Shooting by the park at Lawrence and Long

Does anyone have details on how/why it happened? I'm guessing it was directed at someone by the basketball court.

Starbucks at Irving Park and Central

Does anyone know when they are going to break ground at the old Saturn lot? The location at Lawrence and Central is moving along nicely.

  • I called on that late last year. I think it was something like Starbucks won't build without another tenant there or something like that. It wasn't clear whether Starbucks, alderman, or current property owner pursues the tenant. It's been so long, I'm guessing it has fallen through.

Man shot while riding bike on Irving Park and Mango

Anyone knows more details about this incident?

  • Weebis Politically Incorrect Thought Criminal

    Most likely gang-related.

Is this the wonderful diversity progressives want to inflict on once safe, stable, hard working, and heavily taxed neighborhoods?

Is it any wonder that of all the metropolitan areas with populations over one million, that Chicago is figuratively and actually bleeding population at the highest rate in the nation?

  • My fellow Chicagoans, we are under siege by the progressive ideology. Please see it for what it is. Bad people/thugs crime minded people will never change nor do they want to change. We must once again become tough on crime all the way through to the court system. Impeach the judges who are not keeping the criminals locked up or giving them light sentences.

how much did you pay for your wall-mounted AC?

we're looking into getting one of those wall-mounted mitsubishi AC units for the balmy top level of our bungalow. does anyone else have one and, if so, how much did you pay for it? we got a quote yesterday of $5000 to install it, which seemed rather high. getting more estimates, but curious what your experience is. thanks!

I don't have personal experience, but one of my clients had this system in her two flat and she loved it. It was the only thing that made sense due to no air ducts (boiler heat) and it was far less money than Space Pacs. I do believe she also paid around $5000 but she said it was completely worth it. And because it also heats it saved her money on heating in winter. She had 2 units, one in living room and one in her bedroom, so she also saved a ton of money on cooling in warm weather as she could control the rooms that she needed for cooling, so she felt it was worth the expense. The new buyer also loved the system and it was a big selling feather when we sold the 2 flat this Spring. Absolutely call for other quotes but know that this is an outstanding system and as a Realtor I am seeing them more and more and everyone I talk to loves them!

Obama-Land Fiasco Worsens - Chicago Taxpayers Now Face $224 Million Bill

Obama-Land Fiasco Worsens - Chicago Taxpayers Now Face $224 Million Bill
Authored by Mark Glennon via Wirepoints.com, The taxpayer bill for the Obama Center to be built on Chicago's Southside now appears to be $224 million, not $172 million as initially reported, and it's certainly not privately funded as initially promised.
https://www.zerohedge.com

  • Where are "Friends of the Parks" on this? They usually oppose (rightfully) taking one square inch of parkland.

  • Many here have probably not read the actual article due to the bad link. Let me clarify. Besides the $174 million set aside by the Illinois general assembly, they also "snuck" in a PROPERTY TAX INCREASE! Yes indeed! That is where this extra money is going to come from.

Ahead of this week's public meeting on The Point, I wanted to answer some frequently asked questions my office has received about the proposal. Below is a bullet-pointed list of what the developers will present. - 50,000 square feet of ground-floor retail along Milwaukee Ave. and Irving Park Rd. - Aldi is committed as the anchor to the retail space - 265 residential, senior living units: 86 independent, 141 assisted, and 38 memory care - 237 parking spaces: 165 covered and 72 open air - Two public plazas along Milwaukee Ave. - A pedestrian connection between Milwaukee and Irving Park The plan adheres to the Six Corners Master Plan by activating underutilized land for private and public use. Retail and residential mixed-use development is a cornerstone of the redevelopment goals within the plan. I hope you will join me on Thursday, June 21, at 6:30 pm at Filament Theatre, 4041 N. Milwaukee, to learn more.

My parents, who are 70 in October, stay out later than me. So I guess that's not my real point. I'm just so sick of Aldermen and developers doing these restricted buildings because they get money. That's it! It's the only reason. Why can't I live there if I want? It's because by doing this setup they get to pay less taxes and somebody's family member gets rich.

  • Resident Live in the 45th

I am a little confused. Are the plans for a retail space no longer moving forward and this housing plan is taking its place, or are both plans moving forward and will be done in conjunction?

  • Resident, it looks like it'll be 10 stories, 9 of which will be senior housing, and the ground floor will be Aldi (so they say) and maybe a few other retail tenants. Knowing how well they've filled the other retail space in the area (it's desolate at 6 corners), I doubt there'll be anything more than an Aldi's there.

Monarch Butterflies need "Common Milkweed"

For anyone interested in helping restore Monarchs by planting milkweed; not all milkweed offers full life-cycle Monarch support (not all gardeners/naturalists know the distinction). All types of milkweed will attract pollinators/butterflies.
But only Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) supports the full Monarch lifecycle; as the necessary food source for caterpillars of the Monarch butterfly that feast on its leaves.

Never saw the visitor to our garden, but we found its caterpillars! (pic)

Really, I think the firefly population has recovered somewhat from the 1970's when they had kids catching them, putting them in sandwich bags, freezing them, then sending them or taking them to someplace where scientists were studying them. When I was about 9 or 10 EVERY kid in our neighborhood wanted to "help scientists" and we decimated the population of fireflies in the area. After those years you'd see maybe 10 or 20 fireflies at dusk. I suspect it was pretty much the same all through the region.

Anyway, last summer I went outside right at dusk and the yard was blinking with literally thousands of fireflies. So beautiful. Made my heart glad.

I never saw flocks of monarchs, but as a kid saw many, and the caterpillars too, and many other kinds of butterflies that I don't see anymore. Now I might see one or two monarchs a season, and hardly any other kind of butterfly except those little white ones. Makes me sad.

Don't know a thing about the junebug... :-)

looking for house cleaner when we travel - only for messy cats

does anyone know or have you ever heard of a house cleaner / pet sitter who specializes in daily visits to a house with pets in order to keep it relatively clean? we are looking for someone to take care of our cats' 'business' while we are away. unfortunately, this can often be outside the box or other places out of revolt. we don't need a standard sitter to visit with them (they won't come out) or feed them (they have an auto-feeder); we just need someone to keep the house clean solely of their output.

Suspected gang member shot early Friday in the 16th District

A suspected gang member was shot in his right bicep at 2 a.m. Friday, June 8, while he was walking in the 5000 block of West Newport Avenue, according to 16th (Jefferson Park) District police.
The man reported that 4 gunshots were fired from a passing vehicle, which was described as an older model, dark-colored Ford Taurus, according to police.
He also told officers that he ran when the shots started and that he was a block away when he noticed his wound, police said.

  • Heard on Ch2 news that nearly 20 shooting injuries over this past wknd involved gang-related 'victims' who are NOT cooperating with police investigations.

Has anyone else been bothered by the noise of a rooster crowing all day long in the area? I don't know precisely where this rooster is located, but it's pretty much driving me crazy just as would the sound of an incessantly barking dog. I have no problem with people owning roosters or chickens in the city, but there needs to be some consideration for the noise, and I believe there are humane and inexpensive ways to reduce the noise a rooster is able to make.

I don't want to call the police, because they have much more important things to be dealing with than a silly rooster, but has anyone else been bothered by this? I'd be more than happy to help it's owner make a rooster collar for it, if they were willing.

Any advice or guidance for dealing with something like this would be appreciated.

  • So the rooster isnt crowing

    Its screaming for help

  • CL

I believe the ordinance is that an officer has to witness the noise or you have to collect signatures from three neighbors confirming the nuisance. I can’t imagine getting three signatures would be a problem, I just have no idea what to do with them. I guess take them and file a report with the police?

Has Anyone Else Seen or Found any Dead Bats?

I came across either a dead of dying small grayish brown bat on the 4300 block of Lavergne I called 311, and was in formed that Animal Control would be immediately dispatched. The operator said they consider bats a priority because they can carry rabies.

A few years back, the area received a post card in the mail from a government agency (CACC?) that a bat in the neighborhood had tested positive for rabies.

  • Sam

I have never found a dead bat, but I see them flying every day. There’s a bat colony on the rooftop of a building by me. They come come out around 7pm and just fly in circles.

  • IMHO Been here long enough to know

I here they found several around 35th and Shields in Bridgeport.

Frunchroom is the Jewish-Italian deli you didn't know you needed in your life
A few weeks ago I called upon a well-known and outspoken chef for some expertise I needed for a story. But this chef wanted to talk about something else. The chef had just come from lunch at one of the celebrated new restaurants launched by a certain large and ever-spawning restaurant group, and before that dinner at a sprawling spinoff from another very prominent local group in town.

Need Advice

Took in a stray who turned out to be pregnant. I have five kittens now that need a good home. They ate two months and a half months old, litter trained and eat solid cat food. I don't want to take them to a shelter.

  • Yes please email me mjjohnsono1201@hotmail.com. I prefer not to post my phone.

PAWS Lurie clinic does offer low cost spay/neuter and shots. I've used them before when I rescued a pregnant stray. All the kittens went to good homes and the stray mommy did too!

  • Oh shoot - a typo on the email. It's mjjohnson1201@hotmail.com
