New Parkway Trees Please Help Water

You may have seen a number of trees that have been planted in the parkways of many of the bikerdike homes and surrounding areas. While it is great to beautify the neighborhood and invest in the long-term benefits of trees, the city missed the mark on this effort. While, gator bags have been placed around the trees, these only provide water for 5-11 hours, not days or weeks. The past month has been quite hot and with little rain, many of the trees are already loosing their leaves, signifying they will not make it.

The residents at the bickerdike homes thought the city was watering the trees. They should have been informed about the new planting and to take part in the care of the trees, but they do not have access to exterior water to help care for them. Our neighbor showed us that her water spigot had been covered over with a lock that does not make water accessible. We tried to water the trees, but being two homes down, our hose does not reach.
If you have newly planted trees and a hoes long enough to reach, please help water them.

  • yep Susy D... in my case it was three milk cans (and me) per haul on the bed of an ancient tractor... multiple trips... with a lunch break in there and a late supper afterwards.

If anyone DOES use mulch, don't go crazy with it. Mulch should not be piled 12" around the tree base. You should just cover the GROUND with the mulch. The roots of a tree need water AND air.

House cleaner recommendations for AirBnB?

My wife and I are looking for a house cleaner to help us clean/turnover a 1 BR/1 BA apartment that we are renting on AirBnB. It is near Western/Armitage. We need someone with a flexible schedule, because the frequency and scheduling of cleanings will vary based on reservations.

Hi all. Give Karla Rowe 219.201.2122 a call. She cleans lots of AB&B’s on Division&downtown. She also does residential 1X p/w(me)or whatever you need! Her prices are lower than what a lot of folks charge&she’s super good&reliable. Best of luck!

I love EveryBlock and Next Door, but they are very different.

I'm so sorry to be losing EveryBlock. I'm already a member of Next Door, but that is only for communicating to neighbors very close to me. I like getting information on other neighborhoods as well. As an animal welfare business owner, volunteer and advocate, my desire to help pets and their people is not just limited to my own neighborhood. I currently follow 22 different EveryBlock neighborhoods. Next Door won't allow me to do that.

So bummed. Thanks EveryBlock for all you've done to connect people.

Alicia

  • Barbs hey you kids, get off my lawn!

On Nextdoor, I am "following" a dozen neighborhoods, although they're all adjacent to me. I hate the categorization on Nextdoor,, not sure I'll every adopt it as my primary source.

  • I will definitely sign up for Next Door.

Carjacked on Fullerton at Noon on 7/14

I do know at least 2 people called 911 — so if you’re out there and you did that, thank you. To the lone guy who sought me out to make sure I was ok, thank you. To the two guys across the street who watched two men throw me to the ground, steal my purse and then steal my car, I hope this never happens to you. But if it does, I pray someone helps you though you did not help me. At any rate, just wanted to give everyone the heads up to be alert. Police report has been filed. Credit cards have been canceled. Locks have been changed. And if anyone on Everyblock did see something they could share with police to catch these guys, that would be appreciated. Stay safe out there!

Comcast to end hyperlocal site EveryBlock, agrees to send users to rival Nextdoor
Comcast is pulling the plug on EveryBlock, the Chicago-based hyperlocal news site it revived four years ago. The website, which features blurbs about restaurant closings, building break-ins and community events, will go dark July 19, with a link steering EveryBlock users to sign up with Nextdoor, a rival hyperlocal platform.

I read the posts of people that do not have 'kindness' (something we really need these days..) towards their neighbors posts...and I NOW go after 'a troll' when before I would 'just let it go' ...recently to the point of reporting HIM to Everyblock to monitor his comments. (I have never gone to Everyblock before...)
(His 'nasty' comments 'hurt my feelings'....how did I GET to this point???)
Bart doesn't post his amazing pictures any more; and people go after him when he is just posting 'the first to know'...(I'm certainly not the first to know...)
I WILL MISS the kind posts that I have received...and the people who I have truly enjoyed their threads...
but I now won't miss the 'Everyblock' - the one I used to know..as it is no more...
Thanks to the neighbors who helped me; thanks to the neighbors who cared; and thanks to the neighbors that bought me a 'neighborhood' to share with them..

Petition to stop a cell tower from going up on the corner of Wrightwood and Ridgeway in Logan

Someone started a petition to push Alderman Santiago (31st ward) in Logan Square to stop a cell array from being constructed by T-Mobile on top of a residential building at the corner of Wrightwood and Ridgeway Ave. I live down the street and would rather not see it from my window.
Here it is if anyone wants to read it over and sign it if you agree that it would be an eyesore/annoyance on a residential street:

Alderwoman Santiago, stop the T-Mobile tower at 3714-16 W Wrightwood Ave.
Target: 31st Ward Alderman Milly Santiago Region: United States of America Please note: While we appreciate support from people who live anywhere, signatures from residents in Logan Square are the most helpful. What if you want to ask a question to people near your hood, like in Bucktown, Logan Square or Humbolt Park, if you have been designated as North Wicker Park, and also want to get the news or postings from those areas (the area that I am in, in Everyblock encompasses a wider area)? Seems that you can access the other areas postings in a search, but aren't able to receive announcements or postings from there, and are not able to post questions there. Also, In the a newsletter there are things like dog training and moving sales, but nothing like this kind of discussion, and no postings of news like new restaurants, or things going on in the area. It seems all very bland and much more like personal adds.

Instead of baiting my backyard, the city baited the alley for the 3rd time in two months. I am going crazy. The rats are hanging out in my backyard and are setting my sensor light off during the night. Is there anything I can do? Does anyone know of an effective rat poison? Talking to my neighbors is useless since they don't want to be told what they "shouldn't do on their property".

Gas Pipe Construction = High Gas Bill

We just got finished with the whole city of chicago replacing our gas lines on our street. Something they've been doing all over the city I've noticed. And now I just got my 1st gas bill since then and it's the highest I've ever been billed. Even compared to my winter bills in Jan & Feb for the past 4 yours, it's never been this high. And this is for last month of June so I KNOW that we did not use our gas that much. Has anyone else experienced this? I tried calling people's gas and I waited 2 hours and 20 min for a supervisor and no one ever answered. I finally hung up. Ugh.

  • robin in WRP I support a 28th Amendment 4Free & Fair Elections!

Our monthly bill from People's (we're on the "budget" plan) went up $45 this month

  • Electric heat is more expensive than gas. I used energy efficient heaters to supplement my gas space heaters, still cost a lot of money.

What a horrible company and a terrible “substitute” for everyblock. Boycotting Nextdoor. I will never join that bullsh@! website.

  • KPG Logan Square resident since 1987

Consider contacting Nextdoor and telling them how you feel they could improve their site? They would want to hear. I actually like Nextdoor because posters are not as anonymous and therefore there is not as much nastiness going on. It is usually more about information rather than editorializing/complaining:)

  • My favorite follow on Twitter is @bestofnextdoor . My one parting thought about EB that I found very ironic is the code that runs this site thinks the word neighbor is misspelled.

  • The Logan Square sites on Nextdoor have almost no content. Hopefully that will change when people migrate.

The catalytic converter on my 2004 car was stolen sometime during the night last night. I went out to my car this morning, and found it was gone. Be Careful! Car alarms don't sound when this is done to a car - they saw off the converter under the car. My mechanic said it takes them about a minute to do it. Yikes!

We all need to VOTE for people who don't close shelters and mental health facilities. We also need to realize that a good portion of these people just wants to do drugs and be on the street. You can't make them get help. The one in front of the Church at Wrightwood tried to attack me and my 4-month-old. He chased us and grabbed the stroller. Broad daylight, no one came to my aid. Lot's of people out it was a Saturday. I called the police not sure if they even showed up.
I am a foster mom, that's how I help out, I try to save the kids. This case involves a mom who was 8 months pregnant and didn't even know. She and her husband have lived happily in tent camps for 12 years. They were interviewed a few years ago bragging that they love it. Mom is a prostitute and even saw clients while in the hospital, PREGNANT! and got drugs into the hospital. Every day of the pregnancy she did, Coke, Heroin, Weed, Alcohol, and cigs. Baby went through withdrawal. They've been arrested 5 times each for prostitution, drugs, theft, trespassing etc. Dad has 8 kids from 3 moms, one is on the way 6 mos after the one I have. This is the reality of the situation folks. Don't go up and talk to any of them while alone. Tim, you can make bags of food, clothing, blankets and the like and drop them off if you really want to help them. Just saying hi does nothing unless you come with supplies, housing, drug treatment, physch services and a job. Good luck. Vote for Judges that don't let these people back out on the street a million times. Vote for a Mayor and Governor that don't close shelters and clinics.

  • Ms. Logan, very scary for you - glad you are OK.

As I came home this evening, there was a guy wearing a bright yellow work shirt, a tool belt and hat bent down trying to unlock my neighbor's bike.

I don't know my neighbor very well, but the bike owner is a female, so the fact that there was a man trying to unlock her bike, made me question what was going on. I simply asked him what he was doing and he came up with some dumb story about his friend asked him to do something... he was drunk. Oh your friend? Can you call her, because she's actually my friend and you're trying to steal her bike.

The bike is locked on a fence in a fenced in yard, so this guy was fairly ballsy because it was 6:30 in the evening in broad daylight with A LOT of foot traffic. I let everyone in ear shot know that he was a thief.

We live on the busy intersection of Palmer and Kimball.

Great! It's good to hear there are still people like me in the neighborhood. I would've did the same thing DD. Your husband is someone I'd hangout with. I wish we can clone more neighbor's such as us to be more vigilant and aware. No need to confront.... or on the side of caution but, just saying something is good enough. Great neighbors like you make Logan square a better place.

Construction workers parking on zoned/permit streets

Does anyone know what the rules are, if any, regarding construction workers parking on streets with permit parking? A quick search on the city website and I was only able to find information on parking for city workers. My street is permit parking and there is currently an 8 unit building going up. Every day there are easily 10-15 construction worker vehicles parked on my street. They just put their yellow vests in the driver's side window and I've never seen them get ticketed. They are taking up all the free parking on the street and it's frustrating.

  • Tim

I will bring it up with my doctor. I'm not sure entitlement is something I understand in myself.

  • Bottom line: a yellow vest on a seat or on a driver's side window is not a parking permit.

The temorary city permit for contractor applies only to temporary vehicles like cement trucks and definitely not worker's cars.

No, an "I Support The FOP" sticker or police memorial license plates will not get you out of a moving violation, let alone a parking ticket.

Yes, you are entitled if you believe you are above the law.

No one wants to be thought of as a cheap date, but everyone loves a deal. In the age of dating apps, this is more important than ever. Due to the proliferation of misrepresentative selfies or inflated Tinder profiles, you're likely destined for a lot of mediocre first dates.

Classical Guitarist for Wedding

Hi there - I am trying to see if anyone out there knows of a classical guitarist that I can hire for my wedding in September. I'm looking for someone who can play a few of the common wedding progression songs as well as current/modern songs with a classical/renaissance flair. Not sure if that makes sense. Basically I need someone to play some background music before the ceremony and at first it sounds like a beethoven but then you realize it's radiohead! Well, if you exist or know of someone. Please forward me their info. Greatly appreciated!!!!

Building Code Violations

So the condo building we just moved into was just served with some building violations dating back to the original construction in the mid 2000s, mainly with ventilation. Does anybody have any experience in working with the city to correct/challenge these, or know of a good lawyer who could go about collecting this information?

Logan Square has seen lots of brazen illegal cut corners developer greed. 20 yrs ago Virgil Tiran (VLT Inc) rehabbed brick six flats and sold units as condos. (link to TRIBUNE story below). Tiran illegally added basement condos without necessary zoning change and no building permit for illegal construction. Eventual City lawsuits (no kosher inspection / certificate of occupancy for illegal units), contributions by developer to local Alderman (Rey Colon) and Zoning Committee chairman Alderman William Banks "to help make problems go away", and some clout: Patti (Mell) Blagojevitch wife of Governor Rod was real estate agent selling condos for Tiran in another new construction project on Belmont near Chicago River. City inspectors and Tiran associates were indicted in Operation CROOKED CODE. http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2005-03-12/news/0503120109_1_condo-couples-checks-and-balances
