Metal & Iron Stairs Repair - any recommendations?

Hello, I've been having difficulty finding any contractors in Chicago who perform repair and maintenance on metal/iron stairs. We have a landing that's rusted through and need to replace it. Does anyone have any recommendations? Deck contractors I've spoken with only recommend to demolish the metal/iron stairs and build it all new wooden.

Furniture donation?

In an effort to make our spare bedroom less of a hoarder's cave, we are looking to get rid of some furniture we've outgrown (mostly baby's room furniture). We have a glider chair, changing table, and a few other pieces that are clean and in usable condition. Anybody know a good place to donate where these could go to new moms or families who would appreciate them?

  • Just a heads up, I contacted Humble Design Chicago and they are no longer accepting furniture donations.

  • Thanks for the update, Katie! I reached out to my contact at Humble Design Chicago who confirmed the warehouse is pretty full of big furniture items but they remain in need of the following household goods, if anyone is looking to unload:

-Kitchen- any small appliances (microwaves, toasters, crock pots), dishes, pots/pans, baking sheets, cutting boards, utensils, placemats, etc.
    -Bathroom- towels, trinkets, shower curtains
-Knick Knacks- vases, candles, baskets, book ends, etc.
    -Linen- sheets, comforters, bed skirts

Cubs opening day

The Cubs opener had a fly over of four F-16's from the 93rd fighter squadron based in Homestead, Florida.

  • d3 NOH

Probably a hundred grand + as they we're practicing for it the day prior too

  • My understanding is that pilots have to regularly log flight hours, and so often times this is just integrated into their required practice.

Seeking Recommendations for Furnace Repair Service Company

Can anyone recommend a trustworthy and reasonably priced HVAC repair service?

  • I second Deljo

  • Spyros at A Climate Source. I think I found him on here when Deljo (who I had used before too) couldn't get an emergency appointment scheduled for 6 days. (Furnace motor for a tenant stopped in -20.) Since then all my business has gone to Spyros. I've met his whole crew over the years and like them all. Good pricing too.

    sad, really.

    good luck.

  • I was never impressed by Danny’s. It is/was on the expensive side for a diner, small portions (for a diner), and the quality, while MAYBE on the better side for a diner, wasn’t good enough to make up for cost AND small sizes (I’ve had better food at other diners).

Walls for Murals

A group of high school students are putting together a committee to create a mural in Lincoln Park. They don't walk around the neighborhood a lot themselves, and I don't live in the area, so I'm turning to the neighborhood to ask: Are there any walls that could use a beautify project in Ward 44? Murals tend to improve crime rates, reduce littering behavior, and make the community feel more whole. Let me know if you can nominate a wall in your neighborhood!

  • I have a question. Are you looking for site in “Lincoln Park” the park or neighborhood or the 44th ward? The Lincoln Park neighborhood is not in the 44th ward. And I’m not sure if you are just looking for site in the lakefront parks.

  • It is in the 46th ward, but still very much in Lakeview - the brick walls around the salvation army property, especially the stretch along Addison between Broadway and Halsted. The wall deadens the pedestrian experience there and a enlivening mural would do wonders.

Leanna, make sure to call to get your vet records transferred to a new clinic or tell them to email them to you. If you pay for a test, your receipt should be the test results. How else will you know if they even ran them? I had the same issue recently at an unnamed clinic (on Diversey). I do not want to say their name because I think it is a great clinic. Just the idea of coming several times a year for any preventative medical/vet care is a money grab.
I take my 3 dogs every year for shots and dentals. I had years of banfield prices to compare to their clinic. This clinic on west Diversey was 2-3 times more expensive for medication, shots, and a dental cleaning. I took my dogs here this year and after seeing their quote for a dental and the cost of the annual exam that did not include shots for 2 of my dogs , because their shots were 2 months early, I went back to Banfield for their shots and dental cleaning. Lesson learned. You can book online at Banfield too.

  • I used to work for a Banfield and have since moved on to 3 other veterinary practices. Please, if you care about your pets, leave Banfield. The wellness plan is overpriced for the service. Please look into their prices for yourself and get quotes from other places. Some vets at...

I used to work for a Banfield and have since moved on to 3 other veterinary practices. Please, if you care about your pets, leave Banfield. The wellness plan is overpriced for the service. Please look into their prices for yourself and get quotes from other places. Some vets at Banfield charge for their time in addition to regular charges. For example, if the doctor spoke with you for 20 min, you would get charged for 2 10 min increments of their time. There are no regulations. They are also notorious at other vets for being uncooperative. They have a revolving door on staff because of the low quality control.
The animals are lowest priority. They misdiagnose constantly and are very good at misleading owners.

Pedestrian hit @ Belmont & Leavitt

I saw a woman and her child (in a stroller) get hit by a car this morning at Belmont and Leavitt, I stayed with them after calling 911, but left to get out of the way of the Ambulance and EMTs. Just wanted to alert people to a trio of ne'er do wells we encountered yesterday coming out of the Landmark about 4 PM. One older man and a couple in their 20's.
We were walking out of the furthest north doors on Clark Street and the older man somehow got between us and started howling that his hand was stuck in the door - implying it was somehow our fault.
I assume his goal was to get us all involved in trying to extricate his hand (he pushed it down beneath the cross bar that you push to open the door.) He tried to engage us in conversation about how this wrist had been broken in the past and he was experiencing great pain, etc.
It happened so fast it was shocking - what was going on - where did he come from - what was he yelling about his hand??
It takes a second or two to process all this.
Then I realized he had two partners who had surrounded us - mainly me and my purse backpack.
I turned around right away and grabbed hold of my purse. The younger guy was definitely up to something and when I pulled back my purse the 3 or them scattered.
The old guy scooted across the street (got his hand out real fast then!) and the couple to walked away speedily - all 3 going north on Clark St.
We were pretty shook up and by the time we caught our breath and didn't keel over - we looked for them down the street but they had disappeared. I checked my purse and one of the zippers was open but he didn't get anything
Frankly we didn't even get a good look at them - the whole thing happened in about 10 seconds! Wow1

  • Becky, Could you offer a description of these offenders? The genders of the couple, race, hair and eye color and what they were wearing would all be helpful as would their height and build.

  • krw

Thank you for the warning. Something similar happened to me in europe. I never wear a backpack anymore with my wallet in it unless its burried at the bottom or inside a compartment with another zipper. Thankfully you're ok. Please report it to Police.

The Development at Belmont and Southport it just too much!

There are already several new rental developments underway. Thinking that new tenants won't have cars is a joke. What parking there is will evaporate. Meeting on Monday evening. 7pm at Butchers 3553 N Southport. Be there! They need a zoning variance to move forward. Take a look at the plans...it is a huge building. 24 units and only 7 parking spaces.

@d3: It is a myth that 70% of Millennials don't have a car, even in Chicago. There have been many studies around that, do the research. In fact, Millennials tend to buy more new cars that Gen X, because they are more drawn to the latest gadgets and technology in general. But they buy those cars at a slightly later stage through different means (and at least some probably prefer the leasing route). They still have family and friends in the suburbs, that hasn't changed. So, overall, be prepared to have more cars on the street, and more cars parking on Southport. Walk down Southport, you will see at least a bunch of cars without a parking permit. @RTHamilton: Yes, yes, even Millennials have cars, they just didn't have them in their early 20s.

Look, I get it. Many here are probably directly or indirectly involved with a local business, and they are the only ones who want lots of traffic. That means more business. And I agree with you that we probably need more of that. However, we should still keep the balance of the neighborhood. @sarah: Building for the future city? What does that even mean? So, you want the same density for the Southport Corridor that downtown has, or Old Town has or even the awful stretch between Sheffield and Halsted on Belmont has? If you haven't done so, please spend some time on said stretch on Belmont (esp. in the evenings), and then tell me if that's what you really want for our neighborhood.

Fact is that the proposed building is 5 stories high, higher than any other building around the Southport Corridor area (yes, yes, I know, Belmont and Lakewood, I don't consider that core Southport Corridor though). The proposed building is also not 55 feet high, it is more than 58 feet high, look at the sketches. Then look at the other 3 corners of the intersection: 2 somewhat historic 2-story buildings that will not go anywhere, and then the (admittedly sad) 1-story bank on the SW corner.

  • Dan

A monstrous 5-story building of that size (over multiple lots) will overpower that intersection, and it would look misplaced, also because it would dwarf adjacent buildings that are all max. 4 stories high. Moderation and blending is key here if we want to maintain the character of Southport. Look what...

Moderation and blending is key here if we want to maintain the character of Southport. Look what a fantastic job they did with Tied House.

@sarah: I really don't understand your reference "space-hogging car-centric culture" here. Building size and height has not much to do with your anti-car position. I am with you, but the reason why people move to Lakeview is not because they can finally, finally park their cars, it is because they want a less busy, nicer and less depressing neighborhood than let's say downtown, where everything is cramped to squeeze the last dollar out of it. Sarah, this is not just about cars, it is about the identity of our neighborhood.

@Andrew: I agree with you that we need more "flow" to the businesses (incl. restaurants), but how far do we want to go? The storefronts of the current building have been vacant for one reason: They are old and not quite up to current standards (I am trying to be nice about it). I don't know why Flattop Grill left (that place was always packed), I can only assume the landlord tried to increase the rent and they packed their stuff and left.

@ brian at north center: The key difference here is that people moving to the Wicker Park area knew there will be traffic because of the Cubs, that's THE defining factor of that neighborhood. You are comparing apples to oranges.

Sorry for the long posts, I was late to this game!

So what do you think of the RPM?

They're going to rebuild the Red Line in Lakeview.
What is the "RPM?" The RPM is the largest capital improvement project in CTA history. This major initiative will completely rebuild the nearly century old North Red Line from Belmont to Howard and the Purple Line from Belmont to Linden in Wilmette. As it is rebuilt, much needed capacity will be added in this growing residential corridor to accommodate current and future riders, and to deliver faster and smoother rides with less crowding and more frequent service.

Thoughts? I think it's a waste of money.

A woman was mugged at 3035 n Hoyne. The Criminal left her purse in a bathroom stall.

Some despicable, low life criminal stole a purse this afternoon. He then went into the public bathroom, dumped some of the contents into the toilet and floor. He left the purse in the stall. Probably stole the wallet with cash and cards. If he's not caught, hopefully karma catches up with him.

The victim got her purse back and thankfully keys were left in.

Completely fed up with criminals/thieves who target purses/backpacks to steal. Please be aware of suspicious behavior.

Thanks neighbors!

  • Description of mugger?

  • There was a Facebook post about this and my understanding is that it was not a mugging. The victim left her purse unattended by accident on a bench at Hamlin Park and it was stolen. She then found it with contents dumped in the toilet.
