My wife and I are looking for a house cleaner to help us clean/turnover a 1 BR/1 BA apartment that we are renting on AirBnB. It is near Western/Armitage. We need someone with a flexible schedule, because the frequency and scheduling of cleanings will vary based on reservations.

Basement Digout

Anyone dug out the basement recently? Looking for ballpark estimated cost for a brick building - all posts about that subject date back to 2014 and I was wondering what is the price now.

  • Local Yocal Logan Square resident since 2000

I have not and was looking to do it. I have heard pricing from 15K - 20K on the low end.

  • I'd love to do the same to my place but haven't gotten any estimates.

  • I had a quote recently (within the last month) and for a 2 foot dig was quoted 80K

    Included in the quote
    Break up slab, dig
    Under pin foundation
    replace beam with steel column
    replace columns with steel
    drainage around the foundation
    water proofing
    vapor barrier
    pour new slab

New gangway concrete as well, (cause mine is in terrible shape)

    Not included
any plumbing work (including sewage line)
    any finish work
    a staircase
Architectural work (this was an additional $6,500)
    Permit fees

Needless to say I need to do some more shopping around. I have recently spoke with someone else who did it. His was between 50-60K

from my research I do not think you will do it for less than 50K unless you really are not going any deeper. I have heard instances where they only go down to the existing footings of your current foundation which will only get you between 4-6" more inches (each house is different)

another thing I have been told by several sources is if you are adding a bathroom the city may have you upgrade your main water service to 1.5" luckily for me mine is already 1.5" as I have heard the water line upgrade is between 15-20K itself

If we choose to do it. I want it to be a significant difference making the investment more worthwhile. We are looking for 9'

I have reached out to a few different places and working on obtaining more estimates now.

One more for the road...

Just wanted to one last time, direct all of the haters to the last vacancy being filled on the south side of Logan Square (the actual square)

And being filled by a big-time bar group. Guess it won't be so empty after all!

Big-time as in being named Chicago bartenders of the year and being responsible for some of the big name bars in a major city.

"Big-time" here meant not a new group trying it out but local star power coming to close off the empty retail space lining the square. I don't know of many "big-time national" bar groups outside of chains.

But the morale of the story was to everyone here who has been griping and pitching doom and gloom about the empty storefronts around the square. Now there will only be the small one between Webster's and Reno. And the lineup of options just TOUCHING the square will be:

    Lula
    UNKNOWN BAR/RESTAURANT **NEW**
    Billy Sunday's
    Merchant **New**
    La Boulangerie
    Webster's
    Reno

That's a pretty solid core. If you extend one block you add in Mini Mott (New), Bixi (New), Taste of Havana (New), and if you stretch it then Big & Littles (New), Twain (New), Taco Bell Cantina (New)

I'm just tired of everyone ragging on the "sorry state" of the area...it is BOOMING with new options and filled up storefronts. I'm not talking about to whom they are targeting their offerings, but simply that empty storefronts are being filled...a positive in my book.

Thoughts on Everyblock closing down...It is 'time' for me to leave anyway....

I have depended on Everyblock for recommendations of workers, neighborhood news, crime in the area, good news postings, pictures of package stealing...and lost dogs....

I followed GoFundMe pages that they recommended.
I donated to school because it was posted here...

But it is time to leave for me...look what I have BECOME????

I read the posts of people that do not have 'kindness' (something we really need these days..) towards their neighbors posts...and I NOW go after 'a troll' when before I would 'just let it go' ...recently to the point of reporting HIM to Everyblock to monitor his comments. (I have never gone to Everyblock before...)
(His 'nasty' comments 'hurt my feelings'....how did I GET to this point???)
Bart doesn't post his amazing pictures any more; and people go after him when he is just posting 'the first to know'...(I'm certainly not the first to know...)
I WILL MISS the kind posts that I have received...and the people who I have truly enjoyed their threads...
but I now won't miss the 'Everyblock' - the one I used to know..as it is no more...
Thanks to the neighbors who helped me; thanks to the neighbors who cared; and thanks to the neighbors that bought me a 'neighborhood' to share with them..

  • Thanks NW-Sider for the PDF tips. Actually I was doing that early this evening and spent about 30 minutes saving probably 75 threads or so. Lots of good information on Everyblock that I'll miss.

And I agree with many other comments here, Kittyhop. You seem like a really nice person from all the posts and comments I've seen from you in the past. You're definitely a good neighbor!! :) Lots of other nice people here also who I'll hopefully see posting on other neighborhood social media.

Crime Watch

For residents on the 3700 Block of Richmond and Waveland...A middle aged/older white female with short cut blond/brown hair was seen casing cars on the block and trying door handles. She was wearing a black backpack. My roommate was walking our dog and confronted her, asking her if the car she was touching was hers and she said it was not. I think she got freaked out and walked away. If you live on this block, be sure to lock your car doors!

Petition to stop a cell tower from going up on the corner of Wrightwood and Ridgeway in Logan

Someone started a petition to push Alderman Santiago (31st ward) in Logan Square to stop a cell array from being constructed by T-Mobile on top of a residential building at the corner of Wrightwood and Ridgeway Ave. I live down the street and would rather not see it from my window.
Here it is if anyone wants to read it over and sign it if you agree that it would be an eyesore/annoyance on a residential street:

Alderwoman Santiago, stop the T-Mobile tower at 3714-16 W Wrightwood Ave.
Target: 31st Ward Alderman Milly Santiago Region: United States of America Please note: While we appreciate support from people who live anywhere, signatures from residents in Logan Square are the most helpful. Please share with anyone you know in Logan Square, specifically those near the corner of Wrightwood and Ridgeway!

I yelled at them hoping I’d scare them off and when that failed, I yelled for help. Several people simply stood by and watched. I do know at least 2 people called 911 — so if you’re out there and you did that, thank you. To the lone guy who sought me out to make sure I was ok, thank you. To the two guys across the street who watched two men throw me to the ground, steal my purse and then steal my car, I hope this never happens to you. But if it does, I pray someone helps you though you did not help me. At any rate, just wanted to give everyone the heads up to be alert. Police report has been filed. Credit cards have been canceled. Locks have been changed. And if anyone on Everyblock did see something they could share with police to catch these guys, that would be appreciated. Stay safe out there!

  • catlady for the love of cats, lets get along!

oh man im so sorry to hear that!! I hate when people rather stand by and oooh and aah or record with their phones and not do nothing. Sorry those idiots just stood there while you were assaulted. Hope your ok.

  • Back when I was mugged by two nervous teens, one holding a gun to my ribs I was happy no one intervened to frighten him into pulling his itchy trigger finger. Losing a car, phone, purse etc. is far cheaper than a gut wound. Had I been CCW they would have had another gun too. It happens quickly and suddenly and when you least expect it. Thankfully OP was not injured. Cars can be replaced.

You may have seen a number of trees that have been planted in the parkways of many of the bikerdike homes and surrounding areas. While it is great to beautify the neighborhood and invest in the long-term benefits of trees, the city missed the mark on this effort. While, gator bags have been placed around the trees, these only provide water for 5-11 hours, not days or weeks. The past month has been quite hot and with little rain, many of the trees are already loosing their leaves, signifying they will not make it.

The residents at the bickerdike homes thought the city was watering the trees. They should have been informed about the new planting and to take part in the care of the trees, but they do not have access to exterior water to help care for them. Our neighbor showed us that her water spigot had been covered over with a lock that does not make water accessible. We tried to water the trees, but being two homes down, our hose does not reach.
If you have newly planted trees and a hoes long enough to reach, please help water them.

  • my friends have found that those pocket hoses fall apart - have you used yours more than one year? I use 100 ft. + of hose.....umph ! But I do not use the old rubber ones....too heavy for me to schlep to the garage for the winter - too bulky...

But I do not use the old rubber ones....too heavy for me to schlep to the garage for the winter - too bulky too....I purchased the metal encased hoses AND the skinny hoses....but with the rain we have had these two years - I have not had to water much - I have very big trees in the yard and the parkway - that helps....all my plants are happy....
Now about the horses - I was thinking about them trying to pull heavy loads thru a field....so much resistance ( yes I took Physics in school ) - . But thanks for the suggestion about the hoses.....

  • Tomorrow is another day Happy resident of North Park Village

Susy D - The hose lasted at least a year with heavy use during the year (watering the huge tree in the parkway especially :-)). However, last year, the building was sold, so don't know if it's still in use.

I love EveryBlock and Next Door, but they are very different.

I'm so sorry to be losing EveryBlock. I'm already a member of Next Door, but that is only for communicating to neighbors very close to me. I like getting information on other neighborhoods as well. As an animal welfare business owner, volunteer and advocate, my desire to help pets and their people is not just limited to my own neighborhood. I currently follow 22 different EveryBlock neighborhoods. Next Door won't allow me to do that.

So bummed. Thanks EveryBlock for all you've done to connect people.

Seems that you can access the other areas postings in a search, but aren't able to receive announcements or postings from there, and are not able to post questions there. Also, In the a newsletter there are things like dog training and moving sales, but nothing like this kind of discussion, and no postings of news like new restaurants, or things going on in the area. Instead of baiting my backyard, the city baited the alley for the 3rd time in two months. I am going crazy. The rats are hanging out in my backyard and are setting my sensor light off during the night. Is there anything I can do? Does anyone know of an effective rat poison? Talking to my neighbors is useless since they don't want to be told what they "shouldn't do on their property".

Gas Pipe Construction = High Gas Bill

We just got finished with the whole city of chicago replacing our gas lines on our street. Something they've been doing all over the city I've noticed. And now I just got my 1st gas bill since then and it's the highest I've ever been billed. Even compared to my winter bills in Jan & Feb for the past 4 yours, it's never been this high. And this is for last month of June so I KNOW that we did not use our gas that much. Has anyone else experienced this? I tried calling people's gas and I waited 2 hours and 20 min for a supervisor and no one ever answered. I finally hung up. Ugh.

  • robin in WRP I support a 28th Amendment 4Free & Fair Elections!

Our monthly bill from People's (we're on the "budget" plan) went up $45 this month

  • Electric heat is more expensive than gas. I used energy efficient heaters to supplement my gas space heaters, still cost a lot of money.

Nextdoor and Comcast Blows.

What a horrible company and a terrible “substitute” for everyblock. Boycotting Nextdoor. I will never join that bullsh@! website.

  • KPG Logan Square resident since 1987

Consider contacting Nextdoor and telling them how you feel they could improve their site? They would want to hear. I actually like Nextdoor because posters are not as anonymous and therefore there is not as much nastiness going on. It is usually more about information rather than editorializing/complaining:)

  • My favorite follow on Twitter is @bestofnextdoor . My one parting thought about EB that I found very ironic is the code that runs this site thinks the word neighbor is misspelled.

  • The Logan Square sites on Nextdoor have almost no content. Hopefully that will change when people migrate.
