Shooting on Lavergne - Neighborhood Watch

We heard 3 gunshots the other night Lavergne and Patterson and there was NOTHING in the news. The only place we saw it was on our ring video doorbell network. You can download the app and get neighborhood notifications (you don't have to have the doorbell) and see video footage from your neighbors. It's a good way to know what's happening close to you.

Some of the neighbors have found this helpful, and wanted to pass it on.

Anywhere near Jeff Terminal is REALLY bad. Just be alert, and if you see one, make noise, yell at them. They will run the other way. Just an FYI. I watched them for over an hour or two around 6 pm Tonite in my alley. Working on my car. They don't want to be around people. So, respect them and rodent problem will be a thing of the past. They can hang in my alley all they want. I welcome them, we need them people, so don't get crazy. Just watch your small animals, as you should in the first place.

  • I live one block away from Gompers Park and we have seen them around here as well. Once I was driving down Pulaski and saw them in Bohemian National Cemetery. (I thought they were dogs at first, and thought "who brings their dogs to a cemetery? LOL)

  • @Alyssa, I had the same experience at Graceland Cemetery. I saw something run by me out of the corner of my eye and thought someone was taking their dog for a walk. Nope, it was a coyote. Apparently a whole pack of them live there and were planted by the city to curb the rat situation.

Despite temperatures dipping down to historic lows, some neglectful pet owners apparently think it's fine to leave their dogs and cats outdoors on these subfreezing winter nights. I'm not sure what they could possibly be thinking - do they really believe their pet's fur will keep them warm?

Adoptive Home Wanted

I am looking for an adoptive forever home for my back gate cat. Why not keep her, you ask. Because I have my cats and if they do not accept her than I have no place for her. I also have dogs and a bird (all on different levels of the house). This cat will NOT be free. The money needed will be used for her vet bills. What I am proposing is that she goes from my alley, to the vet, to your home. She, I say she but that is my impression, has recently become friendly with the extreme cold. I am now able to pet her but she has never been at a vet or in a home that I know of. She will need to be spayed/neutered, tested for feline leukemia/fiv, and worm tested. Portage Park animal hospital accepts the Friends of Animals certificates for reduced spay/neuter, unless you have a relationship with another vet of your choice, or my vet. I am not working and will do a Go Fund Me page to save her if needed.

Anyone who wants to help me save a life can respond to this post. I will supply an email address once I see any responses. I don't currently have a picture but if I can get one I will add it.

  • Once again, not looking for a lot of feedback which is why I am only posting here on the original post. Anyone wondering what happened? Well, last week I got her into a shelter (won't name it) which had good intentions but since she has never been inside a home...

Once again, not looking for a lot of feedback which is why I am only posting here on the original post. Anyone wondering what happened? Well, last week I got her into a shelter (won't name it) which had good intentions but since she has never been inside a home or to a vet (which I had said) she was handled as if I was surrendering a house pet. She freaked out and was then turned away as a "feral". I had no choice other than to bring her back to my alley and hope she would still trust me enough to come back to me. For all of you who are going to say why not take her to Animal Control - have you seen the news? And this was last week before they made the news for overcrowding, plus she was frantic and I didn't want her put down immediately for that. Good news is that she is still coming back to me, friendly but more skittish again. Back to square one. I'm still trying to get her in a shelter (one that I also won't name) where I have taken this kind of cat before and the outcome was "adopted", that is what I was told, and I have to make myself believe is true because you never really know. A cat or dog isn't going to search you out in ten years, like a child who was adopted, and say that you saved, or ruined, their life.

OK, anyone who got this far thanks for caring enough to read this through. I just need to share the heartache that this causes me so that I can remember that there are others out there who care, maybe not on my block or street, but somewhere in the city.

  • Hi Helpful..it sounds like Kitty is a canidate for trap neuter return. There is a group called Cats in my Yard. Along with the Chicago Community Cats Facebook page hopefully you can get some advice/assistance. Tree House (on Touhy and Ridge) sell low cost outdoor shelters and there are also do it yourself instructions online. I agree do NOT call Animal Care and Control.

I am sure a lot of you are not reading this from Belmont/Cragin but if you have friends or family in Belmont/Cragin ask them if they see abandoned/neglected animals out there in the cold. I ask all of you to try and help an animal in need if you can, with food, water, an outside shelter/house, a donation, adoption, something. I can't be the only person that is bothered by this.

One look at why and how zoning has become a focus of property owners.

If this is not behind a pay wall, here's a think piece about how property owner opinions on their rights to have a say in community development evolved. While it doesn't set out to change anybody's opinion, having it in mind helps me understand why I hold certain value judgments. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/03/upshot/zoning-housing-property-rights-nimby-us.html?comments#permid=25419406

How 'Not in My Backyard' Became 'Not in My Neighborhood'
In Seattle, the neighbors don't want apartments for formerly homeless seniors nearby. In Los Angeles, they don't want more high-rises. In San Jose, Calif., they don't want tiny homes. In Phoenix, they don't want design that's not midcentury modern.

She asked me to find help for her to relocate/rehome/rescue (basically save her cats from being abandoned) the cats.

Anyone know what can be done in this situation? I know about the pet population situation and how everywhere is overcrowded and underfunded. I just can't stand the thought of what is going to happen to the cats she leaves behind.

  • Helpful...I know I posted this before, but Tree House can probably help you. Please give them a call and explain the situation.

Previously posted: Please call Tree House Humane Society. They are located at 7225 N. Western, Chicago, IL 60645. Hi goldntreasures

Actually some of these cats have been TNR'd and it was by Tree House. If you are in Montclare I am in "Belmont/Cragin" so this area is called a "dead zone". I have talked to Tree House and they recommended the cats stay in their neighborhood with someone else taking over the feeding (which has become me). The kitten in question is actually being looked out for by two cats that are ear tipped, meaning neither of them can be a parent to the poor baby. That is how kind animals are, looking out for a little orphan among them. This is all at the other end of my block, then the one by my back gate is starting to come around by rolling on the floor and following me at a distance.

I did take one to Harmony House before. I kept calling back to check on her and was told she was adopted, along with the two babies she had shortly after I brought her in. I wondered if they told me that just to get me to stop calling, but hoped it was true. I always question myself and if I really saved her.

AirBNB Cleaning

Is anyone in the area interested in making some money doing some sporadic AirBNB cleaning? It's roughly 30 minutes of work a couple times a month. I'd offer $25 to someone I can trust to stop by and clean.

Unfortunately, there is usually only 1-3 days notice and the cleaning has to be done between 11:00am-2:00pm.

Addison & Central

  • Greetings,

I live right off of Addison and Central. I have housekeeping experience and would be interested in hearing more about this position. I have excellent references that could easily be verified. I would be available immediately. Also, I would be able to work around a last minute cleaning.

    Sincerely,
