her dog are the problem. He is harassing the cats. The cats are ok with dogs. Her dog is not ok with the cats. They really need a better home. My sister favors the dog. When she doesn't have money she feeds them dog food! She doesn't keep up with cleaning the litter like she should. I can't have any cats because mine is FELV+ and I am a renter. My landlord lives in my building and only allows one cat. She was supposed to be taking care of the cats temporarily but the original guardian is now in a nursing home and wont be able to take them back. She is aware she is looking for a home for them. I'm willing to provide some free cat sitting visits to anyone who adopts them( within reason). I will drive you to meet the cats in Elgin if needed. Or I will bring them to you if you would like. A trial basis is good too. Or even if I could find someone to take care of them until a new home is found that could work too. I'm willing to help in any way I can.

Splitting up a pair of cats that have been together for a long time, or who have bonded, can be very stressful for them. And stressed cats are less likely to achieve a successful adoption. Most no-kill shelters are very sensitive to this situation. Are there any suitable shelters in the Elgin area?

    Article about feline bonding:
    https://www.petplace.com/article/cats/pet-behavior-training/bonding-in-cats/

As many owners already know, cats don't just bond to their moms or to their human owners. They may also bond to other cats. So powerful can such bonds be between individuals that they may show separation anxiety if separated. This is not a bad arrangement until longterm separation through illness or death becomes inevitable. In such cases, cats must be trained to develop new bonds with either other cats (a new kitten, perhaps) or new human acquaintances. In severe cases, antidepressants may be needed to help such formerly bonded cats around this sharp corner of life.

No shelters are suitable in my sisters opinion. Neither is seperating them.

Read Dunning School at Oak Park and Irving

Has anything been decided about this school? Is it going to be a new high school for Bridge, Canty, Dever and Smyser students or a freshman campus for Taft? I've been hard-pressed to find any information.

  • I do not think anything has been publicly decided. CPS and the alderman keep saying it is under review. My guess is that CPS has already made up their mind but wont say until next year or so.

Anyone interested in bartering services? I need my surround sound system hooked up.

I can do petsitting. Trim cat or dogs nails. Dog walks. Hand out business cards or flyers.

  • AprilsAngelsPets 12-year pet care provider

No. I guess i should do that. I just figured since i had the receivers manual and still didn't figure it out i must be doing something wrong. Never had a problem hooking any of this stuff up before! I guess im being lazy. I hate doing stuff around the house like that! Its not a whole system. Its a seperate receiver. The speakers are on their own. Maybe they arent compatable or something weird.

  • AprilsAngelsPets 12-year pet care provider

Thanks inactive. Ill look that info up tomorrow to post. An ex boyfriend gave it to me. Hes kinda jerky like that! Hence hes an ex! I dont think hed purposely give me the speakers knowing they didnt work but i suppose its possible he was just passing em on unaware if they work because he had no use for them since he kinda doesnt own anything he probably didnt have a system to hook them up to.

Found Cat Tabby with white chest and paws male

Grace and Narragansett Ave. Very affectionate. Checking tomorrow if microchipped. Posting on Lost Cats Illinois - Facebook as well. Very nice boy - was very hungry. I bathed his chest and paws so his picture might not be a very good representation. In my home tonight and my own cats are in the basement. Let me know if you or someone you know is missing this guy.

  • Hey Belmont Central. I don't know his age but he will be neutered next Wed and the vet will give me an idea of his age as he will draw blood and won't neuter if he has age-related issues such as kidney etc. I will let you know and would love for you to meet him! My phone is 773 576 5085 Please call and we can arrange a get together!

Vandals on Long again.

Came home yesterday to two holes (quarter sized) in the side of my house on long/warwick. I originally thought something thrown from a car, but, no broken glass or pieces on sidewalk. There was some type of clear liquid splattered, but, not paint. I remember something similar nearby involving paint pellets shot from a car. Could be the same, but, not paint. Could also be the schmuck group of kids who walk home from portage elementary and like to throw rocks and act like punks. Either way, I'll be alerting the police. This will be tough to stop if it's random drive byes. Photos too big eb says.

Pretty discriminatory that a guy a mere 2 years older has his face plasterd online but the other two dont. I remember back in the 90s some guts under 18 were arrested for burning a cross on some interracial couples lawn by montrose and lincoln and they had their faces on the news.

El Cubanito at 2555 N. Pulaski has a fabulous steak sandwich and menu. Now instead of just having a counter and carryouts, they expanded and have really nice dining room. A couple of their specialty side items include straw fries and bubble coke. Owner was a really nice guy, parents from Cuba, business has been around for quite some time.

  • I hear the Cuban sandwich shop will do breakfast and lunch and is the third shop for the family that runs it. BTW a friendly note to the OP, Cindy...in no way was YoJoe's ever a restaurant.

No matter how you feel, we should see this as sad indeed that there is zero concern for fair and logical discourse on this message board. It's really quite shocking that one view only is permitted here on EveryBlock.

Again i agree. But i prefer to be vigilant without holding onto the fear factor. Its possible. Im glad to see your fear is based on some more real dangers these days vs a couple months ago when you were fearing Milo and the plan of white supremacists -- extreme bigots, people with differing opinions -- and their (percieved)plan to enlist young Americans in our neighborhood.

Throwing away dog poo in random garbages

So if my dog drops a D on the lawn and I bag it, is it illegal for me to throw it away in the nearest garbage? I'm not talking about a Dumpster, but a city garbage can. Are these technically the property of the homeowner or the city itself? We all pay for the pickup, right?

I've always been curious about this and never got a definitive answer. I don't want to get into it with someone for throwing...

I've always been curious about this and never got a definitive answer. I don't want to get into it with someone for throwing away my dog poo.

I get why it might be illegal considering it would be an aggravation if people kept randomly filling your garbage up with their disposables. Yet when my friend didn't have garbage cans and called the city about it, they told him until he gets his own to use his neighbors because they are city property.

I have been yelled at for my dog urinating on someone's lawn. I do utilize my yard first thing in the morning and thruought the day for play and to relieve the dog. When on walks, I always pick up poop. I live in Belmont craigin where it seems very few do pick up after although there are aldermanic signs everywhere that encourage pick up in English and Spanish.I really dont think it matters who's garbage can gets who's dogs excriment. Its picked up and disposed of. If someone is crying about it then another can is nearby avoid theirs. As for urination on cans....dogs mark. It is what it is.

I hear everyday how people across on the busy street apartments park in front of our single family homes. The street does not belong to us. It is city property. Garbage cans are city property. How frustrating it is to try and find parking for family on holidays in front of your own home. That irritates me more than the garbage can disposal.
At least there is respect when owners pick up poop. There is none shown to the homeowners that have family over for the holidays and cannot utilize the parking directly in front of their homes.
Some of us were brought up correctly and realize that respect goes a long way!

I do not have a dog but if someone picks up their dog's doo and throws the bag in my garbage can I have no problem with it. I believe they are doing the right thing. But the problem I have is when I open the garage door and find a big pile of "HUMAN" poo left there for me to clean up!!!

It's Illegal To Stick Unstamped Flyers In Mailboxes, But The Post Office Doesn't Care
Section 1725 of Title 18 of the U.S. Code prohibits placing mailable materials like circulars and sales bills with unpaid postage in mailboxes with intent to avoid payment of postage. That means that the Chinese menus and offers for cheap lube jobs that end up in your mailbox might have been placed there illegally.

A couple of the newbies managed to damage the master lock and mechanism, then they couldn't access individual boxes. They were dumping everyone's mail in the common box. There was some back and forth between our management company and the post office as to who was responsible. It took a few weeks to get it fixed.

Mute, I should have mentioned that the phone call was a follow up to a written complaint.

"No Honking" Signs

Does anyone have "No Honking" signs in their alleys?

I really would love to get some put up in the alley behind my home. Many people honk obnoxiously when driving through the intersection. Speed-bumps would be nice too.

  • I honk whenever I leave the alley and am about to cross over the threshold to the street.

I do it because blind spots from the garages at the end of the alley.

Im not really into feeling like dealing with hitting a pedestrian or some dummy riding his/her bike on the side walk.

  • Gonzo, while you do make an effort toward safety, think of two things. (1) Illinois law specifies it is the driver's obligation to yield to pedestrians at alley mouths. In a blind approach the legal requirement is to come to a complete stop before crossing the walk way. Too often...

Gonzo, while you do make an effort toward safety, think of two things. (1) Illinois law specifies it is the driver's obligation to yield to pedestrians at alley mouths. In a blind approach the legal requirement is to come to a complete stop before crossing the walk way. Too often car honkers act like the noise releases them from taking further precaution and they blindly roll out without first stopping. (2) Consider the nearby neighbors. When they bought their houses none of them thought about the random day long, evening, and early morning honkers. Have mercy on them and follow the law.

If your cat goes missing, be sure to check petharbor.com as CACC lists all the animals that come in on that website. They are working with Tree House and PAWS to get the chipped feral cats back to their colonies.

"Cats also hunted down larger mammals, including high numbers of rabbits, weasels, stoats and grey squirrels. But they were very poor at killing rats, having captured only 162 in the survey - probably because the rodents fight back viciously."

The reason people arent seeing rats where these cats are is not because they kill them. Rats are put off by the smell of cat urine (just like people) and move along. So these scare tactics of rats being a threat to humans is invalid if the rats are just moving to a neighbors were there are less cats. So stop using the excuse cats kill rats. Also if a cat is being fed their prey drive is not as strong. Its still there but they can become lazy hunters.

  • We don't invite rats to live in the neighborhood and have set a humane-kill trap (we've eliminated six city rats inside two weeks last month and have no signs of any more outside in the past 10 days). We do have a couple feral cats prowling the area, and still...

We don't invite rats to live in the neighborhood and have set a humane-kill trap (we've eliminated six city rats inside two weeks last month and have no signs of any more outside in the past 10 days). We do have a couple feral cats prowling the area, and still had those rats.
However, I have had some wild (literally) life experiences offshore -- in one such case I had rats scampering around beside my bunk as soon as I snuffed the lights (couldn't keep lights on). Those rats showed NO interest in me; never touched me or took a nibble.
I've never heard of a rat approaching/biting anyone and doubt they would unless trapped and threatened - or diseased. Some small solace: While rats and mice are able to carry the rabies virus in their bodies, they have not been shown to be infected with rabies in wild populations.

    Nikki,
Just as important as having new keys to work the locks on your new place is the quality of locks that are used. I’ve had trouble with Quickset locks (Key resembles Mercedes symbol), and only use Schlage locks on my home. Changing a lock yourself is not a hard thing & can be as simple as 2 screws. A locksmith usually charges $15/tumbler to re-key a lock. If you want to replace the locks, and purchase the materials yourself, consider this. There is a key code on the package of a new lock, Deadbolt & knob can be found in the same package. If you purchase 2 packages with the same key code, one key will work everything.
The reason I prefer Schlage brand is that they come with 2 strike plates. One is double thick and has 3” screws that go through the jamb and into the framing member (2x4) behind the jamb. Those are Much harder to break into, but are also harder to install. You need to chisel out a recess for the deeper strike plate, and pre-drill holes for the 3” screws. If your jambs are metal or there is brick instead of 2x4 behind the jamb, the degree of difficulty increases.significantly.Good luck with your new place,
    Rich

Last week I posted on Chicago's safest and most dangerous neighborhoods based on the murder rate. Although that's a pretty popular way for people to make a determination of a neighborhood's relative safety it's actually a pretty narrow definition. A lot of bad things an happen to people without them getting murdered.

  • Thanks anyway - hope that all the lost dogs find their way home.

  • No, it's an unkept standard schnauzer. I told them to post on FB illinois lost dogs. Sandoval, I know exactly what dog they are talking about. Cute as a button. I hope it finds its way back home soon. Bless her for watching over it.
