Church parking

Seems like this makes crossing Logan even more dangerous than usual when you can't see oncoming traffic at all.

  • Peter W. 20-yr Logan Sq Resident

Glen, I always see cars being driven faster on Fullerton than on Armitage. On Logan Boulevard I see car drivers accelerate when it is clear and open.

The BEST solution to the blvd. parking situation, IMHO, would be:

    * to REQUIRE CHURCHES (by ordinance)
    * to have orange-vested parking monitors
    * with safety (light) wands
    * standing posts
    * at each end of each row/block of parked cars
    * on every block where cars are parked
    * from the time the first car parks to the time the last car leaves
    * with mandatory $500 fines per violation per side per block
    * strictly limit church related parking to Sat. & Sun. 9 am-2 pm
    * have the city tow trucks on the blvd. at the end of the permissive parking period
    * and REQUIRE each church to carry additional personal injury insurance coverage of $5 Million/$10 Million and property damage coverage of $250,000 specifically to cover deaths/injuries/property damage caused or contributed to by church-going parkers.

The monitors can direct traffic around the blockages ... and like crossing guards, stop traffic to assist peds trying to cross the street.

OR - close the main blvd. to ALL vehicular traffic on Sat. and Sun. ... with the tow trucks standing by.

BTW, Cyclists - PLEASE ride on the frontage roads (which are called "parkways," I believe). And when you ride the parkways, PLEASE hug the NON-PARKING side of the street and NOT the parking side where the cars are.

Cyclists tend to wear dark/black clothing at night, with no lights or a little dinky light. You CANNOT be seen, especially when you are riding up against the parked cars under the dim streetlights. You are nothing more than a shadow at night. Also, be aware that a person's (driver's) night vision greatly diminishes with age. You don't have to be 99 years old to suffer from this - vision weakening and eye diseases begin as early as 40 years of age.

Clayco Armitage and Milwaukee

Anyone notice the cool towers at Armitage and Milwaukee? Looked it up and the plans look nothing like the current sate of the build.

Lost Cat in Avondale/Logan Sq.

Help!!! Our cat, Esteban, escaped from the house on the morning of November, 21. He's a black, white and tan tabby with an underbite and white paws. He lives in the W. George and N. Sawyer.
Please help.....
Call anytime day or night (419) 419-8691 or (917) 974-2425

Thank you....

  • Put some of his food and litter box outside. They can track the familiar scent (especially used litter) and that may help bring him home. I hope you find him soon!

  • Good neighbor! I have lived on Troy St. since 1990 and love it!

I hope he comes home. I understand how upsetting this is. Good luck!

  • He is gorgeous. You can also try putting a trap out with a blanket over it, with some food like tuna and sardines. Someone had suggested this to me when my cat got out. It did take about a day or two but I caught her. Good luck and please keep us posted.

Ronny's Bar Project/Golden Teardrops Happening?

Anyone in the know know what happened or is going to happen with the Ronny's bar conversion that was planned by some of the Longman and Eagle/Parsons folks? They were going to totally rehab Ronny's bar. I see they initially applied for permits back in June and July...as referenced below...but there seems to have been no activity since. I'm curious if they're still going to move ahead. It would be nice to have that eyesore renovated.

(Near the ends of these types of projects, there are so many things left in the hands of the city, city inspectors, it's hard to know when to post an update, as we ourselves wait for all of the unknowns to reveal themselves. I hope the gap in responding wasn't too frustrating!)

That said, I'm please to report that we are officially open!

Please do stop in, if only to poke around and see the place. And ask for me while there, if I'm around I'd happily meet any of you in person and discuss the project in more detail.

Thank you all so very much for the continued patience and support in bringing this business to life. It has been a long, long process - for sure - but we are very happy with the results and are so excited to share it with the neighborhood.

My husband and I stopped in with our toddler this morning, and Jason & the rest of the staff were delightful (as was the beautiful space & breakfast options). Hoping we can stop in again ASAP for dinner/drinks and hope this fall/winter goes by in a blink so we can check out the rooftop!

Home repair scams

There are some guys driving around in a big shinny new bright blue pick up truck asking if you want any home repairs (foundations/cement work). One guy comes out of the truck and ask people who are outside working on their house. He comes up to you very nicely like he knows you. He was carrying a black folder we assume to write people estimates. We said no and they left. There is no name on the truck and the back plate on the truck has a darken plastic cover over it so you can not read the plate number. Male 30's dark hair buzz cut.

  • so what's the scam part?

    what happens next?

  • Scam is they either do the work, and its super shotty, and they have your money, or they will case your house. Classic scam and has been going on for a long time. Google scams like this, not hard to find.

Scam? Peoples Energy Bill??

I live at the Drake/Armitage Block and 3 people (one guy, 2 women) just came to my house asking to see a copy of my People's Gas energy bill. Told them no. They told me if they don't look at it my prices will increase sky rocking next month. Is this a new scam going around?

  • Ms. Wicker KidZ

Don't do this even the people who call and say they can lower your electricity or gas bill it's not true. I fell for this scam and started seeing my utility bills strange big very big.
What they do is they add there fake company onto your bill so now on top of your real bill you will now
    owe let's pretend Blue Star
    Electric also. I was angry
but I finally had them removed after along fight.
    These companies are fake
    don't fall for it.

  • chi, I disagree.....don't hand them anything....don't even open the door!

Yet another stray package....

Hello all,

I figured I'd give it a try. If you live in the vicinity of Maplewood and Logan, and received an unexpected package, about 12" x 12" x 4" (cardboard box) addressed to the last name Martin, could you message me? I know it's a long shot, but it was an eBay purchase and USPS shows it as having been delivered to the front door. (And if you're the person who stole it, I hope you have a 16mm film projector because otherwise it's junk to you...)

Thanks,

Jeff

Then I got a message from LL Bean saying they had received my return. I asked, what return? Turns out UPS SAID they had delivered my package, but never did. Instead, it was somewhere in their warehouse or truck and they returned it. I wonder if something similar happened to you. I have had packaged delivered by UPS for years, I am friends with the driver even and this has never happened. Best of luck finding your package or at least learning its fate.

  • i talked to the delivery person yesterday and let her know what's going on. having my packages shipped to work. hope the idiot who got mine enjoys their magnifiying readers and hand-carved mexican wrestler.

  • Badger on Logan Chicago since 1988

It is likely stolen, but I have had at least one package that showed "delivered" on the USPS website that was in fact at the post office all along. When I asked how this could happen, blank stares. Could be a mixup, but I wonder if there are productivity targets to meet, not to mention the inconvenience of filling out a little card to leave for you....

Found a pup wandering the Chase/Bubbleland parking lot this morning at 10am. He’s about 50lbs, Black/white/grey with white paws. Seems like a shepherd/lab/hound mix. Had a collar but no name/contact.

Let’s find this little buddy his family!

It was sad and humbling watching someone die in front of you in the middle of the street.
Call CPD in Lo Squ or Hermosa if you have any details about this accident. I havene't seen the story in any social media or news outlet to date. Sad.

Suspicious Activity

Hi all,

I think there is a man casing the homes on the 2900 block of Wisner. He rang my doorbell on Tuesday evening, but had left my porch by the time I came to the door. I saw him pacing in front of my house and talking on his phone. Yesterday he rang again. When I answered the door, he asked me if we have Comcast cable and internet. When I answered “yes,” he said “Then I can’t sell you anything” and left. I didn’t take a good look at him. He was an Asian man with medium to heavy build. He was wearing light colored clothes.

  • Bonnie L. Braverman Logan Square Lover

If you are him again call the police. Don't answer your door unless you know who is behind the closed door. Be very careful and keep us posted.

  • You can also request 'suspicious activity' on you block by calling the police station and police cars will make extra trips down your block. (If you re close to a school, that helps in the call.) Do call because remember 'if it doesn't feel right, than is is mostly likely NOT right.." We watch out for each other..

Stray cat problem

I have a stray cat that consistently sits on top of my car parked in my carport. Normally this wouldn't bother me but it's using my hood as a bathroom and a scratch pad. I intend to trap and bring to animal control unless someone has another suggestion.

  • PAWS has traps available. You can put a refundable deposit down and pick up the trap. You can then take the cat (in the trap) to Paws in Little Village for neutering or spaying. The cost is $40. That includes rabies shot, revolution flea and tick as well as a microchp and ear tipping.

  • There is a Facebook group called Chicago Community Cats..lots of very cat savvy on it who deal with strays and ferals.

The other family in our nanny share is moving away so we are looking for another family in Logan Square to share our nanny with.

We have a 9 month old, but the nanny is experienced with children of all ages.

The nanny works full time. She does an excellent job engaging the kids, taking them to classes and events, communicating with us, etc. All around great.

Please contact me directly if you are interested or have any questions.

Kittyhop in Logan Square, I was standing at my rear kitchen window while on an important phone call, when I saw the perpetrator inside my truck. I yelled out as loud as I could and pounded on my window, which startled both the customer service representative and the a-hole in my truck. I ran out my backdoor towards my truck when he ran down the alley while clutching his, what looked like, a gun peering out of his shirt. I had left my vehicle unlocked (not any more), just to avoid damage to my vehicle in situations like this.

  • WOW!!That is quite something...and yes, scary that he might have had a gun....

(The guy from the service that jumped my car today had a gun in his belt..that ISN"T why I gave him a tip however...)< that's a joke...but he did have a gun..

Dog Owners Be Warned!

Please be aware there is rat poison in front of 2247 N Spaulding. This building is located on Spaulding between Belden and Palmer. The poison is in and around the planter boxes, right next to the sidewalk.

Please be careful and keep your dogs and kids away from this building/area.

We spent all night at the emergency animal hospital because a homeowner chose to be thoughtless and place poison in such a public space.

  • Hi Barbs, If you're responding to Mike’s comment - it’s not rat poison at that address.

  • If you see rat poison, instead of calling the city, just get a broom and sweep it up. It's not that difficult. Don't treat the 311 system like the front desk at your hotel. Just do it.

We tried to have Sparkie come live with us, but she’s afraid of our cats. We are trying to find Sparkie a new home with no dogs where she is the only cat – lizards, fish, and birds probably OK. She is a sweet girl who loves snuggling with humans of all sizes, she just doesn’t like roommates with tails. If you don’t think you can be her new person, please feel free to pass this post to anyone who you think might be interested.

Thanks
Amy

Thank you for being willing to help! Sometimes acclimating a cat to a new home can take a little time and needs to be done in a particular way when there are other resident cats. The new cat needs to be confined to a room where she can assess her new surroundings. Items, e.g., blankets, beds, between resident cats and new cat need to be introduced to the others. After some time and the new cat feels comfortable in "her" room, they can be allowed to see each other from a distance. New cat can be introduced to other parts of the house while the residents are confined, etc. It can be a slower than desired process but it can work out. I'm sharing in the hopes you weren't aware like may people and can then re-try the introduction. Thank you again for your kind-heartedness!

Carla is right, it can often take a ton of patience in bringing in a new animal. I just adopted 2 kittens about 5 weeks ago and it hasn't been easy for me mainly because I, like other humans want things to happen faster than fur creatures actually need. I'm definitely learning patience. I did exactly as Carla says above. It took 10 days to get Sammy kitten to come out from under a dresser in his room. About another week before he was able to leave that room. At least another week before he found his favorite spots to sleep in the house and finally he is playing with the other cats...but, he still runs from me! I've wanted to give up a few dozen times but the two kittens are bonded and at least Sammy is now comfortable with his fur brothers. But gosh, it does take some time. Cats DO adjust in due time. Hoping you give Sparkie more time? Its so hard to find new homes considering there are so so many animals out there needing homes. Best of luck to you!

Paint thinner smell

our house started smelling very strongly of paint thinner yesterday. We had the gas company come by and they did find a small leak in the dryer connections and they capped it off. We aired out the house and hoped it would clear. This morning the strong smell is back again. They are digging up the sewers near us and I'm wondering if that has anything to do with it. Is anyone else having this problem? We are near Addison and kedzie.

Lincoln Towing Grabs a Car!

The Lincoln Park Bandits (Towing) in action on a Sunday AM at the Dollar Store next to The Cozy Diner on Milwaukee/California.

After watching the tow truck driver, yank the front axle of this sedan from the parking space, dragging this car so he could hook it up and take it, I decided to record the rest of his 25 second rip off..You can see in the video that the driver saw me taking pictures of his grab on the way out...he waved at me. I waved back with a finger salute.

Beware where you park, that's the bottom line here.
