Question about the carjackings

It seems that we have tens of carjackings every week. Got me thinking. What is this doing to the car insurance costs in Chicago? And can the victims whose cars get totalled sue the thieves direct or does the insurance sue the thieves?

  • Barbs hey you kids, get off my lawn!

@west town dude is right. The States Attorney, Kim Foxx, is now treating carjackings as a non-violent offense. So these "kids" bond out, and are free to do it again and again, and they know it.

  • I just want to say, three or four "kids" coming up to your car with at least one showing a gun, does not exactly seem like a "non-violent" offense to me. I thought it would be armed robbery, which is pretty serious.

A person facing that situation is literally "in fear of their life," or at least I would be. I cannot imagine the fear of that moment. Some of the people carjacked said they were told to lie face down on the ground. One guy said he was sure he was going to die right then.

And these are not "kids." Kids are 12 or 13 years old and typically aren't able to punch you out. These "kids" could do serious bodily harm just with their fists. I am sure they are quite menacing.

Please bag leaves and put them in your black garbage can or your condo dumpster for pick up. Remaining leaves migrate with rain and snow melt, clog sewer grates and freeze on intersections and crosswalks contributing to flooded basements, vehicles and intersections and contribution to falls.

Thanks everyone! Your leaf efforts will help everyone! Take advantage of the dry days we're having AND burn off some extra Thanksgiving calories!

Here's what they have to say about what coyotes eat--and it's not pets or garbage: "Some people believe that urban coyotes primarily eat garbage and pets. Although coyotes are predators, they are also opportunistic feeders and shift their diets to take advantage of the most available prey. Coyotes are generally scavengers and predators of small prey but can shift to large prey occasionally. Researcher Paul Morey analyzed scat (fecal matter) contents at different locations within our study area. After investigating 1,429 scats, he found that diet items varied across space and time, which reflects the flexible food habits of coyotes.

The most common food items were small rodents (42%), fruit (23%), deer (22%), and rabbit (18%). (Scats often have more than one diet item; therefore, frequencies do not necessarily add up to 100%). Apparently, the majority of coyotes in our study area do not, in fact, rely on pets or garbage for their diets."

Thank you Jill H. All very interesting information. I would expect an urban animal would have to shift their diet in order to survive. So because of that, It would be hard to predict what they will be hungry for on any given day. I myself won't be taking any chances that it wouldn't come after my animal. Doesn't mean I'm not taking my dog out in the neighborhood, I just won't let her in our yard unsupervised and if I see one again I will turn around and go the other way again. Love my dog too much to take chances.

  • Very informative post Jane.

Let me add to the comments. Howard has done various projects for me in the past quite satisfactorily, BUT sometimes he wouldn't show and came up with lame excuses for not showing. The last occurrence happened this past spring when he took an outdoor light fixture and some paint I had purchased home with him. We agreed that these outside chores could be done at his convenience even if I wasn't home. He never did the work, and in June I emailed Robin and was told he was out of town for a family emergency, had injured his hand, and was getting x-rays. I'd heard similar excuses before and decided I'd been patient enough and asked to have the items returned to me; I even said I'd pick them up when it became apparent they would not be returned voluntarily, which was in fact the case. In the end, I wrote the whole thing off and lost his number, went out and bought the items again and hired someone else to do the work.

I have hired Howard for 3 separate jobs in my home. The work was good, he was punctual, and the prices were extremely reasonable.

CHICAGO - Residents of Chicago's Uptown neighborhood should be on guard after reports of three separate muggings that occurred in just 15 minutes Wednesday night.
The first robbery happened around 7:30 p.m. near West Buena and North Clarendon avenues. The victim said four males attacked him and ran east, toward Marine Drive.
Right after that, another man was reportedly beaten up and robbed in the 700-block of West Bittersweet Place.
Minutes later, the group reportedly beat a 50-year-old man to the ground, but he was not robbed. The attackers ran north on Clarendon. The victim was treated at a hospital.
There is surveillance video of one of the violent attacks. The robbers appear to be between 15-18 years old.
I have been in contact with the investigating officers of these incidents.
As I have recording cameras surrounding my estate on Hutchinson and Clarendon,
I will check to see if there is anything that can be helpful to police. I have reported this information to the police.

" I'm not sure why this keeps happening"

what has changed that would stop it from happening?

"My friend and his pregnant wife have a condo in that exact area, and I do worry about their safety"

im not sure if a pregnant woman would be seen as an easy target or just the opposite since if caught there are added charges.

why would anyone want to raise children in that area? Hopefully they dont plan to stay long!

  • DEAR ALL:
Concerning the rampage of muggings November 8th, I received a call last night from the lead detective: one of the 4 criminals is in custody. The CPD is now interviewing the suspect to turn in the other 3 which I am confident he will in exchange for reduced charges. So this good news to enhance safety for our neighborhood.

A new study of prehistoric rock art reveals how hunters in the Arabian Peninsula pursued prey with dogs over 8,000 years ago - and even controlled their packs with leashes. The engravings represent the earliest evidence for dogs on the Arabian Peninsula and might even stand as the earliest depictions of canines yet, as Science first reported.

I think they and the States’ Attorneys and defense attorneys all know about it.

Again, I haven’t researched it. But I doubt anyone has even qualified for those 3 strikes. Meaning nobody has had two prior, separate convictions for the heinous felonies listed and folllowed it up with another such conviction. I’d assume any of the felonies would have resulted in perhaps a 25-year sentence. Two of those would be 50 years. Assuming the person was 18 at the first conviction, and there were only 2 years between the first release and the second conviction. That’d leave you with a 70-year-old needing to commit another heinous crime.

It needs to be a broader list of what felonies count as “strikes.” And a system that doesn’t use those strikes to pressure perps into pleading to lesser crimes to avoid a strike.

Many on this forum talk about litigating, be it for some unneighborly thing or other. Well, here is your chance to read the behind the scenes workings of the Chicago Way in its entirety (link below - get some popcorn and settle in) and VOTE.

This is the culmination of 7 years of attorney fees and a waste of our taxpayer-funded court's time/resources, in my opinion, of course.

  • Lake View High School reviewed by a student

The school has been trying to improve its reputation ever since the new principal has taken the lead. BUT the student body itself HAS NOT been improved which might surprise others. Want proof? Well, when I graduated, we had a surprise guest: the CEO of CPS, Forrest Claypool who visited only our high school out of all CPS because apparently Lake View had the highest graduation year. That might sound like a good thing, right? Not if you knew that student who didn't meet the graduation requirements STILL graduated. Another example, recently a kid with autism was physically bullied by another student... more specifically FLIPPED sending the kid with autism to the hospital. Yup. Lake View High School DOES NOT address the issue of bullying. Oh... Forgot to tell you! A classmate of mine had brought a taser to school and was playing around with it in class. I approached the deans with the issue and it was never addressed. Yes, they might have a great STEM program and other great opportunities like College Possible, etc but trust me, IT IS NOT WORTH putting your child through what he/she sees at Lake View.

Where to look for stolen jewelry?

My engagement ring (a family heirloom) was stolen from my apartment by a burglar, and I realize that it's probably gone, but I'd still like to do my due diligence to try and find it. I've been looking at Craigslist, ebay, and some resale sites (offerup, facebook market). The detective assigned to our case looked through the pawn shop database but no luck.

Any other suggestions.

Be careful out there today - streets and sidewalks glaze ice

I just returned from being out. I was east of Ashland Ave. at about Fullerton. The side streets and sidewalks are glaze ice. Cars are fishtailing and skidding trying to stop. I tried to stop at one intersection and forget it --- my car just kept going and stopped about the middle of the intersection. It was that way all the way until Western, where it's not so bad, but is still wet and looks icy in places.

Bicyclists are having a very hard time of it. They skid if they try to slow down or stop, and then when they put their foot down they slip.

So far the main streets are just slushy and are safer.
