Cats Could Be Left Behind

An elderly neighbor is moving and can only take two cats with her. She has indoor and outdoor cats. (I do not let cats outdoors. I do not approve of letting your cat leave the house. This is about someone that is not me.) I am not sure of the actual number of cats she might be forced to leave behind. Some are "patio cats". Anyone know what can be done in this situation? I know about the pet population situation and how everywhere is overcrowded and underfunded. I just can't stand the thought of what is going to happen to the cats she leaves behind.

  • I always said mankind can be a horrible animal. No I take that back, animals don't even act so cruel as some people in this world do, but people like you make it a better place. Hang in there and try to get some help.
    On that note, Happy Thanksgiving

Update, better news. The neighbor who "walked me down the alley" drove up while I was in the yard today. I was expecting an earful and he said he thought of a solution and asked that I only leave the food out during the daytime hours (around noon) and not after dark. I am happy for the turnaround but I am already concerned about the two days he had me and the cats off schedule and frightened. There is one big cat in particular that I am concerned about finding again, the one he frightened off when he confronted me. I also wonder what happened to make him change his mind, if he saw the poor cats hungry and looking for food.
Aside from this I don't think he was the only one throwing my food in the trash. I believe the landlord, where the (original "owner") elderly woman moved away from, has decided he doesn't want the cats near his property. As I say to others who try to help, I will try to keep fighting the good fight.

Post Office on Irving Park/Narragansett

I don't suppose I need to go into detail...however, the Post Office on Irving Park and Narragansett is much to be desired...meaning the employees there are terribly rude and I am not just speaking of one person...most that I have come into contact with...as well as the post man....and can anyone tell me why he wears a towel over his head and eyes? I don't suppose I need to go into detail...however, the Post Office on Irving Park and Narragansett is much to be desired...meaning the employees there are terribly rude and I am not just speaking of one person...most that I have come into contact with...as well as the post man....and can anyone tell me why he wears a towel over his head and eyes? He wears this towel winter, spring, summer and fall. At first I thought it was because of allergies as it was in the springtime when I first noticed it...but it is all seasons. Anyway, I digress...I don't believe anyone ought to lose their job, however, maybe the city can transfer these employees around from area to area...it is usually the first 6 months when they are new that they are polite and helpful....after that...forgetaboutit! As I am writing this my stomach is turning because I have a package to send...I think I will go to the one on Fullerton and Sheffield....that way the rudeness and inefficiency won't affect me so much because it isn't in the area that I represent and live in. Have a good day!

  • We have had the same mail carrier for years. He is family to each of us, a genuine friendly caring man. His name is Jetta.

Too bad the front desk at the post office can't learn a thing or two from him.

  • In my limited experience at this particular post office (3-4 visits tops), I have nothing bad to say about the staff.

Advice Please

I went to a mechanic (won't name them yet) and on the receipt the part was marked with a one in the hundreds column and then a two written over it. I was charged $215 for the part. AutoZone, O'Reilly's, and Maverick's all had it cheaper, for about $126. I went back to the shop and questioned the employee behind the counter. He acted as if I was from another planet. I brought the printouts from the auto stores to show him the price and he said he didn't know what that was. He claimed to buy parts from a reliable distributor and then I saw a Maverick's receipt right next to him. Should I take this to the BBB?

I would try to reach the owner. We use a mechanic who will install parts that we purchase

Anybody have a great pediatrician and OBGYN (and hospital) they would recommend?

I'm looking for a great OBGYN and a good hospital to have my baby at. (I've looked at the hospital reviews and because of them I'm kind of wanting to have my baby in another state at this point.) Please help! I also haven't been able to find a pediatrician or OB with great reviews who is nearby. I'd prefer someone close but am willing to go downtown too. Thank you so much for recommendations! I really appreciate it 😊

  • For an OB/GYN, hands down, I recommend Dr. Micah Garb at Northwestern-Lake Forest. We just delivered our first at Lake Forest in March. I know it is a bit of a drive, ( but if you were looking at going as far as out of state, I imagine you don't...

For an OB/GYN, hands down, I recommend Dr. Micah Garb at Northwestern-Lake Forest. We just delivered our first at Lake Forest in March. I know it is a bit of a drive, ( but if you were looking at going as far as out of state, I imagine you don't mind a bit of a commute.) Long story short, I began seeing Dr. Garb when he was at a private practice in Streetorville. He's fantastic enough that I followed him to the burbs. When choosing a hospital to deliver it, we primarily looked at Swedish, Prentice, and Lake Forest. I, too, was unimpressed with Swedish. Our delivery experience at Lake Forest was hands-down the best it could have been. The staff was amazing, and we felt like we were the only patients there. I was also a high risk pregnancy, and never once doubted any care or advice we received.

As far as a pediatrician, we're going to a Northwestern affiliated office at North & Clyborn. We've seen all but one of the Drs. there, and it's been kinda 'meh'. Definitely haven't clicked with any of the Doctors or been impressed, but not bad enough that I'd say to steer clear. PM me if you have any questions, best of luck, and congratulations!!!

  • Illinois Masonic was fantastic. The level of personal attention and care was incredible, and they don't rush you out of there, unlike Prentiss, which we were warned is baby factory. Their ObGyn faculty group has a lot of great doctors. Dr Melissa Dennis, Dr Popper.

We also highly recommend our pediatrician--Dr Nava Segall. She's with Lurie Children's but sees infants at Illinois Masonic as well.

Exterior back flow valve installment to prevent water in the basement

We are thinking of moving out of state and want to rent out our single family house.
Before that I want to install an exterior back flow valve because we sometimes have water coming out mainly of the shower drain during heavy rains. Not lately after disconecting part of the gutters and letting them drain in the alley but since we will be faraway I want to avoid a flooded basement for both us and the renter. It is my nightmare.
Has anybody done this lately? What was the cost and can you please recomend who did it?
Thanks in advance

There is a heated discussion going on on nextdoor about the development at Belmont and Narragansett. The posts are asking Alderman Villegas about the status of that development which by the way there was a meeting over a year ago about a high end apt and retail development to be built there that til this day sits vacant. The alderman claims that "his office is working with the owner get that meeting scheduled and that the date will be forthcoming"

In one response the person made mention of Alderman Villegas being at Sutherlands bar and one of the owners had told him that Villegas told the owner that a affordable senior housing building was a "done deal". In another post someone said that they spoke to Mr Aliferakis who is part owner of Akton realty and he said that the plans have changed and that the existing building on that corner was going to be rehabbed instead. This alderman ran his campain on being transparent obviously thats not the case.

  • Agnes Groeper Major of Major

The new Senior Housing is going up where Bank of America was on Diversey and Central, I think Villegas missed his chance by dragging his feet.

  • Thats not his ward and don't think that he is dragging his feet I'm sure he has plans for Belmont and Narragansett. He is dragging his feet when it comes to letting everyone know what is really going on there. The comment that was made on next-door about him saying that it's (a done deal) for affordable housing at that corner is very concerning

Dog Lost/Spotted

An older dog was on Major and Belden, very thin, light brown and black, male, collar and no tags. He must be missing for a few days because he was drinking sludge water in the alley. I tried to get clean water for him but he took off. He was at the McDonalds on Fullerton and Central when I lost track of him.

  • Helpful, thank you for trying to help this neglected dog.Maybe put some food in your car in case you see him again.Probably the owner dumped him to the cruel streets which is very inhumane instead of bring him to a shelter. If caught bring him to 16th district. They are very good at helping stays and lost pets.Good luck, I'm sure it's breaking your heart in seeing this poor guy struggling to survive.

  • Thank you so much for trying to help him. It would be good to have some food handy if you see him again. Here's hoping he will come to you.

We are moving to Portage Park soon and we are looking for recommendations on internet providers. We are hoping to avoid the big companies like Comcast and AT&T. Thanks!!

Super fast, affordable small new local company that is competing with the big guys. I have used their service for almost 8 months and all has been excellent thus far - no buffering and a human to attend to your issues without recordings, etc. You buy your own router. I hope they blow the big guys out of the water.

"""Dear Parents/ Guardians and Community Members,
It is with deep sadness that we inform you about a recent loss to our school community. On Saturday, October 14 at a little after 11 am, Mrs. Shelly Magnus, a valued teacher at Belding Elementary, passed away.
Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time. Please join with Belding Staff in our commitment to support our students and the Magnus family during this time of loss.
This loss is sure to raise many emotions, concerns and questions for the entire school, especially our staff and students. Next week we will have a number of counselors at the school to provide grief counseling and support to students and staff. These individuals will be in the building to assist our school community.
Information about the services will be made available as soon as we have it. There will be a family funeral in Indiana first, and sometime later a Chicago celebration of her life at the Irish American Heritage Center.
If your child wishes to attend, we strongly encourage you to accompany him or her to the service. If you or your children wish to send a condolence card to the family you may send it to the school and we will ensure the family receives these.
